Optimus Has A Really Big...Gun!!

Merrick here...

The infamous tfw2005 message boards have turned up a picture of Optimus Prime (as seen in the new TRANSFORMERS movie) totin’ a big ass gun.

Here’s the pic, which originated in THIS PARTICULAR THREAD. The image was apparently nabbed during the Magic Clothing Trade Show in Vegas.

As hard as I try, I just can’t shake memories of MEGAS XLR.

Keep an eye on this post. It’s possible (but not certain) we may be adding something else in a bit!

Wait, did Optimus even have a gun in G1?

    by Ricky Henderson

    he didn't, right....?

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 9:06 a.m. CST

I suspect he's compensating for something

    by Terry_1978

I mean, look at his anatomy for christ's sake. On topic, this is probably the most accurate version of a character I have seen yet in relation to the rest of them. But he does have the most iconic look aside from Megatron.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 9:08 a.m. CST

    Read the script this morning.

    by Grando

The gun is in there. I like what I read BTW, the only thing I'm not sold on thus far is the appeareance of some of the 'bots. But, there is some sweet action in there and if anyone can make action look real pretty it's Michael Bay.

The G1 toy Optimus had a gun. I want to cry, never has such a possibility been so flushed down the toilet.

I can't wait for this like a lot of other thirty-somethings who've been around since the very beginning. Prime looks waaaaaay cool, he's in a big-budget, live action movie with a Director who has a proven track record with big-ass, loud effects movies AND Peter Cullen's doing the voice. After seeing megatron, this is awesome in comparison!

    by tile_mcgillus

At least there is some Optimus Prime in there! Flames are horrible but the weight is there finally. I still feel there should be more car exterior panels instead of guts. This is by far the best thing we seen so far (doesn't say much). As for the script.......yeah that is a bad time.

    by Shermdawg

I've only been here a little over a year, but I gotta assume this has to be one of, if not THE most talked about film since AICN's inception. How does this stack up against Star Wars, X-men, Spidey, and LOTR? Harry, Mori, Quint, any of you been keeping score? What's the ranking on these properties?

If Grando isn't a plant, then he's just a douchebag. How can you say Bruckheimer makes action "look pretty"?!? The Rock? Armegeddon? Pearl Harbor? It's just explosion after body flying after explosion. The most mindless method of action I can think of. Still...I hold out a sliver of hope for this doomed POS.

Is Megatron a confirmed design? Is it concept art? I can deal with the look if it is before Megs lands on Earth and morphs into an Earth object. Otherwise, blah. That gun looks bad-ass, however.

Look at the casting, its "kiddie centric" those expecting a dark & serious adventure will be left weeping with the children. Its all about the toys and a G rating.. DOES NO ONE MAKE GOOD MOVIES ANY MORE???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

There using a bigger style truck for Optimus right?

    by Shermdawg

Then why is he skinnier than the G1 version? He should have, just a bit more mass about him.

    by zekmoe

If there was a lamer concept in sci fi in the last 30 years, I'd love to hear it. This is nothing but a toy marketing product. Not an interesting story. I have no idea how this will turn out as a movie, but I'm sure I'll never see it and I'll bet real money that it stiffs. No way you're going to get a female of any age into this movie.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 9:36 a.m. CST

    Mr. Turd Furgusen

    by Mr Nice Gaius

It's looking more and more like the Megatron design is a done deal. (Although, I assume they are still tweaking it a bit.) His appearance is definitely a pre-Earth/Cybertronian form. From what I understand, he's been frozen on Earth and doesn't really have much of an opportunity to acquire a new mode. However, I'm hoping that they will have a surprise instore for us at some point in the movie.

    by Turd Furgusen

I haven't seen anything leaked that has the image on a "licensed product", so I was a little more skeptical. I'm in the same hoping boat with you. A surprise here and there will make this a movie to see in the theater as opposed to DVD. Otherwise, I am still on the fence.

    by zbbrox

I like that the head looks like Optimus, but I think this design is nearly as bad as Megatron's for being far too busy. Just giving a robot design as many moving parts as possible doesn't make it cool.

    by CorranHorn

Well, I've read the script that's floating around. I didn't think it was too bad, myself. I can see what Speilberg called it a 'boy getting his first car' movie though...the TFs (besides "Soundwave" which I assume has been changed to "Frenzy") aren't really shown in bot form until the halfway point, other than Prime the Autobots don't really have any lines, and I think Megatron only had like 3-4 lines towards the end.

That actually looks pretty cool. Flames and all. I think I am going to quit being a whiney little geek and give this a chance. Until we see how it all looks up on the screen, it's pointless to critique every little aspect of everything. With that said, I am a little skeptical of Megatron. While he looks cool, there's no air of Megs about him. You need something to envoke familiarity.

Read the script!!! Megatron show up at the end. He is still in his cybertronian form. Maybe if they make a part 2(god forbid), he will have a new form. As a hardcore fan of G1(I have the entire series on DVD from japan and most of the original G1 toys from my childhood packed away in boxes) I think about the only link from this movie to the original show will be Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. Sorry.

Okay. I'll agree to give this Optimus design a chance. Even if the colors hurt my eyes. All I ask is atleast change megatrons head so the it looks like he's got the helmet on with some what humanoid facial features rather than a crabs. Don't have to change the body or the alt mode, just his head.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 10:31 a.m. CST

    Read the Script?

    by psiclops

if you truly read the script and know anything of transformers, you would know that this movie deviates from the origins completely.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 10:36 a.m. CST

    So what if it deviates?

    by decypher44

Seriously, why do you care? Are you THAT pathetic? "OMG, OP doesn't have flames!! Die in a fire, Michael Bay!!! Camaro? A Camaro?!? Bumblebee doesn't talk, well one line, because he was injured in a battle! What about all the great campy lines? What ever will I do? I'll go listen to Linkin Park and cry myself to sleep!!!"

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 10:38 a.m. CST

Yeah, at least Prime looks kinda familiar.

    by Ricky Henderson

I can't say the same for the Megs design. I'm still secretly trying to cling on to some hope for this film. I'd like to think that they've revised the cript since Feb, but thats doubtful, judging by the fact that many of the leaked images correspond with scenes from the script (the autobots in sam's yard, megatron frozen in ice, bumblebee tied up and on his hack). Bay can still deliver those action scenes. The city climax does sound fun. Hoover dam didn't work for me however.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 10:45 a.m. CST

    It's not that it deviates.

    by Lost Prophet

It's that it is crap. Only a plant or an absolute cretin would think otherwise. For the record, I don't mind this design too much (at least compared to that megatron), because I can actually recognise it without being told. BTW way Decypher, the fact you proclaimed "I'm not a plant" pretty much gives you away, so you are damned either way- also taking the piss and calling those that care pathetic is planty type behaviour. This is fun

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 10:47 a.m. CST

    by fox5200

After reading the script like many others this AM, I'm stoked for this film. The Transformers may not look like like they did when I was a kid, but this is a different incarnation and the right feeling is there. I still hope the design for Megs is re-worked a bit...

because that would mean I'm no longer an accountant. Accounting sucks. I just thought the script, aside from some of the bad dialog, was pretty cool. I'm looking forward to TRANSFORMING robots duking it out. I'm looking forward to the chase scenes. And please remember, the original "story" was based on a toy line. It's not like were takling about Wuthering Heights or Citizen Kane. And don't worry, you'll be able to get your hands on the original movie on DVD soon. You can watch that in your mom's basement with all of your freind (see, I made a joke there) while playing with your G1 toys. It will be great!

    Rodimus Prime had flames...

    by Childe Roland

...after his Matrix transformation. In fact, this version of Prime looks very much like an Optimus/Rodimus hybrid and I'm digging it quite a bit, flames and all. Every time I start to think the haters are right (based largely on the lackluster designs of the decepticons) about this movie, I catch another glimpse of this Optimus design and I get jazzed for the movie again. It could still suck, but this will always be a kickass looking Prime...BFG and all.

Michael Bay for the voice of Unicron!

    by IAmJack'sUserID

Since they both want to destroy the Transformers, they have that connection, and I think it will carry over into Bay's performance. Seriously, I love TF, but you know what? My expectations are at ZERO -- no, wait...they're at NEGATIVE because Bay is the biggest hack, and his shit movies are the most cliched, mindless pieces of drivel ever to be shat from the ass of Hollywood. You think he's suddenly going to be capable of quality? Do you think his ego isn't going to twist and turn Transformers into his own abomination? Do you think he cares about the fans? If you answered YES, please take your place against the wall with Grando, TrueRed, and Corranhorn.

that some people think that I am a plant, but here's some proof that I am not. I have been posting on AICN talkbacks for longer than I can recall. Originally under the moniker Darth Statto, but I changed to Grando after the bogus Ep2 story. I usually stick to Coax talkbacks and have even been mentioned by the mighty Hercules the Strong in a post - Thanks.

Off to the fence we go!

    by Peanutchan

Okay. Here we are on a fence. one side 'good movie' one side 'bad movie'. I have personally desided to sit on that barbed wire covered cast iron picket fence until the movie comes out. Then deside which side to fall uncontious into. Yes I hate the designs but maybe if you squint your eyes it may be passable as a good movie. Or Stevey will come to his senses and take over which ever comes first. So lets all sit on that fence and atleast try to be humane to each other shall we?

    not sure

    by cabbageheat

i don't know. you can't really get a good view of his gun from this perspecive. though i'd have to say it looks, once again, too busy. less is more, and i think some of these designs have been overdone. his gun appears to have too many gizmos and junk hanging off the end. the G1 gun was spot on, simple and devistating.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 11:24 a.m. CST

    Yes, Lost Prophet,

    by decypher44

You are getting paranoid. I swear on all that is holy that I am not a plant. I do not work in the entertainment industry. I am a lowly accountant for a major NON-ENTERTAINMENT or PR company. My work consists of spreadsheets, analyses, Oracle BS (I loved PeopleSoft) and chatting with you fine folks. I just don't see why some people get so worked up over this. I guess I would like to know, aside from dialog, what certain people are so upset about. You know, like specific examples.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 11:27 a.m. CST

    Transformers Movie props in disguise.

    by AGE IIX

The thing that bugs me the most (well after the GOD AWFUL redesigns) is that they don't even talk in the movie! Prime only has a few lines, The only bickering between Megatron and Starscream is in "56k modem speak" Bumblebee has only one toe curling line of text. IT BOGGLES MY MIND THAT WE ARE GETTING A TRANSFORMERS MOVIE WITHOUT ANY REAL DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE FUCKING TRANSFORMERS!!!???

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 11:28 a.m. CST

    Could not care less

    by Mgmax

Let's think about the reality here. 2-1/2 hours of Michael Bay shooting giant robots as they clang against each other and go "arrrrrh!" To me, that is the death of cinema as an artform. Why not just pour a bunch of bolts into your garbage disposal and turn it on? It'll produce the same effect.

    by Telestream

Okay. Listen. I don't know what the hater's problem is. I just downloaded the script from the Internet and IT IS AWESOME! It's almost exactly like the cartonn T-formers movie from the 1980s. It starts on Planet Lithune, and then Unicron arrives and devours the planet, and then the action moves to Moon Base One and then to Earth. It is pretty much NON-STOP action, and we get to see tons of the great familiar characters (even Perceptor!) There are hardly any human characters, but hopefully they can get Scarlett Johansson to play Arcee's voice (Are you listening Mr. Bay?) cuz that would RULE! So even if they have "updated" the "designs", don't worry, because they have stayed totally faithful to the original story and when you see it in LIVE ACTION it will totally OWN YOU! omg, I can't wait.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 11:32 a.m. CST

    by decypher44

I completely agree. The Transformers (Auto and Decept) need more dialog. And the humans need less. Just cut out the lame one-liners and "Credit Card" scene and fill it with more Transformer dialog.

...the more I like it. I dig the feet now (never thought I would). But they look powerful and designed to carry a lot of weight. I'm starting to see where certain parts pull apart and how they then mesh together to form the truck. It's true: everything about these guys is going to transform. Very detailed. And it looks like the eyes are a golden yellow. From what I understand, that's a nice tip of the hat to some of the comic renderings. So, I'm looking forward to seeing the head & face revealed. Right now, I have no problems calling this "Optimus Prime".

    Transformers!? WTF.

    by Cylon Agent

I still can't believe they're making a Transformers movie. I remember watching Transformers as a kid, and I didn't even like it then. I suppose Michael Bay has to feed himself, but at what cost? Thousands of disgruntled parents are going to be dragged into this film when it releases, only to find that it was even more terrible to watch than they expected. These kinds of films are why sci-fi isn't respected they way it should. This is why I sound silly when I recommend great sci-fi shows like Battlestar Galacatica and... um... Battlestar Galactica to my friends. The whole purpose of sci-fi is to reveal things about our world that couldn't be accurately described otherwise. Case in point, H.G. Wells' War Of The Worlds. So what kind of depth can I expect from Transformers? Nothing. This movie is nothing more than a special effects orgy. Explosion porn, if you will. And just like porn, this movie will be entertaining and serve it's purpose for about twenty minutes. After that, it's just people (or robots) fucking each other over.

Look, guys, the reason for the flames is...

    by Childe Roland

...pretty obvious if you think about it. They help him go faster and to pick up big-haired robot chicks on Cybertron's south side. In all seriousness, though, how conflicted would you guys be if the above poster, who speculated that the flames will be a thematic element carried from leader to leader in a future installment when Hot Rod is introduced, turned out to be right? I mean, that would sort of follow canon and would imply at least a bit of reasoning behind the design choice. Would it still honk everyone off so much? I think the Megas comparison is apt on a number of levels. How recent was Megas? Who was its target audience? Do you think maybe Bay & Co. are trying to rope in the same demographic? I'm not saying it's what I would've wanted under ideal circumstances, but I can see what might lead a guy like Bay in this direction. And the end result for Optimus really isn't bad at all if you can get past the societal connotations of flames on a truck. He's a cool looking robot that definitely pays homage to the original design on a number of levels. Megatron, on the other hand, I couldn't even begin to tell you how they came up with that.

...if that's REALLY how you feel about the liberties they've taken with the property (which, I'm sorry, goes way beyond G1 and has allowed for some pretty wacky interpretations of characters in both the toys and the toons) in this movie, then your issues run a whole heckuva lot deeper than whether or not you should see this movie.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 1:44 p.m. CST

    Well Shepard . . .

    by Mechasheeva

you might have a point there if this movie was based on anything resembling real life. Unfortunately it's based on a cartoon/toy line. But the flames on that thing really scream "look at me! I'm desperately trying to be cool!" which is never a good thing.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 1:47 p.m. CST

    MNG has it right

    by Turd Furgusen

You have to look at OP for the sake of it being a robot to market to the teens and tweens. Not to us 30-something G1 geeks. I like the style the more I see images of them. The flames are growing on me. It would be cool if his skin shifted in battle mode and those flames flowed across him and weren't a static pattern.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 1:50 p.m. CST

    He's pretty fucking big....

    by Hairy Nutsack

Take a look at his chest, those are the front windows in the middle and the doors open on the sides (4 windows can be seen on chest), that makes him way bigger than he was before. What still bothers me about this and everything else we've seen is by and large they are cool looking things, well designed, and probably cool as hell when they transform, BUT they are not Transformers just because they happen to be robots that change shape. They had shape changing vehicles on Speed Racer too, wouldn't call those Transformers, G-Force anyone?

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 1:53 p.m. CST

    That's right

    by Jak0lantern01

make the designs more busy to add even more static to the minds of teens and tweens. Like they don't have enough ADD problems as it is.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 1:55 p.m. CST

    OH please

    by Jak0lantern01

let someone skilled like Cameron do G-Force. That's one property that could easily teeter on being silly or flat out awesome if done correctly.

At least it is recognizable as Prime

    by TheSecondQuest

It's not as "WTF??!" as Megatron, and it looks more like Prime than Bumblebee looks like his original. If all the bots looked as recognizable as Prime, I'd be more acceping of the designs. I mean, Megatron doesn't even look like a Transformer.

    by Jak0lantern01

you're a dumbass. Why are you even here? Once again I have to defend the notion that we here are 'movie' people on a site/board designed for 'movie' people. SOme people make it their hobby (hey, it's better than a boat in a bottle). Like you, we were fans as kids, and now they're making a live action movie for ALL ages, which is fine. Problem is, they expect us to drop our money into their wallets to see this, and we want an acceptable product. What they are doing is making a mockery of a long lived franchise. That, and they have lied in the past about what they set out to make. Go to DOn Murphy's boards if you want a love-fest.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 2:14 p.m. CST

    by Shepard Bauer

You Do Realize Hasbro Has The Final Say On Designs Rite

    by DrTobiasFunke

A lot of you whiny bitches probably don't know this, but Hasbro is responsible for approving ALL character designs in the movie. Don't like Megatron, Starscream, or Optimus? Bitch at Hasbro. Don't like the dialogue or story elements? Bitch at Bay. The two are mutually exclusive. As for me, the only way I won't see this movie is if I'm dead by the time this movie comes out. I was a HUGE Transformers fan back in the mid 80s and I've always wanted to see it in live action form. Hell, if I can sit through the abomination known as Masters of the Universe, then this one should be easy as hell. Prediction. When the first trailer is released this winter, it will be the most downloaded trailer so far this year. You heard it here first. Call me a plant if you want, but with the amount of hype this movie is getting (good and bad), people can't help but see for themselves.

    by nords

Im a big TF fan and right now what ive seen so far its very scary. Prime face look nice but the rest look ... wrong. Megatron, Starscream and Bumblebee are the worst of all of them. All I can think now is that we will have all those "its wrong" though when we will watching that movie.

as long as the story is good, the acting is good, the directing etc are all good and the movie is entertaining and pays homage to the series. So far though, they've cast bad actors, and the images they've shown us indicate some really bad design work. And Bay shoots some decent action scenes(though sometimes too reliant on close ups, fast cuts and slow motion) but I don't know if I'd categorize most or any of his movies as great. Some were awful.

I haven't read the screenplay, so I don't know if it's got a basis in reality. But I would accept something like that as a justification. I was looking back through the thread and was tickled to see the word "apologist" come up. I think it's a little early to be branding folks with that iron, isn't it? The movie isn't out yet so, technically, no one has anything to apologize for. At this point it's still just a debate between those dead set on disappointment and those still willing to keep an open mind. And even that is pretty pointless. That said, more theories from folks on why the transformers in this movie look the way they do would be enjoyable. We've had some good ones so far. Come on, you typing monkeys! Entertain me! ;)

I've only read the February draft...

    by Ricky Henderson

Is there a more recent one? The draft read like your typical mundane summer action flick. Pretty boring stuff. The script reads like a rehash of previous lousy blockbuster movies (godzilla, ID4, National Treasure). The biggest problem is the lack of robot dialogue. I feel so silly typing that, but its true. The script needs more robot dialogue. And hot, hot, oily, robot on robot action. That always get me going.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 3:42 p.m. CST

    Whoa, superninja...

    by Childe Roland

...has anyone officially affiliated with the film actually said this is supposed to be a retelling of G1? That's been tossed around by a lot of folks, but I've never seen it attributed. The closest I've seen anyone come is Bay saying something to the effect of he thinks it will make fans happy. Simply using some of the same names doesn't obligate this to follow G1 mythos or even for the characters using those names to follow the templates established in G1. Those names have been recycleed and reassigned throughout the life of the transformers toy franchise and in all of the various tie-in cartoon properties. So I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that this is supposed to be a G1 film.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 3:43 p.m. CST

Yeah, I never read scripts online. I, like the Bush

Is there a link to that interview, superninja?

    by Childe Roland

I'm not trying to claim it doesn't exist or anything, I'm genuinely curious to read what they've said on this matter. I htink there's an overwhelming sense of betrayal among certain fans and, if they were indeed promised that this was going to be a G1 Transformer movie, they may well have some basis for those feelings. But I'd hate to think it was all a case of groundless expectations and personal preferences not being met. Oh...and, no, I have not read the script (said that above). I generally won't read scripts or screenplays. I think you're missing more than half of what will make the movie if you just judge it on the script (and that's speaking as a writer who thinks most folks undervalue things like story and character). I read some of Tarantino's screenplays before the films came out and they told me almost nothing of the experiences of the films (Pulp Ficiton was far better than the screenplay implied and From Dusk 'til Dawn was infinitely worse).

    How is that semantics?

    by Mr Nice Gaius

Based on G1 implies that it has a set of similar characteristics that makes it identifiable with the overall key elements of G1. A retelling of G1 means that they would essentially try to duplicate the cartoon show and/or comic from the very beginning. They never said that was their intention. No way, no how.

    Bumblebee from G1

    by psiclops

As I posted on the Megatron TB. The bumblebee charater is not the same. The writers split bumblebee's charater. The mustang is called bumblebee and is a transformer, but the charater of bumblebee has been written for a human teen named "Sam". He is the underdog, weak, yet he has a strong heart and will sacrifice his own life against insurmountable odds to save the lives of others. The Mustang "muscle car" is just that Muscle, the car is his bodyguard. They split the original bumblebee into two charaters in this movie and the two of them together are bumblebee G1. Hopefully, you were being sarcastic.

My problem isn't the fact that Bay has decided not to do a G1 movie but the utter lack of respect for G1 and prime is inexcusable. from the Script i read they failed at getting the characters right and turned the entire thing into ID4 meets treasure hunt, meets TMNT3. ILM can not save this movie, Peter Cullen can not save this movie, Frank welker can not cave this movie, hell rising chris latta and SMC from the dead could not save this movie. the only saving grace would be to total that script get rid of every major actor tied to this thing save Spike his father.

Gaius, I hate knives. How about fisticuffs?

    by superninja

Of course I wanted G1. It makes a certain amount of sense, but I realize that the TF movie in my head is not the one that is going to make it to the screen. I would be less annoyed if they had just been honest about their intentions to completely reinvision TFs from the start. But instead they have been duplicitious to placate the fans. Regardless of my feelings about G1, though, the real problem is that script is crap, no matter the iteration.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 4:50 p.m. CST

Okay, after reading the Q&A with the writers...

by Childe Roland seems they were definitely saying that the characters would be based on the G1 characters. Not having actually seen the way the characters talk or act on screen, I can't say yet to what extent they succeeded or failed in that regard. But they were very clear about the characters NOT being visually based on G1 (even just in the bit you quoted), which seems to be the source of much of the complaining (I know I had some hilarious discussions with folks on looks alone). So no promise was broken there. As for the story being a retelling of G1, they went out of their way to say that wasn't the case by saying: "The story is designed to be understandable to all movie goers be they fans of the Transformers or not. References will be made that fans will understand but the moive will appeal to all. They see this as an amazing opportunity to do something on par with Jurassic Park! Plus there will be hot guys and cool smart women for both the female and male fans alike." Not having read the script, I can only hope there 's more to it than that. But, even if there isn't, no one was promised anything more. So nobody lied about anything and any resultant shattered hopes for something more or different are pretty much self inflicted. A few other points of interest from that Q&A (at least for me): "One thing they were clear about from the begining was the relationship between Megatron and Starscream will mirror that of the original G1 Cartoon." If they follow through on this (and their promise about Bumblebee's character being intact in all ways but visual), that could be a big plus. I didn't really expect them to recreate every character dynamic, but this is an important one and it would be great to see them get it right. "Q: Why so few Autobots compared to Decepticons? To outnumber the Autobots and put them at a disadvantage. Ths makes for very intense action scenes with the Decepticons firepower far outweighing that of the Autobots. This will also be telling of the larger Cybertronian War, these are the only Autobots availble to stop Megatron at that time due to the war raging elsewhere. The Autobots have to use their friendship to win." I kind of dig this. One of my only complaints as a kid collecting these toys was that the autobots WAY outnumbered the Decepticons in those first years. It made it tough to see them as the good guys, since they were always fighting the decepticons two and three against one. This dynamic appeals more to my sense of cosmic moral proportion (that the evil often does outweigh/outnumber the good...which is why it's so rewarding to see the good prevail). Really, I can't help but think people read a whole lot of what they wanted to hear into those other statements, though. So far, the film makers appear to be following through on what the writers intended to and said they would do.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 4:57 p.m. CST

    The Script

    by Mr Nice Gaius

As I've said in the Megatron TB, I've read worse. I think that version of the script is very "loose". Certain points within feel very "outliney" to me. (Honestly, I wish I had avoided it for the spoiler factor.) Now, I'm well aware that they've already filmed key sequences from that are taken directly from that screenplay. I don't think there will be much change in structure. However, as far as the dialog goes, I think there may yet be room for improvement. As of right now, I don't think they have much filming left to do (I think I read that somewhere last night). So, any major changes to the script would have to have occured between February and the start of principal photography. But we all know that filmmaking is a constantly evolving process. And there is always the possibility of pickups, reshoots, etc. Surprises can still happen guys.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 4:57 p.m. CST

Rowland, it's kind of like Superman Returns

    by superninja

One camp was saying it wasn't faithful to Superman (they were right), and the other saying it was faithful to Superman (they were wrong) and then proceeding to make all kinds of loophole reasoning/excuses for the film. :) Having read the early draft version of the TF script, these writers can make all of the claims they want, but the shooting schedule is following that script, and there was very little in the way of faithful characterization, any characterization for robots at all, and even a modicum of respect for the original core of the mythology. For starters, if you rob the characters of their human traits that is a huge problem and shows they don't even understand the allegory as it was originally concieved. We get right back to giant robots beating each other up - what more do you want? Well, a whole lot more than that.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 5 p.m. CST

Gaius, just because you've read worse, what kind

    by superninja

of excuse is that? Of course there is room for improvement (with a bulldozer, perhaps), but the story structure absolutely reeks. There is no originality to be found here.

The screenplay is functional. I admit, that version could use some work. Primarily in the robot-to-human dialog ratio. But if you want to get nitpicky about it, the story structure is far more coherent than the original TF movie. That thing was all over the place!

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 5:15 p.m. CST

I get what you're saying, superninja...

    by Childe Roland

...and Superman Returns is probably an excellent example to help illustrate a counterpoint. No one can argue (at least not convincingly or successfully) that Superman Retunrs wasn't visually faithful to the original films (which was Singer's clearly stated intent). Now, he also talked a great deal about character and how he was taking Superman to places he hadn't been taken before (specifically, being hte "unwanted savior" and discovering he was a father...oh, SPOILER for anyone who really, honestly didn't know that...sorry). Now, Singer was obviously a DOnner film fanboy and had established some comic geek cred with his interpretation of X-Men. So I believe him when he says he felt like the character of Superman (who for all practical purposes could've been a Reeve clone, especially in the Clark Kent scenes) as depicted in his films reacted to those new things exactly the way movie Superman should. To help drive this home, he had his movie Superman react to a number of situations in EXACTLY the same way Reeves' Superman reacted to similar situations in the first film (right down to lifting lines of dialogue). Yet you still had fans, mostly of the recent comics (which are a very small part of Superman's overall mythos) reacting violently to the very notion that Superman might leave Earth for a prolonged period (which he's done in the comics) or that he might father a child (which he did in the Dark Knight elseworld) or that he could possibly not know he had a child (he's not omnipotent in any incarnation I've ever seen) or that he would've ever effectively "stalked" Lois (the entire relationship of movie Clark to movie Lois has been as a sort of Stalker, not unlike the gimpy British guy in Something About Mary, given that he's pretending to be someone he's not and less than he is and using that illusion to be close to her in a way he doesn't feel he can as himself). Anyway, all of that said, I didn't care for Superman Returns. But I can honestly say it's because I would've preferred that it had been LESS faithful to the films that came before it. I would've enjoyed it a whole helluva lot more had it taken the Batman Begins route, which wasn't a note-perfect faithful interpretation of any previous rendition (and, just like Transformers, there have been many differing renditions of Batman over the character's long life), but which managed to hit on the essential elements of the character (even while changing his iconic looks). From what I HAVE read so far (and I haven't read the script yet, but I can't just take any one person's interpretation of the script as gospel any more than I can trust anchorite to tell me who's dead and who isn't), this seems to be more the route that Bay and Co. are trying to take with the Transformers. Personally, I'm very curious to see how it turns out. I think it may well please a lot of Transformer fans. They just won't be the very vocal contingent of G1 fans who refuse to acknowledge any other interpretation of their favortie characters. And I guess that's fine for them. I prefer to leave the door open to be pleasantly surprised...even if it does give me a glimpse of something as ugly as that Megatron design.

There's just too many little things that need to be changed to make this movie right. Megs needs a revamp. They need to call this thing they're looking for The Matrix (not the Energon Cube, I mean, how simple would that be?) They need more interaction with the damn transformers, I mean, it's TRANSFORMERS, not "kid gets a car and wants to get laid but shit gets sidetracked with big robots". Reading the alleged script that's online, ALL the transformers dialogue just doesn't fit at all. Jazz talked straight. Starscream almost seemed respectful of Megatron, albeit only because he says all of 5 words. I can just imagine Chris Latta's voice jabbing at Megatron "Nice of you to thaw out and join the party, oh mighty Lord Megatron." And the ending just feels too hacky... again, more human involvement than transformer involvement. All that being said, I'll still probably go see it, piss and moan about losing my $11, and then go home and enjoy the real movie's 20th anniversary edition for the umpteenth time.

Script problems - I'm happy to help

    by superninja

    1) Non-existent characterization for Transformers. 2) Too much time devoted to human characters who are stereotypes with poorly development motivation, the sole exception being the Sam character, although he is also a cliche. 3) Humans have more screen time than robots. 4) Changes to the mythology and relationships are poorly developed then never explained, such as: Prime and Megatron being brothers, why they need the Energon Cube, Megatron's "special abilities", etc. 5) Energon Cube is a deus ex machina. 6) Plot is incoherent and filled with conveniences that are incongruent. 7) No overarching theme or larger meaning to the story.

I guess the reason I stick to my guns is that I think I'm right. I think if Singer had been faithful to the character and his themes instead of undermining him, the film would've made tons of money. It's the same with Transformers. Everything is derivative of G1. G1 is the Genesis of Transformers. Why you'd want to fix something that isn't broken, as Hollywood is known for doing, baffles me. I thought they wanted to make money? The reason G1 is so fondly remembered is that the characters and stories are strong mythology that stands on its own.

Why is there a need to explain...

    by Childe Roland

...changes to the mythology when the mythology of G1 wasn't used as a basis for the film (or for a number of the toy backstorieds and cartoons after G1)? This is a new story. They've been very clear about that. Changes in character relationships could be a valid complaint if we're talking about the Starscream/Megatron dynamic, which they said they'd honor. The Prime and Megatron relationship really doesn't need justification in this mythology. It's just backstory for a new story featuring familiar characters. As for the Energon Cube being a Deus Ex, I've got four words for you: Autobot Matrix of Leadership. You're making some valid points, superninja, but a lot of your complaints are stemming purely from the (willfully?) erroneous supposition that this is supposed to be a movie that adheres to the story and mythology of G1. The writers were very clear that it isn't in the link you provided.

...I see you've come to the same conclusion that I did about your very strong feelings on the subject, and it's totally cool to have those feelings of preference and frustration that the film makers don't see things the way you do. I just wanted to clarify that a lot of the frustrations people have really aren't the result of being lied to or misled. They're the result of what they'd rather see happen. It probably won't convince anyone who's already that pissed to give the movie a shot on its own merits, but it might make for more intelligent discussions (like the one we've been having) ont he subject. Peace.

The Matrix is really not a true deus ex, because

    Darn it, superninja!

    by Childe Roland

You know that's not true about all of the toons being built off G1 mythology. Beast Wars didn't even tie in until the end of its second season, and that's the most closely related subsequent toon to G1. Robots in Disguise was completely self-contained and had no tie to G1. And Armada began an entirely new continuity with no ties to any previous incarnation (Energon was a direct sequel to Armada and Cybertron was a reboot of continuity in Japan that got badly dubbed to tie in with Armada continuity in the U.S.). So that argument just holds no water at all.

    by NYSCO6390

if you look at how RID, Energon, and especially the Japanese only series, were compared to Beast Wars and G1, you can see that the more closely they do tie to the original the better they are. I wouldn't have too much trouble with Megs and Op being 'brothers', hell all Sparks come from the Matrix one way or another, but it just seems like it's a quick hack tool to put in some drama. OOOoh, can honorable Optimus Prime (who based on the floating script shows barely any of the real character we know him to have) actually slay his evil brother? Not that it's much of an issue anyway... One thing I just thought of... with Megatron stealing sparks for his own power, even if they did do something similar in Beast machinesit just seem a little too much of a rip off of good old Highlander to me.

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 5:54 p.m. CST

    The good ones did

    by NYSCO6390

have the Transformers as the main characters. The more human involvement there was, the crappier the show was in my estimation. G1 and Beast Wars kept human interaction to a relative minimum. RID had kids helping to save the world. Some of the japanese series had humans actually becoming the transformers. G1 and Beast Wars gave each character their own personality, while it did often coincide with some kind of archetype... cocky hotshot, grizzled veteran, backstabbing schemer, sarcastic doomsayer, etc. The fewer characters, the more development there was, as was the case in beast Wars and why there SHOULD be plenty of development for a measily 12 or so 'bots in this movie.

    To answer your question, superninja...

    by Childe Roland

...(and I wish I didn't know as much as I do about the latter incarnations, but my nephew is addicted) about "Did all of those shows have the Transformers as the main characters, have them as familiar archtypes not alien monsters, and give them human personalities?" Yes and no. They introduced human protagonists who fight alongside the Transformers (mostly kids are focused on) and who, in many episodes (particularly of Armada and Energon) seemed to marginalize the the transformers themselves to supporting roles. Optimus is a big reddish truck in these latter series, and the guy voicing him is doing his best Cullen, but there's not much in the way of character to (much less any effort to humanize) him or any of the other robots. Aside from momentary "thrown in" bits of characterization (as if the writer remembered "Oh, yeah, this toy's tech specs say he's got a temper...I should have him act mad for two seconds") the dialogue and actions of all but a few characters during specific episodes could be interchangeable (and the dialogue is just horrible). I have to say that the Cullen impression lends the Prime in these toons most of his "personality" for me, and then only because it evokes memories of the G1 Prime for me. And this movie is going to have the actual Cullen voicing Prime, so it's already head and shoulders above any animated representation of Transformers since G1 (at least for me). Megatron doesn't look or sound at all like G1 Megatron in these newer toons and the guy doing Starscream seems to ocassionally channel Chris Latta's inflection, but the dynamic between him and Megatron is actually very different than the G1 characters (in these new toons, Starscream's a suck up and an overacheiver who seems more concerned with winning Megatron's approval than leading anything himself). But none of these newer toons are G1 or even based on it, so those points about the differences I just made are pretty meaningless. The most important point being, they are most definitely toons about and called "Transformers."

This seems almost surreal that there is even a Transformers movie being filmed. A director whom is classified as an A-Lister, this weather you agree or diagree with his talents. This a popcorn flick, nothing dreadfully serious about it. I will leave my brain at the door and embrace all aspects of this film. I have seen Optimus as a 1984 robot and a 2006 retake and, now the film will bring Optimus Prime to life on film. The robots may not be seen very much throughout the film, but I suppose less is more.

Man Work Is Pissing Me Off

    by Playhouse

I totally missed out on this announcement and I'm late to the party. Way too busy at the end of the month. So..... this is the full Prime.... Hmmm..... It's both a bit better than I thought and a bit worse than I pictured based on the leaked concept design. I still hate the mishmash of blue and red throughout the torso. And it still seems far too busy throughout the design. He also seems to have the stature of the AT-ST from Star Wars and not enough bulk. There is something that recalls the G1 look to it but it is far too wispy. Prime should be a rock and this guy just doesn't come off as all that solid.

    by MarkoOhNo

In robot form, the flames look like paint splatters. lol At least he's starting to look a little bulkier and a little better covered. It also looks like they added in the exhaust pipes. So long as they keep up the adjustments, and make the others look as close to G1 as this is... it may be passable. I just pray that script leaked isn't for real... and that the whole Furbies thing they filmed is cut. A horrid story won't keep me in my seat, no matter what they do in special effects. I caught a little bit of Anacondas: The Hunt For The Red Orchid on TV earlier and, I hate to say it, but even THAT had a better script. lol (BURN!)

As much as we love G1 and as much as most of you hate Michael Bay we can't blame him for the designs. He is just the director. The Don Murphy Q&A/pathetic escapade

by tile_mcgillus (the Don Murphy Q&A)I asked the tough questions, the questions we all want to know. All I got was ridiculed and demeaned (rather poorly I might add). Apparently he didn't like my tone of voice (typeface choice I guess). It was kind of like being punched by a paraplegic. Just sad and pathetic. I played by the house rules, never said anything derogatory. It is really kind of nice. I now know the kind of arrogance, and disregard for fans we are up against. It goes much deeper than I thought. I ask him about the change of depiction of the decepticons, he asked me Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. Apparently Don Murphy doesnt like getting proven wrong and made the fool by some nobody with a sweet name (he resorted to calling me Tool Mcgillus/ Tilex Mcgillus....witty. LOL). His shitty movie will come out, 15 years old boys will enjoy it and thats about it. I still have my toys, comics, memories and pride (Something Don Murphy lost a long time ago). I want to issue an apology right now to the production of Transformers : I'm sorry. I'm sorry for loving the Transformers. I'm sorry for caring about your movie. I'm sorry for voicing my opinion. I'm sorry I didn't use the proper tone of voice to Don Murphy. I'm sorry I made Don Murphy look like a fool in front of all his friends and lackeys. I'm sorry I don't like the shitty design of Megatron. I'm sorry I asked Don Murphy simple questions. I'm sorry I don;t follow blindly the Michael Bay train to Blowstuffupland. I'm sorry I don't find Monkey Chicken Robots with canon arms attractive. I'm sorry I wanted this movie to not suck. But mostly I'm sorry for being right about this. Oh and Don Murphy is the new laughing stock of the internet. DM just got jugg fuckled by literally every transformer fan in the world. talk about pwnage.

This I don't mind AS much, it's not as G1 as I would prefer, but I look at it and see Prime. Just read that CHUD BS

    by Phategod2

I can see being optimistic i was optimistic when I first head Spielberg wanted to do a Movie based on G1 and how big a fan he was. then slowly my optimism wained first the pick of micheal Bay i'll admit I've enjoyed most of bays movies but This is a total different undertaking you can't let martin lawrence ans will smith adlib a script you can't tell Bruce willis to do the whole "wrong place , wrong time guy thing for the 1,000th time" he actually has to create Characters from scratch so to speak. then the leaks pics and list of Tranformers And found myself saying "Who the hell is that" "why the hell are the doing that" and then the "1,2, mike tyson in his prime punch." the megatron photo which is him in his robot form by hasbro why would they make a toy based on a form he is not going to have for the entire movie, which brings us to the script, which is atrocious as every designs I've seen. I dont have a single bad thing to say about Spiderman 3 or even Ghost rider for that matter, for the most part they seem to be handling those properties right but in the meanwhile, Transformers is over here getting JuggFuckled By Bay, Murphy, and were being told to just sit back wait till the 4th wait give bay your money then complain. Well fuck that and fuck desoto or what ever that little pricks name is Im not bringing 10 friends who dont know what Transformers are I dont give a flying fuck how this piece of shit turns out at the Box office your not tricking me and my friends out of there money, you want my money you show some God Damn respect, You said you making a movie based on G1 then make the fucking movie and stop bullshitting I dont give a fuck about Transformers: Robots in disguise or ,Energon, or, Cybertron, you tell me your doing a movie based on that and I'm not going, you tell me your doing a movie based on G1 im there and thats why they lied thats why they got Cullen to trick you in the theater they can not fool me and most of the people here into there Transformer ass raping. Superninja Knows more then anyone what the TF's mean to me and definately Optimus. I was not expecting a faithful rendition of prime but something that paid a little respect to the concept of prime and that faggity ass design , and bullshit ass script does not repsect anyone especially the BS designer, and screenplay fucktard who came up with that shit. I'm not spending Dollar 1 to see that shit or any sequel it inspires. Too soon!

    by superninja

You know, maybe it was too soon for a Transformers movie. I'd be really curious to see how 300 turns out, with its highly stylized look. If it works, imagine this type of treatment applied to TF?

  • Aug. 31, 2006, 11:26 p.m. CST

it could be pretty groundbreaking for comic book and animated to live action films. Imagine He-Man or Thundercats done in this highly stylized way? Much more palpable than traditional live-action.

    Just read the script and...

    by Frankenblogger

...I've come to the conclusion that John Rogers has never been a fan of the original show and simply watched some of the eps on DVD. Sort of. It's almost like he skimmed through eps and heard little bits here and there and never really immersed himself in the world of the Transformers. I simply don't feel he had an ounce of respect or love towards what he's writing about. It's lackluster and uninspired. What I find funny is that Rogers concocted the "Energon Cube" to avoid having to use an object that would harken directly to another science fiction film series yet totally rips of the end from the first film in that series. I am, of course, talking about the Matrix of Leadership. What else? Very little Megatron and then his demise (LAME). Bad dialog. Too much Bumblebee (who CARES about Bumblebee?). Too many humans. Megs and Prime calling each other "brother". Gawd. This script sucks. It sucks so bad I wish I hadn't wasted time and brain cells. I'm done. I've had it. I am going to try my best to put this travesty out of my mind. For me, 2007 brings Spider-Man 3. Maybe if I focus on that a bit more I'll feel better. Thanks for nothing, Bay and Co (and you, too, Don Murphy)! Consider me one person who will not set foot in a theatre (much less pay admission) for this heap of shit. Perhaps in another 15 years someone else can come along and actually do the Transformers franchise justice.

    by ganymede2010

Here's a clear example as to why Bay should of stuck with the original G-1 designs. Although I like the new Megs, This picture of Prime proves that these bots can look cool if Bay would just stick to the script. And stop changing shit to piss off the whinners. If Bay would scrap his current AWFUL Starscream design and have him look like his G-1 incarnation he'll win over alot of whinners, including me.

    Flame Design (yes, I know)

    by adonais

So I know everybody has complained about the flame design on Optimus til their faces turned blue, but this is only like my 4th post ever on this site so I thought just I'd make one point. I was bored and decided to check out what was said on the Yahoo writer's chat, and I think that's where I saw it said that the reason they put flames on Optimus was to give the truck parts on Optimus' chest visual interest, because otherwise they would be solid areas of color; something about those parts of the truck functioning visually like ribs. Well that's exactly what his design needs, some areas of solid color. Like all the other designs, he's a jumbled mess of busy parts with no focal areas other than his head. These designs could use some areas of flat color. C'mon, if Spielberg can replace walkie-talkies with guns 20 years after post production, he can certainly remove flames from a truck during principal photography! - Note: before all the attack dogs on this site throw every curse word at me that they learned last year on the playground, (and I'm sure you will - yawn) I am not bitching or screaming into the air here, just throwing out some feedback because I've read that the perpetrators of this train wreck read what fans say on here. -

  • Sept. 1, 2006, 1:03 p.m. CST

Regardless of the fan reaction, Don Murphy's

    by superninja

    behavior has been very illuminating.

  • Sept. 1, 2006, 1:05 p.m. CST

In terms of design, I think primary colors

    by superninja

and color blocking works better in terms of making an instantly recognizable, iconic look. It probably is a lot more difficult to animate cleanly in CGI, though. All of this detail will probably keep the eyes from picking out flaws.

  • Sept. 1, 2006, 1:09 p.m. CST

    However, flames are still corny.

    by superninja

Can't help but think they could've come up with some more appropriate design element. I mean, Rodimus Prime looked kind of cheezy in my book, but then his vehicle mode was terrible anyway.

    by pelos_locos

there is a damn Optimus Prime picture posted. Good thing still there to save it. Anyways, not the original (which I really liked) but is huge and seems to make major damage. HELL YEAH! I was at first really pissed off about what they were doing with our movie, but, after lowering my expectations to the floor, is beginning to grow on me. And I don't care how G1 hardcore fan you are, you look at that picture and you know is OP. There.

    Pay attention Don Murphy.

    by one9deuce

If you deviate so much from the source material you alienate the geeks who love the material. This film is not going to pull in the average movie goer. This film is not going to pull in women of ANY age. And with these massive changes this film is not going to pull in geeks in any substantial numbers. You have yourself a big failure on your hands come next Fourth of July. You think you would have learned after The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Stay true to the source material. There is a reason it has worked for 20+ years. Honestly, it isn't that fucking hard!

  • Sept. 1, 2006, 4:07 p.m. CST

Let's transform this movie into a bomb!

    by Badger999

There's a lot of us who don't like the direction this movie is being handled. Let's vote on it in the only way that matters... with our wallets. Get a bootleg copy and watch it first. If you know anyone interested in seeing the movie... give them a copy of the bootleg. Let's NOT spend any more of our money on movies that are NOT what we want to see. We shouldn't pay to see a TINO movie. And if I'm wrong, and it ends up being cool (and I'd like to believe that), *then* go spend money on it - see it in the theater and buy the DVD. Do not obey Don Murphy, Michael Bay, Dreamworks, or anyone else in Hollywood... we, as individuals, control the money, and that is the means by which we control Hollywood.

So far a few of you have responded. Those of you who have skills and experience modeling, rigging, and animating in Maya. Those of you who have skills in film making and storytelling. Those of you who are FANS of this property. We have until June of 2007. We can make a better film, even if it's a short, than this group of incompetant liars. So, I say we do. I swore I would never do this, but e-mail me., I have produced two half hour live action films and two fifteen minute documentaries. I have also assisted on crew for many of these films. I have directed three animated short and I am currently co-directing a half hour short, and a two minute short. I have experience in many programs including Maya, and Final Cut. I can work cross platform and I enjoy what I do. If you want a REAL transformers film contact me and we will get started. Even if this is considered a "Fan film" it's still going to be better than what we will get in July 2007 from this group of assclowns. So again if you are interested in working on models, rigging, texturing, or animation, then contact me. I am at Frankly, I'm tired of seeing the poor treatment we are getting and I know we can do better.

Yes, there has been countless redesigns of the Transformers and those designs stayed within the confines of the Transformers look... blocky robots where you can clearly see evidence of the characters alt mode. These movie designs do not follow that ethic so they become something else that in the minds of the majority of TF fans is not Transformers... then add the fact that the mythology of the series has been totally pissed on by that sack of shit script and I then have no option but to 'write this off'

    My money's on VENOM

    by darthSaul666

I've been scrolling through this talkback and getting a few chuckles from it. ( especially the talkbacker that hadn't heard of Comicon before and their knuckleheaded remarks they had posted in retort of their ignorance..... what a maroon ) My money for 07 is on Spidey 3. I'm hoping VENOM is great. I'm rather apathetic about this film, To paraphase something from a previous post, TRANSFORMERS IS A TOYLINE. Most anything to do with TRANSFORMERS, is at it's heart, meant to generate visiblity for the toys. Mind you that dosen't mean it won't be a fun movie. But personally I more excited to see what Sam Raimi, the filmmaker who brought us the EVIL DEAD trilogy, will do with VENOM.
