Sony Pictures Classics Big Christmas Movie Trailer Online! Chow Yun Fat! Gong Li! Zhang Yimou! Holy Crap!!

Published at:  Aug 30, 2006 5:18:22 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I haven’t seen anything about this film until I was sitting here in my office, working on this week’s DVD column, and I put on ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL to watch as I worked. On the front of it, there were a few Sony Pictures Classics trailers. I’ll usually let them run because Sony Pictures Classics has taste, and they generally cut great trailers. But I had never even heard of this film until the trailer began, and now, it’s one of my most anticipated films of the year.

I apologize in advance for the format of the trailer, but it doesn’t look like Apple.com’s got this one up yet. This looked great on my DVD:

"Moriarty" out.

I got my fill of Zhang Yimou's pointless films after seeing House of flying daggers.
He should take his talent for making flamboyant art pieces and direct musical theatre.

Wow, another high production historic romance disquised as a soul-less 'epic' martials arts film. You'd think HK learn/emulate the positive aspects of Hollywood instead of it's worst characteristics. Thank Jebus for Kungfu Hustle and Fearless.

    by nate champion

The reason Hero and House of Flying Daggers worked as well as they did was they actually had a story to go with the costumes and action... this trailer is too costume and sword and "from the director of..." to be convincing. If they actually had a movie that was worth more than the sum of its parts, wouldn't they want to let us know?

    Here is the plot...

    by kampbell-kid

SPC's press release stated.. "the volatile balance of power between the King (Chow Yun Fat) and the Queen (Gong Li) and his three sons, which entails betrayal, deceit and passion, pitting King against Queen and father against sons". Sounds like a dysfunctional royal family story to me. I love Yimou's films, it is like he channels the visual styles of A. Kurosawa.

How many damn times can you see armies of garishly clad asian people slamming into each other with stern looks and shiny objects and still care? The problem with these movies is that they so blatantly defy all laws of physics and odds in the conflicts that there is no tension. Sure, good guys may die but they will say and do every last thing they need to do before they actually expire. In other news my script Curse of the Jaded Bastard is still not optioned.

    by johnno

For that alone I'll check him out. I haven't seen 'Raise the Red Lantern' and only seen Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Hero was awesome! House of Daggers kinda disappointed me, but had its moments. And how can any of you idiots judge a story based on a trailer that tells you nothing about it? Like, holy shit! If anything it's a bad trailer, and probably an early teaser at best to get the action loving crowd hyped up... The other film Zarles might be wondering about that he did before this is 'Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles' and no, it's not a martial arts film.

I have seen all of his films and it's true they are totally different and much much better but these last few in which he caught the worlds attention he's just recycling his same stuff over and over again. Sadly because Hero and Flying Daggers were so popular hordes of similar films have flooded the marked. Lush in design and execution but empty in the story department.

    by chickychow

fuck all these historical, mystical, flyin around martial arts weepy fuckin movies begging for a cinematography oscar. i want Yimou to make a movie about three guys who kidnap roosters off of farms and sell them to Chinese whorehouses where they get cornholed by rich international business types until one such visitor, an american diplomat, falls in love with one of the roosters and engineers - along with some seedy but gentle-spirited street hoodlums- to break said rooster out of the house of whores where he can quietly introduce it to a life outside of being asspoked and fetish tickled, until he slowly learns that the farm from whence it came is where it truly belongs, that it cant just be dressed up in ladies undergarments and lathered with $200 a bottle perfumes, that it ultimately must live a quiet life of solitude where it struts around a dirty driveway and darts its head into the dust for nibblets and small insects..he makes THAT fuckin movie, i'll go see it.

There, now the title of the movie will actually show up on the page. This article doesn't mention the title at all, what the fuck is up with that? Trailer doesn't give much away, but still looks pretty cool. At this point I'll pretty much go see anything he directs based on Hero and HOFD.

I kind of like trailers that evoke a mood and don't reveal too much. It's better than some gravelly voiced narrator explaining the story with cliches. It's particularly annoying when it's a foreign film and they try to disguise that fact but not having any dialogue in the trailer, and just have some american guy explain it. I liked Hero, HOFD was meh. At least this one doesn't have Ziyi Zhang (Zhang Ziyi?) with her emotionless, cute tough-girl schtick.

Well, that was a shitty trailer.

    by harry weinstein

Zhang Yimou's HERO - great movie. HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS was way, way too full of itself - if it was an old Shaw Brothers martial arts flick, it would have been fine, but given the (admittedly gorgeous) Zhang Yimou "epic" treatment it just felt overblown. This, well, I have no idea, because other than the cinematography, that trailer was totally worthless. No sense of the story at all. And was it really necessary to have TWO sets of title cards for Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li, in a row? Did I forget what I read 15 seconds ago? And if you need to be reminded of who Chow Yun-Fat is, then you have almost certainly never heard of THE KILLER, and thus making that association accomplishes nothing except making Sony Classics look desperate and clueless about how to market this film. And the producers never should have changed the name of this from CITY OF GOLDEN ARMOR, which was a good title that certainly would have fit just fine with the film. CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER sounds like a sequel to CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION. Funny that the Weinstein Company FINALLY gets its shit together with Asian movies at the same time that Sony Classics goes totally clueless.

    No story?

    by hoichitheearless

It's a trailer. It's a trailer for a foreign language film. Ever notice how they don't like to have people talking in foreign languages in trailers? It's because they don't want to piss off morons. They want people pay for their ticket then turn to their spouse and say "uh, betty sue, you didn't say nothing about no readin'". Usually foreign film trailers got the Voice of God narrator spouting off cliches to let you know there's a story. This one didn't use that. Read this next sentence very carefully. That doesn't mean there is no story.

i was watching this stuff when you brats thought Transformers were cool, and i feel no embarassment at saying Hero and Flying Daggers blow. Beautiful cinematography does not make up for dull storytelling. I've seen Raise the Red Lantern, it doesn't blow, but i don't want to see this guy go back to that well, either. Though, Gong, Li is some kinda beautiful...anyways, i'll see it on DVD just to groove on the sets
