DREAMGIRLS TV Spot hits online - along with AFI's 100 Greatest Musical Ballot!

Published at:  Aug 29, 2006 10:13:41 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with our first real footage from DREAMGIRLS - the musical that's been being test screened to excellent results recently - and is due out in the awards season from Dreamworks and Paramount. If the film is nearly as good as the reports we've been receiving - then we're in for a delight this December. Meanwhile - the Yatterling sent me this, the AFI's Ballot for Picking the 100 Greatest Movie Musicals. listed in alphabetical order - but... I have to ask... Where's THE WIZ, SGT PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, SOUTH PARK THE MOVIE and XANADU? Sigh... They don't get any respect at all...

Here's your DREAMGIRLS TV Spot!

Johnny Depp's first musical. Certainly worthy of a mention.

    No Blues Brothers??!!!

    by the guy who nods

And why is Dick Tracy on there? All the songs in that movie are incidental as they're all sung by showgirls at a night club.

I didn't look at the list...

    by beamish13

but I'm guessing that BREAKING GLASS and LADIES & GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS aren't on it, so it's moot.

    re: GREASE 2

    by beamish13

It's a cult classic dying to be rediscovered. I love how it's more nihilistic and less romantic than the first (the characters only want to screw).

that film is much more music-heavy than the rest of the disney movies on that list. hell, fantasia isn't nominated either.

Well, technically, all songs in Cabaret...

    by lenny nero

...are incidental as well. Musicals are not defined by breaking reality. I do protest the lack of "Phantom of the Paradise," though. And "Newsies" is actually quite a huge cult hit for anyone under 28. Seriously, any theatre person knows all the lyrics.

    by mechashiva

I refuse to acknowledge any list that ignores Gold Diggers of 2001, Gold Diggers vs. Mecha-Diggers, Diggin' 2: Electirc Dugaloo, and I Still Know About that Gold You Dug Last Summer

This Is The American Film Institute

    by filker-tom

Might A HARD DAY'S NIGHT have been left off because [a] it's more of a concertish film than a musical and [b] it's a primarily British production...?

    No Phantom of the Paradise...?

    by hokeybutt

AFI blows it once again. Oh well, at least they snuck in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

And where the F is The Blues Brothers? Another American musical classic with no respect.

    by prisonrulez

Is it just me...or was Jesus Christ Superstar strangely left off the list....Damn Yankees is on the list...a nice musical about SATAN, but JC Superstar isn't?? Just further proof that Hollywood has sold out to the Devil!!

beamish13: uh, they only want to screw in the first one

    by chrth

The only romantic one is Sandy. And she whores herself at the end (although the original stage production is better because Sandy whores herself, but Danny quits the track team and doesn't letter)

    by chrth

No Godspell? WHAT THE FUCK?!? I can take no Xanadu, but seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?!? This is a bullshit list. I'm officia-diddly in protest and am boycotting this production.

    it ain't 100

    by streeter

Not like we can expect a correction, but: Nowhere on the site does it say 100 musicals.
It's 100 Years of Musicals, not "100 years, 100 musicals" It will be more like the AFI's soundtrack list (which was 25 out of 250 nominated films).

Not that it's undeserving, just that it actually made it on with so much left off, and thank you to whomever mentioned NIGHTMARE BEFORE XMAS, that's inexcusable.

    TOMMY is British.

    by lenny nero

This is American Film Institute. Notice how there aren't any Renoir, Carne, Melville, Kurosawa, Fassbinder, Herzog, Eisenstein, Tartovsky, Fellini, Truffaut, etc. films on the list for the Top 100 Movies list from back in 1999 (or was it 2000?).

    Pretty solid list of candidates.

    by excaliburffolkes

Looks like they were trying to include a little of everything. Interesting that "Song of the South" was admitted (rightfully so), but "Flower Drum Song" wasn't; and, is probably still considered as too un-PC.

    no love

    by seattlebuff

the AFI apparently doesn't have much love for last years two box office bombs, RENT and THE PRODUCERS, even tho they both received better notices than several selections on the AFI list.

    no love for Briccuse

    by seattlebuff

two well-received musicals composed by Leslie Briccuse, SCROOGE and DOCTOR DOOLITTLE (which won him an Oscar and was up for Best Picture) were left off.
