FANTASTIC FOUR Arrives On The Cartoon Network!!

Published at:  Sep 08, 2006 6:51:12 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

This one is said to have been rendered anime-style. Some fans did not enjoy the anime when it was grafted onto Teen Titans, but the “Fantastic Four” animated series couldn’t possibly be any worse than the movie, could it? (At least with the cartoon we’ll presumably get a Thing who’s taller than Sue Storm.)

Find a tiny bit of the series’ artwork here.

Look! Plotlines!

"TRIAL BY FIRE," airing Saturday, Sept 2 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m.

Johnny is put on trial for crimes against the Kree Empire by Ronan the Accuser after destroying the latest in a line of Kree Sentries, alien robots that have been observing the Fantastic Four. When Johnny chooses Reed as his lawyer, Ben and Susan take the stand in Johnny's defense. But defending Johnny's reckless behavior is tougher than they thought, especially when the accused is presumed guilty before the trial even starts.

"DOOMED," airing Saturday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.

Doctor Doom hacks into Reed's consciousness, transferring his mind into Reed's body. Now trapped inside Doom's body, Reed must fight his way back to his family and friends before Doom transforms the Baxter Building into a weapon that could wipe out the Fantastic Four and half of the city.

"DOOMSDAY," airing Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m.

When Reed is accused of having purposefully exposed Susan, Johnny and Ben to the cosmic rays that transformed them into the Fantastic Four, the team is torn apart. But as Susan, Johnny and Ben individually wonder if Reed is capable of such a betrayal, they're attacked by the mastermind behind the plot against Reed -- Doctor Doom. Now the team has to escape Doom's prisons in order to save Reed and prevent Doom from plunging the city into the Negative Zone.

"HARD KNOCKS," airing Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m.

When an old friend of Reed's shows up looking for help, the Fantastic Four are in for the fight of their lives. His name is Bruce Banner, and he has a terrible secret -- he's the Incredible Hulk. And when Banner Hulks out and goes on a rampage through New York City, it¹s up to the FF to stop him.

"MY NEIGHBOR WAS A SKRULL," airing Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.

No synopsis currently available.

Now we’ll get to hear what Sorkin’s dialogue really sounds like coming out of Lauren Graham’s mouth when she guest-stars as herself as the guest-host on “Studio 60.” Two episodes!

I don't mind the anime style of TITANS

    by jonquixote

I really don't care about the animation one bit. It can be as clunky and crappy as the old 60's Marvel cartoons. What I do want to see are all-ages stories filled with imagination and that make good use of the FF characters and universe, not dumbed down or ridiculous crap. The plot synopsises sound cool - like they were written by people who know and like the comic - so here's hoping.

    by mister snitch

Nah, just my first post on AICN.

The story lines look to be very consistent with the best of the early comic, and there seems to be some insight into how the Four interact, which is great. I still wish it were more Kirbyesque, though. I long for those big bulky machines spewing electric plasma. (Now, those room-filling machines Kirby drew probably fit into something that looks like a cigarette lighter and runs on AA's. But I still miss them dammit.)

    Almost worse than the movie

    by lost in america

When will executives get that it all starts with the writing. What made Justice League Unlimited great, was the writing. Because let's be honest, there are some lame characters in the justice league, but it's how they're portrayed, that makes them cool. Fantastic Four has a good look to it, the characters look cool, until they talk or move. The animation is bad, the mouths sync up like a dubbed episode of some anime import, and the writing is almost as bad as the Tim Story movie. Think about how cool this would have been if Paul Dini or Bruce Timm, or Warren Ellis got their hands on it. It would warrant watching, instead of wasting 20 minutes of my life.

    so disappointing

    by waggy

what a completely boring first episode. seriously, nothing happened. ronan yelled at johnny for a while then they fought some robot dogs. i'd even accept that if the fight was animated with any kind of excitement. speaking of the animation, i didn't freak out like so many others did when i saw the character designs (and i still think doom looks pretty cool), but after seeing this in action, i can't get past the cheap, lazy anime (which doesn't fit the FF at all). why does marvel seem incapable of making a good animated series (or dvd one-shot), when DC has been so stellar for the past decade? i really hope the kids like this and it creates some new readers, because i'm not seeing much promise for adults watching this thing.

    Fuck Anime

    by herculesisapussy

That shit is just lame. Why choose an animation style that reminds people of all the crappy giant robots and magical schoolgirls? Anime shows can't tell a decent story because it's too steeped in Eastern styles of dialogue and "drama." It's insulting to western audiences because the it's a foreign show so to American ears the dialogue is not only inane, but it has the wrong rhythm (because it's being crammed into animation that fits the other language). Not to mention that stories are beyond repetitive. Why remind people of this with the FF animation style? Oh yeah, geeks in the US have no fucking standards and will lap up whatever pablum is fed to them.

    by solomon kane

We see Ben trip Roman, but, from what I can recall (except for the mechodogs or whatever) when a blow was done against another, we heard it off screen and saw the character fly back on screen and fall to the ground. What's the point of an action show when the action is done off screen? Boring and the voice of Reed Richards just didn't seem to fit. I'm interested to see what they do with Hulk... hope it doesn't suck.

an anime update/redux of the characters for younger viewers. On that level it was just fine. Alot of times I read these talkbacks and I wonder how many people are over 30 or 40 years old, and whether or not they realize that these shows are, for the most part, written for young people, not adults. That being said, the one critique I have is that Reed Ricahrds seems rather more "whipped" than I remember him. I think the Venture Bros. "Mr. Impossible" character is a much better translation of the character; this sort of dry, condescending, vaguely creepy stuffed-shirt know-it-all (but still a good guy). But, then again, Venture Bros. is a comedy written for older adolescents and adults, not younger viewers.

They don't get it? It just was so underpar. The Thing may of had the only good voice. The designs were trying too hard. The design/color mix seemed off. Okay I am not a kid, but I did my best to look at it through my former 10 year old eyes and still would of found it lacking. Heck when I was a kid and they did the Herbie the Robot thing and it pissed me off. Can't someone with all the skills and desire do some Kirby type FF stories. Oh wait can you imagine if Bruce Timm got a hold of this property? Oh well they are aiming the show at me so if it is liked out there enjoy. Just my 2 cents.

I almost shat myself laughing when Johnny saved the Kree kid from the robot dog. Even the stupidest kids had to see the whole plot unraveling at that moment. What a lazily-concocted act of heroism. Are they even trying? They must have exausted every cliche ever in just that one episode, not to mention the "Judge this!" bit, which is ever the hallmark of a shitty writer--kid's cartoon or no. I'm not really a fan of Justice League, but at least its writers don't assume that their audience is retarded. Fuck Marvel.

    by simongarth2001

Marvel execs do not have a fucking clue how to do their characters justice. They think that they have to tinker with the look and feel of these characters, when in fact, they do not, or never have needed Marvels "updating"
Marvel cartoons have ALWAYS sucked. Noctice how DC toons, sometimes never have background music? Thats because the writing is always so good....and the voice actors treat the material like it was an actual film, and not a silly cartoon....that it just comes off in a class, higher than what we are usually spoon fed.
Marvel sucks. They do not have a clue...and dismiss the fans advice at every turn. They Need to pay Bruce Timm a few million and let him be in ABSOLUTE charge of their animation department....Marvel needs to start COMPLETELY over....and stop trying to update and re-define the classic characters. DC respects their characters...Marvel shits on them and their rich history.

Obligatory comments about the Thing's stupid spray-painted chest logo, Johnny's flaming DRAGONBALL Z hair and Reed's wimpiness aside, the script was on a par with SUPERMAN: BRAINIAC ATTACKS, albeit less memorable. Oh, and how about that catchy theme music? I've been humming it all day...or I would if I hadn't forgotten how it went about 1.2 seconds into the episode. More importantly, I enjoyed them in the appropriate context: as entertainment written for young people. The one place where the DC cartoons stood above (arguably) was in their uniqe visual style (c/o Bruce Timm), where as the FF cartoon was clearly trying to copy the anime style (not unlike the Teen Titans show). Other than the more unique look of Batman, Justice League, et al, they were all pretty standard superhero cartoons for children, weren't they? Or did I miss something?

What i am saying is...DC toons will have entire long scenes with just very good voice acting (off from very good scripts) and Marvel, most always, has some kind of background score....like they are doing all they can, to cover up their weak assed voice actors (and, while we are at it...stupid weak assed scripts.)

    by e.c.

"they were all pretty standard superhero cartoons for children, weren't they? Or did I miss something?" The difference is that the old DC shows, the old XMen 'toon, and even Teen Titans treated their material as well as their AUDIENCE with respect, and that translated into much better written, acted shows that can be appreciated by people old and young alike. As opposed to this neo-anime stuff that's made SOLELY because kids like the art-style and vapid, repetitive crap like Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto gets big ratings. The writing and acting on these shows can be crap 'cuz they think the audience will eat it up as long as it looks like anime. To be fair, Teen Titans did initially turn me off with its SD anime slapstick, and it did manage to still be a pretty solid toon. But I still doubt this FF does as well. I do long for those 90s Marvel toons...

    Good Job

    by red-x

The first episode was actually good. Better even than the first season of Justice League (which took some time to find it's legs). 1)Intro - the theme music and designs worked great to give it a fun almost spy feel like the Incredibles 2) Anime - the modern anime update works. The integration with 3D was fine and they didn't go overboard like the hyper-excessive GI Joe Sigma 6. 3) Story - the plot was fun and the action starting (thankfully) without an origin allowed us to jump right into the excitement. 4) Comic Faithfulness - despite the anime look the characterizations were near-perfect with the Torch being a cocky young guy who won't necessarily stay a jerk as he grows up, the Thing looked right, sounded right, and was the best moving version ever, Sue didn't do much except be the older sister but that was fine, and Reed also was fine. Over all this was a great first episode, looks like it can still appeal to kids, and has a lot of room to explore. Only complaint - why couldn't the movie be like this?

I really fail to see how they're not showing their audience "respect." They made the show in this style because this is exactly what the target audience (children) wants; anime-inspired action/adventure. You say it so yourself in the post. Again: perhaps this show wasn't made for you; it was made for younger viewers who enjoy "neo" (or americanized) anime -- much like Teen Titans (another show I enjoyed in the context it was written for). As far as the other DC shows are concerned, yes, the visuals were unique n that they strove to not just copy anime, but I'd hardly call it anything more than generic juvenile entertainment. It was still good guys vs. bad guys; still featured character 'types' rather than fully fleshed out personalities. I fail to see the difference between the two. I mean, none of this stuff comes close to Miyazaki's or Otomo's work, but it doesn't really have to either.

definetly not what i wanted to see, but i'll give it another chance. this wasn't the first episode. i read somewhere there is another episode that goes chronilogically before this one. for some reason they aired the second episode first. i hope the kids like this crap, as someone said above and start reading the comics. and i hope the new x-men cartoon doesn't go the anime route.

with you 100%, but my little guy loved it. Keep in mind that he is 4. We don't watch much television in our household, but he likes it so unfortunately I will watch it.
And... does anyone know why Justice League and Batman are on so late at night? My little guy loves these shows, but he is not staying up that late, and who owns a vcr anymore? Will just have to purchase the seasons, I guess.

not only did the animation look really bad, but it was repetitive and tried way too hard to be hip.

You definatly missed season 2 of Justice League Unlimited (aka Cadmus Story arc). Say that stuff is juvenile with a straight face.

Try watching the old-school Batman episode "Heart of Ice". That stuff is deeper than any "adult" entertainment I've seen on TV today.
