Quint on the 300 panel! Best footage of Comic Con (after that Spidey one, of course)!!!

Published at:  Jul 26, 2006 7:51:45 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some more coverage of the San Diego Comic Con, specifically Warner Bros. 300 panel, Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name. The story is about The Spartans, real life Greek warriors who, while only 300, stood up against an army numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

At first I wasn't completely behind the project. I really liked the production diaries online, but I was worried that the freshness of SIN CITY was going to get stale by the time 300 hits, since Snyder seemed to be doing very similar things to bring Miller's work to life. I didn't want to see 300, the SIN CITY way, you know? And while I liked DAWN OF THE DEAD, I'm not the world's biggest fan of how the character work was pulled off in that movie. The zombie stuff and gore was great, but let's just say I wasn't 100% behind Snyder for this movie.

Then I saw the footage. I don't want to talk another movie down to hold a movie up, so I don't want you guys to think this is a diss. I love SIN CITY to death. But the footage of 300 I saw blew it away. Take effects work on the level of LORD OF THE RINGS and put it in a stylized Frank Miller type world. The colors jumped, the movie felt open and epic. SIN CITY still rocks out and is just as different from 300 as Frank Miller's original books are different from each other. I think Rodriguez and Miller masterfully made one of the coolest movies in the past decade. And I'm shocked that 300, outside of that circle of trust, seems to be as involved and as loyal to the source material.

They played the footage 3 times. Three times. The audience went ballistic for it and so did I.

The clip had many panels I recognized from Miller's book, but moving and so full of color that it was genuinely like a moving piece of art. The footage opened with a Spartan holding up a naked baby, he's inspecting him on a cliff-side. The voice over tells us this is Leonidas, who had to be inspected at birth like all Spartans. If he showed any sign of weakness, illness or abnormality he would have been tossed over the cliff-side to die. You can see the ground below and it's littered with baby skeletons and skulls.

The next bit had flashes of his training. As a young boy sparring with a grown man. The boy is maybe 7 or 8 and is obviously no match for the warrior training him. He gets a powerful backhand, spinning the child around, blood gushing out of his mouth. The voice over here talks about his training as we see the kid glaring at the camera in a super close up, one eye blackened severely. The next bit had the child on top of another, beating him in the face. Which each hit (in slow motion) the blood jumps up at camera.

For the next bit we see the teenage boy hunting in the snow, with nothing but a long spear. There's a giant fantastical wolf. It's obviously CGI, but not in a way that stood out negatively. The design of this fucker was brutal. It's snout was abnormally large and snarled up as it circled the boy, who showed now fear. Its fur was matted and gross. Its eyes were burning red. The next shot had the wolf's shadow on the rock wall behind the teenager and in the foreground he jabs forward with the spear, the shadow behind him showing the spear going through the wolf's mouth and up through it's brain. The next shot had this teenager being presented with his Spartan shield and cloth.

They had the sequence where the messenger comes to talk to King Leonidas (Gerard Butler). The messenger is standing near the precipice asd The warriors pull their weapons on the smiling messenger who was there to tell them that the armies of 3 nations were descending on them. The messenger says, "This is crazy!" Gerard Butler has his sword at the man's throat and screams, "This is Sparta!!!" before rearing back and sending one of his sandal-clad feet powerfully into the man's chest, sending him back into the pit. You see this in slow-motion and can see the thudding impact of the kick.

There was also a great line on the battlefield. It appears to be a meeting between two representatives of the fighting armies. The baddie says that their army has so many archers that if the Spartans choose to continue fighting that their arrows will be so many as to block out the sun. The response, "Then we shall battle in the shade." Then you actually see this volley of arrows go up in a nice wide shot and it does indeed send a shadow along the ground.

You get glimpses of Ephialtes, the mongoloid character that survived the "thinning out" process as a child and dreamed of becoming a Spartan while hiding from the society, knowing they will destroy him if they knew of him. He shows up to help our Spartan warriors, eager as a beaver. In the footage he looked very much like Sloth from GOONIES. I didn't see a full body shot of him, but he certainly was wearing the Spartan cape. There was another fucked up character I didn't recognize from the book... I'll have to go look through it again, but it was this fat dude, lumpy with mutation or cancer, who had two nasty looking blades for arms, starting at about the elbow. Looked like chainsaw blades... you know, when the chainsaw's not on. And there was the rhino charging through the battlefield, fucking a lot of warriors up. That was the most unfinished of the effects work, but it still looked really cool. If it ends up anywhere near as cool as the rest of the more finished footage then it'll be a stand-out sequence.

There were lots of little glimpses at stuff... there was a shot of an enemy's decapitated head spinning in slow motion, the mouth and eyes opened in shocked surprise. There was a shot of Gerard Butler having sex with a Sparta woman... beautiful woman with really nice lookin' boobs. Not as nice as Carla Gugino's in SIN CITY, but then again... what is as nice as Carla Gugino's boobies in SIN CITY? There was another tit shot of another woman dancing seductively, with silk flowing over her body. Much like this poster, but with nipples:

On the opposite end of the coin there was a shot of two women cheek to cheek. They turn towards camera and have some nasty scar tissue on their smiling faces. There was a shot that I loved of the enemy armies approaching the Spartans, but they are stopped by literally a wall of dead comrades. The wall of dead bodies is at least 8-10 feet tall and as they approach it a flood of dead bodies spills off the top of it, crashing down at the feet of the approaching warriors.

One of my favorite shots of the clip was of the enemy leader, Xerxes, turning towards camera and screaming in rage. Behind him is a gorgeous landscape. The background shows ships landing on the beach as well as fires on the cliffs surrounding the beach, sending up smoke as armies move around him. Great shot.

Tidbits from the panel (featuring David Wenham, Gerard Butler, Frank Miller and Zack Snyder):

- Zack Snyder was asked how closely he stuck to the original graphic novel and Snyder said pretty close. "I have no ideas of my own...". He got a laugh from that one. He said he just wanted to "Not fuck it up, Hollywood style."

- Did Frank Miller co-direct like he did with Robert Rodriguez on SIN CITY? Nope. "This is Zack's movie," said Miller.

- Gerard Butler trained hard and heavy for this movie. He ripped his hip flexers while shooting and said, "I came out of this movie pretty much a cripple."

- Butler was also talking about working in genre film. "I've done lots of stuff now... Dracula, Beowulf, Phantom..." And Frank Miller cuts him off going, "Would you rather be doing PARENTHOOD 3?" Butler responds, "I'm not complaining, Frank." There's a pause then Butler adds, "Let me say what an honor it was to work with the great Frank Miller!" And every laughs and applauds.

- How about working with the costumes, nothing but cod-pieces and capes. Butler said when he first put on the outfit he never felt more stupid in his entire life. When he first got into his cod-piece and cape, he had to walk around, past the grips and crew members, but after he had been in it for a couple days he got really used to it.

- David Wenham's reaction to the outfit? When he got the part he said he got Frank Miller's 300 graphic novel and his panic set in pretty quickly when he saw his character, Delios, first pops up butt-naked a few pages into the book. He said he "hit the panic button" and started making phone calls, inquiring as to how much he'd have to show for the camera...

- They shot the whole film in 60 days in Montreal, "The obvious choice for ancient Greece." hehe

- Capes were a problem during shooting. They'd always flap up and twist around the sword. Butler wondered how many soldiers have died on the battlefield because their capes held them up. Butler in particular had cape problems... He was talking about working 15 hours a day, the capes were very heavy and by the end of the day his arms would be really sore, like they were ready to fall off. Miller interrupts again and says, "Spoken like a true Spartan!" Butler responds immediately in a whiny voice, "It huuuurrrttt. Sometimes it'd give me a little scrape...." Wenham broke in this time and said, "I didn't feel the capes were difficult at all."

- Miller talked about visiting Greece and seeing the actual location of this battle. There's a plaque on a hillside where they were killed. He said if he hadn't visited Greece, seen the land and ridden over its waters he couldn't have possibly interpreted the story because the land and seas were the Greek's primary weapons.

- The music in the clip was a Nine Inch Nails track, but he said the final score will be a mix of electrical and classical. Snyder said, "I don't want it to be too rock & rolly, but it does rock!"

- Miller saw a rough assemblage of the film and gave it his approval. He said Zack's film is both "timeless and contemporary." I'm assuming the contemporary comes in Snyder's stylish work as a director.

- Frank Miller was asked about his comic work and what he'd like to work on. Miller said he loves the Marvel universe and hasn't played in there as much as he has with DC, but that he wants to focus more on his own stuff than any particular character.

- This made me love Gerard Butler. He was asked why he got into acting and he responded with his sarcastic comment first, then went into his real response. "Alcoholism." Lots of laughs. Then he said he wanted to be an actor at age 10 and that he would watch movies and see himself in them. He specifically mentioned KRULL, that he could see himself starring in that and went around as a young guy imaging himself in the movie. That rocks.

- Snyder's final word: "Graphic novels don't need to be fixed, they need to be filmed." I hope he bring that mantra into WATCHMEN with him.

Count me as 100% behind this film. It is easily in my top 5 most anticipated movies in the works and one of the best presentations of Comic-Con, hands down. Beautiful stuff.

Anyway, I'm back in Austin and busting my butt to finish up this coverage. The next week will see the other 14 one on one interviews I conducted at the Con as well as my wrap-up of panels. Some great stuff left, squirts, so keep yer eyes on the site!

Sin city budget was officially 40 million. lets add 20 million for PnA = 60 million. it made 74 million domestic. huge geek following, lots of big-name actors and thats all it pulls in. now, granted, it did make an additional 85 million foreign (again thanks in large part to the talent). Now 300 - again frank miller, again huge following, though i would say perhaps less than Sin. Not full of a-list talent, budgeted at 60 million (assuming 40 for PnA) = 100 million. does warner really think it'll make that at least 150 (as it must to "break even"), taking into consideration the exhibitors' piece of the pie?? i just dont get it. this is a business, the suits dont greenlight movies to appease the geek fan-base. This movie doesnt make sense to me. These suits just drool all over themselves to be in business with young, barely-proven directors like Snyder. I mean he made one ok horror movie, full of the requisite quick-cuts-28-Days-style horror. And this guy's going to take on Watchmen??? You kidding me?? the guy cant even put two thoughts together in a sentence. Sad sad. This type of myopic thinking is why i left the business.

yassoo, I get what you're saying about Snyder. I was at the comc-con panel, and I was struck by his quietness and seeming lack of articulateness. But after seeing the footage, I wonder if it wasn't just modesty. I'll tell ya, each frame was like a gorgeous, viseral painting. If the rest of the film lives up to the scenes they screened, then hell yeah I'd give him Watchmen. And any other property he wanted to film. I'd rather have a soft-spoken director that does amazing work instead of one that talks a good game and then delivers crap.

This movie will be visually spectacular because the carnage that took place at the Battle of Thermopylae was more intense than anything in Sin City. In fact, Sin City x 300 will the catch phrase that geeks will incorporate once the full trailer hits. Franks Miller

I'd much rather see a film that sticks to what actually happened in that battle. I think that is more interesting than watching some little kid kill a CGI wolf in the forest. Also Quint you should know that the line about fighting in the shade, is an actual famous quote from that battle. As a side note, Frank Miller is fucking scary looking.

    Alcoholism

    by agentsculder

Gerard Butler's comment about alcoholism is actually not a joke. He was an alcoholic when he was training to be a lawyer. He was absolutely miserable, and two weeks before starting his first job he was fired by his law firm because of his drinking problem. His heart was never really in the law, and used getting fired as a way to turn his life around. He has said on numerous occasions getting fired was the best thing that could have possible happened to him.

the spartans did indeed thoroughly believe in homosexuality. their menfolk were absolutely expected to form emotional and sexual bonds with their fellow warriors, the idea being to improve cohesion, courage and cameraderie. the battle of thermopylae would suggest they might have had something there.

    This is irrelevant, but..

    by doc_manhattan

This movie will only make about 30 million dollars at the box office. I absolutely can't see it making more than 40 million. Tying it promotionally to Sin City in the posters will not do much good except for maybe us in the geek crowd. Remember, "Sin City" did good business mostly because of the star power and despite the technology, despite the look. This film will probably be really cool, but I suspect it will tank like "Sky Captain" because the heavy CGI-rendering is too much for the mainstream crowd. They, and I, have a hard time relating to the story with this kind of illustrational, drawing type look.

    Forgot to mention that..

    by doc_manhattan

The budget for this is 60 million according to Box Office Mojo. Add marketing costs of up to 40 million, and Warner Bros will never earn their money back on this if the movie fails to appeal to a mainstream audience and only earns about 30-40 million (which is what it looks like now, with no real good "hook" apparent in the promotion - lack of stars, lack of exiting premise and also featuring that pretty, but flat and fake CGI created look). WB could be looking at a big loss, and that has got to affect their approach towards Watchmen.. Im just sayin..

they didn't even consider it a concept to believe in or expect or not. it was just an aspect of their civilisation. you may as well say we today 'believe' in, eg. human rights. actually, given the state of the world today, im not sure that's analagous at all.

    by orbots commander

Looking at those one sheets advertising 300, it's a bit odd that the producers and studio wouldn't emphasize the epic battle aspect of the story, and draw visual allusions to movies like Braveheart and Gladiator. Because as it is now, it looks like it's only going for a small segment of the viewing audience.

    Spartans

    by agentsculder

You guys need to chill out with worrying that the film will come off as gay. Yes, certain Greek cultures did encourage homosexual relationships between warriors, but the Spartans were not among them. If anything they looked down on societies that did. If you've read Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" or seriously studied the Spartans that is something that is made very clear. Older soldiers did act as mentors to those who were younger, but the relationships were strictly platonic. It was the Anthenians who heavily engaged in pederasty, which is refered to obliquely in the graphic novel. Anything "gay" about the movie will come from people who can't get past well built men walking around without a lot of clothes doing manly things together. They need to grow up.

    by gwai lo

It's probably going to get a hard R. Maybe that's why the poster depicts what 99% of moviegoers will think is a zombie. Who knows, it's hard to predict box office for a movie like this. You can't just use Sin City as a yardstick. Just wait and see.

...is supposedly a quote from Leonidas, either historical or legendary. Still, whether verifiable or not, it's a pretty badass statement. I highly recommend to everyone "Gates of Fire" --it's one of those books you read and say, "Damn, this should REALLY be a movie"...think Gladiator meets Saving Private Ryan. Oh--another Spartan quote/saying: "We Spartans don't ask how many, but where."

    by meersan

Sparta? Which totalitarian regime are we going to glorify next, Stalin's USSR? Despite the inaccuracies I'm glad they're filming 300 rather than Gates of Fire, which turned the Spartans into "a bunch of American combat buddies". It made you wonder what the helots were whining about. Also, homosexuality was deeply ingrained in the Spartan culture, just like every other classical Greek society of the time. To say otherwise is deeply misleading and ignores the Spartans' own writings. If you have a problem with that, feel free to take it up with any ancient Spartans you happen to know. Perhaps they will apologize to you for not adhering to your personal code of morality. ** The Spartans were people of few words, but they made each one count. When one person, referring to the enemy, said, "They're close to us," Leonidas replied, "Then we are also close to them."

    by iamnicksaicnsn

I only saw the last 20 minutes of the panel because I was in the first half of the Lost panel having a good time hearing them have a good time talking about Lost. When I got to my friends who were at the 300 panel, the guy I sat next to said to me "holy shit dude, this movie is going to be fucking amazing. They already showed it twice, hopefully they'll show it again, so you can see it." So I sat for a few minutes, listening to what the actors and Frank and Snyder had to say, not really caring too much, but assuming if my friend was that interested, it'd be good. Then, as they answered the last question, someone up there, can't remember who, specifically, said "let's see it again, eh?" And it pulled up..... My jaw was literally dropped the entire fucking time. Just reading Quint's write up brought tears to my eyes at the fucking majesty of it. This, Grind House, and Spider-Man 3 will literally destroy the world. And speaking of kick ass movies, I can't wait for Children of Men to come out, fucking glad it'll be out soon.

    Miami Vice (SEX) review bitch....

    by darth evil dead

    Hey kids and child molesters,

Just got out of Michael Mann's Miami Vice staring Jamie Foxx and Colin Ferrell. So how was it? Well it was just okay. Which is not good, not bad. If you want to see a good Michael Mann movie go watch Heat. Then watch Heat again because its that fucking good. Then watch Collateral.

The movie has really nothing to do with the TV show, except for the character names. Thats about it. Oh yeah and there cops and one is black and the other is white and they live in Miami. Thats about it. They dont act like the characters of the show or anything. One thing about this movie..is its played real. There is nothing amazing happening here. No amazing stunts like MI3. Its set in the real world. And like people in the real world, these characters are boring. You will give two shits about Colin and Jamie in this film. These characters are boring..and you dont care about them on a emotional level. The Problem is Colin gets about 70% of the screen time in this movie. Jamie I think has 2 scenes in the movie that Colin is not in. Colin might have 20 scenes with no Jamie. And when Colin is on the screen..He is just sitting there stairing at the camera, with a fucked up look on his face. His character is played almost the same way he played John Smith in that Pochantas movie "The New World" he did. He does not do alot in the movie. So the more interesting of the characters Jamie, has a lot less screen time then the boring Colin.

Another fucked up part of the movie is the fucking. There are two sex scenes in the movie that do nothing. Its that slow fucking in slow motion with music. Its not sex. There making love. And there long sex scenes. Each one is about 3 min long. So for 3 minutes we are stairing at really really soft core stuff in slow motion. You see no tits..No Pussy...No cumming..NOTHING!!! If your going to put some sex in your fucking movie atleast make it so a guy might get a hard on by watching it. Why the fuck do you Michael Mann think the audience would care to see Colin or Jamie's back to the camera..covering up the Lady their screwing for a total of 6 minutes? Why? I hate when directors put G rated sex in their movies for no fucking reason. Either put hardcore sex in your film...Or dont put that shit in it at all!!! If your not even going to show a breast or some pussy...Then dont fucking put it in your film...6 minutes of watching Jamie and Colin bobbing up and down in slow motion to music does shit for us. It does not advance the story..It does not make us hard....Its fucking useless...Your puting everyone in the theater to sleep!!

The plot of this movie is that Jamie and Colin must go undercover has drug smugglers to make a bust on a drug lord. Same plot we seen a million times in movies...They gain trust of the bad guys..then their cover gets blown...then one of their loved ones gets kidnapped..And they must save her and stop the bad guys... There really is not alot of action in the movie..and not a whole lot of tension either. Heat and Collateral were way more intense and interesting to look at. You actually cared about the characters in those films. There is a shoot out scene in the end that is signature Michael Mann that is great. But the film on a whole...is just okay. And in a summer of huge blockbusters thats just not good enough. I dont see this movie as a franchiese.. It looks like it will be one and done... And I expect after a good openning weekend this movie will fizzal...As bad word of mouth will hurt it.. So its a okay movie.. You wont be mad at it. You will just wish it was more..more Jamie....more action....more character development...and less Colin...and less (I cant believe Im fucking saying it) sex..

sparta was even more zealous about pederasty than other greek states. they actually fined any older men who didnt have a young male lover. many classical texts maintain, though, that it while it was erotically inspired, it was all resolutely non-consummated. everything up to, but not actual sex, unlike other greek states, who made no such distinction and encouraged the full monty. PERSONALLY, ive always found that very hard to believe. i could just be so western-20th-centuryised that i can't comprehend a millenias-old hellenic concept of state-sponsored homosexual pederasty where you can do everything except penetrate each others ringpieces and have that be a distinction that everyone adheres to and believes in, contrary even to your neighbouring states who draw no such line. either way, the historical fact is all spartan men DID take boys for lovers as well as students, but may or may not have had actual bumsex, if that's important to your view. note: their women were similarly homosexual, but we're talking about men here.

OK - that 'arrows - sun' quote

    by cat_corporation

Yes, absolutely a quote from the battle - too good to have ben written by modern man. And FYI, NOT spoken by King Leonidas but one of his soldiers Dienekes - Herodotus Book 7, Chapter 226 - by all effects, a chap known for his pithy comments. But then again, 300 is fantasy, not history, so I guess we should all relax about the details........just don't tell my university I said that!!

You cover GILMORE GIRLS and SURVIVOR for chrissake, but NO DEADWOOD THREAD? I want to know and three emails have gone unanswered! We now return you to your previously scheduled bitchfest.

...I'm burning out a little on Frank Miller the film artist, but we'll see how it goes. Plus - is it just me, or would he make the perfect Vulture in a future Spidey movie? Well, either him or Picard.

...somebody needs to find the valve on his ego and let some wind out. "Co-directed" Sin City? Does that mean "Stand right here, like I drew it on this page?" Yeah, whatever. "You could be making 'Parenthood 3?'" I wish somebody on that panel would've slapped his silly cowboy hat off his Vulture-like noggin and reminded him he ain't Shakespeare, nor Michael Mann, nor Jack Kirby/Gene Colan/etc.

    If Constantine made money....

    by mr. profit

I don't see why this won't make money too. Don't underestimate an audience. Look what happened to Superman. If 300 is a good movie and has good word of mouth, it will have a long life at the box office.

    Constantine wasn't an historical epic

    by mattapooh

It really depends what time of year 300 is being released in. I know I'm definitely intrigued more than ever at this point and I'll probably end up going to see it, but the vast majority of the youth market has no interest in something like this. Gladiator's high box office taking was pretty much just a fluke, even though it's a very entertaining flick... there really hasn't been an historical flick since then to really hit it. If it's marketed well, it should do okay theatrically, but it definitely seems like one of those flicks that will explode on DVD due to it being a big, CGI-loaded epic that is worth a blind buy to a lot of people with good home theatre setups. It'll make it's money back, but it won't be until DVD. Hopefully the studio doing it loads it up with some extras and such, though.

What the HELL is with everyone trying to play the part of a movie studio accountant!??! "Oh, it cost X, but will it make X?" JESUS. Take me back to the good old days when a studio would blow money on fan boy projects, and the fans were HAPPY for it.

    Gladiator was a "Historical Epic".....

    by mr. profit

And it made money. I really like Zack Snyder and think he did a fantastic job with Dawn 04. It could have been complete horseshit like Land of the Dead, but it wasn't. Sure the movie kinda blows it's load in the 1st 15 mins, but it was still entertaining. I'm glad these under the radar directors like Verbinski and Snyder are out there making quality movies, instead of copying other directors and acting all flashy.

    by jimmyjoe redsky

i dont think frank miller is overly concerned with his appearance - great artists usually arent - funny how so many talkbackers jump on his looks - but i should expect as much from a place thats a haven for "fans" that think shyamalan sucks and "dog soldiers" is a movie masterpiece - and snyder being quiet and not very verbose should be no measure of his ability as a director - yassoo - im sorry to hear you left the "business" - exactly what theater chain were you fired from

    by imscully33

I was at the panel too--I can't wait for the naysayers to see that trailer. It was incredible. I just hope WB doesn't blow the promotion--for one, I think it ought to be released in May not March so it gets summer blockbuster status as it deserves.

Oh and to anyone who sees the video or reads the transcripts, I was actually the fangirl who asked about the skimpy costumes. ;) The trailer blew me away, I don't think I have been as excited for a film since LOTR.

    by ewokstew

Why should there be any rock at all! I'm sick of this stupid trend that started sometime in the late 80'S early 90's and is still going today.
It's a heavy, lush period piece. Orchestral scores just sound better.

just like any hollywood historical, except this one doesn't pretend to be exactly factual. who the guy in the poster is i really don't know. seems to be being punished. probably some artistic license they're taking with the facts. i don't recall covering any ugly fuckers in chains and shackles in my learnings on the event.

i was just kidding - i thought an industry insider might be able to take a joke - i forgot how you exec types take yourselves very seriously - ever see "the player" - was that you in celluloid form - you didnt offend me - i just find it annoying when "anyone" in a place like this (a movie fan site) starts rattling off box office numbers like pat o'brien - especially when a connection is attempted to be made between said numbers and a directors merit/worth - who should the studio have given 3oo to - michael (slo mo amber filter) bay? - i admire their choice in director - snyder's "dawn of the dead" was good - i actually enjoyed it more than romero's "land of the dead" - im eagerly looking forward to 300 the movie - im not crazy about "rock" elements in the scores of historical epics - even if the epics are filmed comic books - i would love to see miller's "ronin" made into a movie
