The Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow - wish I was there...

Published at:  Aug 10, 2006 10:22:48 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... here in Austin. I'm having a great time here, but there's a part of me that misses being on the road with my Dad and nephew traveling the country on the pure love of cinema. Last year's Rolling Roadshow by Tim League and his mighty Roadshow crew - the cream of the Drafthouse Team... Traveling from Austin to Austin with nearly 8000 miles between the destinations.

Each one of the screenings started off with the inflating of the screen... like this:

That was at Devil's Tower prior to the screening of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. It was kinda fucking amazing. Stunning. The type of magic you just don't get to experience. The purity of a silver screen sprouting from the earth that Teddy Roosevelt set aside and preserved as our first National Monument and that Spielberg burned into our collective consciousness. Tim's use of Thus Spake Zarathustra for the inflating of our monolith unmarred by anything but for the dying embers of the light.

It's a shame that Netflix in their sponsorship of Tim League's Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Roadshow - that they've gone the crass route of defacing the magic of the screen with their gaudy corporate logo. Construct a gigantic tent towards the back of the crowd next to the projection truck. That said - the showmanship of Tim League and his Roadshow Crew is still evident. Take a look at this YouTube of The Warriors screening in Coney Island...

Then there's these two from the Kevin Smith / New Jersey / CLERKS screening!!!

It's the same old Rolling Roadshow - fantastic entertainments in fantastic locales... If you can get there - get there. And if the Netflix logos and pushiness get to ya - just let it go. If it wasn't for that sponsorship this year - there'd be no Rolling Roadshow. Still - don't put it on the screen. Not the screen.

Tonight in Chicago - it's FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, Tomorrow in the Field of Dreams is the screening of FIELD OF DREAMS - with Costner there... singing: Click here for info! Then on the 16th - it's THE SHINING here, then it's out to Monument Valley for THE SEARCHERS - that's the screening I absolutely hate missing. Then you head off for RAISING ARIZONA. Then the Drafthouse and the Rolling Roadshow board the Queen Mary to watch the original POSEIDON ADVENTURE. Then... for the final stop - it's on that cold fog enshrouded island in San Francisco Bay.... on the isle know as the Rock... Alcatraz for the amazing screening of ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ!

If you go - and you tape some of it - put it up on YouTube so folks can share it. Especially folks like me that miss the road and the show.

What is the orgin of "too soon"

    by #1 zero

Is the origin of "too soon" from that fan's reaction to "United 93" in New York? If so then that joke would have been funny to things back in April when United 93 came out, not 4 months later. Yeah, the first time I saw it on here was funny when it was applied to an absurd idea but when it is used in every talkback and not in that context it is wore. I agree with Westonian.

I just wish NetFlix was giving more credit to Tim...

    by robogeek.com

...and the Alamo Drafthouse -- names that have been woefully absent from the promo material and press I've seen for this year's tour thus far. ALL HAIL TIM LEAGUE! Hero to geeks everywhere. His name should be shouted from the mountain tops - esp. in Monument Valley.

    Costner is most definently SINGING.

    by clonetrooper

His band is going to be playing a brief set before the movie starts. Will it be horrible? Probably. Will I be there anyway? Definently.

is one of my favorite movies, I wish I had known about this in advance I so would have driven to see it. Is anyone going to be at the Shining one in CO, I'm thinking about driving the hours to get there, sounds like a one of kind expirence. Although what happens when AICNers unite, do the heavens rend, thunder and lightening strike, heads explode

Kevin Smith must get terribly hot in the summer.

All that fat, the long sleeves, the polyesther bowling shirts, the dark colors that absorb heat.

The Searchers in Monument Valley would be cool.

    by barry egan

With the ghost of John Ford staring down with his one good eye. The Searchers is one of my favorite films of all time. There is another talkback bashing the younger readers of this site. If you've never seen The Searchers kids, watch it!!

    by dmann

From the FIELD OF DREAMS event. From what i see above, it looks like there were more people at it than the Warriors. It was insane, between 4,000 and 5,000 people. Kudos to tim and the whole Roadshow crew.
