Hercules Devours The New LOST Set!! The Super-Exciting Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Sep 05, 2006 5:16:15 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A lot of us loved the second season of “Lost,” but not everybody loved every second of it. The show was nowhere as funny as the pilot J.J. Abrams co-wrote and directed. I miss Shannon, who used to be hilarious. Hurley used to be a lot funnier too, and I think I liked Locke better when I thought he was a sinister badass. I hate when the flashbacks don’t tell us anything about Dharma Island (and they frequently didn’t).

But all my bitching won’t take away from the greatness of “Henry Gale” and Mr. Eko and his Jesus Stick. I loved our introduction to Swan Station, and the Hanso Foundation and the Dharma Initiative. I loved all the stuff with The Tailies. I loved Walt somehow standing in the middle of the jungle, dripping wet, talking to Shannon. I loved finding out what Ethan Rom was doing with Claire. I loved finding out what happened to Michael.

Commentaries

Five of the 24 season-two hours carry commentary tracks.

2.1, “Man of Science, Man of Faith,” features a commentary track by writer-showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, producer Bryan Burk and director Jack Bender. (It’s revealed that the title refers to Jack only, not Locke.)

2.9, “What Kate Did,” features a commentary track by Evangeline Lilly, director Paul Edwards, director of photography Michael Bonvillain.

2.10, “The 23rd Psalm,” features a commentary track by Lindelof, Cuse and Burk.

2.16, “The Whole Truth,” features a commentary track by Yoon-jin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, writer Christina M. Kim and – so that everyone on this commentary doesn’t have the same last name – writer Elizabeth Sarnoff.

2.18, “Dave,” features a commentary track by Jorge Garcia, Cynthia Watros and Bender.

Bonus Disc

In new (but distressed) footage shot for the DVD, the fellow we know as both Dr. Marvin Candle and Mark Wickmund introduces the bonus disc, noting that is it divided into three phases.

Phase 1: Observation

1A. Fire + Water: Anatomy of an Episode (31:45) Looks at the “baptism-crazy Charlie episode,” taking viewers from its conception in the writers’ room in Burbank to the location scouting, production design, constuming, and shooting in Hawaii, then back to Burbank for post-production. See Honolulu double for Britain and Dominic Monaghan give accent tips to the kid who plays pre-teen Charlie.

1B. Lost: On Location

1B1: Adrift (3:17) explains, among other things, that the Dharma tattoo on the shark was really meant as more of an “Easter egg” viewers really wouldn’t be able to see, but which wound up much more brightly lit than producers intended.

1B2: Everybody Hates Hugo (3:45) Backstage at the first Hurley-flashback episode of the season. Learn that Harold Perrineau, Josh Holloway and Daniel Dae Kim became pals while stuck in the Tailies’ ditch-prison.

1B3: Abandoned (4:37) As the last Shannon-flashback episode is shot, Naveen Andrews reveals it was his idea for Sayid to hook up wth the beautiful blonde American.

1B4: Collision (3:18) The first Anna-Lucia-flashback episode demonstrates that Michelle Rodriguez is a lot more smiley off camera than on.

1B5: The 23red Psalm (4:22) As the first Eko-flashback scene is filmed, learn that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was not told of Eko’s crime-lord past when he signed on. Also surprising? Akinnuoye-Agbaje came up the name “Eko.” The original name for the character was “Amekka.” I think.

1B6: The Whole Truth (5:15) Yoon-jin Kim speculates that the father of Sun Kwon’s fetus could be “anyone or anything.”

1B7: Dave (5:43) We get to see what Jorge Garcia’s stunt double looks like as the scene with Hurley beating down Sawyer is filmed.

1B8: S.O.S. (4:47) We learn during the Rose and Bernard Story that L. Scott Caldwell, who plays Rose and recently lost her new husband to cancer, was its inspiration.

1B9: Two For The Road (4:31) Learn that, because cars with steering wheels on the right can be hard to find in Hawaii, large and elaborate “mirror signage” was created so that the negative for some exterior scenes could be flipped to simulate Australian motor vehicles.

1B10: Live Together, Die Alone (5:08) The last moments on set for Cynthia Watros and Harold Perrineau are documented.

1C. The World According to Sawyer (4:31) A compilation of the vast number of insulting pop-culture references made by con man James Ford. Learn that Josh Holloway now calls Evangeline Lilly “Freckles” off-camera too.

Phase 2: Conditioning

2A: The Lost Flashbacks

2A1 Abandoned

2A1a The Wake (1:29) Shannon learns at her father’s wake that her stepmom is throwing her out of the house.

2A1b The New Au Pair (1:08) Shannon starts a job looking after the kids of a horny-looking married Frenchman.

2A2 Lockdown

2A2a Locke’s Father (:49) Locke explains to the clergyman overseeing his father’s funeral service that he really didn’t know his father.

(An interesting omission from these deleted flashbacks is the Jolene Blalock footage shot for 2.2. Are producers saving it for a future Sawyer-centric episode?)

2B: Deleted Scenes

2B1 Seeing Walt (1:18) Sun asks Shannon what Walt was trying to tell her.

2B2 A Little You Time (1:34) Charlie tries to wake Locke, offers to care for Claire’s baby and complains about being left out of the loop with regard to what’s going on with Swan Station.

2B3 Sawyer’s Visitor (1:15) Inside the Tailies’ ditch-prison, Sawyer has a short conversation with (I think) an unseen Libby, who wants to know if he was really on 815.

2B4 Dinner Time (1:20) A dialogue-free scene in which Sawyer suspiciously accepts food from his Tailie captors.

2B5 Special Delivery (:36) The Tailies are disappointed by the contents of a crate that’s washed ashore.

2B6 Ana Lucia’s Prisoner (1:20) Libby explains to Sayid that Shannon’s death was an accident.

2B7 Libby & Claire (1:09) Claire learns she’s got something that belongs to Libby.

2B8 Connected (1:14) Michael asks Locke if he thinks Swan Station’s computer is connected to computers in other stations

2B9 I Need To Know (1:12) Claire asks Sayid if he knew there were drugs inside the Virgin Mary statues.

2B10 The Doctor’s Solution (1:26) Ana tells Eko that Jack wants to go after The Others.

2B11 What’s Your Story? (2:38) Hurley and Libby discuss their lives. She claims to have been married many times. He reveals how much he won in the lottery.

2B12 Weakness (:36) Sayid argues against trading “Henry” for Walt.

2B13 Are You All Right? (2:03) Sun learns Rose lost a daughter.

2B14 I Miss … (:44) Hurley and Libby discuss home and we learn of Hurley’s pet.

2C: Lost Bloopers (4:06) Includes a “Brokeback Mountain” parody featuring Sayid and Locke!

2D: Channel 4 U.K. Promo (1:06) An amazing promo, directed by photographer David LaChapelle, featuring the entire season-one cast dancing around the crashed and flaming 815 in special wardrobe and makeup. Wow!!

2E: Sneak Peeks Ads for “Apocalypto,” (1:45), “Pirates of the Caribbean 2” (2:08), “The Heart of the Game” (2:13), “Scrubs 4.x” (1:27), “Desperate Housewives 2.x” (:57), “Golden Girls 6.x” (1:10), “Home Improvement 5.x” (1:28), “Alias 5.x” (1:13) “Grey’s Anatomny 2.x” (1:47) and “Lost” 3.x (:32)

Phase 3: Conclusions

3A: Lost Connections (Intro: 1:56) An unusual interactive maze that uses very short flashback clips from the first two seasons to illustrate all the regulars’ unlikely connections prior to boarding Oceanic Flight 815.

3B: Mysteries, Theories and Conspiracies (10:17) Creators (including J.J. Abrams in a rare appearance), cast members and fans discuss what they think is happening out there on Dharma Island. “People put more time into their theories on the show than we do into plotting the show,” admits showrunner Carlton Cuse. “The second half of the third season will be about opening up the show in a whole new way that I don’t think anybody sees coming,” says showrunner Damon Lindelof.

3C: Secrets From The Hatch (15:47) Cuse says the creators were surprised that fans reacted so negatively to their long-held plan of ending the season without exploring what lay beneath the hatch. Abrams says the original plan was to get into the hatch much earlier. Lindelof remembers Abrams mentioning the hatch in their very first “Lost” meeting together, but Abrams did not know what lay beneath. “We’ll figure that out later,” he replied. An early idea, apparently, was to have something like Disney’s Tomorrowland down there, a vision of the future from the 1970s. An early view via cell-phone of the under-construction Swan Station reportedly frightened Abrams because he thought it looked like “Star Trek.”

since when did flashbacks ever tell us about Dharma Is?

    by newc0253

with the exception of the episode dealing with the tailies' first 40 days (which i agree was suprisingly weak), the flashbacks always tell us about the characters, not the island.

    The Connections

    by sbmpx1

So i got the box set a little early and rifled throug it and could not stop toying around with the inter-connections feature Herc talks about--while almost all the screens I've found are based on a character, there are some screens that are blank or just make noise. Additionally, the 108 minute alarm sounded at one point so I am convinced there is more to this feature than meets the eye, and while i try to figure it out, I was just wondering if anyone else had found anything yet.

    BSG box sets

    by the hoff

yeah i felt pretty cheated with the region 2 box sets of battlestar but it isn't the extras that i buy it for. The season 2 region 2 box set is much better for extras then season 1 was (and includes the extended edition pegasus episode which the states had to wait until 2.5 for) but we only get commentaries on the first disc. Fortunately all the the extras listed for 2.5 and that are missing from the region 2 box set can be downloaded off the main site (audio commentaries for every episode bar 1, deleted scenes from all episodes and video blogs). The truth is that the region 2 box set is pretty good and given that i can get the audio commentaries online meant there really isn't much difference between the two (well except the price tag

    by mooly

I already pre-ordered my copy. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this set for $200. The individual seasons still sell for like $80 or whatever insane price HBO likes to sell their shows for. AS much as I absolutely loved the show and wanted to buy it, I just couldn't part with that kind of coin for a 12 ep season. However, for about $40 per season, I couldn't pass this up.

However, I wanted to say that the link to the "complete series" goes to AMazon page for all 5 seasons bought at one time. It is like $450 and isn't the "gift set". Just a note.

Yeah that's a bad sign. sort of like the writers use fans as a source of ideas. Does even JJ Abrams know exactly what is going on. If the writers are expending less effort than the fans you get the new star wars movies. just sayin.

sure, but that still doesn't make herc's complaint about season 2 flashbacks any clearer. arguably, at least some of flashbacks in season 2 (claire, the tailies, desmond) told you stuff about the island. whereas the sum total of all the flashbacks in season 1 revealed you jack shit about the island (except maybe hurley learning about the numbers being broadcast out of the pacific?). i agree that several of the episodes in season 2 felt like treading water, but i still don't see how the lack of dharma-revelatory flashbacks is somehow a criticism of season 2 over season 1. maybe herc can clarify what he meant.

Lost ended up staying one of the best shows on tv. Starting with one of the later half CHarlie episodes, and I guess I was one of the only people who liked it. Anyhoo, can't wait to re-visit everything that happened this season.

    by zarles

...and it's worth every penny. The transfer is amazing, lots of cool extras, and if you buy it at Best Buy, not only is it only $36, but you get an extra bonus disc on top of the 7 DVDs already inside. Great deal. Oh, and to all of you "They're making the show up as they go..." assholes, fuck off. Name me one TV show where the writers have absolutely everything planned out ahead of time, and know from the very beginning where every last character arc and plotline is ultimately going to go over the entire length of the show. Yeah, didn't think so. Lost is intelligent, thoughtful, high-quality TV from top to bottom, so all you haters better flip back to 24 before your tiny little attention span starts to give you another headache. Selah.

I was one of the viewers that was disappointed...

    by -guyinthebackrow

by the second season of LOST. Many of the episodes seemed like nothing happened, and I became bored. However, I never stopped watching and hoping for something interesting to happen. I was happy with the season finale and the season opener as well as the addition of the tailies and the further exploration of the island. Hopefully, the third season will not be as slow as the second and hopefully the flashbacks will start to matter. I've said it before and I'll say it again... form follows content. If you're going to use a flashback device than it has to be for the purpose of not only telling about what has happened to a character in the past, but it also has to relate to the reason the character is in the situation they are in i.e. not just how Charlie or Jack or Kate might be reacting to a certain event, but why that character is on the island of mystery. Of course, that's just my opinion.

was awesome! I was telling my friends for almost a year that Lost was great show and they'll NEED to watch when it comes on. When they saw that advert they were all like "This looks crazy, what is this show about?" Now, Two seasons later they are all avid fans. Bitches shoulda listened to me in the first place!! I spread the gospel on Veronica Mars too, but frakkin LivingTV bought the rights, and put the 1st season on @ 6pm Mon-Fri. I wish E4 had bought it! Darn you E4, darn you to heck!!

R none of u bothered that the LOST creators...

    by silentbobafett2

Say that they fans pure more thought in than they do? That they'll figure out whats below the hatch later? That the pirate ship was a "fun idea" that they'll not do anything more with? (That last bit is from Lost magazine)

You do realise that means were watching a show where the writers dont really have an overall game plan (MAYBE, just MAYBE they know the final end game... but I'm really not so sure). I think its the ultimate show for getting viewers to tune in each week. I mean, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the show when its good. When it knocks out a new idea etc but then I suddenyl realise I've been through TWO SEASONS without any BIG payoffs such as whats underneath the Hatch etc If the show gets canceled at some point (could happen when people get sick of the writers sucking their owns cocks) then you can forget EVER learning anything about the show and if it does make it to season 7 or 9 or whatever they say it'll be, do you honestly think they'll remember the give a payoff to something that happened in season 1 or 2? I enjoyed so much story set up in season 1 and was enjoying workin gout what they might do with it... only to realise that they've forgotten about it! More and more I see stuff set up in Lost and I loose my enthusiasm because I think "I'm NEVER gonna learn about this" or if something happens that they MIGHT do somehting with, I'll have to go through at least 1 or 2 episodes where NO ONE says anything on the island about it. I enjoy the show, but it is flawed and really is not as good as everyone says and the writers them selves admit that they are basically making itup as they go along! How can that turn people on? THat to me says that when something amzing happens and I'm looking forward to what it could be about.... the writers are too! And maybe, in that case, their thinking ain't as good as the fans!!!! Am I the ony one who thinks like this?

    ZARLES and the Lost LOVERS:

    by silentbobafett2

I LOVE LOST as well! Promise... when its good... its good! I agree, with big shows like this none of the writers know where it will ALL end up. BUT they must have the MAIN ARC worked out. They must have basic beats worked out for each season and the show overall (lets not forget that they say they have enough for 9 (or is 7?) seasons!)

I just worry when I see something I like and then I hear that it was "fun" and don't expect anything from it, like the pirate ship or the Dharam shark or.... well you ALL know what I mean. It just winds me up. I don't think writers, IN ANY TV SERIES, should set stuff up that they ain't gonna finish. ANd I'm not talking little things here people... I'm talking stuff they use as cliff hangers and big beats.

Tell me ONE major reveal and explination we've had in SERIES 1 or 2 that gives us closure on something and the will to dig deeper. If they keep setting up stuff and never giving us answers then things will be forgotten or, god forbid, the show gets canceled (the middle of each season has seen drops in viewers - at least in the UK, I suspect due to the "treading water"), then it will be four years (or however long) of our TV lives "wasterd" because YES I enjoyed the show... but I never found fuck all out.

So much happens and so little is said about it I wonder how long the writers want to wiat till they do something with it... I suspect they'll forget a load.

ONe of my fave things was HUrley in Season one (Numbers) going to that guys house int he outback who know alot about the numbers. HUIrley spoke to his wife but didn't press her too much (after travelling all that way!!!) and that was it... WELL WHAT THE FUCK! SHE KNEW ALOT!!!

ANyway, that was just something that came into my head. I like lost, I will defend it to people who slag it off. Its a great premise with great characters and promise. I'm even getting the Weta statues for it. BUT they need to realise that there is a lot of fans turning on it. The reason is they REFUSE to pay off story points and anyone with an udnerstnadng of TV and writing will surely workout that stuff you like and wondered about in Season 1 and 2 will be forgotten in the end... which make these seasons ALMOST pointless... I might just tune into Season 9...

    Lost doubters

    by newc0253

jesus, were any of you people X-Files fans? if so, i don't know you can complain about Lost's taunts & slow buildup. yes, at the end of season 2, there's still lots of unanswered questions. yes, it's conceivable that the writers might not have exhaustively plotted every minor detail before the pilot aired. but generally? it's one of the best shows in years (and somehow even that description doesn't seem to do it justice). compared to something like the X-Files, where Scully was still skeptical about aliens even after she was abducted... fuck man, some of you are just whiners.

I'm sure that all of the scripts for all of the seasons of Babylon 5 and Carnivale were written all at the same time, and there was absolutely nothing left to the imagination when it came to expanding on the storyline or character arcs at all. Yeah, I'm sure that's the case. Go back to sleep, children. Oh, and silentboba, you should've remained silent. Nobody read that, dude.

LOST = Shaggy Dog Trick Soap Opera Outtake Bin

    by laserpants

LOST has managed to pull off one of the most unique tricks in television history: wrapped in an air of mystery, but having nothing to really say, it acts mainly as a way for various discarded soap opera scripts to be used in a context which pretends to be "deep" sci-fi, but really is about as profound as an episode of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. You have the tease that its going to go into some kind of THE PRISONER-esque mindfuckery, only to be rewarded with what amounts to countless hours of digressions about fat guys with trust funds and the impossibly hot chicks who would never talk to them in real life being super interested in them. Its a big loud dumb nothing that they've managed to trick you into watching. They should rename the show SHAGGY DOG TRICK ARTICHOKE ISLAND.

LOST gets shit for being too ambitious

    by johngalt06

Seriously, how many TV shows have ever tried to have a story arc that encompasses the entire series? Not just one season...an entire 5+ year run of shows. That's what LOST is trying to do. It's an enormous jigsaw puzzle, where some pieces are in place, many are missing... some pieces may seem totally unnecessary, while others are missing. Will it all make sense in the end? I hope so... But for now, I am just grateful that the show exists at all.

...the next time you feel like getting something off your chest, be sure to immediately replace that freshly-emptied space with a sharp knife when you're done. Anyway, I'll take a show that makes it up as they go over one that doesn't any day of the week (preferably Wednesday). Do you really want to watch a show that already has every last detail planned in advance, with no opportunity for improvisation and expansion at all? I mean, come on - people talk. Ideas and conceptual frameworks change. Actors make up lines and plot devices on the spot. What's more, the writers are obviously reading talkbacks on message boards just like this one, and maybe even sculpting the future of the show from the feedback that they get. There were numerous attempts this past season to assure us that the show wasn't it Purgatory, wasn't a dream, and not occurring solely in someone's head. To me, that's pretty damn cool - big-league TV writers taking the time to actually LISTEN to what everyday Joe Schmoes like you and me have to say about what they're creating, and then doing something to let us know that they're listening.

Maaaaan! Chill! Are you JJ? You're missing me man! I like the fucking show! Big time! I'm happy for improvisation. I'm happy for changes, new ideas, expansions etc! Fucking A! BUt what I don't like is seeing something that makes me go WOW! What could it mean... when the entire crew is thinking the same thing! Other wise whats the point? Example: THe Black Mist, which no one seems to give TWO SHITS about any more (which seems strange to me!), well I love it, I don't mid not know what it means, but I love trying to figure it out. BUt there is nothing to figure out if the writers themselves don't know! You get me? How can we sit down and try to work out what the hell something means if the writers don't. That means they are sitting there saying: "OH cool! Lets put in some black mist!" "Yeah wicked" And then not having a fucking clue as to what its doing there! Now thats an example, so if they do know what that means, great, but I s usepct all the other mystery's they don't!

And why do things keep stopping? Like the black mist, polar bears etc. And as for a show with a story arc that spreads over 5+ seasons - I'm up for that baby! But only if they're not STREEEETCHING IT OUT! COs I HATE the episodes where they have fuck all to do with the mystery's of the island! I hate the episodes when its fucking, I dunno, lets pick, say, Freckles (Kate). Her back stories (flashbacks) seems to have fuck all to do with the island (so far admitdly, but would it harm to drop us a couple of carrots now and then?) and nothing big on the island seems to happen then. THats why Locke and Mr Eko are my favorite characters. Cos they are very interesting, very good characters who know something more about the island and every time we get a flashback we build and idea as to what that could be. Plus that usually means we'll see something great about the island!!! It won'tbe forgotten about for a week or two! Oh yeah... black mist...

Now Zarles, tell me... did you read that? :-)

They are NOT making it up as they go along.

    by minderbinder

The comment about the hatch says simply that JJ hadn't figured out what was in the hatch AT THEIR VERY FIRST MEETING. And they have admitted that they didn't have everything figured out WHEN THEY SHOT THE PILOT. The pilot was done in an insane hurry, they did the whole thing INCLUDING casting and INCLUDING planning and writing it in like 14 weeks. Ridiculous to do probably what is the most ambitious TV pilot ever filmed. But once the pilot was done, they got the writing team together and mapped out multiple seasons worth of story arc. Obviously they can make smaller decisions as they go along, or tweak things, but they do have it planned out. They've stated unequivocally that they never bring up a question on the show without knowing the answer. Period. And if you look at the show, there are no real plot holes. There are none of the inevitable fuckups we'd be seeing if they had nothing planned. Seriously, the only evidence of lack of planning is "boo fucking hoo, they haven't given me my instant gratification by telling me what the monster is yet, therefore they must not know what it is". If you don't like the show, fine. But the continual insistince by some douchebags that the show has no planning is just stupid.

"and every time we get a flashback we build and idea as to what that could be." Okay, so because of your interesting grammar I'm not exactly sure what you meant, but what I think you meant to write is that (and I paraphrase) 'everytime we see a flashback we learn more about the mystery of the island'. If I'm wrong, please correct. However, if that's what you meant to write then you haven't been watching the show. That's not at all what happens. That doesn't even happen 1/5 of flashbacks. The majority of the flackbacks are character specific. We learn something more about that certain character... not the island... or the mystery of the island. But... maybe that's not what you meant to write... and (I think) that is the reason why people have become disgruntled with this show, and why the viewership is down from the first season and why "LOST" didn't receive one Emmy vote for its second season. But, hey, what do I care? I'm hooked, baby!
