HELLBOY 2 defeats two studios' plans to keep him under wraps - joins his fellow monsters at UNIVERSAL!!!

Published at:  Aug 04, 2006 1:40:58 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... Guillermo Del Toro - just can't quit on HELLBOY 2. And yes, that is a very "Brokeback" statement. Guillermo's love for the big red guy, brought him back from the clutches of development hell.

That HELLBOY 2 will call UNIVERSAL home is a strange story. You see - that's where HELLBOY was originally pitched. And it was ultimately Stacey Snider, who saw the project differently from Del Toro that caused Guillermo to seek the project elsewhere. Snider is now at Dreamworks - and no longer standing between Mignola's creation and the UNIVERSAL home of classic movie monsters.

I had given up hope that I'd ever see HELLBOY fighting the tooth fairy(s) - now I know I will see that glorious scene brought to life. Now - if only Mignola will let Guillermo bring a bit of "Lobster" to the film. HINT HINT MIKE!!!

HELLBOY is now set to showdown with THE DARK KNIGHT, IRON MAN and probably WOLVERINE in Summer 2008. Sounds like a comic fan's paradise.

    Blade II Sucked!!!

    by metalwater

Yes...Blade II sucked...and between the writer, the producers, the studio, Wesley Snipes and the director of the movie, I'm not sure who is responsible for that mess...however, I must say that Hellboy was a good movie...and is everything that Blade II should have been and more. It even blows the Hulk movie away, by leaps and bounds!!! Hence, I am looking forward to the sequel. And in other comic book news, I just saw V For Vendetta on DVD...and found it to be great!!! The creators of Batman Begins and Superman Returns only wish they could have made their films 1/10th as good as V For Vendetta. Now, although I'm fully on Alan Moore's side of things...and though, I was down on the Warchowski Brothers and Joel Silver for the Matrix sequels...(and deservedly so) I have to say, they kicked major ass with that movie!!! Which brings to mind, my feeling that the Warchowskis really owe us all a Matrix redo...meaning, give us some sequels of the Matrix that really honor the original film in the way that V For Vendetta does!!! And in regard to the creator of V For Vendetta...if I could get a message to Alan Moore, I'd tell him to watch the film...I think he'll really dig it despite the fact that DC, and Hollywood as a whole, has screwed him and others in the past with bad adaptations of their works. This time, they got it right...or about as close to right as they are ever going to get!!! My mom and brother love V For Vendetta as much, or more, than I do...and that's saying a lot, since they are not comic book or graphic novel fans!!!

I am SO glad that there will be a Hellboy 2. It truly is fitting that it's with Universal. Good choice, guys! Del Toro has fought hard for this one, so I'm sure it'll kick on the 1st one (it had it's flaws, but was entirely enjoyable). BTW - Matty, I hope they never do. I grew up (for the most part) reading comics. They will always be a source for new and (for good and bad) interesting ideas. I just wish we could get past the origin stories. Do we always have to know how they started? I loved X-men for not giving us every characters origin (though I guess we'll get some of it in the coming years) and just getting to the story. (Could I have used any more brackets?) (Maybe)

Surely one of you creative types could do a really good imagining of what it would be like for Knowles and Del Toro to get busy to get down with some hot sweaty flabby disgusting smelly man love. These two look exactly alike and as repellent as the image is I'm sure they've talked about it during their late night phone sex chats and mutual masturbation IM cyber chats. The web is full fo gay slash fiction but Ain't It Gross News really needs to be the home page for Harry/Guillermo slash stories. by shithead

Del Toro has made some fine movies over the years, reaching the pinacle with devil's backbone. However, Hellboy was just downright terrible. The comic, upon re-reading, owes much to Mignola's art work. It's what really adds the mood to the storyline. If you arrest the storyline from the art, it's actually pretty fuckin' weak, as we saw in the "hellboy" movie. This is a title best left to the comic books. I, for one, hope this film will never reach a megaplex near me.

    Good news, bad news

    by karnov

    Good news: Hellboy's comming back!

Bad news: That DelToro's still got his clumsy hack sausage fingers on the project.

I know he's much loved on this site but seriously, he fumbles the ball time and agan because he has the subtlty of and Israeli response. I can't be alone in thinking that though he put in place all the elements that should have made a good hellboy movie, none of them came together very well.

Props to Mignola at least for recognising that for a film to work you need to keep out the stupid fanboy geek refrences and Lobster Johnson is best left alone.

Give the movie to Gilliam or in Karnov's dream world a top of his game first live action english feature for Hayao Miyazaki!

    Hellboy and Dark Knight

    by samson_k

I loved Hellboy - I thought it was a tremendous movie, really, I love the character and I loved how the movie represented it. I do have one tiny wee niggly concern about Batman being called 'The Dark Knight' - which is that 'The Dark Knight Returns' has become an iconic Batman story and created an alternate Batman and Gotham City etc - so, if 'The Dark Knight' is a success which is highly likely then does the third in the series become 'The Dark Knight Returns' but without having anything to do with Millers story. I do need more hobbies I know that but it concerns me a little is all

because no one can ever agree. Hellboy in both comic and movie form are treasures. Del Toro, Aronofsky, Nolan, Rodriguez are not hacks in any respect. A M.A.S.K. movie might be silly if they held as true to the toys as you guys want("MASK crusaaaders working OVERTIME fighting CRIME!"). Wolvie's solo movie will be way better than X3. Hellboy will be way more popular when this comes out because the cartoon will be on. But none of that matters because many of you haven't said something was actually good in 7 years.

It was ok, but not as great as it should have been. The story and action were just standard action fare, nothing special. The makeup was good, but the cinematography was WAY off the mark. It should have been dark and gritty looking, not well lit and shiny. The best way to do Hellboy would be as a stop motion flick.

    The problem with Hellboy is:

    by noeland

That it was not SCARY or otherwise very compelling. It was only OK as a film, but it looked great and had great FX work.

I think in his love of the character, and slapping in his favorite couple of scenes from the comic book, Del Toro forgot to build a decent storyline around him.

Mignola has said a million times "This is not my Hellboy, this is Del Toro's Hellboy." And it really shows.

The comic book is creepy, and interesting, and some times scary.

The film was a very nearly a slapstick comedy.

Here is to hoping that HB2 is a little more frightening and lacks the fresh faced kids.

WTF? those nazis with gas masks and the sword fists. Those guys creeped me out. I remember watching spiderman amid all that hype and seeing those banners for Hellboy and thinking why the hell is this not out yet. Then then finally I did see, it was so much better then Spiderman 2, oddly. Hellboy hooked me from the beginning. If you one is a comic book purist, which I am not, then you will find fault with hellboy. Cant Wait to see hellboy. Pearlman was inspired casting. I loved the scene with the kid on the roof, with hellboy asking him for love advice. Other, purists possibly hated that.

    by mr.underwater

But not terribly engrossing. The movie was very episodic, and while each episode had a nice arc, the movie as a whole really didn't. Add to that, it was cut very erratically, and at times the VFX were really poor, thus pulling you straight out of the action. That said, it set up some pretty neat characters, and if the above issued are fixed, I could see the sequel being largely superior to the first.

So just save us all the time and post your review, and then proceed on with the production blogs/video diaries/ and inevitable daily set visit reports; you know, the usual knob-polishing treatment for reserved for the "good" studios and "good" directors who don't forget to give you pwesents. that cleared the way for my exhausted glee when I watched Miami Vice. Midway thru it, I thought.....another summer of Pirates, X-men, Superman, computer generated kiddy movies.....and FINALLY a movie geared for adults who dont live in their parents basement.

That said.....Summer 2008 looks to be stacking up just fine......my only hope, is that Michael Mann makes another violent titfest for me to snap myself back into reality with.

    CLIVE OWEN AS LOBSTER JOHNSON!

    by traumnovelle

He would be soooo perfect. He could play it so dead seriously, but since he's such a great actor it wouldn't be ridiculous. I mean...Lobster Johnson IS a silly character, but Clive Owen could make you forget that. Fuck. That would be so perfect. Now here's hoping the film will be a few shades darker than the first, with more silent moments. Also, can I get some dope flashbacks and shit? Like Mignola always does. Like in the Island, show Mayan priests guarding sacred tablets of knowledge from conquistadors or ancient Hyperborian cities and shit. That stuff gets my blood pumping. Anyway, great fucking news, I can't wait. Viva Hellboy and Guillermo.

    by mits777

Hellboy one definitely growns on you. First time i saw it i thought it was ok but after subsequent views it has gotten better and better. Perlman plays the best superhero adaption in any comic movie to date. I agree with earlier poster who said they want Riddick sequel to be greenlight. Between the theatrical version of Chronicles of Riddick and the Unrated dvd version is night and day. The dvd is way more cohesive especially the less edited fighting. Check out this rad politically incorrect movie, game, and music review site. http://tinyurl.com/pv8do

Hellboy doesn't need a huge effects budget.

    by superninja

What it needs is a director who understands how to use shadows and build suspense. Just use the panels from the comics as a reference a la Sin City. The first film used effects when they were completely unnecessary. Just pure overkill.

V For Vendetta vs. Batman Begins!!!

    by metalwater

V For Vendetta was about something real and meaningful...Go back and watch the movie...it's a real metaphor for 911, warning us to not give up our power to a government that would trick us to do just that, by staging a false terrorist attack on itself and its people. It's about the dangers of embracing fascism and giving away your God given rights to freedom of will and freedom of expression. However, Batman Begins is a super hero rehash that was cleary inspired by the Legend Of The Lone Ranger and or the Spielberg produced movie Young Sherlock Holmes, where we see how our hero learned his super hero skills. But Batman Begins, was slow in its pacing...and was just plain boring!!! V For Vendetta is a smart man's super hero film...Batman Begins, well...is simply for the dummies!!!

V For Vendetta is NOT a metaphor for 9/11!

    by mechasheeva

It is based on a BRITISH graphic novel from the early to mid 80's (it was stretched over a ridiculously long period of time). And while there were changes, its theme stays true in that one line in all the trailers: "The people should not be afraid of the government, government should be afraid of the people." Yes it was politicized (a Bill O'Reilly type and a Dick Cheney type pop up) but the movie asks how far we would be willing to go to preserve our freedom, not how far the government would go to take it away.
As for the BB vs. V debate, V is a very good film with a lot of style, good performances, etc., but its pacing is uneven and its heavy-handed. In my opinion, Batman Begins was the best movie released last year, with the acting, directing, effects, everything pitch-perfect, capturing the tone of Miller and post-Miller Batman perfectly. But they're two different movies with two different agendas, so a direct comparison makes no little sense.

    by metalwater

Of course, you moron...we all know that the original graphic novel was based on the government of former English Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher!!! However, in the light of 911 and the fact that it has been years since Thatcher has acted as Prime Minister...The Warchowski Brothers and Joel Silver decided to draw parallels to 911!!! That is the thrust and the immediacy of the film...and the reason it was made!!! If you are too stupid to see that...and read between the lines at the clear and utter subversive and political satire based under pennings of this movie...you need to take your silly ass back to school!!! The Warchowskis are straight out accusing the Bush administraition of secretly pulling off 911, metaphorically speaking of course!!! That's the true boldness of V For Vendetta!!! But in regard to Batman Begins, it is a hard charged political thriller for the second grader class who think Kenny on South Park was assassinated by the school chef!!! If you know anything about the subject...there wasn't a lone shooter...No...it was a conspiracy!!!

That whole subplot, I'm convinced was placed in the movie to make the villains even more detestable. Say what you want, I don't think this was a flick for cracked-out conspiracy theorists. And Batman Begins was not a, uh "hard charged political thriller" nor was it trying to be. . . it was just badass. I'm done now, because you were rude and called me moron and my ass silly. by doc_strange

That monster, Sammy kept showing up and that Kung Fu Nazi guy was just rediculous. I really like the whole love thing between Hellboy and Liz, though. It gave the movie a whole different dynamic. I think overall the film needed more variety than just Hellboy fighting a resurrecting monster. I did think a lot of the quips made by Hellboy were genuinely funny. And Ron Pearlman's acting was top-notch. I also think Selma Blair is some hot eye candy. She should make more movies.

How Sam Keith did The Maxx cartoon. It played out just like a comic book with panels and shit. Great camera work. If I didn't know better, I'd say that Ang Lee pretty much ripped that off for how he shot The Hulk. But essntially, the cartoon would be in Mignola's style but have motion and shit, kind of like a moving comic but retaining its dark roots and mood. From what I've seen, though, that's not what it looks like they're doing.

    This VFV vs. BB stuff

    by frgl_rockatansky

has to stop. Because simply put by Mechasheeva, they are two incredibly different films. However, BATMAN BEGINS does indeed remain true to its source materiel, and V FOR VENDETTA does NOT. I am one of the world's biggest V fans. The comic series is my favorite piece of printed fiction ever. I have tattoos of the V symbol and the words AVE ATQUE VALE on my arms. When I saw V FOR VENDETTA, I knew I was going to be disappointed. I knew they would, in many key moments, screw the pooch. And they did. For me, V is equal parts story and character. They fucked over so many of the characters that it wasn't even funny. Finch was fucked. Dominic and Delia were fucked. Adam Susan was majorly fucked when he was changed to Sutler. Evey Hammond was fucked, especially when they made her a middle-class twentysomething with a pretty decent job instead of a 16-year-old barely surviving and attempting to turn tricks. V... the moment after he stood down the police gunfire and revealed that there was some bullshit Eastwood-Spaghetti Western boiler plate under his cloak... that completely fucked up the moment and the character. And no Heyers, no Almonds, no Harper, no Kitty Kat Keller... and the most horrific oversight... no FATE. The ONLY character that they treated with some modicum of respect is Valerie Page, which is why that sequence is the only one in the film with any weight. It's no wonder that Moore took his name off it. Hollywood has had him grabbing his ankles since day one with FROM HELL and fucking LXG. Personally, I'm pissed that they signed ANYONE to do WATCHMEN. Sometimes, you just have to leave it alone. As far as HELLBOY is concerned, I think that it took the SPIDER-MAN road, which is a good one to take, but not when you're dealing with a comic character that is not NEARLY as iconic. The film required a lot more than just fanboy-love. It needed a lot more ass-kicking moments to hold most people's interest, including my own, and I like the HELLBOY comic a lot. I'm hoping since they got most of this stuff out of the way with the first film, they'll be able to go in a more action-oriented direction. Just do SOMETHING, Guillermo, to make it a bit more involving from the post-credits on. A lesson needs to be learned from films like M:I-3. A whiz-bang opening does not an entire movie make. And to all those out there who think that V is the end-all be-all of comic book cinema, read the fucking graphic novel, and if you still think it's a great movie after that, then there is something very wrong... with your brain.

    by dirkd13"

V For Vendetta was indeed a reaction to the Thatcherite Conservative government of the 80's and the fact that there was rampant privatisation/shutting down of national industries (most pertinently the miners), simply highlighting the fact that it is the people who have the power. It's a universally relevant theme, post 9/11 or not. BB is the far more entertaining, but less thought-provoking, film. Oh and Flickerhead, thanks for the Gobot tidbit, did not know that!

I didn't see Sin City, but heard the style was a little on the dry side - not overly stylized. But you have to give them credit as it was a first attempt. I'm real curious to see how 300 looks and if the concept works. Because if it's successful, it could create a lot of freedom for comic book films. One thing that continues to bum me out is how unimaginative some of these translations are. Sky Captain, for instance, had a dry script and was poorly paced and directed during the action sequences, which are obviously important to that type of story. But the framework is ideal to make a Wonder Woman or Superman movie.

    by iron pills

I still thought Hellboy was a great comic book film, and I never read an issue of the comic in my life. But I loved the characters, the whole angle of the BPRD investigating scary paranormal happenings, and for a movie that didn't have a huge budget, I felt the effects more than held their own against some other effects heavy movies. Now, at least the second movie will have a couple of things going in it's favor; 1. They set up the main characters already in the first film. 2. godoffire brings up the second point, with the animated features, there will be a lot more awareness of the character, being watched by millions of viewers, potentially many who will probably discover Hellboy for the first time. And really, who didn't feel that the first Hellboy movie wasn't better than some of the more recent offerings from Marvel. I'm the biggest fan of Marvel characters but really, they've had their good (Spiderman, X-men) their o.k. (Fantastic Four, Punisher) and the bad (Elektra: need I say more?)So yeah, pretty excited about Hellboy 2! I often hear about a character named Johan the Ectoplasmic Agent, can someone enlighten me?

Hell, while we're at it, why not a Daredevil "reboot"..

    by iron pills

A green screen, Miller directed or co-directed, a'la Sin City, Daredevil movie. It can bring back the character without doing an origin story, sorta like Superman returns, if they don't want to bring back everyone from the first Daredevil flick. If not the director, at least the cast. Daredevil is a hero of the night anyway. I can just imagine some of the lighting and angles in some scenes in this newer flick, if it were ever to come true. Picturing Daredevil brooding, Spidey 3 style, on top of the church that he fought Bullseye in. Rain pouring down like that scene in Sin City with Marv in front of the statue of the clergyman. Thunder booming, lightning flashing, Daredevil filtering out who needs help the most, then proceeding to kick ass... If not Daredevil, how about Punisher?

Tell me... why couldn't they have done a SIN CITY-type film with VFV? Huh? You see, this is the difference between 'ADAPTATION' and ADOPTION. When you have a film like BB or SPIDER-MAN or SUPERMAN or even BLADE, you've got literally hundreds of issues of source materiel. You can pick and choose. With something like V or SIN CITY or LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (which I truly consider to be one of the worst films EVER and it makes me happy to think that Norrington brought about his own demise with that ultra shit film), you've got only about 20 issues MAX. So fuck that idea. And thematically, sure... there's a lot carried over. SO? Theme and visuals do not a good film make. You've got to BELIEVE that V is doing something important, not just for himself but for the people... who in the film, aren't cowering in the shadows afraid of their every move being watched... they just seem bored. And don't hand me the "They've been frightened into complacency" bullshit either in the film's defence. This is a film that, in retrospect, isn't even really a good film. There are some good performances, but the writing and direction leave a great deal to be desired. This is what I'm talking about as far as ADOPTION, which is what this film was. The Wachowski's and Joel Silver and James McTeigue made this film their baby, not really realising it belonged to someone else first. When I heard that they were making V and WATCHMEN and they had signed McTeigue for V and Paul Greengrass for WATCHMEN, I thought that these directors should be switched out. Greengrass would have brought the grit and grime of London town to V, and McTeigue could have brought the shiny, slick, effects-heavy background to WATCHMEN. And fanboy devotion is what makes films like this work most oft. With SIN CITY, Rodriguez would NOT make the film unless Miller was making it with him, which is why SIN CITY is such a great film. And sometimes, it's the sub-plots that are the most important parts of the story. Excising VITAL sub-plots made the film weaker THEMATICALLY... in terms of its political commentary, and made th film seem, to many who have seen it and have posted here, to be an assault on American foreign policy when the initial tale was a comment on British domestic policy. That's what happens when you have ADOPTIONS instead of ADAPTATIONS. Do we really think that all this "Bush Sucks" shit was intended in the film? No, but that's what a great many Americans took out of it because of Hollywood's "Liberal Agenda". These are the same mental-defectives that claim that Palpatine in ROTS was Bush. But that's neither here nor there. V could have been an adaptation, but the filmmakers chose adoption. Which is why, as a film and as a cautionary tale, it failed. It's not just because I love the books. It's because I also love cinema and it can work better with such tremendous source materiel.

...I thought Hellboy did just fine. It was visually perfect and hit all the right beats in the telling of the character's origins. Sure, the subsequent story took some (a lot) of liberties with the source material, but it was still pretty entertaining.
