Hey folks, Harry here... If you know INFERNAL AFFAIRS, one of the most brilliant modern Hong Kong films. Now, it's a bit unfair to judge, given this trailer has been given the "Entertainment Tonight" treatment of annoying bubblehead commentary - but I think it'll be a bit getting used to the culture change to the original film - but having said that - I really do feel this movie is going to be gold. The script was excellent and the casting was beyond fantastic. But for now - take a look at this...

jesus Harry you must be the most pretentious fucker in history. Which, being pretentious myself, is fine. What fucking sticks in my craw is how completely arbitrary it is for you. It ahs nothing to do with quality for you. But then again I guess that's what I get from a guy who named a puppet movie that no one has ever heard of as one of the best films of last year. You just HAD to put that little blurb about how its unsettling to you that its not chinese didnt you? It's a totally different movie with a fantastic writer, director, and cast and it will probably be a completely and utterly different piece of art, albiet excellent nontheless, but you just have to draw that distinction so you can look like a know-it-all asshole. Pathetic.

Good to see Scorcese back in top form. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Aviator a lot and even Gangs of New York but I've always wanted the man to get back to his roots. Remind me not to really pay any mind to the early reviews on this site that come in from "DarthMaul691" or "MNightShemale-fan" or whatever. Who the fuck cares if its a remake, its a Scorcese remake. Look what he did with Cape Fear, and most people actually saw the original for that. It's like someone announcing John Carpenter is going to remake Freaks, you know he'd knock it out of the park. Kinda liked that Comfortably Numb cover as well, almost sounded like some recent Van Morrison to me but I can't be sure. Hope Gimme Shelter isn't in the soundtrack though as he has already used that. SCORCESE IS BACK!

    by gwai lo

Like most artists from his time I think he is resting on his laurels and has been making generic music for a decade or two (unless he's covering something as good as Comfortably Numb of course), but it's hard to front on the man's catalog of classic songs. It's like saying Bob Dylan is a hack because he hasn't had a groundbreaking album for a long time. Even if you don't like him or you're just ticked off that your parents play him on all your vacations and car trips, you gotta admit Van Morrisson is boss. Anyone who doesn't like songs like "And it Stoned Me" is someone I don't want to know.

The mood of the song doesn't fit the mood of the trailer AT ALL. That version of the song is not very good, Comfortably Numb is one of Pink Floyds most overexposed songs, it was recently redone by the scissor sisters, it has too much baggage. Marty's music...

    by viola123

The song reminded me of "Goodfellas" and we know that Martin Scorsese always picks perfect songs to complement his films. I just know this soundtrack will be the same. Yay. Although I do love that first bit of music we heard best. Speaking of "mood", I think that set it up as a Marty movie... I didn't realize how big Mark Wahlberg's part was though. It must be pretty big for him to be one of the names and that makes me even more happy, *g*... I'm off to watch it again. LOL. But also, jackinitraw -- re: the HTML. Sorry I keep bringing it up everyone, but I'm just sorry it messed up the frames for some people. Wish there was an edit button. :( And about posting the URL, I never, ever do that usually. I was just so excited over "The Departed" and didn't stop to read the thread. One last - sorry. But I must say, it's all Marty's fault, *g*.

    Waters *isn't* Floyd

    by goatboy

His solo stuff has never been as good as his Floyd work. Without Gilmour to balance his acid, Waters spirals off into egomaniacal self-parody. And without Waters, Floyd is generic MOR music with Gilmour co-writing with his wife about eco-issues and middle-aged observations on life. Watching Floyd without Waters is like seeing a tribute band, and Waters without Floyd is a drunken Uncle ranting about the youth of today.

    Sorry about the Floyd/Waters confusion

    by readingwriter

My fault, just habit I guess, and I don't think it's that big a deal. But I did name the correct album, so I forgive myself. Anyway, whoever mentioned that Gilmour balanced out Waters hit it square. Waters' self-pitying whining and deep cynicism had its charms when balanced by Gilmour's guitar playing. Separately, Gilmour is plastic and Waters is just a whiny bitch--"It sucks being famous when you had a rough childhood!" Yeah, yeah. Similarly, Morrison still has his ability but he keeps writing songs about how it sucks being famous. Maybe if he didn't have so many thieving business associates he wouldn't be so cranky. And although others here hate it I still prefer that version of the song; Morrison just adds a strength to the delivery that's less wimpy. I think it goes perfectly with the tone of the trailer.

    by occula

would this feel a whole lost more scorcese-y if his camerawork had some sass to it? some dirty grunginess to fit the story? doesn't it look somehow polished and bland? that kind of bums me out.

But I've been pretty excited to see this movie for a while, much more-so now. Though nobody in this movie can touch Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Anthony Wong. Or Eric Tsang. Hell, Andy Lau too. But this looks to be an excellent try, with more than a few nods to the original.

    by viola123

occula, I noticed that too. It did seem a little polished to me and also, it being modern. I'm so used to him creating an era so beautifully - that was different as well. But I do think it's going to be wonderful. I just have a feeling. (Or is this merely my wish?) But I think the cast is amazing and Marty is brilliant and this film's release date can't get here soon enough, *g*. That said, I'm hoping when we see the final print, it has Marty's imprint, his signature all over it! Go Marty!

Thank you. I thought I was going to be the only one who thought that the bad version of comfortably numb really REALLY did not fit the mood of the rest of the trailer. I thought it was badass shit until that hit and I cringed at it. The song has been very overexposed lately (especially with the Scissor Sisters) and at this point it IS the eqivalent of the Jay-Z/Linkin Park Mash-up. Movie looks cool, but I'm having a hard time trusting Marty lately. Older shit was great, Gangs = horrible (except Daniel Day Lewis), and Aviator = decent to good. Here's hopin' though!

    trailer music...

    by pupworm

i'm sorry, but this is the third time Scorcese's used The Rolling Stone's "Gimmie Shelter." First in Goodfellas, second in Casino (twice in fact counting its trailer as well), and now here, along with Leo doing his DeNiro "Cape Fear" prison workout impression. We can only hope it doesn't show up in The Departed.
But do we blame Scorcese, or do we blame marketing for thinking his "clever" use of music is still valid. Sure the music in "Bringing Out The Dead" was great, but it felt forced on the story instead of being apart of it. Stick to a score or hum in the back of the theater, either way i'll wait.

Dude, what's with the fucking excitement over Jack?

    by sk909

He's only good as JAAAACK. Just like Bogart couldn't really be anyone but a variation on Bogart. He's a movie star, someone you can instantly imitate. Scorsese's good with character actors, not movie stars. Now, unless this is the perfect role, where Jack's movie star persona collides with the part in a perfect match, like Cuckoo's Nest or The Last Detail (when he was still inventing that persona), then fuck it. DeNiro's always been a character actor, but the second he made that face in Goodfellas while he was smoking that cigarette and thinking of killing Morrie, he did something regular people could imitate, and thus, now we're stuck with Meet the Fockers. He's not a star like Nicholson, he's an ACTOR like Pacino. He's only a star in the sense that he's super famous, but not in that sense of his personality is what drives his films. Damon is always one to watch, but here's an idea - WORK WITH GONNA BE'S NOT FUCKING HAS BEENS. DeNiro, in 1972, wasn't dying to be in the next Hitchcock movie, nor was Scorsese dying to work with Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. What the fuck is with this shit? Scorsese can still be more interesting to watch than any other director, but that's only because of the horrible state of things. I didn't like Requiem that much and have bitched about it endlessly on here, but the more I think about it, the more I gotta give props to Aronofsky after seeing that Fountain trailer and poster and knowing he spent nearly half a decade trying to get it made. THAT'S who people like Damon should be falling all over themselves to work with. Brad Pitt too, but I guess getting to show his ass in a movie and be in a movie that would make the tabloids was more important than helping bring Aronofsky's vision to the screen. Unbelievable, I swear... and while hopes for The Fountain are running so high as to be almost impossible to fulfill, at least he's swinging for the fences and it's only his third film. Think about how different the film seems from Requiem and Pi while most others of his generation keep churning out the same old attempts at seeming clever and ironic. THANK CHRIST, someone is being sincere without fear of seeming pretentious. I used to call it pseudo-intellectual but now I realize it's actually artistic courage. It's like Coppola said in Hearts of Darkness - "Finally you say fuck it! I don't care if it's pretentious!"

    by cardinalhog

AWESOME. The trailer was great, except for the end part with Nicholson saying, "How's your mother?" I hate it when trailers end with a little comic jab. It's stupid, especially for a serious film such as this.

The music, really, set the tone for this trailer. Van Morrison's cover to end the trailer really blended great with the footage. The whole crane shot with the Japanese (?) symbol in neon lights with the music hitting is fantastic artwork.

I can't wait for this one.

I've watched this trailer so many times...

    by viola123

... and it's beautiful. I know I wrote that yesterday, but I just wanted to say so again, *g*. The music too. Watching it scene by scene now, the music works wonderfully. I think I had to get used to it as well, but after watching it over and agin, and no longer pausing for the music, it just flows. *sigh*. Leo and Jack, Mark and Matt look awesome. (Still the only wish I have is that Robert De Niro was in this.) I cannott wait! And, I'm rambling now, *lol*. But Marty's style. Even though this trailer doesn't let us see much of it yet (though that first shot of Jack with the Marty music - *eee*!), we'll see it all over "The Departed". Don't you think? I'm so excited!!

how closely will this be remade?

    by quentintarantado

Will this be like Kurosawa remaking westerns or will this be like westerns remaking Kurosawa remaking westerns? Which would be a good thing? (Or worse, Gangster film remaking western remaking Kurosawa remaking westerns). I'd complain about Hollywood pilfering from Asian cinema again, but since it's Goodfellas Scorsese, he gave me pause. If anyone can, he might.

Looks pretty faithful to the original to me. I'm sure the details will be different but the broad strokes of the story look to be all there, and I couldn't be happier. Lotta shots in the trailer look just like their counterparts in IA. Lets hope the female characters are a little better this time around. Also, the soundtrack for IA rocked, if the original music in The Departed is half as nice I'll have no complaints.

    by harry weinstein

Looks good - though a little TOO close to the great original. I was hoping Scorcese would put a grittier spin on it, but a lot of this looks shot for shot like the very slick and polished original version. It's INFERNAL AFFAIRS - THE CAUCASIAN CONNECTION. I see what Chris Doyle was getting at when he went off about it in that interview (that you can summon up with Google, no time to hunt down the URL).
