Herc's Fun Facts About BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 3.X To Know and Share!!

I am – Hercules!!

* Herc gives the third-season premiere somewhere between five and four and a half stars.

* The season picks up 134 days after the Cylons first arrived on New Caprica.

* The New Capricans are not freed from Cylon tyranny during the two-hour season premiere. Nor during the episode after that.

* At least one major character will never escape the Cylon’s occupation of New Caprica.

* About 2,000 humans managed to escape the Cylons along with Helo, Dualla and the Adama boys. At least one of the Adamas strongly advocates leaving the New Capricans behind and starting the human race over with the 2,000 escapees.

* There is no mention in the first five episodes of the Cylons allowing the humans to live only if they sacrifice some of their number to breeding experiments.

* In 3.1, both Tigh and Apollo have undergone shocking changes in appearance since we last saw them.

* Amanda Plummer turns up in 3.3, perfectly cast as a kamala-gulping soothsayer who has a chat with D'Anna.

* Starbuck’s blonde hair remains really long (at least until the end of 3.5).

* Sharon Agathon will not spend the entire season as a prisoner of the fleet.

* We see a representative of each of the seven models we’ve MET - a D’Anna (Lucy Lawless), a Cavil (Dean Stockwell), a Leoben (Callum Keith Rennie), a Doral (Matthew Bennett), a Simon (Rick Worthy), a Six (Tricia Helfer) and a Sharon (Grace Park) - getting to vote on extremely important decisions regarding the fate of Baltar and of the New Caprica humans generally. But the five models we’ve not met are apparently not given a vote!

    "I'm a fracking Cylon!!!!!!"

    by performingmonkey

Hang on a second, do you spell it 'frack' or 'frak'? The funny thing is, I think it's becoming more popular as a real-life swear, so can you imagine if in a few years time they had to censor episodes because it was deemed as offensive as 'fuck'. Why the hell can't they just use 'fuck' anyhow? Can someone explain in reasonable terms why the word 'fuck' would be unacceptable. You can say 'fuck' on HBO, so what's the frackin difference? It's not as though Galactica is for a family audience, what with Cylon gang-rape, people getting shot, stabbed and blown up (or put out the fracking airlock). You can have all that but no real cuss words apart from 'crap'? Stupid.

I think I know who's going to die...

    by Novaman5000

Ok, this is just speculation, but there is a shot in one of the commercials talking about sacrifice where Apollo is hugging someone, a woman, with a kind of lost/sad in his eyes. There's something off about the woman, and I think she could be dead. We only see her from behind, but she has longish dark hair, not unlike petty officer Dualla. I'm betting she's the one who dies... I could just be grasping at straws here, though.

    "Frak" a Rip-Off from Farscape???

    by Gorrister

How can Frak being a rip-off of Frill from Farscape? Frak was being used in the old 1970's series and, correct me if I'm wrong, Farscape came around over twenty years AFTER "Frak" was first uttered in Battlestar Galactica. Please explain how Galactica ripped off a show that didn't even exist at the time?

    Question from a non-viewer

    by readingwriter

I haven't watched since some of the first season (got bored) and I am not making an accusation since I haven't seen the show, I'm just asking the fans who DO watch: Do you like the New Caprica turn in the plot? Because it sounds like a bad move from the outside, like a reboot of the whole show--they willingly live under the Cylons, and then BOOM we're back to humans fleeing Cylons again. It sure seems like this thing has run out of steam. Again, I'm just wondering what the fans are thinking, because this sounds like a way to get rid of some dead weight and basically start all over again.

  • Sept. 3, 2006, 8:20 p.m. CST

    s/he who dies is

    by all your base

*spoiler obviously* the wife of the XO

  • Sept. 3, 2006, 8:24 p.m. CST

    BTW: Firefly

    by readingwriter

After I bailed on BSG in Season One, I finally listened to all the genuine whiners (as opposed to Hairy, who was KIDDING) and watched Firefly. Couple of cute women, and silence in space, and that's it. I guess I just don't care for cliched characters in cliched situations in the most cliched SF framework ("cowboys in space") just because that Whedon guy (the one who wrote Alien Entombment) "created" it. Since Farscape went off I haven't watched any new series. I never saw X-Files in its run, or Millennium, but have watched those and they're entertaining sometimes. Maybe it's true, the Golden Age of SF IS 14, and I will have to give up on it. I've been disappointed too many times. Maybe The Fountain...

  • Sept. 3, 2006, 8:24 p.m. CST

Do you mean tigh's wife? I can't remember who the XO is

    by Novaman5000

I feel like no one would care if tigh's wife died... I assumed when they said "major" they meant someone people actually cared about. Just saw another preview where Cally is running looking very frantic, I guess she could die, too. Are you positive on your wife of the XO thing? or is it just speculation. I should really brush up on my BSG season 2 before season 3 starts... I don't remember anything.

    Readingwriter, troll or retard?

    by Billyeveryteen

    You make the call.

  • Sept. 3, 2006, 8:27 p.m. CST

I think Firefly gets too much shit.

    by Novaman5000

It was pretty solid in my opinion and I really enjoyed the film. I hate when people "hate" on it just because of whedon, and I hate when people love it for the same reason. I just think people didn't give it enough of a chance. It also wasn't for everyone. It had a kind of goofy charm to it that could come across as corny sometimes, but it worked more than it didn't (again, just my opinion) It definitely took a few episodes for me to really get into it, but I felt the same way about BSG, too.

  • Sept. 3, 2006, 8:34 p.m. CST

    by readingwriter

Not that you mentioned me but I didn't give it shit, and I certainly gave it a chance--I watched every episode. The best one was the last, I'd been told, and the "mystery" was so obvious SPOILER I was sitting there thinking "She's in his ship using the communication system" END SPOILER I could only respond, when the credits rolled, "So that's IT?" I think if anyone else had made it, its pile of cliches would have been laughed at from the beginning.

SciFi's schedule for Fridays (all Eastern): 7PM - Heroes (encore of that week's episode); 8- Dr. Who; 9 - BSG; 10PM - Threshold.

Frak is From The Original 70's Galactica!!!

    by MetalWater

Frak was liberally used in the original 1978 series version of Battlestar Galactica...that said...Ron Moore has rip-off the look of Firefly special effects wise...the rack zooming...The shaky hand held camera...The bathrooms in space...The no aliens policy, etc. With that said...I think the new Galactica's ratings are so low because Ron Moore keeps pissing off the fans of other shows he rips-off...From Babylon 5 to Firefly, Lost, and even the Tom DeSanto version which Moore picked the bones of, after Fox and Universal pulled the plug on it!!! And then there is Ron Moore's complete attempt to piss off the fans of the original Galactica by not doing a continuation of the original series. Let me set-up how he could have done it, and had his cake and eatin it too. He could have simply started the new series on New Caprica where the survivors of the original 12 Colonies came to settle...having not found Earth. The Cylons find them and prepare to mount an attack...intro Apollo and Starbuck as they return from a deep space mission to find Earth aboard the Galactica. Finding off the Cylons, they save the last vestiges of humanity from new Caprica and head on a new course for Earth. The rest of the series could have played out just like what Ron moore gave us...with no skin off his back...with the added benefit of having the original Galactica fans on board to boost ratings, if nothing else. But changing Starbuck's sex...Boomer's sex and race...and then that of Commander Cane...well, it has been ratings suicide!!! In the version Moore could have made...The female Commander Cane could have been Sheeba from the original series. The female Starbuck could have been the original Starbuck's daughter...and Boomer could have been the daughter of the original Boomer, etc. How simple would have been to accomplish that??? But Ron Moore just had to fuck with...uh...frak with the original characters, just for the hell of it!!! Don't get me have a good's just not Galactica. You should have called it something else if you were going to change most everything except the names of certain characters, ships...and or certain fixed or loosely connected events!!!

    Readingwriter (dorkwad to english translation)

    by Red Ned Lynch

I haven't watched since some of the first season (got bored)<apparently the first season got bored. It was probably trying to make it through one of Readingwriter's faux grown-up posts> and I am not making an accusation<glad he warned us since an accusation would be a declarative and he follows with a question...maybe he meant not making an aspersion, or not being leading> since I haven't seen the show, I'm just asking the fans who DO watch: Do you like the New Caprica turn in the plot? Because it sounds like a bad move from the outside, like a reboot of the whole show--they willingly live under the Cylons, and then BOOM we're back to humans fleeing Cylons again <because to readingwriter living in peaceful properity before having your species all but exterminated is the same situation as exhausted refugees accepting hostile occupation, and the character dynamics and moral dilemmas seem pretty much the same>. It sure seems like this thing has run out of steam<which readingwriter supposes in spite of the fact that he stopped watching the show after it got bored with him, and so he wasn't making any accusations. See, preceding this statement is where the stuff about not making an accusation might belong>. Again, I'm just wondering what the fans are thinking<like readingwriter said, not an accusation, just a snotrag of an insinuating inquiry>, because this sounds like a way to get rid of some dead weight and basically start all over again<whatever that dead weight might be, on that show that I don't watch>.

Almost as strange as the fact that baltar never noticed the glowing spine of his girlfriend (obviously never did her doggy style). And come to think about it how come only six has a glowing spine (or maybe the chief and agathon couldn't satisfy sharon enough to get her to glow). Makes you wonder what glows on the men, maybe they have glowing ballsacks when they cum.

    by nemesisdarkside

Didn't Caprica-Sharon's spine glow when she had steamy-outdoor-rain-sex with Helo on Caprica? Spine glowing rocks however, I have a feeling they are gonna retcon it or just stop mentioning it. As it's kinda counter-productive like a sleeper cell terrorist with glowing body parts.

One more month. One more month. And here's the first faraway plea that Whedon hits it out of the park with Wonder Woman. I didn't hate Firefly, but I was disappointed in it. I still believe if it would have made it to season two it would have stepped on the gas, just like Buffy and Angel. But for right more month!

Whoever said BSG was copying Farscape with its use of Frak got owned! Hahahaha. Also, new BSG is a much better programme than the original and Moore didn't need it to lead on from the old series. I think the way that the show has been made transcends the Sci-Fi genre and open it up to people who would normally turn their noses up at SF shows.

I love BSG and Firefly equally. They both rock!!

    by Teamwak

I am seriously jazzed that BSG looms soon, but I dont see why you cant love both of them. They are both perfectly brilliant in their own ways. Firefly is Indiana Jones and BSG is Bladerunner. I love them both!!!

Since i'm crazy and love hurting myself I decided to start watching Carnivale. To be honest, I don't think its as good as battlestar by a long shot, but then again, i've only finished season one. Its definately a great show, and promises big things, but then again I know i won't get to see what those big things are...i'm just hoping that i'll see something really cool and thought provoking that its obviously building towards, but it seems to be taking its sweet time through season one, but if its setting up a really good season two...well...i'll press on. Anyways, I just felt like saying that, i do think the way it was cancelled sucks (apparently on a cliffhanger) but, i understand the with Battlestar Galactica, this show never lets me down, ever, and i've gotten people hooked who never watch scifi, and the comment i get is that its more in the style of a twenty four, as far as what kind of audience it could apppeal to...i think that its just 'cool' enough to reach alot of people, but clearly more intelligent for the people who might think that they are 'too cool' to like it.

Objective Firefly fan here who loves BSG

    by NervousPete

Man, it's depressing hearing the constant slagging match between BSG & Firefly. I loved Firefly first, thought it a very charming series with almost a great folklore vibe. I considered myself a Browncoat and recommended the series to all and sundry. Then I backed away a little as a lot of obsessives hijacked the cause and started causing grief. Gagh. Serenity was a good film and quite satisfying - and now the story is done and I'm content to leave it there. I was initially a little sceptical about BSG, as I am with all remakes, but when I read an interview with Ronald Moore I got pretty excited about what he wanted to do with it - sort of make it a 'The Cruel Sea' meets '9/11' meets 'Bladerunner' meets 'Silent Running' meets um, 'Battlestar Galactica'. Started watching it, and grew to be hooked on the desperate survival tale. Can't wait for this next series. Neither can Whedon apparently, follow this link to read about him bigging up the BSG series - Whedon's good - at times excellent - but his fans sometimes annoy me mightily. I can't see why people can't be fans of both shows though, especially since one is - frankly - dead, however undeservedly so. So in summary, there's tons of Firefly fans out there who really like BSG, accept that their beloved series has come to an end with Serenity and get rather narked off with obsessive idiots (and many of them are trolls deliberately provoking) who attack every other series because their beloved had the bad luck to be unfairly screwed around with and cancelled. There's an old saying which applies to the late Firefly, and the spiffing new BSG. "The king is dead, long live the king!"

Hey bud, for the record I am a big fan of Firefly, own the box set, own the movie, loved it. It's the Whedonite/Browncoats I can't stand. Wonder Woman will probably be okay, but I'm expecting it to be rather Buffy-like in how the big girl is characterized. Anyway, there's plenty of room for people to like both, and nobody ripped off anyone. I believe BSG to be far superior, but I love Firefly too for what it is and for the few episodes we got.

Don't paint the majority of Firefly fans the same shade of rust as the tiny number of maniac Browncoat trolls who occasionally plague these talkbacks. Most are just like you; they love the show but don't feel a need to bring it up to strangers every second. I can tell you from my first-hand experience at the AICN Buffy Bash a few years ago that Whedon fans are likely the best-looking and best-bahaved and least annoying sci-fi geeks on the planet.

I shouldn't paint them with so broad a brush, but unfortunetely there are a lot of bad apples spoiling that bunch. Take for example those idiots running the Browncoats table at SDCC for the last few years, bunch of stuck up snobs who have magic powers that help them determine who are or who are not "real fans" worthy of their attention. It's people like them that make me say I am a fan of Joss Whedon's work, but I'm no Browncoat. Jayne needs to bitchslap those fools.

Obviously a lot changed- we saw a pregnant Callie, Starbuck married, so obviously Sharon took Helo's last name during that time. As far as who gets it- no one would care if Ellen Tigh got killed off- how many of us were heartbroken when Billy was killed? Expect someone we have some investment in like Tyrol or Helo. Or even Callie. I just hope they don't do what they did in season two from season one which was change Crashdown from a semi-regular to a guest star which told us ahead of time he was dead meat.

    hey, I'm just as annoyed

    by oisin5199

when people use BSG talkbacks to slag Firefly as people are of others bringing up Firefly in BSG talkbacks. It just seems like as soon as anyone so much as mentions Firefly, people start to get really mean and cursing out those 'damn annoying Browncoats' or whatever, when none of those supposed people have actually posted here! It's like a strawman argument to slag Browncoats. I don't know about other sites, but here the only people I've seen be assholes about it are the Firefly haters and the trolls who pose as Firefly fans to get a rise out of everyone else. Hairy, at least you said you were just kidding quickly, but the damage had already been done, as said haters jumped on you, like the pavlovian response I'd expect. So again, thanks for proving the point. Anyway, can't wait for the Dr. Who/BSG back to back! Something actually worth watching this fall.

I think my favorite part of your retarded post (aside from wishing I had the free time you have) was "because to readingwriter living in peaceful properity before having your species all but exterminated is the same situation as exhausted refugees accepting hostile occupation, and the character dynamics and moral dilemmas seem pretty much the same..." As if objecting to the dramatic portrayal of a situation is somehow akin to REAL LIFE, you know, that thing you haven't a clue about. This is a scifi TV show, dude, and you're going on like I somehow insulted real life refugees. That you can't understand why someone who doesn't watch the show wonders if a show about humans living planetside and then upping and fleeing from the Cylons might be lacking ideas because it goes right back to that same situation again says a lot about your lack of perspective. That you take the time to snarkily examine a post instead of just answering the freakin question says even more. Get a life, or at the very least answer the question. I know flaming is the closest you get to human interaction, but please, attack someone who's actually slagging the show, instead of someone who's curious about it.

Nice to see you've taken your own advice re: not tangling with intellectual giants. Would be too difficult for you to actually discuss a scifi TV show, might hurt yourself. But you and your pals sure are explaining a lot about the show's appeal, for which I thank you. BTW none of the chicks on that show will ever have sex with you, you do know that, right?

  • Sept. 5, 2006, 9:03 p.m. CST

What was it that "bored" you?

  • Sept. 6, 2006, 12:15 a.m. CST

    by Red Ned Lynch

...I wasn't suggesting that you were insulting real life refugees. I was pointing out that what you called a reset in no way was one, and that even a cursory reflection by a non-viewer with the most superficial familiarity with the show's premise should have provided such an answer without it being asked. You've failed the reading part of your name. Cheer up, though. You've been right about one thing so far. The golden age of scifi is 14. When you get there it's going to be great. Galactica might not even bore you then. And free time, pal? You're the one trolling. Making fun of you for doing it? That takes less than two minutes a post.

I can't wait for Baltar to die.

    by Cylon Agent

He's my least favorite character on that show. Baltar seems like he belongs on Nip/Tuck, and anyone who belongs on Nip/Tuck needs to be killed off. In fact, they need to be killed in real life. Anyways... Oct. 6 can't come soon enough. I'm so fraking excited!
