Curious About PAN'S LABYRINTH?! Check Out Frank Darabont's Non-Review Review!!

Published at:  Aug 16, 2006 12:05:51 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I don’t think you can call what Frank Darabont wrote a “review” in a typical sense, but a few days ago, Del Toro Films ran a letter from Frank in which he practically preaches about how great PAN’S LABYRINTH is.

And he’s right. I was at that screening, and I can vouch for the ecstatic reaction from everyone in the room, whether it was Jeff Goldblum or Randy Cook or Clive Barker or Nicolas Cage or Nick Nunziata or Mr. Beaks. There couldn’t have been more than 40 of us there that night, but the reaction when the closing credits began was as big and as impassioned as any standing ovation Cannes has ever experienced.

PAN’S is on the very short list of the best films I’ve seen this year so far, right up there with BABEL and THE FOUNTAIN, and I think it’s going to cement Guillermo’s reputation as the best filmmaker working in fantasy right now. It’s not a horror film, although it’s got its fair share of dark material in it, and it’s not like any fairy tale that I’ve ever seen on film, but it feels like a story that’s been handed down and polished over time.

I’ll have more to say about the film closer to release, but for now, check out that link above and see how much the film affected Frank. It’s a pretty moving testimonial, one filmmaker inspired by another.

"Moriarty" out.

How similar is it to Devil's Backbone?

    by the funketeer

I've heard it takes place around the same time. Are the two related in anyway or does he just like that time period? I loved Hellboy and Blade 2, hell I even kind of liked Mimic, but Devil's Backbone is my favorite of his films.

I like the way Darabont says it's not a review, then writes it exactly the way reviews *should* be written. I'm sold. If the director of my favouritest film ever gives this sort of praise, I can't get to the cinema fast enough. Or the screening I'll be attending in three weeks... :)

true, this guy has a seemingly endless supply of credibility because of his body of work. but his non-review and his unabashed plea for moviegoers to check this out were both well written and well argued. double plus! I'm seeing it...and Latauro, I really am not gay for you, all evidence to the contrary, I just like your reviews and end up posting even in other talkbacks at the same time as you, due to the time difference and my sporadic sleep schedule...also, I wanna be on you...wait, wait, wait!! pointing out that you were in a room with celebrities doesn't stop YOU from being an enormous tool. i know you tried to tie it in and make it seem relevant, but it wasn't. you want people to think you're cool because you saw nicolas cage in person. too bad that a.) nicolas cage is one-note douche-bag and b.) he's never going to have sex with you. find a new point to your life, moriarity.

by logical extension...who is the bigger loser: the reviewer who mentions celebrities that he saw a film with (a private showing, at that), or the guy who berates him for it, as a sad form of ego-masturbation...I vote B!! leave the AICN staff alone, jackoff. go back to masturbating to Red Dwarf reruns...or getting off to your own snappy talkback comebacks...speaking of which, I smell a turd getting ready to drop...let's have it, clique! tick tock tick tock...

Don't diss Peter Jackson like that

    by exie

Mori -- I'm usually with you 100%, but to call Del Toro whose films have been borderline unwatchable at times "the best filmmaker working in fantasy right now" is a major slap to Peter Jackson who is high at the top of that ladder. I don't care if Jackson isn't making a fantasy film right now -- he holds that mantle by leaps and bounds and this site's unabashed praise for all things Del Toro can in some ways suggest a credibility issue.

I've seen every Del Toro film because I am a fan of this site and you guys get people all stoked for his movies and all of them have been "meh" for me.

And I love me some fantasy, horror, sci fi, etc.

    by googamooga

I'm not lazy, I've read quite a few good movies in my day, but when it comes to a movie like this, where the visuals are a LARGE part of the experience, I'd rather be WATCHING the movie than reading it and possibly missing something cool happening on screen.

Cloud Atlas- reading at the movies

    by koosbane

Yet another hoity-toity film snob who thinks that wanting to watch a film instead of reading it, is a crime. You do realize that there is a better medium for reading than film don't you? They're called books. Don't tell you that you get bent out of shape when there are no pictures in your books too. Now I know you might be able to multi-task, but I for one can't read the dialog, appreciate the sublte nuances of a language I don't speak and take in the physical performances, the sets or costumes at the same time.

I know what you're saying, but I guess that means that people like you will just have to go see it twice. Once for the story/plot/whatever, and once to really soak in the visuals. Hey, it's 4 hours and 16 bucks vs. 2 hours and 8 bucks. No big deal.

    by chickychow

featuring little puppies and kittens and retarded 7 year olds getting all sorts of implements shoved in their peeholes, AICN would still tell us its the best movie since whatever Eli Roth or Robert Rodriguez directed last. If he directed You Me and Dupree it would get about 80 planted positive reviews.

    Subtitles

    by cloud atlas

Thank God, I CAN "read the dialog, appreciate the subtle nuances of a language I don't speak and take in the physical performances, the sets or costumes at the same time".
It's not that hard. Trust me. You should try (you can practice with good non-English films on DVD).
So, I won't have to watch it twice (well, if it's that good, I will anyway: not to "understand it", but to enjoy it again and again).
But don't worry, if it's a bit sucessful, you'll have a dubbed version or, if you're really lycky, your regular "crappy American remake of a recent foreign film made for people who can't read subtitles", just like Vanilla Sky, Criminal, The Vanishing and (possibly) The Departed...

And if you think one loses stuff when reading the subtitles, I say you lose even more by not listening to the original audio of the film.

Why are you being such a dick about subtitles? For the record, I'm with you--I'd much rather read subtitles than hear the actor's performance dubbed over. Some of my favorite films are subtitled ("The 400 Blows," "Breathless," "Ikiru"), but your ridiculous innuendos make you come off like a petty, self-important prick. Are you aware of that? (And, for the record, "Vanilla Sky" is superior to "Abre los Ojos" in every way. It's a far more layered and complex film.)

I know that Cloud comes off as a pompous ass, but seriously, Vanilla Sky better than Abre Los Ojos? yikes. that is a travesty and I hope you're joking. cameron crowe made Vanilla with Tom "I pray to aliens" Cruise like, what, 3 years after the original? it was just a cash cow. it had nothing original to say, except for a few album cover references. it was a rip-off, and it made me mad. the original was great, why remake it with white people in English except to cash in on a good idea? fricking bullshit.

    Bullshit

    by batcountry

Crowe's Vanilla Sky is one of my favorite movies and I don't care what anyone says. Of course I never saw the orginal, but I digress. I also agree about subtitles taking away from a film, especially if it is touted as being very visual. It wouldn't stop me from watching it by any means, but it is a little frustraing to have to read at the bottom of the screen while some kick-ass creature is doing its business. With that said, I could care less if that is the case with Pan's because I have been dying to see it since day one.

    by flickerhead

I disagree--I found "Abre los Ojos" far easier to comprehend than "Vanilla Sky." Don't get me wrong, "Abre" is a great flick. I saw it, enjoyed it, and recommended it to friends. But about a year later, I saw "Vanilla Sky," and that flick haunted me. I watched it again... then again... and found new layers of conflict with every viewing. IMO, the characters in "Vanilla Sky" are more fully realized than in the original, the dialogue is more poignant, and of course it's shot better (I don't think anybody will argue *that* point). Finally, Crowe wrote out the ridiculous gunplay, which was the only thing that really bugged me in "Abre." It was too over-the-top, too cliched. The weakest part of VS is Cameron Diaz, but fortunately she's not in it much. Tom Cruise gives the best performance of his career, easily, and Jason Lee manages to play charming, pathetic and noble all at once. Man, I'm gonna watch that movie tonight. :^)

    by machinaman

I can't wait to see this one. You can see glimpses of brilliance in most of the films that Guillermo del Toro does, but those films tended to be accompanied (for better or for worse) by a very current 'modern' sensibility (though I personally don't include The Devil's Backbone in that perspective).

Guillermo del Toro is an artist, and I for one will not wait till the DVD to see Pan's Labyrinth (and will even harass friends and enemies to see it as well).
