Ain't It Cool News (

Ben Sinister Has Read The New FUTURAMA 'Movie'!!

I am – Hercules!!

The 13 new episodes of “Futurama” hit Comedy Central in 2008, but Ben Sinister has already read the first four, and calls it a tearjerker! No mention of the HypnoToad:

So I read the script for the new Futurama episodes / DVD movie. I'll go against Ain't It Cool Tradition, skip five painful and pointless paragraphs that no one cares about, and just cut to the chase.

The script, "Bender's Big Score," is a DVD movie divided into four broadcastable episodes. I don't know how well each episode stands on its own as a self-contained piece of Futurama, but as an arc, the story is delightful and truly epic in scope.

As for the story, it comes from Ken Keeler and David Cohen, and it's very very big. Basically, "Planet Express" undergoes a hostile takeover and its new new owners make use of Bender for some criminal schenanigans. What follows is... a very big plot. Which I don't want to ruin. Because it's a lot of fun, very surprising, and something fans should wait for. Making return visits are: the Nibblonians, Seymour, Barbados Slim, Morbo, Santa Bot, the "God" space entity (probably not for the last time), Al Gore, and yes, sexlexia sufferer Zapp Brannigan (although all too briefly). Not to mention space battles, songs, and even a little time travel.

By episode's end, the world of Futurama is left more or less unchanged, and intact for the next three movies (and beyond?). The real development in these episodes is the elaboration of the mythology of the series. Questions you've asked, and haven't asked, are answered. The movie resembles many fan favorite episodes in terms of structure. There's a lot of similarities to "The Why of Fry," "Time Keeps on Slipping," and "The Luck of the Fryish" as well as "Jurrasic Bark," and more loosely, "The Farnsworth Paradox." Fry / Leela fans have plenty to chew on, and if that romance has ever elicited a tear or two, well, grab a hanky, it may do so again.

I'm sure someone's going to criticize these episodes as derivative of past glories. To that person, I say fuck you. All the great Futurama episodes resemble each other in some ways - great sacrifices are made, love goes unrequited, and past and present intersect in unexpected and touching ways. "Bender's Big Score" delivers on all of that, with fresh material and some hilarious jokes. Seriously, I don't laugh a lot when I read scripts, and I laughed a lot reading this.

I don't think these episodes / this movie will be super accessible to anyone new to the series. While it does a very patient and clever job of re-introducing us to the characters and universe, it quickly slips into continuity porn, which will delight some and confuse others. I know for one I can't wait to see this baby hit Comedy Central, and I suspect nary a Futurama fan will be disappointed.

If you use this, call me Ben Sinister.

CAN. NOT. WAIT. I've got high hopes and knowing the Keeler and Cohen have wrote it keeps those hopes high! I hope they cram in a good lot of the great CGI they did - nice stuff! and please: lots of Zoidberg! One of my favourite TV characters ever!

    by CellarDoor

Huzzah for Futurama! Those four seasons are holding up to repeat viewing very nicely but that doesn't retard my desire for more. The plot-heavy episodes are amongst the more enjoyable ones so I think i'll have fun with this. More of the Zapper would be nice though.

I tried as hard as could to like futurama but for some reason as a show it never clicked with me. Obviously it is vastly different to the simpsons. Maybe it is one of those shows that takes multiple viewings or something or maybe it isnt meant to be comedic and that there is a much more serious tone to something. Skyone dont show Futurama anymore and after fox dumped it. who, here, from the UK thinks that Skyone should bring back futurama?

    by Pez_Pirate

Futurama....The Show That DOES NOT Endorse The COOL CRIME OF ROBBERY !!!! I cant wait to see Bender getting his three finger discount on all over the place.... Futurama is some of the best written satire ever. Further, if you havent given them a listen, the Commentary Tracks on the DVDs are just as funny the episodes sometimes.... Oh, I would love for them to do an episode where Morbo's people finally make it and take over, but he gets pissed because it ruins his TV gig.... so he helps kick his people off the planet, possibly with the help of Calculon and alot of the other the non Human characters. Im also hoping when the series returns, we'll see Tales of Interest return.... because once you've watched it, YOU CANT UNWATCH IT !!!!

Try harder. You're not alone - I fell in love with Futurama from the first episode, but I know a bunch of folk who totally didn't 'get' it until they saw it in syndication. Then it clicked. Futurama is layered. Like a sexy cake made of aliens and robots. Can't wait for its return.

I don't post here most of the time despite having a lot I'd like to add to threads. I am going to post here though because I am personally excited to see Futurama come back. There has never been a cartoon that made me cry before this show. The episode where Fry finds his dog just turned on the waterworks for me. Give me more of that and the big belly laughs and I am there!

    by MrBoinfoint

Everyone I've ever encourage to see this show--even those who I've had to tie down and force their eyelids open-- have ended up loving it. Most (but not all) will even admit that it's better than the Simpsons. Surely it hit the ground running and as a season-by-season comparison, it's entire run is more tightly focused and enjoyable. I think it's just not for idiots. That said, I think Cartoon Network might face a precipitous drop in viewership when this starts airing on Comedy Central. Aside from Venture Brothers, none of the new CN shows have any promise. The only drawback is there will be eight hundred commercials for Futurama in between every other show on Comedy Central, and they will show back-to-back episodes sandwiched between a Mind Of Mencia Racism-A-Thon.

    Can't Wait

    by sambrook

I've always loved the way Futurama's managed to have a mythology and ongoing arc without the casual viewers even noticing it. Four of my favourite episodes are mentioned as comparisons to this one (Time Keeps On Slippin' and The Luck of the Fryrish tie for top spot) so consider me even more excited than I was before. Which was a lot. And by 2008 they'd better mean January 1st, at 00:01.

Futurama never clicked with me while it was on Fox. Then I started watching the reruns and it TOTALLY clicked. Honestly, it holds up to repeat viewing FAR better than any other animated series currently on TV. The way it melds humor with plots and characters you actually care about it BRILLIANT. The "movie" can't come out soon enough. Plus please...more Zapp! "I've never heard of such a brutal and shocking injustice that I cared so little about."

NO damn cameos from supposed "celebrities" in this one!

    by JackPumpkinhead

The WORST part of Futurama were the idiotic "cameos" from some supposed 20th century "celebrities" - these moments are so horribly stupid and annoying...! Who the hell will know what some washed up past actor's head is supposed to mean in 5 years? In fact, who does now? "Paulie Sure" (i.e. the 20th century guy who stole Fry's girlfriend - the first time I heard that name in my life was on that episode of Futurama)? "Lucy Lu"? "Pamela Anderson"? Who the hell are these critters? Are they even still alive (and does anyone care - NO)???

it states that fox hated the show. it was way to too dark and as a viewer at the start, when Fry wanders into the Suicide booth mistaking it for phone booth to call his only living relative the professor in the scene where he meets bender for the first time is very dark as is the scene with the guy being eaten by HG Blob . Who else find the commentary by Groening and co. annoying. for the record I love the character Ziff, i am ziodberg fan. BTW I want to point out. Sky one Showed this series and binned it, this was after fox had announced the series was canceled. They havent shown it since, only in brief re-runs, which channel 4 bought. So in the UK/we are long way behind You and we dont get the sci-fi channel.

And it's not FRIENDS! It's THINGS! Bender: ...I'm a thing....

emeraldboy what channel are you watching?

    by SimonOrangefish

firstly, all the DVDs are out, so there is no excuse to be behind, and secondly, sky one never binned the series, they showed all the episodes. and also, for the past 6 months to a year or so before the summer started, they were showing futurama repeats at 5pm each weekday, and they went throught the whole series twice, if not more! futurama is awesome, can't wait for it to be back!

Just here to join the love-fest, although I had to think a minute for an appropriate quote that hadn't been done already. In my defence, that's only because I'm less than halfway through re-watching the series at the mo, and the last time was a while back. -------------- Seriously though, is this the most positive talkback ever or what?

    The DVD commentaries...

    by BizarroJerry

I thought they were some of the best commentaries I've heard. Those guys really love their show and have fun. And they have a commentary for EVERY episode. Sometimes they had too man people at once, but John DiMaggio, voice of Bender cracks me up. He seems to have roughly the same personality...

I just have to ask, how poor is the state of television when not one, but two shows that have been cancelled years earlier by a network return to the air?

  • Aug. 7, 2006, 10:12 a.m. CST

It's not the state of TV, it's just that Fox sucks

    by MrBoinfoint

Run by Republican dick heads promoting a conservative cause while at the same time pandering to the lowest common denominator all in an effort to make money with complete disregard for artistic accomplishment. They look at nothing more than the bottom line. If a show isn't an instant success, they trash it. In the early days, when they were hungry and growing, they nurtured even bad shows. They supported Married With Children and the Simpsons, hell, even Get A Life limped along for three seasons. Now they consistently cancel the shows with true intelligence and quality (Futurama, Undeclared, Arrested Motherfucking Development) and make way for shitacular idiot fests. The real reason for this isn't merely to make money, however, but by providing nothing but cheap, stupid entertainment that causes the viewers to turn off their minds and drool along, they are dumbing down the populace and conditioning them to accept lower standards, so their political ideals can be more easily lapped up, including their braindead manchild of a president. *affixes tinfoil hat* Still, glad to see Fry and co. back.

I don't know what better testament to the quality of show I can offer than to say I've been laughing out loud just reading the quotes in this talkback. I've seen every episode at least 4 times, and still get at least one really good laugh and a couple of chuckles whenever I watch.

    The wisdom of Fry.

    by Teamwak

"Its just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"

    by Teamwak

"I've never heard of such a brutal and shocking injustice that I cared so little about." "The best way into a girl's bed is through her parents. Have sex with them, and you're in." "I am the man with no name - Zapp Brannigan, at your service." (from his chat-up line book) "If I said you had a nice body would you take off your pants and dance around a little?" "If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate."
