THE FOUNTAIN Has Been Pushed Back...But Not By Much!!

Published at:  Aug 01, 2006 8:58:06 AM CDT

href="mailto:merrick@aintitcool.com">Merrick here...

Warner Brothers has pushed back the release of Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN. It was originally scheduled to hit October 13. The film will now open November 22. This will allow more time for advertising, and to build up “word of mouth”.

The new date represents the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a coveted date for films hoping to make a splash during the Christmas movie season. While not implicitly stated by Warners, it should be noted that movies released around this time tend to enjoy a bit more attention in the Oscar race than films released earlier in the year.

THE FOUNTAIN will now open against the Jerry Bruckheimer produced/Tony Scott directed DÉJÀ VU - a film which also involves a dude trying to save a girl, and funkiness in the time stream. A strange clustering...not so sure that's wise. Hopefully, this won’t be too confusing to the non-Geek masses out there.

Hollywood Reporter has an article about it, which you can read HERE.

    And we trust WB?

    by larry of arabia

    Everything they've touched has turned to crap this year. From opening Superman Returns one week before Pirates of the Carribean to not realeasing Monster House at halloween their scheduling has been a disaster. Now they release an art house time travel flick on the same day as a mainstream time travel flick made by a big budget director with one of the most acclaimed stars of the decade. Brilliant. This is a group that didn't bother to work to make Brandon Routh a heartthrob before Superman Returns when all they needed to do is call People Magazine and EW and he'd be the cover story. Although it was a confused film they didn't stick with one theme for the marketing of Lady in the Water, switching from "bedtime story" to "mystery" to "supernatural thriller" in the course of 3 months. I don't think anybody knew Posidedn existed. I have no trust in WB. None. If they were releasing Raiders of the Lost Arc this year it would open on Christmas Day with marketing campaign that called it a slapstick comedy.

    Ratner sounds like a dick

    by monkey butler

    "How can I be a hack when I surround myself with the best crew in Hollywood?" Very simply, Mr. Ratner: because you make easy, bad films easily and badly. You can talk all you want about entertaining an audience, but anyone can sit down a todler and play peek-a-boo and make it laugh. You're a hack because you unashamedly compare yourself to Spielberg, namedrop Polanski (about 50 fucking times) and boast about how much you love your own films, without realising that your films don't have 1% of the talent, technically, thematically, artistically, narratively or in terms of characterisation, that Speilberg or Polanski could conjure up in their sleep. You're a daytime soap, Ratner; an airport novel. In short, a fucking arrogant hack. I don't particularly care for Harry's ramblings most of the time (please, Harry, for the love of God, learn to write!), and what you say could very well be true, but you seem to have missed the point - Harry is a film geek, he's interested in, passionate about, film. He knows everything there is to know about the art and craft of films, and while it remains to be seen whether he can actually apply that to his own films (if and when any are ever released/made), he could at least see that you doing a Superman film would be a bigger trainwreck than was your X-men.

    I can't figure out how they're going to advertise it. Maybe if it's good enough to garner Oscar noms it can make some post-nom bank, or something on the DVD market, but unless they hire a genius, I'm expecting no more than 20 mil, and the next time someone comes up with a film idea like this, the studio will reject it. Damn shame.

    It doesn't seem likely that it matters when this movie opens... October... November... February... never... it'll struggle to find its audience beyond the Aronofsky faithful whenever. Though opening it Thanksgiving seems especially unwise, unless they're hoping it'll draw in random schmucks who don't give a damn what they see.

    by orbots commander

    This reminds me of the decision to open SR a week before POTC2. And releasing ANT BULLY against MONSTER HOUSE. And LADY IN THE WATER. No. Who the hell cares about "flopping" and "finding an audience?" If it bombs so bad that it's only in theaters one weekend, every talk backer here will have finally seen the damn thing. That's all that matters. Whether or not it sucks or bombs or ends Aranofsky's career, we can discuss that when the official talk-back is up. But for now we just need to SEE IT.

    by plum

    Look, the movie's ad campaign isn't going to change the minds people who are already looking forward to it- we're pre-sold. WB needs to worry about the other 99% of the viewing public because they're in the business of making money. If this movie flops, Aronofsky will have a tough time making his next film. If it's a hit, well, WB at least will be more willing to take chances. So yeah, THE FOUNTAIN's BO receipts are going to matter. And I really don't think this was the best of moves.

    because it is so hardcore sci-fi and based in reality. It's so nuts.. takes multiple viewing just to fully understand it all. I loved putting the pieces together. and there are still people who would actually pay to see ANYTHING by that shitstain of a director? You people should be ashamed of your utter lack of taste. Tony Scott is the worst director working today. His movies are more vomit inducing than Uwe Boll...I'm not kidding. Ridley should disown that fucking joke of a brother. Tony Scott made 2 decent movies in his life...The Hunger and True Romance. True Romance was SAVED by Tarantino's witty script and please don't bring up Top Gun or Beverly Hills Cop II. Those movies had a shelf life of about 3 years before they started stinking up the planet.
