FIREFLY!! GALAXINA!! AMERICAN PSYCHO!! FIRST BLOOD!! Herc's HDTV Cellar!!

I am – Hercules!!

SED Said To Be In the Wings?
Still wondering to go Cathode, Plasma or LCD for your first or next HD set? Tvweek.com has an interesting piece about a fourth choice, something called SED (or surface-conduction electron-emitter display) that avoids the pitfalls of these other technologies. Read more of this here.

Shiny!! ‘Firefly’ To UHD!! Still no word on when we’re getting our first HD season-set or how much it’ll cost. Will Fox charge $150 per season (like it did when it first offered a season of “The X-files” on DVD six years ago) or more like $25 per season (as it has for “X-Files” much more recently)?

While we wait for our favorite series (or at least the ones shot on 35mm – sorry, “Jeffersons” and “Barney Miller” fans!) to be issued in 1080p, Tvweek.com reveals that every episode of Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” is being remastered to 1080i and will start broadcasting on the Universal HD channel starting Sept. 24.

There is a tiny bit of symmetry to this, since “Firefly’s” big-screen sequel, “Serenity” was the first-ever movie to be issued in HD-DVD.

Where’s The Porn?? Doesn’t everybody say porn drives every new format? Well, if I’m not mistaken, the only thing HBO and Showtime WON’T give us in HD are Mistae Munday and the rest of those nakedly cavorting late-night splooge-fests!

Same with HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Both formats have been around for months now, but the closest thing we get to spermatozoa-bait is Halle Berry in “Swordfish” and Phoebe Cates in “Fast Times”?

With muted enthusiasm I note that the late Star 80 Dorothy Stratten’s Galaxina (1980) is finally due to squeeze onto shelves Sept. 12. Let’s hope the better porn – perhaps a production or two younger than a quarter-century - lurks right behind it. If you know what I mean.

Herc’s HD Pic of the Week!!

Learn that black and white movies look just as spectacular as the color ones in HD!! Good Night and Good Luck, the tale of Murrow vs. McCarthy, pulled down six Oscar nominations. More importantly, it pulled down 95 percent positive reviews on rottentomatoes.com.

Is it really that hard to design a dvd cover???

    by shermdawg

That Silent Hill cover is terrible. Yeah, the movie wasn't great, but it deserves a better than that. I think HERC puts these up just as an example that an art/marketing degree, doesn't equal talent, or good taste. And don't even get me started on the Jessica Alba one, or RV. JESUS H. CHRIST! Who approves these shitty designs? I don't care how badly the film might have tanked, or how shitty it may be, they should at least take a few extra hours in photoshop and make these fuckers look good. But noooo... And why aren't the fanmade custom covers more popular?

dunno where Herc is looking, but I'm seeing HD-porn

    by crayotic

adultdvdempire even has a genre for it. Also these new format discs with all the self-pimping on them annoy me. "The look and sound of perfect"? "experience high definition"? Experience my balls. People who claim first annoy me too.

    HD porn...

    by 24200124

... has been around for a while. There are a few productions and studios that are releasing two-disc sets of these flicks - Digital Playground has released a few of these. Why do I know this? There's just something to be said about HD porn...

But, there hasn't been a LOT of HD porn.

    by mattcg

That's for sure. I think that the sppoge industry is waiting to see which format will win out. Anyone still under the impression it's Blu-Ray is a sad motherfucker.

    HD porn yeah!

    by redshirt

I can't wait to see the covered up pimples, the dimpled thighs, the crooked teeth, the hidden signs of meth use, maybe even tracks on the arms! Yeah, HD is going to wash a lot of people out of the business. It aint just porn. Seen Cameron Diaz in High def? definitely some texture problems on the face. Guys, this aint gonna be that exciting...

The Reasoning Behind Bad DVD Covers

    by froduss

Ok, here it is from the horses mouth. The reason why DVD covers suck, is not the artist's fault, but it is an order by the one above the artist. Trust me, I'm sure the original proofs either mirrored the original one-sheet or were quite inspired.

DVD covers, like the way one-sheet posters used to be like in the "old days" rely on hoping to attract a buyers attention and sell them the movie in a quick glance since a lot of people decide their purchase at the store. Yes, most people out there don't know what is hitting shelves ahead of time. With the exception of DVDs catering to a niche market (Criterion Collection, etc), DVD covers rely on an actor's face, violence, sex, etc. Not art.

Oh, and it isn't attributed either to the fact that European designers are better (something that has been mentioned many times before). It is because consumer audiences here just can't handle cool aesthetics.

    I have HD porn...

    by frank black

...its called sex in real life! No, seriously many of the companies (such as Digital Playground) are releasing HD Shot movies (I think Pirates is in HD.) I also think AICN needs a porn section but until then you can read ours over at www.mondopopsickle.com (http://www.mondopopsickle.com/mondopopsickle/MondoErotica.htm) The site is under construction but you should find something useful there at our little amateur happy hour. HD vs BluRay? It sure is tempting to re-purchase all of my favorite movies (ov er 5,000 DVDs) in a brand new format, (considering that I've bought many of them in multiple editions already) but I think I will wait for DVDs in their current format to become obsolete.

Usually I'm an early adopter, but I'm holding out...

    by lynxpro

I will hold out until Sony and the rest of the Blu-Ray Disc Association decides to release their titles in H.264. Not the current MPEG2 madness, and certainly not Microsoft's VC-1. Its H.264 or nothing. And only Blu-Ray will do it (eventually) because HD-DVD has to appease Microsoft to survive and they will deliberately pull support if the HD-DVD camp starts favoring H.264 on their title releases. Besides, once the Blu-Ray titles improve to their potential quality, HD-DVD is dead, just as LaserDisc wiped out the RCA SelectaVision CED discs once Pioneer worked out the kinks to LD. HD-DVD will be looked upon in passing as a curiousity like CDi or CD+G.

    Custom DVD covers

    by timgonmad

Yeah, some of the artwork for DVDs is pretty sucky. I have done a few custom covers of my own, but have yet to discover a place where others share their work. I've found a few, but the resolution is crap. Any suggestions from the peanut gallery on where to locate fan-made dvd covers?

Know who stars in Young Guns, according to Amazon.com?

    by llghtst0rmer

Lisa Banes, Geoffrey Blake, Alice Carter, Victor Izay and Brian Keith. I clicked Herc's link to the Amazon page, and that's who they say headlined the flick. Did they not watch the first part of the credits that mention people like, I dunno... Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney, or Casey Siemaszko? Hell, they couldn't even look at the DVD box? It has 'em all listed right there! How do you think I found out how to spell Siemaszko, fer chrissakes? Or do you think Amazon's just trying to get a piece of the ever-hot marketing machine that is Geoffrey Blake? Anyway, I hope they at least use a better master for the Blu-Ray discs, and not the crappy master they made the SE DVD discs with. You'd think something was wrong with your Blu-Ray player if you saw that junk.

    Keep the H.364 faith, Lynxpro!

    by half vader

I'm with you brother. Poopflinger (I keep wanting to say Poopfinger which sounds like a HD porn spoof title if ever I heard one) you're damn right about the shitty selection (with a scant few exceptions). Who was that studio that was saying they purposely weren't releasing their big guns because they couldn't justify the spend on HD? Don't they KNOW it's a chicken-and-egg scenario? If they don't do the huge recent stuff and classic back catalogue stuff how on Earth are they going to get enough early adopters to kick the format off and MAKE that sort of money? I know I know. Preaching to the converted. I'm just dwelling on it because I just can't fathom why they all think we're a bunch of Jennifer Anniston and middle-of-the-road-movie fans. It's not like they have any qualms about double-dipping and remastering down the line.
