Herc's Seen IFC's MINOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JACKIE WOODMAN!!

Published at:  Aug 04, 2006 2:12:01 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It’s an TV-MA IFC comedy about an aspiring screenwriter, co-written by and starring SNL vet (and current “Lucky Louie” co-star) Laura Kightlinger. Lauren Tom, formerly a sitcom kid on “The Nanny,” plays her cocaine-snorting best pal.

It’s very much a lower-budget cousin to “Larry Sanders,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Entourage,” and all the other HBO showbiz sitcoms that toss around the grown-up language. The first episode makes fun of Hollywood cults a little too toothlessly, but subsequent episodes – which deal with a stolen script idea – employ more continuity and prove surprisingly addictive.

But what matters Herc’s opinion?

Time Magazine says:

… With luck, the industry will soon know comedian Kightlinger (Lucky Louie), who also created and writes this acerbic, indie-flavored complement to Entourage's big-budget studio fantasy. … gets off to a middling start, with a forced, satirical episode involving a cult and '70s movie icon Sally Kellerman. It gets realer and funnier in the next three … it's refreshing to see a sitcom about a woman past her 20s who is obsessed with her career clock, not her biological one. A minor accomplishment? Maybe, but one to be proud of. …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… a spot-on, deadpan and very of-the-moment late-night comedy series … It's all about the antagonism and poor people skills of our clueless protagonists, and in that way "Jackie Woodman" fairly nails the stereotype of the showbiz wannabe pathetically clinging to the periphery, blissfully out of touch with the breathtaking hopelessness of it all …

Variety says:

… Kightlinger has a nice presence and sultry voice, and she plays insecure well enough, even when delivering unconvincing lines like, "They don't like women in this town." For the most part, though, the show is dunderheaded, such as when Jackie crashes a swanky party hoping to interview a hotshot director who "cranks out films the way my cousins make fat kids." Sure, no publicist intermediaries in this world -- just attend a party and Quentin or Bryan will spill their guts on the spot. …

TV Guide says:

… Her misadventures are weirdly absurdist but not all that funny, though I'll be forever grateful for the cameo in which a freakish Sally Kellerman recalls her infamous '70s Lost Horizon musical.…

Entertainment Weekly gives it a “B-minus” and says:

… as the cringe-worthy moments abound, we're strangely (and guiltily) drawn back for more. …

The L.A. Weekly says:

… Kightlinger … carries her tall frame as if she’d purchased it at a height store and wished she could return it — the real currency of human interaction is a trade-off of disappointments.
It’s a witty shrug of a worldview that, along with the sultry-voiced slice to Kightlinger’s delivery, gives some satiric heft … But Kightlinger’s buoyantly cynical brand of comedy — somewhere between Sarah Silverman’s bubblegum shock and Kathy Griffin’s devilish glee — isn’t soapbox material. In her view, everybody fails, and it’s no big. And sometimes the victory is in just trying to get back to square one. While she’d just as soon get a laugh out of Jackie’s own foibles — drinking, men, social awkwardness — Kightlinger is smart enough to know that her slacker Dorothy Parker vibe makes Jackie better suited to be the one cracking wise about a Scientology-like cult than falling for it. ...

11 p.m. Friday. IFC.

Kightlinger was best known lately as Jack Black's lady

    by mrboinfoint

Her stand-up special is hilarious, but she floundered on SNL (along with Sarah Silverman and Jeaneane Garofalo). Nice to see she's finally getting some attention. But something's a little off about her nowadays. She used to be absolutely gorgeous, but it looks like she's had some bad plastic surgery in past few yeras. I believe it had something to do with TMJ, but it still looks like she had cheek implants or an eye job or something, and frankly it's kind of distracting. The show's pretty funny though, so I hope it'll do good. And someone please, for the love of God, get rid of Shermdawg. Between the Venom Mirror posts and the Melting Owl bullshit and these long strings of attention-starved nonsense, he's racing to the top of the list of Most Annoying Posters. He's not funny, his comments never advance the conversation, his ideas are idiot, and he simply won't shut the fuck up. Sorry, don't wanna strart a flame war or anything, but my patience is at an end. He needs to go.

Let's see, you are one out of like um....hell, like three people who've said something like that in my year here on AICN, and I think
I might be counting you twice. And furthermore, you might not dig my (sometimes) lame attempts at humor, but a lot of others have said they enjoyed my posts. Did you even read any of my "Hidden Image" posts? I never said it was Venom. The MELTING OWL AND UNSOCIALABLE HAMMER posts served a purpose. As well as WE SNORT OVERSEAS. Those were simply ways to get my opinions across without having to defend them throughout the whole talkback. MELTING OWL was cracked, and several others use that phrase now. You say my ideas never advance the conversation? Check the 24 and SMALLVILLE talkbacks. Check the Real World: Austin Reunion talkback, hell, if it wasn't for me, the conversation wouldn't have advanced at all there. You say my "ideas are idiot"? What? You don't think Denis Leary would have made a good Joker? Josh Holloway wouldn't make a good Solid Snake/Snake Plisken? You don't think a Kevin Smith directed Stan Lee biopic starring Jason Lee isn't a good idea? What idea's of mine are "idiot"? Heh, hate to burst your bubble, but the word you were looking for was "IDIOTIC". I'm sorry if you don't like my ideas, or my posts, but you know what? If everyone thought the same, the world, and AICN would be boring a fuck. And I think the only reason you take offense to my stuff, is because I refuse to be one of the 60% of talkbackers that can't get over Bryan Singer being gay, and that Brett Ratner didn't write X3. I'm sorry that I disrupt the endless string of SINGER IS GAY! SUPES WILL BOMB! With a MELTING OWL post. I'm sorry I didn't fall for the bullshit stunt writng of 24 last season. I'm sorry that I posted seven out of thirteen times here. In an otherwise DEAD talkback that no one (as of yet) gave two shits about. And by the way, did you see Everett Robert's post? I advanced the conversation there. How many times have you seen fucktards just posting "FIRST!"? At least I said something pretaining to the topic. Hell, only two of my posts were just fluff. And one was a tip about the Cena flick, which later was given a talkback. (I doubt it was because of it though.) Seriously dude, if you don't like my stuff, don't read it, no one is forcing you to. And if AICN got rid of every poster someone deemed "Annoying" this site wouldn't be around. So in closing I say...MELTING OWL AND UNSOCIALABLE HAMMER, THERES A HIDDEN FACE IN THE SPIDEY 3 TEASER IMAGE!!!, LEARY AS THE JOKER!!!, SMALLVILLE WILL OWN YOUR ASS!!!, WE SNORT OVERSEAS!!!, DAMN YOU ROTHMAN!!!, Nuff said. Nuff said. THIRTEENTH!!! :P

    by mrboinfoint

Speaking of hidden messages, all of my typos are carefully planned and exeecuted. All of the missing/extra/misplaced letters fit together to form my secret manifesto. What? Can't be any more ridiculously stupid or borderline paranoid schizophrenic than barging into every fucking Spider-Man related talkback raving about hidden images in posters no one cares about. Spend your time decoding them shermy, and maybe you'll be able to stop my dastardly plan to take over this website and delete pointless annoying ass motherfuckers like you. That out of the way, do you have anything to add to the discussion of Laura Kightlinger's new show? Hmm. Thought not.

Wow that was a great summation of Kightlinger's talents

    by mrboinfoint

You've truly contributed in a postive manner to discourse on this article, and have in no way violated one of the main rules of the talkback (that would be constantly spewing off-topic bullshit) that should have gotten your ass banned about four Spider-Man talkbacks ago. That said, I 'm looking forward to the next episode and the season-long arc, because as funny as making fun of Hollywood cults can be, I'd like an actual story.

    MrBoinfoint, thank you for...

    by shermdawg

not continuing with the childish insults. But your statement, implying that my "Image" posts in the Spider-man talkbacks are off-topic, only furthers my belief that you don't read this site very often. If posting a image that was (accidently) found in a teaser poster in a talkback for that film, is not off-topic. It has every right to be there, just as much as anyone discussing comics, cartoons, or possible Evil Dead sequels and/or reboots. I don't make a big deal out of it. I post the link, and answer any responses. A good 70% of talkbacks go "off-topic", haven't you noticed that by now? Now, I'm not claiming innocence, by no means. The only time my "off-topic"-ness became a major problem, was the Supernatural incident, but thats because my post got a huge ammount of response, and it hijacked the Survivor thread. (Sure it was wrong, but, I still standby my actions, because the finale deserved a talkback.) Herc could have easily banned me over it. But he didn't. Why? I don't know. I would like to think that he feels that I contribute in some ways to these things. But I could be wrong. Boin, you are the only person I've encountered that basically has a deathwish on my AICN handle. And I can't believe that it's over being "off-topic", because like I've said, theres tons of other talkbackers that would be, or should be guilty by your standards. I haven't did this since the Real World: Austin tb, but I think we need a commentary of my posts....1.IFC? IFC??? I DON'T GOT NO STINKIN' IFC!- Not off-topic, I don't have IFC, as well as many others, so I can't watch it. 2.Probably because, I'm too cheap for teh digital cable.- No explanation need. And is this any more of a problem than the people that say "Wow I can't believe I was FIRST!" in the second post? 3.Why do all the chick shows have longass titles??? Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, The New Adventures of Old Christine..... am I forgetting any?- This was a completely on-topic, and valid question. 4. Since this is TV related, HERC you may wanna...- This was a tip. There was a tb, up for, but most likely not due to this tip, hours later. 5.YouTube's down and I can't find a group in WoW. (both true) So I'm forced to talk about Laura Kightlinger. (The only one that I show disrespect for the subject at hand in a throw away post.) I remember her being extremely tall. (she is) I never dug her comedy much, (I didn't) but she was kinda hot. (she was) - a throw away post, yet still not off-topic. 6. "i'll wait for the porno version: e.g. "the major accomplishments of jackie and the woodman", etc." - not my post, but you bust my chops, when this is posted? lol 7.WOW THIS TALKBACK WAS BUSY WHILE I WAS AWAY!!!- whether it was off-topic or not, this passes simply for the fact that it is a talback observation. 8."Knightlinger, I remember the name from SNL but for the life of me I can't place her...she have any recurring skits or bits on SNL..also Sherm, I'm too cheap for Digital Cable so no IFC for me as well"- Once again, not my post, but here it justifies my first two posts. and yes to some extent, I furthered the conversation. Actually, outside of this thing you have drug us into, that was the only real bit of on-topic conversation between two AICN members that took place in here. :P Now, you have unjustly pegged me for a delusional conspiracy theorist, so I might as well play along. I believe I remember you saying in one of the 24 talkbacks you were french-canadian, (I could be mistaken) and IFC being canadian based, could you be an employee? And seeing as how you are the only poster that seems to care about this show, I would use that "p" word people like to throw around here, but I won't, because thinking you were one of those, would be crazy. And lord knows I don't want to give you any more "evidence" in questioning my sanity. :P
