FINAL FANTASY in 2001

Here's the official line, also just so you know, those pics from a few days ago were the real deal. Here's the scoop...

I don't know if you've been flooded with mail about this but it's official that the Final Fantasy movie will be realeased in 2001 under Columbia Pictures. Square's US president, Hironobu Sakaguchi, will be directing the feature and Al Reinert (Apollo 13) will be writing the script. Most of the production is being done at Square Pictures' Honolulu studios. If you haven't heard about this...well, cool. If you have...well, it's still cool.

    Final Fantasy characters

As with ALL Final Fantasies, Final Fantasy the movie will be an all-new storyline with all-new characters, and will have nothing *at all* to do with other Final Fantasies, apart from spells or familiar creatures (ie. chocobos or something). This is not going to be a movie version of any of the FF games, but a wholly new FF which happens to be a movie. The very little showed at Siggraph looked *very* nice, but there was very little motion apparent in it - mostly rotating shots of still heads. I just pray that it includes summonings of some kind (oh yeah, and a good storyline as well)

...and chocobos. Lotsa lotsa chocobos. Man, FF2 and 3 would make great movies. This should, barring involvement from Warner Brothers, be one amazing film. Can't wait.

    Final Fantasy Movie in 2001

    by Syndic

Well, it's sounds very promising! If it's gonna be a live-action movie, it's gonna SUCK! If it's gonna be a CG movie (which I hope it's gonna be - It should be!), it's gonna be great! I just hope the person who's going to write the script can write a good story. You know, the track record for American scriptwriters who have written scripts based on video games (from Japan) have not been good at all! Take Super Mario Bros. as an example (or Double Dragon!). I hope this person can keep the excitement, energy and integrity that have been preserved in the Final Fantasy games all this time.

Now of course I'm sure nothing is set in stone as Honolulu is still working on Final Fantasy VIII *BUT* I did hear almost a year ago that the characters from the movie will be the same characters that will be in Final Fantasy IX. It depends, I guess, on whether or not Square decides to go with their previous style. The Final Fantasy Animes were based roughly on FF IV and V (I think) but did not have any specific characters from the games. But with the opening of Square LA and Square's new approach to become a CGI powerhouse in Hollywood, I'd be surprised if they missed out on such a killer tie-in.

    FF IX and the Animes

    by TheSchnoo

FF IX will not have the characters from the movie, this has already been decided as it was in the past. FF IX isn't even in the early stages of pre-production yet, so you don't know who is in it, but rest assured it will not be the movie characters, it will be new characters. Everyone knows square won't go against tradition by ever keeping the same characters in a game, they do new and fresh things each time. The FF animes were based on FF5 or well basically on the son of Butz, the hero of FF5 (i think it was his son, either way it was a characters son) and his quest to protect the crystals of the planet... The next thing i'd like to address is there is no opening of a Square LA office, it opened 2 years ago and is now closing as i type, the announcement came a few weeks ago, all personnell will be moved to the honolulu studio as to not lose any valuable talent. This movie will be absolutely gorgeous and I'm sure i'll piss myself when i see it... well, that's all I gotta say.. Oh and harry i forgot the password to my The Schnoo name, so now i have to use this one without the space... *sigh* oh well... The Schnoo

    Square's most wonderful Idea!

I can't wait till this movie comes out cause ever since I played the games. I know that this movie will be the best because square has never let us down with all the games, storylines, and characters.
