Strange BRUCE LEE Re-release Plan From FOX''''

Published at:  Dec 02, 1998 4:57:25 AM CST

Ok folks I have no idea about this scoop. At one level it sounds like the annoying sort of thing that would happen today, but at the same time... well I can't imagine any sort of large scale rerelease of FISTS OF FURY or CHINESE CONNECTION or RETURN OF THE DRAGON... ya know? But hey, sure why not? Any reason to get BRUCE LEE on the BIG screen is great by me. He's just too damn cool. I especially love his yells and howls. He rocks so hard. Well, let's see what comes of this, perhaps nothing, perhaps something. Keep your ears open to hear one way or the other...

In the wake of the millions of dollars generated from the Star Wars
re-releases, Fox is searching for the next big release. The
story goes like this:

Fox will re-package the four (not including Enter the Dragon, which is
owned by Warner) Bruce Lee movies and will re-release
them with their original name. The first three will be issued first,
followed by a massive advertising strategy that will place the
new version of "Game of Death" which is being currently worked on as the
main attraction.

First Fox will release "The Big Boss", followed by "Fist of Fury, and
"Way of the Dragon." These movies will be released in a
period of 8 months, which gives each film 3 months to perform. At the
end of these 8 months, "Game of Death" will be
released.

Fox is planning on using digital effects to better the quality of each
film, they will edit-in scenes of Lee that were cut from the
U.S print and will edit out other segments of each film (one's that do
not include Lee) to give it a faster, 90s style. The fights will
all stay the same. The music and the dubbing will all change. Reports
indicate that the same individual who was hired to dub
Lee's voice in the new footage used in the re-issue of "Enter the
Dragon" will once again carry on the dubbing of Bruce Lee.
Earlier in the year, Warner Brothes rerelased "Enter the Dragon" in the
same format of Fox, however, they released the film in
video, losing a potential large audience that would have been interested
in watching Bruce Lee's biggest international hit on
screen. Eager to gain from Warner's lost, Fox's re-releases of Bruce
Lee's film are considered to be a top priority in the studio.
The legendary Bruce Lee is gathering a new sense of status withing the
film community. Two years ago, it was reported in
Variety, that a new Bruce Lee film is in the works, using digital
effects to bring back the actor in a full-length film. Lee was
chosen because of his status as one of the most loved action stars of
all time.

And Fox's planned re-releases will focus on that popularity all the way
to the bank.

YES!! this is an excellent Idea (especially for people like me who grew up watching these on saturday afternoons) "THE BIG BOSS" COOL!! "GAME OF DEATH" COOL!!! An all new all digital Bruce Lee full length movie? umm...not so cool...even with todays technology, it just wouldnt seem quite "right" (kinda like UPN did with the "Virtual Ed Sullivan Show") But the Rerelease sounds cool! :) -McKracken

Strange BRUCE LEE Re-release Plan From FOX????

    by redd

This sounds really cool. I've been a Bruce Lee fan since the early 70's (showing my age!) It would be great to see his films back on the big screen. Warner Bros. did release Enter the Dragon on a limited basis earlier this year - I saw it at a local art house theater; they could have done a bigger release (they have done a nice job on the VHS and DVD re-issue). I hope Fox does the best job possible; Game Of Death will need the most work - that mess they released back in 78 was an insult (except for the original fight scenes with Bruce). Maybe they could do a big screen biography and include those scenes (Dragon was good, but contained several inaccuracies). Hopefully, they will use Linda (Bruce's widow) and Raymond Chow (Bruce's partner from Concord Pictures and head of Golden Harvest)as consultants.
Did anyone catch Shannon Lee (Bruce's daughter) on Martial Law?
She did a good job on Samo's show. Speaking of Samo - did you know that is Samo in the opening scene of Enter the Dragon? Bruce's opponent at the Shaolin Temple! Also, a young Jackie Chan had the honor of having his characters necked snapped by Bruce in the underground dungeon sequence!

    Bruce Lee rerelease

    by jeff

I think this would be majorly cool if it actually happened. If they are doing it, they should definitely redub. Since the lips and voices would be out of sync, it would be cool if they could alter the lip movements with cgi. That could get a little costly, but that would be really cool. The same thing should be done with Drunken Master II when (if) it's released here.

Bruce Lee movies out on DVD!!!

    by sinople

Screw Fox! and their pathetic re-raping of Bruce Lee's movies! In Asia, many of Bruce Lee's movies have been released on DVD as All region disks. They are uncut, widescreen, 5.1, original language tracks with optional English subs, plus loads of trailers and production notes in English and Chinese! So far they have released Enter The Dragon (not quite as cool as the WB vwersion), The Big Boss (Fist Of Fury, Way Of The Dragon (Return Of The Dragon), and Game Of Death. Coming soon is Fist Of Fury and Tower Of Death (gAME oF dEATH 2). They are readily available online at DVD retailers carrying Asian DVDs and many Chinatown DVD shops. I highly recommend these DVDs or the VCDs if you don't have a dvd player. e-mail me at sinople@yahoo.com if you need more info.

    Go to hell Fox!!!!

    by paul t. ryan

Listen up Fox, BRUCE LEE IS GOD.
Do not mess with his legacy. Game
Of Death was depressing enough the first time around. As for me,
I'll tape the original cantonese versions of Lee's movies off SBS.
Now that's the real Bruce Lee.

Man, this sounds cool. I would love to see Lee on the big screen, even if the films weren't retouched or any of that crap. It would f--ing rule. Who needs Jason Scott Lee when you can have the real thing? Yeah baby!

    Why Not?

    by anton_sirius

Ever since the Special Editions studios have seen little dollar signs floating in front of their eyes with regard to rereleases. They can slap togather a "new, improved" version of a much beloved film for a couple of million, rerelease it to theaters and turn a quick, tidy profit. Ted Turner is making (yet another) mint doing exactly that. Creative bankrupcy is in right now, and the less thinking the suits have to do (and the less they have to rely on those nasty unpredictable creative types) the better they like it. So why not Bruce rereleases? The audience is obviously there- just look at Rush Hour. The bottom line is... the bottom line, and if Fox decides they can make some money doing it (and I think they could) they'll go ahead.
