Sunday Brings The Last Regular Episode of DEADWOOD Ever!!

Published at:  Aug 27, 2006 2:03:46 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Ellsworth is dead, George Hearst has bullet-wound in his shoulder, and a paid army of Swearengen muscle – led by Hawkeye and Wu - appears to be converging on the camp to take on the Hearst army that’s already there. Oh, and it’s election day.

Tonight brings the last regular episode of “Deadwood,” but HBO plans two TV-movies to wrap up the camp’s tale. No one yet knows when these TV-movies will find their way to us, but it won’t be anytime soon as creator David Milch is currently busying himself with his HBO surfer series.

This post is dedicated to the 17 talkbackers who talked back to this site’s last post dedicated exclusively to “Deadwood”:

RIP to one of the greatest TV series ever. I watch every episode 2 or 3 times the week it airs. Not to mention how many times I rewatch the previous seasons. HBO is seriously dropping the ball right now, at least Showtime seems to be coming on strong to take HBO's place with worthwhile programing.

    by herculesisapussy

Rome was mediocre, Lucky Louie is an abomination, The Comeback was atrocious, Curb Your Enthusiasm has gone crappy, Sopranos has sucked for a while, and just about anything else decent on the channel has been cancelled. Tonight's broadcast of Deadwood will be seem a lot like HBO's death rattle. The end is near, unless they fire whichever dipshipts are greenlighting the crap TV, lately. Oh, and thanks for the Deadwood talkback, Herc.

This has shaped up to be a brilliant season - the Hearst storyline has been gripping. Hope he get's his tonight!!

Can't believe the show is going out on such a high - there feels like so much more story to tell. Typical HBO! Will never forgive them for Carnivale.
Why couldn't we have had a 2 hour movie wrapping up it's storyline?

In a single episode of Desperate Housewives than there is in a whole season of fucking self-indulgent Deadwood. AICN hates DH because the women are over 40 and it not an "art" show, but it's really the most nasty and subversive hour on TV. Kind of like a contempoary Pee Wee's playhouse. You obviously do not watch Deadwood then if you think that. I can't think of a single episode of DW that lacked at least one or two great comedic gems. This season has had plenty, my favorites being EB speech about the "maniac Bullock" and Al punching Johnny because he figured out Wu's drawing before he did. As for DH = PeeWee playhouse? Call me when Teri Hatcher opens her cabinet to reveal Jambi and starts chanting "Meka leka hi eka hiney hoe!"

and even if we do, it'll probably be two years from now, just when i think i've come to terms with the passing of probably my favorite tv show of the last five years. i wish i didn't already know what happened to george hearst. it would make this series finale all the better, though last week's episode was one of the best ever, even knowing what would or wouldn't happen to hearst. the scene where ellsworth's body was carted through the main thoroughfare was beautifully shot (no pun intended).

One of my favorite actors is Timothy Olyphant. That being said, I fucking hate Bullock on this show. I just wish they had gotten someone else, especially in light of the fact that the rest of the casting is amazing. Maybe the way Olyphant plays Bullock is exactly what Milch wanted, but even if it is I wish he had gone a different direction with the character. I dont know what kind of person history makes Bullock out to be, but I doubt it is even close to the wierdo that we are seeing on Deadwood.

i've liked olyphant in just about everything else in which i've seen him, but he's totally out of place on "deadwood." i don't know if it's just the fact that bullock is written as such a flat character or if olyphant is really out of his depth, but he just strikes the wrong chord almost any time he's in a scene. that said, i do always look forward to bullock kicking some ass, which only happens from time to time.

Deadwood is a show for academics who still want to feel like they're something hardcore. It tries for Mamet-level dialogue jousting, but just comes off as overdone and trying-too-hard. Watching Rio Bravo twenty times in a row pounces all over this faux-Shakespeare horse puckey. Good lookin' out to Milch for ending it. The season finale of Rescue Me is infinitely more important than this.

    Deadwood was quality programming-- -

    by dahauk

    - -- and will surely be missed. I don't know when they wrapped filming of this season, but it's interesting to see the actors from the show appearing on new shows now--Gale Harold who recently appeared as Wyatt Earp is starring in 'Vanished'(the first episode had the actor who played Steve the drunk, all shaved and cleaned up in a suit playing a diplomat we'll probably see more of in future episodes),Hearst is the Mayor in "jerico' sporting the full beard he grew during Deadwood (he gave a great, emotional plead for resident's calm in the 1st show). The HBO/Deadwood site used to have little video clips of interviews with the actors, but they seem to have removed them after the season three re-do. You really appreciate the powerful acting done when you see the players talking out of character, especially W.Earl Brown/Al's man Dan and Keone Young/ Mr.Wu--both these guys speak very proper and eloquantly and it's such a staggering difference to the people they play! I always knew AL/Ian McShane was british but had not seen him in anything but DW--his soliloquies-during-blowjobs were grand, macabre moments, giving us insight to his tortured childhood. He treats his employee Jewel (played by real life disabled actress Geri Jewel) protectively, but with his usual brash outward demeanor so no one will notice his favoring her. So many great character actors in one production playing such interesting people, perhaps the best work of their careers, is something to be thankful we got this much of. Hopefully the last episode of the final regular season won't be too much of a cliffhanger,as I too fear it'll be years till they do the proposed followup movies--it'll be real hard to pull everybody back again to film them. First Carnivale now Deadwood.*SIGH*

An excellent show that died before its time -- it should've gotten at least one more season, or at least Milch & co. should've given notice earlier -- All of the Langrishe's troupe stuff, which could've been a nice segue into Season 4, now seems like filler. As for HBO, thank goodness for The Wire: now, with the passing of Deadwood, it's inarguably the best show on television. (For non-pay TV, I'll go with Battlestar, now that Arrested Development is also gone.)

There's some kickass interview with David Simon on aol somewhere (don't ask me for the link you'll have to find it, I read it at work the other day) about the Wire. He says they wanted to also make a Wire series about Carcetti and City Hall, to kind of interweave in with The Wire. HBO killed it. I guess in favor of something like that fucking retarded detective surfer bullshit we are going to get next year. He also is pretty clear that he wants to do a 5th season of the Wire, to finish it right, but that HBO is not sold on the idea yet, and S4 is some sort of audition for getting a 5th. Fucking HBO suits. We need a modern day Swearingen to fucking deal some earthy wisdom to them.

Toliver is completely fucking bonkers now. Shanks the dopefiend then almost blows that girl's brains out when he realizes he can't do in Hearst. This episode did show that Al is still a cutthroat and not as soft as people thought he was, although he did display his fondness of Trixie by the virtue of the fact he never even had her head on the chopping block. As for the final 2 "movies", I'm not sure how deep Milch will go DW's history. I imagine movie 1 will revolve around Hearst's interests taking over the camp and the goldmine and all the crap that starts to go down. Movie 2 will involve DW going up in flames. That was the planned season 4 arc I believe. I doubt he will show Bullock meeting Roosevelt or Al's date with a train in Chicago.

I'm really sad to know that the final season is over. Goddamn the fact that I don't have HBO; I have not been able to follow the show in real-time. I've had to immerse myself in the DVDs while the current season played out. I've tried to avoid spoilers but I already know this season was stellar. I'm just glad to know that they intend to conclude the show with the 2-hour movies. As a microcosmic-Western that plays more like an epic Greek tragedy, "Deadwood" truly is one of the best shows I've ever seen. And we should all be thankful that it has brought us the one-and-only, Al Swearengen. Huzzah my fellow cocksuckers. Huzzah!

well made show ... bring on The Wire S4

    by emu47

Hearst was one hate-able badguy. That ending pained me. I really wanted to see him fed to Wu's pigs. I am hoping that some of the theater stuff pays off in the films, because that right now looks like a gargantuan waste of screen time. But overall, I loved this season of Deadwood. A very sad season, to be sure, but so powerful. That said, I'm a Wire junkie and can't wait for Season 4. And I don't blame HBO for a thing. They didn't cancel Deadwood, and they have given us lots of brilliant epic television. No other network holds a candle to HBO's top-shelf shows. Deadwood, The Wire, The Sopranos, Rome, SFU, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Carnivale ... the list goes on, and I'm sure they'll be more great shows to come. For now, I'm giving Milch the benefit of the doubt on his surfer noir thing. It could be cool. Don't knock it till you've seen it, and I for one am grateful enough to have seen what I've seen to still be there to see some more.

    Deadwood: Rest In Peace

    by -guyinthebackrow

It went out with a whimper, I am sad to say. Will we ever see the two "movies"? Maybe. Probably not. None of the actors are under contract, and the executive producer has a new show to work on. I hope we do get to see the "Deadwood" movies, but I'm guessing this will just go down as yet another fine show that was never able to end.

    McRaney

    by phimseto

I second (or third or fourth) the call for his Emmy. When "Deadwood" first aired, people said Swearengen would go down as one of the great TV badguys. McRaney's George Hearst not only outdoes Swearengen, he makes Swearengen seem positively heroic by comparison. Not only that, he gets his way completely in the end. I really wish this show had its fourth season. You can see how it was all building toward the great firey finale of the town burning down. My advice to HBO - re-fucking-consider your decision.

HBO really does suck cock by choice. And I too have a bad feeling that these movies wrapping it up will not get made. A little disappointed like some of you of the lack of fireworks bewtween the two assembling "armies." If that war gets made into a movie I will forgive HBO for cancewlling my favorite show ever. That was cold shit with Leon getting stabbed in the leg by Tolliver who has clearly gone insane. And that was a great last line by "Swedgin." Man I'm depressed this show is over. fuckin Morgan Earp is John the Surfer...

    by chickychow

in Milch's new show. to rant a little, what exactly was the point of Wyatt and Morgan's small arc? was it simply namedropping? did they even ever actually show up in the real Deadwood? just seemed like a pointless distraction to me. simalarly, Odell, Aunt Lou's son, was also a strange subplot that led nowhere in particular, tho i enjoyd his brief stint. I'm not saying Deadwood can't go off on tangents, every show does, but these are the first instances I can recall where Deadwood just sort've introduced characters for no good reason - they were almost approached as star-driven cameos, which of course considering the actors, they weren't... I guess Jack Langrishe takes the cake. I must admit to being quite disappointed after much fanfare concerning Brian Cox's joining the cast. I think Milch and co. after presenting such a larger than life personality, had nowhere to go with him.. what the hell's with his theater troupe? what kind've play were they planning on putting on? how much fun would it have been to actually See them perform in front of all variety of hoopleheads and cutthroats and the like.. while wonderful t.v. through and through, this season came off a tad unfocused. For this show's previous standars, anyway. (cant sing the praises of Mcraney's Hearst enough tho, he was fan-fuckin-tastic)

    Sub Subplots

    by alientoast

I do agree that this season, more then others, had far too many subplots that seemed to go nowhere or didn't deliver. The Theatre Troupe were probably the most notable. I thought they might work up the Jack/Hearst connection a bit more then they did. That subplot seemed the most boring to me. Cy was given much to do this season...he started out as Hearst's bitch, then he sort of got stuck by the sidelines and went batshit crazy. The whole Ms. Stubbs/Jane plotline didn't seem to resolve much except for the fact they seem to be attracted physically. The subplots I did like were the Steve the Drunk ones (including his karmatic veggie state) and the O'dell one. I think the O'Dell one was important because I got the distinct impression Hearst had a hand in his murder and served to build up the evilness of Mr. George.

    DEADWOOD defined smart television

    by brezzel

The DEADWOOD finale ended as it should have. The show is a huge metaphor for America. Corporate interests beat the little guy each and every time. WalMart displaces local businesses, McDonalds beats up the diner. DEADWOOD was great because it was real. The show could not have ended any other way. Big thanks to David Milch for creating one of the greatest series television has ever seen. And it's nice to (really) see a brilliant show end before it lapsed into mediocrity (ala X-FILES, ALIAS, SEINFELD, etc.). I look forward to the films, whenever they may come.

I mean, after Dorrity offed Captain Turner, what was stopping them from taking Hearst out? A sense of the law? A sense that he was tied to a bigger bunch of shitbirds that would've given a shit? Why Does JEFFREY JONES Still Work As an Actor?

    by deandome

I haven't watched a lotta Deadwood...YET. But it's weird...the other week I saw Ferris & wondered what happened to Principal Rooney since the big child porn/sex offender shit a few years ago...it was a CLASSIC mugshot! He plead no-contest, is now a registered sex-offender (and got popped for not registering somewhere, I think, last year), and I figured he'd be jacking off pervs in pickup trucks for pocket change by now. INSTEAD...I see him on Deadwood the other day where, obviously, he's enjoyed an ongoing role for SEVERAL years. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?? I'm for forgiveness and all, but how the fuck can anyone in Hollywood say SQUAT about Mel Gibson or anyone else when they're employing SEX OFFENDERS pretty much DURING the time (and RIGHT after) he cops to the charges??? I'm for forgiveness 'n all, but this is fucking obscene...he had child porn & was soliciting a 14 y.o. boy to pose for 'explicit' photos. What DO you have to do in Hollywood before people stop hiring you...rape & kill Dakota Fanning while wearing a Nazi uniform & expressing your love for GW Bush?? What's next...is OJ in a pilot for a mid-season replacement?

Hooplehead (Just wanted to say it one last time)

    by _maltheus_

Well another favorite show gone. I had no judgments for this season until now. It ended somewhat weak. Yes, I know they were constrained by history, but I'm going to review it as if it were fiction. So much seemed forced into this season that didn't serve the story. The theater troupe was the most obvious. That went nowhere and the only purpose seemed to be to give a tiny bit of story to Joannie and Jane. It made no sense in the beginning of the season and made even less sense by the end. .... The whole Wu mobilization went nowhere. Even if they couldn't kill Hearst, they could have done something with it. ........ I was expecting more of a story with Dan, after killing the general. ........ Al was weak and ineffectual all season, until the end. Killing that whore was one of the more evil things he's ever done (on the show), especially considering how suicidal and useless Trixie was. What does that buy her, another month? Even with Hearst leaving, she couldn't realistically continue to stay in town after that. ....... I'm not sure why Alma needed to sell her claim, she could have just left town and paid others to operate it. ....... O'Dell, what was the point of that storyline? ....... Is the doctor gonna live or die? Another fizzle. ...... Toliver seemed to have nothing to do this season 'cept act crazy. I don't know why anyone would risk working for that psycho. ...... So what did we learn from all of this? The more government you bring to a town, the worse things get. I think Milch actually intended the opposite message (judging from interviews), but Deadwood seemed a much better place to live in season 1 than 3. You can say the same about America now that we're in season 230. I don't have a problem with rich people, until you give them the power of government (ex. Pinkertons, rigged elections, etc). Too bad there are no places left where people can simply be left alone. ....... I guess I've come to the conclusion that it was the dialog that made this show. Milch is not too good with story, and most of the story here was lifted from history. So why would I watch his surf show? That's about a 180 on the dialog and I'll assume the story lines will fizzle there as well.

    One more abandoned (potential) storyline...

    by chickychow

happened in ep 2 and i had COMPLETELY forgotten about it until today. Fuckin Rev. Andy came back to the Bella Union to visit Cy and apologize after nearly murdering him. Cy wigs out, pulls out a piece, Andy leaves.. and.. nothing else. Why bother? If he's not going to appear again, at least have Cy kill him - get a jump start on that craziness... and I hardly noticed that Doc Cochran wasnt in the finale. he was severely underused this season - too bad because its an amazing performance and the character has so much going on with everyone else in town. all i really remember him doing this year is coughing alot and looking after Cy a couple times.. finally, good call, Evil Hobbit, on Hearst's Pubilishing. I liked the sly reference to it toward the end of the ep. im gonna watch it again tonight to see if it satisfies a little more, but all day today ive been filled with a fuckin incomplete feelin i can't hardly relate to you loopy cunts.

The most unique show ever on TV , no doubt about it. Ian Mcshane owned the role of AL like few others on any series have owned a role( Carol O'Conner as Archie Bunker and a few others possibly). I can't wait for the movies and trust me there will be movies as those movies turn into profitable DVD's costing the studio 1/3rd as much in production costs then a seasons worth of episodes but probably selling for 60 bucks or more a piece on DVD. ...is perhaps the greatest television character of all time. Early in season 1 Milch made you loathe him but as the show progressed I began to respect and even, at times, admire him. He's not a psycho like Cy, just a businessmen who kills when left with no choice. The fact that he saves Trixie by murdering that other hooker is both frightening and oddly touching. Al does have a heart it seems, however cold it may be. I'm going to miss my Deadwood friends...

I do agree that the show is certainly driven by the dialogue, but I wouldn't dismiss the story as "basically taken from history." Half of the characters in the show never existed (Tolliver, Ellsworth, Alma, Trixie,Doc Cochrane, Joanie Stubbs, etc), and others are given completely different histories (Hearst was a humanitarian and an overall gentle man, illiterate to boot; Bullock was never actually sheriff of Deadwood, but of Lawrence County, and never met Hickock). I'll say that Milch has taken pieces of history to build engaging hypothetical stories. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that season three's Hearst storyline was the best.

    by annoyyou

Not meaning to be terribly insulting or anything, but who knew Gerald McRaney had this character in him? He was practically the only thing that kept me engaged this season (this entire last season seemed lackluster and self-consciously "Shakespearean"). His Hearst, historically accurate or not, was a huge, hideous force of nature -- implacable, frightening, unknowable. A truly great performance, and if he's overlooked come Emmy/Golden Globe time next year, it will be a crime.

Anyway the more I think about it the more I liked that ending. Milch was able to loop his own plots into history's own narrative in a believable way. The scenes between Johnny and Al were fucking amazing, which is awesome because Johnny has been pretty one-note for 3 years. I think that having the huge gunfight though would have been taking it too far outside of history, something Milch has been fairly careful not to do up until this point.

    The BEST writing on television

    by brezzel

It's easy to criticize writing as sophisticated as DEADWOOD's, particularly if you don't understand what's happening. DEADWOOD requires viewers who are willing to engage in a narrative with literate characters who live in pretty dire circumstances. DEADWOOD was great because it had the balls to be the most intelligent program on television, even though some of its critics weren't up to the challenge.

    best dialogue maybe

    by emu47

but not the best writing. Just saying. I think Deadwood suffers from its desire to rev up the tension (see their portrayal of Hearst as an evil bastard when in fact he probably was really more ordinary than that) without the ability to pay it out. Far too many unresolved subplots, such as that bit with the firetruck, which makes no sense at all without the knowledge that Deadwood will eventually burn. Hopefully those films will come out soon and wrap all this crap up, but nothing is going to change the fact that Hearst was portrayed as far too evil for the actual historical account to contain. If he'd really been that bad, someone would've done him in.

Historical Accounts (Can I spoil myself now?)

    by _maltheus_

I guess I'm now gonna have to read the history (had been avoiding it for spoiler reasons), but I'd like to know how Al lost all of his money. I had read somewhere that he was making something like $10,000 a day at the Gem (which is close to a million a day now). Assuming that is correct, and he never seemed to spend it much, then where did it all go. ....... I was also under the false impression that Alma was real, and the liberties were only taken with the whores and thugs. It kind of makes me retroactively angry that Ellsworth was killed, yet Alma still signed her claim over to Hearst. When watching the finale, I thought that unrealistic, but I assumed they were trying to be true to history. ........ And to clarify, the problems I had with this season weren't the lack of a major gunfight (that'd be stupid). I just wanted them to wrap up (or do something with) the myriad of story lines introduced. I still really enjoyed it (more than the Sopranos this season), I just found it the weakest of the three. ......... Oh, and I agree with Brezzel. Seinfeld was worse than mediocre towards the end. I didn't laugh out loud on in the last two seasons (few moments in the finale I suppose). It was coasting on nothing but hype at that point and at the time, I didn't run into anyone who thought otherwise. It devolved into, "let's just say a bunch of funny sounding words until our time is up."

    A beautiful mess?

    by somerichs

Think i missed the forest for the trees on this final season. i enjoyed the hell out of it while i watched, and only after reading thru all these posts am i realizing just how many loose ends there were, and stories that seemed so great as i watched them but that really just fizzled out and went nowhere [i.e. the arrival of the Earps (did that really happen?), the theater troupe, Ant Lou and her son who was murdered, Cy Young's antics adding nothing to the show, drunk steve getting kciked into vegetability (actually, that was pretty satisfying)]. It was great television while i watched it, but a little unsatisfying now that it's all said and done and realizing that so many promising threads went nowhere and there's so much left unresolved. i do hope they pull off the 2 movies.

As for the new show, i'll give you three reasons why i will ABSOLUTELY give it a chance. (1)Milch's track record. Having been a diehard NYPD Blue fan first, and a diehard Deadwood fan second, I have no reason to believe he won't pull off another great show. (2) The source material. i don't know too much about the new show (if anyone can shed some light PLEASE DO SO!) except that it's at least loosely based on one or another of the books by Kem Nunn. AMAZING stuff. "Tapping the Source" was tremendous, and i'm halfway thru "The Dogs of Winter" and it's shaping up to be an even more satisfying read. if you haven't already, i highly recommend picking them up. i'll be curious to see how close the show is to one of these books or if he's just taking inspiration from them? (3) If the new show really is gonna star the guy who played Morgan Earp, i count that in the plus side. Small as his part was, he did a great job of it and has a very strong on-screen presence...

    That is all...

Other than Deadwood, some "can't miss" tv for me:

Rescue Me. Nip/Tuck. And Scrubs is frickin hilarious every week; and anyone who'd rather watch Grey's Anatomy oughta rent the movie GROSS Anatomy instead!

Okay, then I'll say that Seinfeld sucked the last THREE

    by herculesisapussy

Or more. Seinfeld was really only good for the second through fourth seasons. Around the time Kramer became an outright clown without the red nose the show went into the shitter.

Zeke you're right Gross Anatomy is a great 80's flick with our boy from Vision Quest. And Hercisapussy I would say that Kramer went from being a complete one note clown to a much more fleshed out character. But if you are saying that the stuff he got into with Neuman or Kramerica Industries isn't funny, then I don't even want to talk to you anymore

    Seinfeld

    by backrivercatfish

The last two seasons of Seinfeld were almost unwatchable at times, not coincidencently these were all after Larry David left. Go back and watch the episode where Jerry acts like a werewolf and tell me that wasn't a piece of crap.

    Jack Parsons

You don't get busted for simply having pictures of "cute teens." He paid a 14 year old boy to take explicit photos. In this country, we call that child porn. Also, I'm not sure how you connect Hearst and the Cold War. Unless you're saying that slanted journalism led to the Cold War. And if you're saying that, you're just a moron. Oh, and realize that journalism was slanted well before Fox came around. Of course, that media did, and still does, slant in a direction you approve of. which I guess makes it ok
