Casting already underway with Favreau's IRON MAN film? Juicy rumor here...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a nice, juicy casting rumor for you folks. A few days ago there was word that reached my ears about the role of Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's IRON MAN being offered to a very interesting actor. The word was that IRON MAN was being offered to HUSTLE & FLOW's Terrence Howard. That rumor was bizarre, yet somehow fitting. In the recent interview I did with Jon Favreau at Comic-Con, he told me that he was looking for a great actor that hadn't hit it huge yet, a name that wouldn't overshadow the title of the film. Howard fit that bill.

So, I checked in with sources deep within Paramount and Marvel to see if I could confirm this weird rumor. Besides having the perfect mustache for the role, I think a lot of fans wouldn't have been able to get around the racial difference, much like they didn't get behind Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin in DAREDEVIL.

I finally got one of my sources to tell me that Terrence Howard was indeed offered a role in IRON MAN, but not that of Tony Stark.

Going over my interview again, Favreau listed off a number of IRON MAN regulars who would appear in the film. The obvious conclusion I reached was that Terrence Howard was offered the role of James Rhodes, good friend to Tony Stark and future bearer of the armor and IRON MAN identity. He became known as War Machine after Stark reclaimed the name and suit.

So, that's the word. Terrence Howard has been offered the role of James Rhodes in the IRON MAN film. No guarantee he'll take it, but I think Howard is one of the most interesting actors working in the business today and his presence in the film will only make it better. Especially if we get to see Howard don a super suit in this film (or sequels) and kick some ass. What do you folks think?

Now, THAT would get me interested in this project.

I think it's an interesting idea. I'd be cool with this. He'd be a good Stark.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7 a.m. CST

    No kidding

    by mrtwig48

I hope those execs realize that we didn't like Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin because he was black. It was because the movie sucked and he sucked in the role.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7 a.m. CST

Tony a little ethnic looking anyways.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:09 a.m. CST

    Pretty safe casting

    by JuggFuckler

Howard was awesome in Hustle and Flow, was in last year's Best Picture, and almost looks white! Good job Favreau! Now its time for the Replacements 2: Electic Boogaloo.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:21 a.m. CST

    Is this a problem?

    by Shermdawg

Tony's just a rich drunk in armor. And since it's gonna be cg'd out the ying yang, all he's gotta worry about is teh booze. Cast him as Stark. No big deal. Hell, if I was in charge of a X-men reboot, I'd make Xavier black.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:26 a.m. CST

    Tony Stark

    by FearlessJay

Having actually finished the article... *nod to Petro45* if they had gone that way, I will agree that Howard would make an interesting Stark, but I think fans would be divided on it. Heck, who am I kidding. No matter who they cast the fans will be divided.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:32 a.m. CST

Howard is awesome, but not Tony

    by stlfilmwire

Howard would be fine as Stark's pal. I'd also love to see him suit up and assist Iron Man. Maybe a good excuse to put another version of the suit up on the screen... which would be great.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:33 a.m. CST

    by Cash Bailey

I've don't know a single thing about this comic but to see Terrence Howard taking the lead in a big movie can only ever be a good thing.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:48 a.m. CST

    Billy Crudup is too short.

    by Rant Breath

He's not action hero material unless you're casting Puck from Alpha Flight. Mark Ruffalo is a better choice.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:53 a.m. CST

Fits in Jim Rhodes' spot aka War Machine

    by bodyslam911

But as Stark it would be stupid, then let's cast Dustin Diamond as the Black Panther.

McGsStepson,we know. At least some of us. :P

    by Shermdawg

Others are just tossing around the idea if he was casted as Tony. (And why not?) Frankly, they should cast him as Tony, and Jamie Foxx as Rhodes.

Iron Man: actor should be older than Tobey's Spiderman

Ryan Reynolds no! He is Hawkeye more than anyone else or the flash. I don't think Terrence could nail it ike we want him to but it would be enjoyable to watch. tom Cruise 5 years age would have been the best choice, but now I am not so sure anyone would want him in that role. Howard should be doing more than black sidekicks

    by dr_buggerlugs

The man got talent and after Crash and Hustle & Flow, he's in a prime position to try and find some good lead roles in order to make a real attempt at Denzel's throne rather than playing second fiddle as the 'mesa black sidekick' part. If they have any real balls, cast him as Stark - I was actually digging that idea at the beginning of the article.

    by Pirate_King

I've not seen Howard in anything but from his Hustle/Crash pedigree it does seem like Monica's-Rich-Boyfiend/Mikey-From-Swingers is on the right track. If you ask me, the perfect Iron Man needs to have that womanising charm, that Errol Flynn-esque look, the build to not make the armour be too bulky, and be a decent actor to boot. So, Jude Law anyone?

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 9:09 a.m. CST

Howard is a good choice for Stark.

    by Nice Marmot

    Duncan as Kingpin still sucks.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 9:09 a.m. CST

They should CGI in Clark Gable as Stark!!

    by Borgnine JR

And cast Henry Simmons as Luke Cage. He's a decent actor and has the intimidation factor.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 9:10 a.m. CST

Cast Timothy Olyphant as Tony Stark

    by Starkers

Timothy Olyphant is the right age (38), well known from supporting roles in movies and as one of the leads of Deadwood, and most importantly he can pull off the 'stach. He can act subdued, yet with a certain rage bubbling just underneath (Deadwood) , as well as crazy over the top insanity (The Girl next Door")

I Howard would be a great Tony Stark.

    by Orbots Commander

The Tony Stark character, other than his alcoholism, is a pretty generic billionaire playboy and engineering genius. I don't think it would be a huge issue with fanboys if a great African American actor was cast in the role. Terrence Howard fits that to a 'T'. HUSTLE AND FLOW was awesome.

Better not be iron man... it's like casting halle berry

    by Spiderhulk

as catwoman for crying out loud....... although I like the idea of him being james rhodes...... listen hollywood I'm all for affirmative action, and getting out as many opportunities as possible for minorities in hollywood... but when it comes to comics, switching the colour of famous icons that have been around a century doesn't cut the bill. CATWOMAN is not black. They almost casted lois lane with beyonce..... thank god that was passed up. I dont mind kingpin so much as a black guy in daredevil, but that's because I never really paid too much attention to his character in the comic books, plus its hard to find a huge white guy that isn't some kind of steroid freak body builder/porn star.

    by Spiderhulk

he played howard hughes!!!! I mean casting iron man as terrance howard to me, is like what if scorceses had cast terrance howard as howard hughes in The aviator...... would it have been as highly acclaimed as it is now? or would everyone have though he was colour blind....... To me comic book characters are real, when you do a comic book movie your essentially doing a biopic of these peoples lives.... I dont care if there's not enough black comic book characters out there... I think there is though, look at storm, blade, rhodes, spawn etc.... the list goes on dudes, no need to make iron man black,... just doesn't fit the bill...... although i do like the idea of a leo and terrance howard team up.

    by Pirate_King

There's a big difference between "casting young" and NOT casting someone too old- Matt Damon as Peter Parker? Matt "32 years old in 2002" Damon as Peter "High School Student" Parker? No disrespect to you but that simply wouldn't have worked (except, you know, in Grease...). And Viggo's pushing 50, so again he's that bit too old. Someone in their mid- to late-30's is the age range you're looking for for Stark- young enough to still be an action hero and a womaniser, old enough to be beleivable as a CEO. Plus, you throw in the "boy genius" thing from the Ultimate storyline, and you've got a believable age-range. And as for Kingpin, I've said it before and I'll say it again - Meatloaf.

Terrance as Warmachine will outshine the lead actor!

    by ganymede2010

That's why I think Howard will be Tony Stark. After watching Hustle and flow I was fucking sold on Howard. He has the looks, remarkable talent, and versatility to pull off the role. Howard steals every fucking scene he's been in over the last few years. So I can't imagine someone outshining him in the lead role. Casting him as Rhodes is the logical choice. But it doesn't make sense to cast one of the best young actors in the game as a sidekick.

It was a given that Affleck would be horrible. Colin Ferrel was great as Bullseye. I believe the movie could have been salvaged with a good "Kingpin". He is a great villian. Duncan didn't have a clue as to who the Kingpin was. He should have had perfect diction. His strength and speed should have been surprising.

    not a bad casting choice

    by mister nar

first, howard is half black and half white and outside of the timothy olyphant idea...i can't think of a better casting. secondly, howard takes every role seriously and always brings an amazing performance...even if the movie he is in is trash. tony stark is a genius and a hero, but he is also very smooth yet arrogant, and manipulative...he is very flawed which makes him sympathetic. howard is one of the few actors that can do all of that. people saying he shouldn't be cased because he is a shade too dark need to go take a look at some iron man comics and see how much more darker tony stark's skin is compared to his fellow avengers.

    by Orbots Commander

with Terrence Howard in the movie, he'll outshine the lead actor. He wouldn't just outshine Olyphant, he'd figuratively shove him off the screen in every scene. It's a given. If Howard is Jim Rhodes, then the only way they can go with Tony Stark is to cast somebody like Tom Cruise or another big name. Otherwise, Favreau should just have Howard be Tony Stark.

    Marvel/DC "Racism"

    by MCVamp

Spiderhulk, your post above confuses me a bit. You say DC is a bit racist compared to Marvel and i don't see it, really. If you mean the movies, all they've done is recast the Kingpin. If you mean the comics, the track record is about the same. There is diversity creeping around the edges of both companies, but of course you can't make Superman or Wolverine Asian or Cuban all of a sudden. DC DID have VIBE, however, a very stereotypical Latino superhero who spoke like Rita Moreno in West Side Story "Jes man, joo right." Then again, Luke Cage used to run around in a yellow disco shirt and call people "jive-turkey." Either way, things have gotten a little more colorful. There's a new Asian Atom, a new Latino Blue Beetle, Luke Cage is now realistically written, and even the Chinese Radioactive Man gets a little more respect thanks to the Thunderbolts. Now if only the next Robin is half-Cuban/half-Kazhakstani...

Plus, we know Dillon can work with Terrance. They helped make the ridiculously contrived and "untrue" Crash a hit with critics. Why Terrence Howard will be Rhodey and not Stark

    by Ye Not Guilty

First of all, I think Terrence Howard would make an interesting choice as Stark, and I could see him pulling it off. But it won't happen for several reasons. First of all, as far as Hollywood studio execs are concerned, there is only one black leading man who can open a film to over $20 million, and that is Denzel Washington. The suits are convinced, rightly or wrongly, that general audiences won't turn out to see a film where the lead is played by a black man other than Denzel. Second, and this kind of plays back into the first concern, is that this film probably needs to open at at least $24 million or so. It's all about the opening weekend, baby. Terrence Howard is a fine actor, but he doesn't have the star power to open a film to $24 million by himself. So, Howard will be offered Rhodey, which should also be a good choice, and the role of Stark will go to some actor between 28-36 or so who isn't a huge star, but who has enough "Q" rating to open a film to between $20-30 million, and whose salary will fit within the film's budget. There are probably about a dozen or so actors Favs is looking at that fit that description. I wonder if Brandon Routh is available. He's a little young but would probably be affordable.

This race issue in comic movies is a joke, guys...

    by Childe Roland

...seriously. First off, Howard is no darker than I am right now and - despite what my racist dad might say about that being a result of my mom's African tainted Italian blood (and Stark's Italian, by the by) - that really has more to do with the natural variance of skin tones in individuals of the same "race" (stupid fucking word to continue using, by the way, considering we're all of the same fucking race -- human -- last time I checked) than where my ancestors claim they hail from (for example, my dad's own mom is dark complected thanks to the Mongolian conquest of eastern Europe in the 13th century, also responsible for the almond-shape of her and my eyes). Point being, if you guys are still really hung up on the race of a character who isn't specifically written to address a race issue (Captain America, for example, was written blue eyed and blonde haired as much to send a message to the Aryan supremacist Nazi movement as anything else), then there are far more educational films you should be watching than Iron Man and Daredevil. Let it go, fellas. None of you is "pure" anything unless you were grown in a lab.

    Terrance Howard better be Stark

    by antonphd

cause otherwise they are going to have to find one bad ass motherfucker to not get completely outshined by Terrance. Good luck. Better pay whatever it takes to get a Clive Owen or someone of that caliber. No way any of the young guys can stack up to Terrance. Well, actually, Matthew Fox could, if you have Terrance put on the breaks a bit. Terrance is just to real. And he can be magnetic and real at the same time. It's hard not to outshine anyone who can't do that around you. Tom Cruise would NOT do well with Terrance in a supporting role. He wouldn't stand up to Terrance. Tom's too 2 dimensional. You have to put older(thus non-competitive) or less charasmatic people with Tom or he can't comptete. I say get Matthew Fox if Terrance isn't Stark. This Is Funny

    by AlabamaBaron

While I myself dont find Terrence Howard as Iron Man to be very intriguing. The reasons for him not being so have been down right hilarious. I understand full well the reasons some of our lighter skinned talkbackers do not want to see a black Tony Starks. Hell he could have been one of your favorite characters as a kid. Even better the character of Tony Starks is italian, just for the sake of continuity you might like him to stay italian, thats cool. but some shit is just down right laughable. "I dont care if there's not enough black comic book characters out there... I think there is though, look at storm, blade, rhodes, spawn etc.... the list goes on dudes". YEAH RIGHT you named like four people and couldnt come up with another one. Lets see if I can name a few "white" comic book characters. ummhh...Cyclops, Gambit, Shadowkat, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Iceman, Angel, Rouge you get the point. AND THESE ARE JUST X-MEN CHARACTERS. Thats cool. I'm not saying the X-Men need to look like a negro league baseball team. I'm just proving my point. Another good one. "then let's cast Dustin Diamond as the Black Panther". I think we can all agree that Iron Man is a much more recognizable character than The Black Panther. But do you really think that the skies will fall or the sea will rise, just because Howard is Iron Man. As far as casting Dustin Diamond as the black panther. I would be cool with that, if it didnt knock the number of black superheroes down to like 4(sarcastically speaking). I mean damn cant one black person be the MAIN focus of a superhero film. I know Catwoman was bad. but last I checked Halle Berry was a pretty good actress, she even has an oscar, and last I checked not everyone had one of those. And I dont blame the movie entirely on her. To reiterate I dont agree with Howard being cast as Starks(or for that matter Rhodes). I'm just saying that some of the shit I hear on these talkbacks is getting pretty old. And wether Iron Man is Howard or not, we should be worried about wether the movie is good. Then Iron Man being black

except the good ones, you know who you are. But Rhodes? There's no frickin need for him in the movie. And besides, Howard would be PERFECT for Tony Stark. Put the racism aside, and it IS racism. The same shit Michael Clarke Duncan had to deal with when he was one of the good things about that damned Daredevil movie. But noooo, you pack of snivelly little whinebags couldn't handle ethnic diversity sneaking into the whitebreat superhero world, and you disguise your blatant BLATANT racism by pretending you're protecting the "integrity" of the characters. Why the hell couldn't Tony Stark be black? The best actor for the role, and this is a damned good actor. I'd rather see him in the role than Ryan Reynolds/Tom Cruise/etc.

Ralph Fiennes or ... PETER GALLAGHER!!!

    by rightarm4Rosario

Ralph Fiennes could pull off the troubled man striving to find the light - I think his characters in the Constant Gardener or the English Patient show that he can portray something of a dick that you still empathize with for some reason ... On the other hand, the COOLEST CASTING EVER would be PETER GALLAGHER as TONY STARK. Can you imagine Gallagher, drunk as hell, piloting a high-tech suit of armor over the streets of America? That's worth 9 bucks in my book. Hell, $15 in LA or NY!!! And if you cast Gallagher as Stark, you can't go with Terrence Howard as James Rhodes, as he would, indeed, blow Gallagher out of the water, and thus, ruin a fine film. I think maybe Vhing Rhames would be a better Rhodey for the film I'm thinking of. He did a good job as a sidekick to the midget Tom Cruise, who, despite his insanity (or perhaps because of it), would still be a solid Stark.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 6:32 p.m. CST

Open Letter To John Favreau And Marvel!!!

    by MetalWater

Wow!!! You guys are damn serious at casting!!! I congratulate you in your efforts to go for quality actors here, a brave choice!!! If this is a omen of things to come, this, and other future Marvel movies are going to continue to smash the box office. I've been waiting for a truly smart film based on a comic book character...a mix of great actors, great producers, a great script, a great cinematographer, a great editor and of course, a great director. A sort of, Citizen Kane, Raiders Of The Lost Ark...or Gone With The Wind of super hero films in terms of sweeping epic scope and ambition. Hopefully this will be that movie, if only in respect to feel and tone. Perhaps, the first super hero film that would be seriously considered for an Academy Award...for best picture. That's where these movies should be deliver a watershed moment. That's where Mario Puzo was aiming with the first was his attempt to create the Godfather of super hero films...and he came damn near close to fully achieving that goal!!!

    Dustin Diamond / Tarantino?

    by rightarm4Rosario

Funny you mention Dustin Diamond, Omar - I've always thought that it would be cool for Tarantino to take a slew of has-beens and make a kickass movie. If anyone could do it, it would be QT. And QT has kind of made a habit of giving plumb roles to the likes of John Travolta, Robert Forster, David Carradine, Darryl Hannah and others who've fallen somewhat off the scene ; it would be interesting to see him tackle a project with the likes of Dustin Diamond, Scott Baio, Carmen Electra, Dennis Rodman, Rhonda Shear, Dean Cain, and James Van Der Beek. In the interests of fairness, let me include some more females in the potential QT franchise flick : Shannon Elizabeth, Shannen Doherty, Elizabeth Berkeley, Tori Spelling, Omarosa, Kathie Lee Gifford. ... Oh shit! Even Quentin couldn't save the flushable product which would emerge from such a collaboration. Maybe if he did it as a TROMA film, there would be hope ...

In terms of the dynamic of the Stark/Rhodes

    by superninja

relationship, I'm not sure how much of it really had to do with race issues. They worked very well together until Rhodes was effected negatively by the armor. Regardless, it is that Tony comes from privilege and Jim does not, and this does not require a race formula. Anyway, I say Howard for Stark.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 6:49 p.m. CST

No, Duncan was bad in the DD movie.

    by Spiderhulk

Seriously. Wtf have you been smoking? IRON MAN is not black. The end. How else can I put this? Okay maybe to make a little easier for you to understand i'll cite some examples. George bush is a white man. Chris Rock is a black man. Jim Carey is a white man. Barok Obama is a black man. The sky is blue. The grass is green. etc etc etc...... WTF DO WE HAVE to change the colour of a comic book character just because someone thinks Terrance Howard is a great actor. Okay he's a great actor. I understand, but he's a different colour than IRON MAN in the comic. It's like having Denzel Washington cast in a biopic as BILL CLINTON in the main role. DENZEL WASHINGTON is a superb actor! he's great, and I enjoy his movies. Can he play Bill Clinton without making everyone go HUH? WTF? That's not bill? NO HE CANT... Further example, ... would you have Danny Devito playing the flash? Would you have Bryce Dallas Howard playing Gwen Stacey AS A RED HEAD? Would you have Scarlett Johannson as SuperMAN!? SEriously... no racism... just eyeballs.

    If They Do

    by AlabamaBaron

If they do cast Terrence Howard as Iron Man, I hope they give the film the same kinda budget as they would if he were played by Tom Cruise or Leo Dicaprio(Who is my choice) I believe it will take at least $120-175 million to make the movie as grandiose as it should be. And i'm afraid they wont do that for Howard out of fear that it wont gross as much with him in the lead role.

    Reality Check

    by AlabamaBaron

"Iron Man is not black, the end." LOL, Last time I checked Iron Man was a fictional character. or to sum it up HE DOSENT EXSIST. just on the basis of that alone it would seem to me that anyone could play him. Of course Denzel Washington couldnt play Bill Clinton. You know why?. Bill Clinton is a real person. IN REALITY Bill Clinton is white. we are talking about two different entities all together. What I think is great about Iron Man he is not a very notable character. Poll 100 AVERAGE people and only about 20 will even know who you are talking about. that gives him amazing flexibility as far as casting goes.

"The bad guy is going to be the Mandarin."

    by superninja

Say it with me, anchorite: THE MANDARIN. Then he notes the casting breakdown for an Asian man in his mid-30s. He says they may want to explore the Rhodes/War Machine storyline "eventually". The includes Stane and Rhodes in the supporting cast. Meaning, there may be setup for War Machine. But Mandarin is the villain. The other evildoer is clearly Stane.

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 7:26 p.m. CST

I get why people don't want Howard as Stark.

    by superninja

It doesn't make them racist. Tony has always been a white guy in the comics. There is just something about Howard that has the right vibe that screams Tony to me, to the point that I think everyone should jump all over it! :) He is also an outstanding actor. Admittedly, Iron Man is not my favorite character, but I do like him. And I feel playing Tony is more about having an air of privilege than a skin color.

Honest to the source material? So I guess a different race playing Tony Stark makes him less of a man... Why must Tony Stark only be cast as a WHITE guy? Can only a WHITE guy portray a rich, alcoholic engineer? Am I missing something about him fighting for WHITE individuals civil rights? Did he only go to a WHITE only University where he learned about various engineering and mechanical technologies? If there's nothing about the essense of the character that requires a WHITE-Anglo saxon character as the lead why through a hissy fit if a BLACK guy is Tony Stark?

Howard would be good in this part I think, although he always looks like he's stepped out of some 1940s boxing movie to me. I don't know why. And as far as Kingpin goes - I've heard people bitching about that casting for ages but I don't recall anyone actually putting forward an alternative. Admittedly I've skipped a lot of this TB - but is there a white guy (or any other race) working in movies who is such a big, imposing fucker? And doesn't look like a WWE wrestler?

Terrance Howard And Casting Iron Man

    by Barron34

Terrance Howard is a good actor and would make an excellent James Rhodes. I have to strongly disagree with Quint and anyone who thinks that a black man, or anyone other than a whiite male, should be cast as Tony Stark. Part of the key to Stark's character is that he is part of the corporate, white, conservative business elite that tends to rule the economy and politics of America and the world. Part of what makes Stark heroic is that, even though he could just give in and be a corporate, white asshole and tell the world to fuck itself, instead he puts on this armor and goes out into the world to fight (literally and figuratively), for his version of truth, justice, and the American way (which in Stark's world means fighting crazy, destructive, evil corporate and technological villains who are bent on killing people, destroying property, and destabilizing the global balance). I liked Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin, because the Kingpin is believable as either a black man or a white man. The race of the Kingpin is not critical to the character. Stark, on the other hand, is sort of a Republican superhero. To make him something other than a privelaged white male would undercut his character fatally, and would be a terribly misguided act of political correctness.

Tyrese? He's got no audience!!! And yes, I know The Transformers will bring in alot of least initially...still, I don't want to see Tyrese in anything!!! However, Chiewtel Ejiofor and Terence Howard are special stand out actors...and I'm talking elite!!! Omar of Cuba Gooding Jr. is another great one...just check out his performance in John Singleton's Baby Boy...the guy is a scene stealer!!! And Chiwetel Ejiofor dominated Serenity...what a commander presence...not that his co-star Nathan Fillion was chopped liver...both men were stand outs!!! Certainly Nathan should be in the running to play Tony Stark...and would deliver a great performance!!! I'm just wondering if the producers want a star in that role or not. Speaking of great actors, i would really love seeing Jodie Foster in this movie...she's not only an elite actor, but she can open a movie like no one in her generation!!! More On Casting

    by Barron34

Another thing point about the Stark character is that often he IS that guy: the selfish rich white fuck who doesn't give a damn about anything other than cars, jets, money, women, and booze. This is one of the keys to Marvel superheroes: they are flawed human beings. Peter Parker is a shy, conflicted guy who struggles to do whats right (with great power comes great responsibility) even though his personal life often suffers. Tony Stark is a rich white guy that can be a jerk, but he fights his way out of the bottle and puts his life on the line to fight bad guys when he could just hang it up and enjoy his money and his provelages

I CAN NAME 20 WHITE ONES... but a black one doesn't exist unless it's a warlord in africa and even then that's pushing it. I'm not a racist.....

    by Spiderhulk

I think that Terrance Howard might be a good Iron Man. He's a great actor. He might even inspire some young black kids that have gotten a crummy deal in life by being marginalized in a terrible country like America with a history of slaves, glass ceilings, revolving prison systems, and little assistance. It might make the difference between a black kid choosing joining a gang or dreaming about becomming a scientist with the aspiration to cure cancer (ie if the audience empathizes with Tony Stark's Brain Tumour/cancer.. ultimate storyline rather than shrapnel one) I really like that idea. It also gives a great superhero role to a great black actor (blade was okay, but it doesn't have the potential that Iron Man has) The thing is is you'd have to make rhodes white though. There has to be that dichotomy in place. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to pull in the redneck white audience from alabama. The thing is though is that I really like the idea of Terrance Howard playing Iron Man, and think it has the potential to create a great African American Iconic hero in cinema but the dollar signs probably won't add up because there are people in alabama, north carolina, south carolina, texas, etc that want their blue eyes, blond hair vanilla cream coloured superman. It's a shame but the majority of people living in America are white. That's why newspapers are written with that demographic in mind. I'm not saying I agree... I just know that all the time the news ignores talking about the death and rape of a black woman in favour of some runaway bride, truscott, etc stuff. If you're going to make Iron Man black you have to make the movie damn good (Terrance Howard is a kiler actor... but he's only one pillar of support to a film) a damn good rocket sure fire film to pull in all the rednecks, and hillbillies and so that they make a profit off this movie so we can see more of Iron Man.

    This is a damn shame

    by glodene

I can't believe that a Half-black & half-white man being cast as a Rich industrialist/Scientist could bring out so much fear and insecurities out of some of you white (geeky) mutha-fuckas. Baron34, have you ever heard of Richard Parsons? He's a lowly black guy who's the CEO of AOL/TimeWarners..Is that corporate enough for you...Btw, when did enjoying a comicbook based movie become predicated on race? Shit people, over ninety-five percent of all Hollywood productions are predominately (if not all) white. Y'all act as if one production cast an ethnic actor (who's half-white) in a leading role will bring about the apocalypse or something. "Gee Whillakers Biff! If Jon Favreau cast that Mullato as Tony Stark, there won't be a future for pure white male actors anymore." Sieg Hiel Indeed!

Regardless of who plays the lead, we need Rosario Dawson as Pepper Potts. That being said, this film also needs a dose of full-frontal nudity ...

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 11:16 p.m. CST

    Seriously ...

    by rightarm4Rosario

I think someone brought it up on a previous Iron Man talkback, but it bears saying again: This film had BETTER (at some point) include the Ozzy/Sabbath "Iron Man" tune ... Come on, now!! How can you not have that song at some point in the film. Perhaps it would be cheesy during a montage or climactic sequence, but if it were simply used during a sequence with Tony Stark rolling up in a limo to a charity event or something, it would be great. And how about Orson Scott Card? His work on the comic miniseries a year or two back was fantastic! Any chance of bringing him on board for some script-tweaking? Anyone? Anyone??

  • Aug. 1, 2006, 11:20 p.m. CST

Race should not be an issue

    by rightarm4Rosario

Look guys, the big problem not being discussed here has nothing to do with race. It has to do with the quality of current and future Comic-Based films. For every "Ghost World" or "Spider-Man," we get a "Daredevil" or some half-hearted crap like "Fantastic Four." Both of those films had moments, but please -! I think Favreau will at least try to please the fans, try to make a decent film - which is more than can be said for some of the recent product from Marvel. Yeah, Favreau was in "Daredevil." And for my money, he was one of the best parts of that film. Terrence Howard won't make or break this film. I understand what some of the hardcore fanboys are saying when they say they want a "white" tony stark. But the truth of the matter is that 99.9% of them will flock to an Iron Man film regardless of who is cast as ole' shellhead. Howard would be an interesting choice. Matthew Fox wouldn't be bad either. I'm not sold on Nathan Fillion, although maybe they should cast HIM in the next Indiana Jones flick. Hell - come to think of it, I'd like to see Terrence Howard as Indiana Jones. THAT would be pretty kickass. Better than him as Stark, actually. As for another idea : Has anyone here seen THE MATADOR? For a drunken shell of a man (who can still periodically kick ass) look no further than Pierce Brosnan!! Hey, Timothy Dalton was rumored to be in the running for Stark way-back-when - so why not BROSNAN?

Because the mainstream wants to see the suit in action and f/x scenes, even though fanboys would prefer the atypical rich white guy as Stark. Granted, I agree that Howard could do it, as he is versatile enough to do so, but I think this may be one of those instances where they would be casting a black actor just for the sake of it, and not because he honestly fits the role.

And this is from somebody who grew up in Queens and Brooklyn, but now live out in Leave It to Beaver Land, Nassau County, N.Y. (*Hint: Alec Baldwin's and Jerry Sienfeld's old home town) I still commute to work in Manhattan, but maybe NYC is considered more of an 'international' city for commerce and business which could be why you see all types and varieties of people here with very little if any tension at all.

Orbots, my theory on this is that LA is

    by superninja

largely balkanized. Granted, people tend to self-segregate anyway, and we have large immigrant populations, but LA is so spread out that people literally can avoid other races and cultures if they so choose. New York just doesn't have the square footage to accomodate that.

  • Aug. 2, 2006, 1:16 p.m. CST

    Yes, but I wasn't a conservative when I moved

    by superninja

to LA, anchorite. Going back to Austin in the last couple of years, the "Keep Austin Weird" mantra has gotten rather literal for my tastes. But you know, living in LA probably helped in my becoming a conservative, so I'm grateful for it. In regards to balkanization, people have been predicting for years now that the Mexicans and Blacks are going to have a real throw down. I worked with a church that was started to facilitate racial reconciliation in poorer neighborhoods, and the tension between these two groups is palpable.

by Childe Roland;ll see I gave no "stamp." I said Barron's was the best argument anyone in this talkback had made for not casting a black Stark (given the others we heard, that really isn't a ringing endorsement). And I said it wasn't a bulletproof argument (even pointing out one of the obvious chinks in the proverbial armor). You need to chill out and stop looking for anti-capitalist propaganda in my opinions (without capitalism, I wouldn't have a job and couldn't afford to maintain the very comfortable lifestyle my family enjoys). We all serve the corporate machine in one way or another. The trick is to try and do a little good within that system to ensure it maintains some heart and soul. You can either be a cog or a conscience...your choice. If that view seems narrow to you, I really can't do much more for you.

you see very little of it, other than the riots in France of course. I visit my parents annually who are retired in a sea-side touristy community on a Greek island. Anyway going through Athens' Venizelos International Airport and knowing something of Athens itself, there is a quite disparate amount of various Europeans and many from the Middle East and North Africa who arrive there to work due to the expanding economy. There is some occasional ethnic/racial tension, but generally nothing where it would be a huge societal problem. Of course, once you get to the islands, it's virtually impossible to stay mad at ANYone or ANYthing: beatiful women, sunkissed beaches, laid back lifestyle, flowing drinks, beautiful women....

But that tends to peter out after the frat boy stage. The biggest tensions between the two now have more to do with the EU entry of Turkey; the Greeks, Germans, and French aren't crazy about the idea. The British, Poles and others are in favor. And of course the whole Cyprus thing.

I know how to write properly, and I know how to express myself creatively with proper diction. When I'm posting on AICN I don't take grammer into account because I'm just blowing off steam about hollywood projects. I guess you could say I was an aspiring film geek in high school but gave it up to pursue a much more safe and realistic avenue of employment. If my 'stream of conciousness' and 'diarrhea of the mouth' bothers you then don't read my posts. As I said before this isn't a university studies forum where we are to discuss many topics surrounding academics. So fuck off with the grammer speech. I like movies, you like movies, THE END. policy. In fact, during WWII, the Greek government of the time secretly took in Jewish refugees escaping from the Nazis. That's why in certain parts of Greece you'll find Jewish communities or from Jewish-descent. There are as many Greek-Americans, it is estimated, as there is in all of Greece, but there is an anti-U.S. strain, largely due to Lyndon Johnson and the Cold War. Short history: After WWII, the Greek government, a parliamentary one like Britain's, called for the closure of strategic United States naval bases. Now this was at the height of the Cold War in the 50s and 60s. With CIA backing, members of the Greek military carried out a bloodless coup, pushed aside the the Prime Minister and closed the Parliament. They kept the naval bases, went on a McArthey type communist witch hunt and imprisoned many political opposition members. Under international and domestic pressure the Colonels as they were called, stepped aside and handed power back to a Parliamentary government. The Greeks never forgave Johnson or the U.S. for that.

A majority of people still make a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes after going through the rigours of high school and University. There's a feeling of lethargy within the content of many people's writing and without the help of a spell/grammar check on their word processors they become lazy. There seems to be a reliance on these programs to correct our spelling and grammar all the time. When I'm paying close attention to the grammar in the newspapers I always notice a few spelling mistakes and they HAVE spellchecks.

They all think they're going to be the next Aronofsky, Scorsese, Kubrick, Spielberg, Cameron, etc... You don't see me telling people I'm going to be the next Durkheim, Watson, Henry David Thoreau, Ignatieff, Bentham, etc... Further, they talk about film too much through an objective medium (at least from my experience)Even a few law students, and history students see the their field within a subjective framework sometimes.

    by blackwood

I used to live in Kingston - when I was applying to Universities Queens offered me a shitload to go there. And I said no. You know why? Because Queens University is full of douche - it is the douche capital of South Eastern Ontario, and I can say with all confidence every single person I've met who has gone to Queens is a complete fucking write-off when it comes to being a free-thinking, useful person. Also if "There's a feeling of lethargy within the content of many people's writing" is what passes for English at Queens... well, that proves the point all the more. Keep reaching for that rainbow, smart guy. Oh, and as a faggot, I hereby give license to anyone in this TB to use my people for the sake of tearing you down.

Always up for some good conversation. Even in an Iron Man movie talk-back. As far as myself and my extended family-- all Greeks or of Greek descent in case you haven't guessed--not an anti-semite among us. I hate to use the "some of my best friends are..." line, but it's true. Went to a Jewish wedding about a month ago and was in the groom's wedding party. It was up in New Rochelle, near Westchester, NY. Did the whole chair lifting thing with the bride and groom and their parents. Oy, my back! Anyway, I guess racism and anti-semitism probably exists among some ethnic Greeks, but about as much as any ethnic population group. I can't throw any statistics with averages or median numbers at you, but it's only from my unscientific personal encounters.

I'm just surrprised so many people are so worked-up about my man in the Tony Stark role when in the goddamn article Quint states "Terrence Howard was offered the role of James Rhodes, good friend to Tony Stark and future bearer of the armor and IRON MAN identity. Enough with the hand-wringing. Racism is wrong. Some of the above people arguing in a crazy forceful way are spouting racism. Some are just purist fanboys who, as in the case of the organic web-shooters, don't want any detail changed when it comes to their beloved comics. I'm fairly certain that 99% of people here, despite the rhetoric, would be happy with WHOEVER plays the role of Stark, so long as Favreau and the creative team behind the film, does a good job. Now, let's get on with the casting. With Rosario already cast as "Tonya Stark," we need a "Janine Rhodes." I hereby nominate Carla Gugino as "Rhodey" for this film. Given this gender inversion, one can only hope that we see James Woods cast as Pepper Potts.

    Race And Privelage

    by Barron34

My point about Stark is that part of his character is that he is a privaleged white guy, sort of a Republican superhero. That is all. It is wrong-headed to assume that this implies that a black man can't be a scientist or a CEO: many are. I don't know where people got that idea from. The point is, if a black man is wealthy or successful, it is less likely the result of privelage or inheritance than hard work, skill, and so on. Personally, I am not a conservative, but I recognize that the Stark character sort of is one, and should be portrayed as such. While there are black guys who are conservatives (Thomas Sowell, Alan Keyes, etc), they seem to be kind of unique exceptions rather than typical archetypes. Making Stark other than a privelaged white guy would sort of undercut his character. That is all. *****As far as race making a difference regarding capacity for science, engineering, etc: that also is ridiculous. My previous family physician was a black man with an M.D./PhD., for example. Any of you naysayers out there have either an M.D., PhD., or both? Didn't think so. The only reason that a black person might have difficulty pursuing such careers and degrees is that there is a long history of racism and inequality here in America and elsewhere, and that many black kids start out with fewer educational and economic opportunities than many of their white counter-parts. But, as some have pointed out, this inequality is being reduced more and more as the statistics are becoming more balanced. This is the result of decades of effort to level the playing field in America. *****The point about Stark is that he acts heroic IN SPITE of being a rich white guy or a jerk. Making him non-white would change something basic about the character. Would fans want to see a Black Panther who was Asian, or a Luke Cage who was Russian? No, I don't think so. I also don't think that pointing these things out should immediately tag anyone as racist. Anyway, enough of this. We are in danger of beating a dead horse.

    For Anchorite

    by AlabamaBaron

In all honesty ANCHORITE, you made some terrible points, WHITE HISTORY MONTH, LOL. You mean all the months besides February aren't good enough. W.E.T. a white telivision network, LOL, what are CBS,FOX,WGN,TBS,THE FAMILY CHANNEL,USA,LIFETIME,A&E,AMC,TNT, E!,FX,SCI-FI,SOAPNET,NOGGIN,MTV,VH1..I'll be real, to a certain degree each of those channels have some kind of "black" programming. But we also know that the majority of those stations show predominately "white" programming. If you really want to get deeper into the matter I dont consider B.E.T. to be "black television". sure it has black people on it. but it is owned by a white man(Bob Johnson sold it to Viacom)and even before then it was just a way to inforce racial sterotypes and stupidity(I think of it in the same vain as hitler making schools that enforced nazism)Like I said before the faces are black, but last time I checked I didnt know many guyd that had hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry and million dollar cars parked outside of there mansions. THAT IS NOT HOW THE MAJORITY OF BLACK PEOPLE LIVE, HELL ANY RACE FOR THAT MATTER. You are obviously blind to the fact that whites also had a four hundred year head start. (I know, I know, thats in the past right. But lets see how that effects black people to this day). Havent most major businessess/corportations that are established been in business for well over a hundred years in some cases hundreds of years. Businesses such as BELLSOUTH(1879),Ford Motors(1916),Phillip Morris(1860),Coca-Cola(1887), Exxon(1899),American Express(1850),General Mills(1856),Sears(1893),Staple Cotton(1921)...I can go on and on. most MAJOR companies were founded before blacks even had the same rights as whites. Therefore they couldnt be owned by blacks..(I wonder what all this has to do with now). Most people would mark the ending of the civil rights area at around 1968. before this point in history it was rare for black schools(And still rare)to be on equal terms as far as eductional standards go. Thats only 38 years ago. So it has been only 38 years since blacks and white have been getting the roughly the same education.(Where is He going with this)Lets look at it from an economic standpoint, Lets say one race of people have been in charge(strictly speaking economically) for about 200 yrs. While another race could only begin to buy businesses about 40yrs ago. who would have the most money?(per capita, per-person. white and black)Lets not forget that a black business(like most)would probably need a loan from a bank to get started. Well the owners of said banks are probably white. and for a certain period of time you would NOT have gotten that loan. There are other reasons as well. I said earlier that education wise 1968 is the mark for everybody to been on the same terms. Lets be honest, White public schools are not the same as black public schools. Books are older, Equipment is hand me down,The buildings themselves are lackluster and not conducive for learning. The Funding is worse..You know what Fuck It. I'm sick of typing, You get the point.

    Race and Iron Man

    by AlabamaBaron

The difference between the Black Panther being white and Iron Man being black is this...NOBODY knows who the Black Panther is(sure 1 out of every 100 people) double for luke cage. so they arent important enough to have to change. Hell if you made Tom Cruise The Black Panther, people would just think he's some rip-off of Batman. By making Iron Man black you make a statement. people know who Iron Man is, it shows a shift in popular culture as well as the popular way of thinking. besides how many black superheroes are there in total(From both universes Marvel & DC) about 15, 20. would it hurt so much to have a major(and Iron man is not really major)character change races. Lord forbid some black child see's the movie and goes "WOW" theres a hero that looks like me, thats not a fucking vampire.,. Hell i'm not against John Leguizamo playing Iron Man or anybody else for that matter. So why does it seem to matter so much to most.

    Racism in the US

    by antonphd

Don't forget, while there was racism from every race that originally came to the US or was already here, the Africans were the only race to be forcibly brought here and made slaves. All of the skeptics about afirmative action are historically ignorant dumbasses. If you know any history, you know how long it takes for any race to overcome slavery. A couple hundred years is nothing in the scope of time it takes. It will be the fastest recovery in history, but it's not a quick process.

    by Immortal_Fish

Wilson could be quite good in the role. Not denying that. But I'm thinking of a different Owen. Not anything-else-but-Behind-Enemy-Lines-version-Owen-Wilson, but the actual Behind-Enemy-Lines-version-Owen-Wilson. He can convincingly and simultaneously pull off arrogance, hubris, and humanity. He's perfect. I also think he's the most overexposed one-note actor in the biz today, despite his untapped potential. Honestly, I can't stand him. Which is exactly where I'm going with this. Doesn't prevent me from considering him in a final running of sorts at the very least, given his performance in Behind Enemy Lines. Give him time to grow a tee and break out the shoe polish after a buzz cut -- he's Tony Stark in the flesh. Would love to see him act opposite Terrence Howard in a serious role. Make it a post modern yet global Miami Vice and then we'll be cooking with gas.

    by MarkoOhNo

He did a fantastic job in Hart's War and Crash. Good actor. I'd be satisfied with that casting decision. I'm just glad that it's been confirmed that he's not Tony Stark. Not that I give a crap about Iron Man. It's just that, while I agree that there should be WAY more good leading roles in scifi films for minority actors, race is actually a huge detail despite what PC culture tries to pound into everyones' heads. When a character is created, it's created with a specific race & gender in mind. You don't mess with big details on major characters. It robs the essence of who he or she is. It'd be like casting Steven Segal as B.A. Baracus in a movie version of A-Team, or like having a gay-ass truck with flames on the side play Optimus Prime. lol

    Debate over race changes...

    by lettersoftransit

...don't think people had a problem with Duncan being black as the Kingpin so much as they did he wasn't quite right for the part. Duncan plays sympathetic and friendly more than evil, which makes his bad guys interesting. But while the Kingpin of the comics was not cartoonishly evil without any redeeming qualities, he was never sympathetic or friendly. You never got the sense that hwith all his muscles he could crack a smaile. Alicia in the FF movie was also not a problem, cause the actress had a nice quality. But the intro scene suffered greatly from Ben meeting her in a bar instead of under the thumb of an evil father. (blame the under the table payments from the liquor companies who gave fistfuls of cash in exchange for a handful of booze references. Terence Howard might actor enough to play stark, but the fact is the world doesn't have enough black billionaires yet, long alone enough industrial billionaires, to make that play in a film without it feeling like the race issue would be part of the the story. Instead of trying to change the race of white heroes to black, why not put somre emphasis on fast-tracking some of the superheroes that already are black? Static on the WV network has proved most kids will accept a black hero and not think a half-second about it. Increasingly and encouragingly, we have more and more kids who are confused at the concept of racism and have no clue how it exists or why. One way to make more kids like that --aside from having some reali-life black billionaire industrialists -- would be to make a big budget film about a black hero. So polish up that Black Panther script, or that Luke Cage outline, and get something going.

  • Aug. 2, 2006, 11:19 p.m. CST

    by superninja

Black Panther totally hinges on the character being African. I mean, you could cast Charlize Theron, but I think every here gets the idea. Luke Cage's whole persona is wrapped up in a Blaxploitation character. Making him another race would basically miss the whole point of the character. Whereas Tony Stark comes from privilege, and that is the character. Stark is the son of an Italian immigrant who was a self-made man. That could translate to any immigrant.

You really ought to stop pontificating...

    by Childe Roland

...on the race issue, anchorite. You're not coming off well at all. How can you completely discount hundreds of years of oppression when discussing the current state of African Americans and what they might or might not be entitled to in this thread, but beat the drum loudly on the subject of Jewish oppression and persecution every time the question of how much support the U.S. should be giving Israel comes up? Both are cultures largely displaced by slavery, both find themselves in a constant state of wariness due to both being largely unaccepted by the people of other ethnicities and cultures surrounding them. Why should one group of people get to point to its history in demanding a fair shake in the present while the other should just let the past go?

    Consider this

    by Immortal_Fish

Your spouse or someone in your family needs an urgent operation that few specialize in. The first question you ask is, "We want to have the (BLANK) doctor do the procedure." Chances are quite strong that blank isn't populated with an ethnic title. Unless you're sick to the core, ethnicity is the farthest thing from your mind. I'm thinking that blank is the word 'best'. And things like affirmative action hold potential to exclude a percentage of what would make up the 'best'.

Cultural Lethargy? Uh sir i don't know if you are aware of this, but African Americans (Blacks, Negros, etc) are the only ethnicity in this country that does'nt have a true culture...Now think about the damage that can do to a race of people. Btw, is affirmative action is less of a threat than out-sourcing most jobs to cheaper overseas labor markets. Immortal Fish in the age of HMO's, the whole idea of who's best is moot.

With the exception of the American Indians, every ethnic group has immigrated over here with their culture and traditions intact. Jews, Asians, Italians, etc., suchas Hannukah (sorry if i mispelled it) Bar/Bat Mitzvahs', Latinos: Quincenera's, etc. African Americans (Blacks) was pretty much stripped of their heritage/culture when brought over here as slaves. The closest thing we have is (the condescending) Black History Month. Hell the Asians have Moon Festival, Chinese New Year, etc. So how about execising a little empathy.

You have to take the 'well, let's just take a moment to analyse this and see what comes of it' approach and then you sneak in your racist... fuckhead... ideas.

As the size of government continues to grow

    by superninja

people are going to get pettier and pettier, and race and multiculturalism will become more emphasized to make sure everyone gets pandered to. So the government can make you think you're deciding what they do with your money. They hold the purse strings. I agree largely with everything anchorite says, so I guess that makes me a racist. Whatever. My Native American will start arguing with my Czech American over reparations any day now!

    History of slavery

    by Total_Kneebiter

Just thought I'd throw this out there: First, there were JUST AS MANY Irish slaves as there were black ones. The fact that the Irish ones were called indentured servants doesn't change teh fact that the majority of them died in bondage even though there servitude had technically ended and the debt was paid, but because (like the black slaves) they weren't considered "gentile" they were not granted rights. Just a small point, there. Second, and this is the big one, theres a certain discrepency in the whole slavery thing that I would like to see rectified, but it's not politically correct to discuss. That is to say that EVERY race on earth has at one time enslaved or been enslaved. Additionally, white people (which is as racist as referring to all latin people as brown people) were not the first people to enslave africans. Africans were. When the DUTCH and SPANISH trading ships arrived in africa, they purchased africans who had ALL READY been enslaved by other more powerful tribes in ethiopa. These ethiopians (and other african tribes) spent the next 150 years capturing the members of smaller less powerful tribes which they then sold and traded to the dutch and spanish traders. I only point this out because the word racist keeps getting thrown around with very little in the way of historicity to back up the ideas of the person throwing out the word. Personally, I have my own opinions about it, but for this issue, I'm just pointing out what can be stated as objectively factual. WORD

hop. It also includes soul food, tons of varieties of music including the unique Gospel style and Spirituals, literature, poetry, art, fashion, all unique to the African American experience. Are you saying this does not exist?

    Well actually...

What i meant was something that was spawned from the mother country that is rooted in true African history and tradition as opposed to something less "Pop Cultural"

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 5:15 p.m. CST

But they're not rooted in African history.

    by superninja

They're not Africans. They're Americans. Anymore than an Irish American is rooted still in Ireland. Do you go around asking Irish people this? Obviously, the main difference is that they were brought here forcibly and used for slave labor, which was cruel and immoral. But during that time they began developing a culture apart from their slaveowners, simply for purposes of survival and comfort. Their decendants have nothing in common with African culture but very much with American culture.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 5:36 p.m. CST

    by glodene

You still don't get it. Every ethnic group(s) culture in one way or another has a point of reference that is grounded in a deep tradition that goes to their point of origin (Ireland, Israel, etc.) African Americans (Blacks) doesn't have that connection.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 6:06 p.m. CST

Strangely, neither do I! I just tend to stick to

American. I guess I visited a Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma a few times, but I have not been to the motherland Europe yet! But which country do I visit? My anglo roots or my slavic? My, the choices! Oh well. Trust me, I get it. You, though? I doubt it. Their point of origin is Africa, their culture is not. It is distinctly American.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 6:07 p.m. CST

Um...Irish Americans are generally quite rooted...

by Childe Roland their ethnicity, at least the ones I know (including a very large contingent of my family). They cling to very Irish traditions and superstitions very closely and maintain a very proud cultural identity. Not suggesting a direct correlation, but it is interesting to point out in the context of this larger conversation that the Irish portion of my family (my mom's mom's people) are among the most racist human beings I know. And anchorite, I really do understand where you're coming from and how you got to where you are in your views, I just think they're off base by enough of a margin to make you appear racist to enough folks that you might (just might) want to consider things from their perspective. Here's a question: If an individual of different pigmentation or ethnicity than you perceives racism in your words or behavior toward them that you do not intend, can racism be said to exist? I think so, just as negative results can come from the best intentions. The abolishment of racism (as intended or perceived) can really only come from a mutual understanding of each other's points of view and sensitive consideration of the same in future dealings. And, for the record, I'm actually of the opinion that all peoples should "move on" in a sense if they are pointing to the past as justification for current actions. The past owes nobody anything but the knowledge gained from experiencing or learning about it. I think everyone could benefit form a much more grudgeless approach to dealing with others, both on the personal and the international level. But I know damned well that mindset puts me in a minority.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 6:31 p.m. CST

Childe Rowland. How about either a statement

    by superninja

is true or it is not? And instead of taking it personally, and therefore making it personal, you discuss the issue from the perspective of whether or not it is correct? I find that this cuts down on the ability to give or receive offense if people approach it in this manner. The problem is, most people argue solely based on emotion.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 6:37 p.m. CST

    by glodene

The American culture that you're referring to for the most part is Euro-centric at best, but by your own admission, you have your Cherokee & Slavic cultures/traditions to draw from. In my dealings with Africans (Nigerians, Ethiopians, etc.) are somewhat troubling in the sense that their opinions of African Americans are that we are damaged and lossed and will never be accepted as true Africans...So the culture that you're referring to is something that was thrusted upon us, as opposed to something more spiritually organic.

Charlize Theron is an African-American, right?

    by Immortal_Fish

If she is, then Earl Cameron is an African-American-Britan, yes? Quite silly, all this. Teddy Roosevelt was right about hyphenated Americans. You're either an American... or not.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 6:54 p.m. CST

    by glodene

Bringing up Charlize Theron as an African American is nothing more than a cheap-rationalization...And considering that she was born in South Africa during Apatheid is insulting, especially in an old interview she stated after apatheid was abolished that there would be no future for White Africaners.

    by glodene

Considering all the atrocities that was committed against Biko, Mandella & the black South Africans during apatheid - FUCKEM! And before any of you go off on me for being less than sympathetic, i reserve the right to be just as knave as The Jews when they feel that they've been wronged.

  • Aug. 3, 2006, 7:54 p.m. CST

    by glodene

I'm merely empathizing with the Black South Africans after all they went through, as opposed to playing the good negro (ala Sidney Portier) and turning the other cheek. As far as Israel's response to the Hezbollah bombings, i think that they are guilty of overkill as usual, but as in So. Africa, when you treat people like shit they will act like shit. Israel tends to get carte blanch in all of their military endeavors, so what can you do except hope that the middle east doesn't become one big Jihad and nuke the oil supply while fucking each other up.

  • Aug. 4, 2006, 1:44 a.m. CST

    anchorite, don't kid yourself

    by glodene

What's going on in the Middle East is not complicated. It's nothing more than the haves and the have-nots fighting over land and an antiquated religious belief system. Whose right and whose wrong is immaterial. It all boils down to conquering or be conquered. Its the same old passion play called Mans inhumanity to Man blah, blah, blah...The only problem is that some of these overly-emotional children have nuclear weapons and when push comes to shove they won't be afraid to use them in the name of Allah.

  • Aug. 4, 2006, 11:42 a.m. CST

    Now you're projecting.

    by glodene

Not once did i imply that what was going on with blacks in America was complicated, but on behalf of all my welfare mooching, car-stealing, under-educated brothers and sisters who obviously been taking advantage of the affirmative action quota system, i appologize for keeping your white jewish ass from reaching your full potential as a privileged and successful member of society. Just promise me that you won't be joining some angry white male militia and start blowing up federal buildings and releasing anthrax all over place, because in the overall scheme of things y'all still have over 95% of the pie while us mooching minorities are still fighting over the scraps...See it ain't complicated...It all boils down to the haves and have-nots. PEACE!

    HA! HA! HA!

    by glodene

Calm down Anchy! In fact, you're cordially invited to return your senses. I don't hate white people. Hell, they sign my paycheck and contribute to my 401k plan. I luv white people. Some of my best sexual experiences has come from being pleasured by some of y'all's more than accomodating daughters...And if i recall MUTHA FUCKA, it was you who threw down the racist gauntlet by posting earlier that us colored folks be breaking into yo' car and be exhibiting "Cultural Lethargy & Bad Behavior". It's like i said before - You treat people like shit, They act like shit. Now i don't know what yo' mama taught you as a young'un, but when you make statements like that, some people will tend to take that shit the wrong way. It's just basic physics: For every action, there will be a reaction...So i suggest that you work on your people skills bitch and stop being so goddamn superior and condescending. Who knows, next time you may not get passed up for that next promotion by some unqualified un-deserving minority.
