PRISON BREAK's Dominic Purcell As Banner In INCREDIBLE HULK?!?! Could Be...

Published at:  Aug 17, 2006 10:27:39 AM CDT

href="mailto:merrick@aintitcool.com">Merrick here...

Several folks have messaged us about this tidbit; we thought it might be worth passing on.

PRISON BREAK's Dominic Purcell was interviewed on Scott & Todd in the Morning (WPLJ in NYC) earlier today. In case you don't know what he looks like, here's a pic:

Hosts Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill dutifully cornered Dominic regarding rumors that he would play Bruce Banner in the forthcoming HULK sequel/reboot/whatever the hell it is.

Dominic's answer was decidedly dodgy and non-committal, although his pause and tone might imply a quite a bit.

HERE'S A CLIP OF DOMINIC'S REPLY!!!

Certainly nothing earth shattering, but intriguing (and a bit logical) all the same. What do you folks think?

Thanks to everyone who wrote in about this, with a special shout out to Fonzie for sending along the sound file!

Spider-Man didn't have any. F4 didn't (Alba's hot but can't open a movie yet). X-Men...sort of did if you were a Trekkie. Anyway, Steve Buscemi is more well known than this choad. I look at him and "scientific genius" doesn't come to mind as quickly as "where's my wallet?".

The recent remake made the Hulk way to big. Too extreme. No fucking way can he fly through the air that distance. The audience is already trying to swallow the fact that he turns into a giant monster. Keep it in bounds. But Jennifer Connelly as always is a total sweetheart.

    by big bad clone

It's on SciFi right now. Take a look, it is simply boring and ridiculous. I love the fact that they thought that "Bruce Banner" was too silly a name for the tv show yet they have Banner meet his criminal double, work as a roady for the worst rock act ever, and never did find a good use for the main premise of the show. The man becomes a fucking monster! Why the hell do we have to see him meet new lame characters each week? The comic may have problems from time to time but it was nowhere near as bad as the tv show.

...for a soft-spoken, skinny intellectual type. Which, last time I checked, was what Banner was supposed to be (you know...to contrast the rippling green mass of brainlessness that is the Hulk?). But whatever. Bana wasn't exactly a 98 lb weakling, But he seemed to have a lot of insecurity going on behind his eyes and that was enough to get me to suspend disbelief. This guy doesn't appear to have much going on beside the "oops, I forgot to shave...do you think it's sexy?" look. Buscemi would rule the role. Duchovny wouldn't be bad either.

    by timbenzedrine

It was Lou Ferrigno's pecs. I remember coming home from college in the eighties, only to find my mom glued to set. She'd say, "oh, I know it's a silly show, but there's something about it that just keeps me watching it." and I'd say, "Mom, You really have to get out more." I think if you checked that shows demographics, I think you'd find it had its biggest audience among kids and lonely middle aged women.

    by black satin 2

Here's what they got so perfectly in the Hulk pilot. When David got upset, it actually grew inside of him. He couldn't lift the gurney, it started to rain on him, his car got a flat, the crowbar bent on him. Wham! he just lost it. That was the transformation. Then Feringo was in the STATE of anger, tearing everything up around him. The Hulk was created from rage. You CAN'T have an actor look like he is already mad. It wouldnt make sense.

Ed Norton wouldn't go near this movie with a 100 foot pole. Okay, maybe if the studio paid him $15 Million or something. Otherwide, if you're as well known an actor in Norton's shoes with a quality rep, would you go near a sequel to a comic book based movie, of which the first movie did mediocre box-office, and its sequel is directed by some hack who directed the Underworld movies? If a studio executive made him that offer, Norton would laugh him out of the room.

    by wormie

Anyone who thinks the likes of Steve Buscemi or Steve Carell is right for the Banner part is way off-base. Check out the comics - Banner is more of a normal-looking guy than an out-and-out geek, which is why Bill Bixby and Eric Bana both suited the part. The main problem with the Spidey movies IMO is that Peter's geekiness is way overemphasised - he was only like that in the early Lee/Ditko comics, and he already left high school in the first film. As for the Hulk, I did like the movie, and going from Ang Lee and Eric Bana to some hack and (potentially) this no-mark is not very encouraging.

    by orbots commander

which is why the producers want to cast or have cast the dude from Prison Break. They're going cheap on this one. To do the Hulk sequel would Norton would demand a pay or play deal of somewhere around $15-$20 Million. Why? Because he knows that his name would lend instant credibility to the project. Who else's would? The guy who directed Underworld 2?

I think its bad casting cause I haven't really seen what he can do acting wise. He's fine in Prison Break but that part isn't exactly the biggest challenge. He played the bad guy in Blade III OK too, it's not like they wrote him some ingenius part. I just don't get all the bitching about him being "too hunky," Half of you act like they're casting a pro-wrestler-sized guy. What are you a bunch of primordial dwarves??? He's not that big.

Give Peter David the scripting duties (and who wouldn't want him also writing a *Doctor Who* episode?). I don't mind Purcell in the film; he did nerdy in John Doe well despite his uber physique. Although he'd make a better Superman than Banner. JeanLuc's suggestion of Zack Braff is awesome but I doubt he'd do it unless the script was a masterpiece. If Marvel didn't go El Cheapo with the property, perhaps they could get a collaboration between Peter David and Goyer to create the story, and then Shane Black to do the polished screenplay and directorial duties. Hmmm...Robert Downey Jr. as Banner.

ABOMINATION. Eric Bana is still contracted for another film and is apparently interested in returning as Banner/Hulk providing the script is good. I see no reason why Arad & crew wouldn't bring him back. Avi Arad and Zak Penn have stated on numerous occasions that Abomination would be the villain in The Incredible Hulk (aka Hulk 2). I'm almost positive that if Purcell is in talks for the film, it's for the role of Abomination, not Banner. That might explain his dodgy answer.

Yeah, the first Hulk sucked ass, but that had nothing to do with Bana. He made a great banner, and the scene at the end with him in the jungle facing off with the guerillas was AWESOME. If they make it more smash and less touchy feely emotional crap, I'll be first in line. And if you can't get Bana, at least go for someone who fits the role. what you want: an insipid, mindless parade of Hulk smashing cars, buildings, water towers, etc., which actually doesn't sound too bad even as I type it. But movies like this are like pigging out on Halloween candy. I really liked the Ang Lee Hulk (although, yes, the stretches between ass-kickings were too long, the CGI wasn't too hot, and the final battle was so dark as to be nearly invisible). Casting-wise, and tonally and emotionally, though, the movie was fantastic. The editing was unique and perfect. The dog scene was fun, as was the desert scrap with the tanks.

Anyway, you will never see some shiteating crap pieceofshitactor like Ahnuld or Sly filming some (ultimately) shit movie in Bristol. What the fuck is that about? The guy is a fucking legend, did nothing wrong, (okay, maybe Navy SEALS, but let's be honest, is that any worse than Cobra or Raw Deal), and still got fucked. I'm still angry i never met him in my brother's shop. Cause if I had, I would have invited him out and got completely fucked wih him. Because he's that cool. by immortal_fish

Michael Biehn would be perfect, if only he were younger. Whether or not he knew it, he was channeling Banner in T1. Banner ain't a wimp/geek. He's an introverted anal-retentive with a reluctant realist bent. An intellectual that rationalizes his way through shit with brutal honesty. Least common denominator, black and white, no grey persona. Unfortunately, Michael Biehn is too old, albeit perfect. Justin Long would be great too. He has that "Oh, shit!" urgency about him that would be perfect for Banner, but he's too young (and a bit inexperienced). As for hollywood A-listers, I hear the Edward Norton camp, yet lean much more toward Ewan McGregor. But that's pie in the sky since no A-lister will touch this property. My #1 pick for Banner is the 40-year old virgin himself Steve Carell. Firstly, he's of average build and somewhat resembles Bill Bixby. And I am amazed at this man's ability to float between ignorant prick and naive dullard. If he can find some way of incorporating both personas into one, he'd be a spot-on Banner.

for mentioning Alexis Denisof. What a great idea! He'd be perfect as Banner!!! You see, the idea that Bruce Banner can kick your ass is not a good one. You need someone who conveys wimpy. Denisof is a perfect choice. He's a great actor with the perfect physical type. Fits it to a T. Eric Bana, he could conceivably kick your ass. Dominic Purcell could most assuredly kick your ass. Alexis Denisof could NOT kick your ass, which is why Wes went around with twin .45's and a Mossberg pump. And Louis Letterier also directed UNLEASHED, which was one of the best films of last year. Oh, and the fucknut who dissed Julian McMahon... the only well-cast role of that whole fiasco (but with the shittiest role)... you obviously have never seen a single episode of Nip/Tuck. CHRISTIAN TROY OWNS YOUR ASS. It's scripture. So it is written, so shall it be done.

At this time it is all conjecture

Eric Bana ruled. It was all Ang Lee's fault.

    by r.c. the "wise"

That Muthafucker didn't even read ONE Hulk comic for he had his own "vision" in mind.

Hardly anyone has said they hate Bana

    by messi

To the guy up there saying that everyone hated Ang Lee and bana. wrong. most people here liked bana. Bana himself is ok with coming back.

So Bruce Banner is now officially an Australian role?

    by regicidal_maniac

Cool. Maybe in Hulk 3 Banner can be played by Yahoo Serious or Shaun Micallef or Noah Taylor (actually Noah Taylor would be a great choice.) If this has action and excitement, the only reasons why ANYONE should want to see The Hulk on the bigscreen, then it'll shit all over the first one. Just a shame they couldn't work things out with Bana
