Weird Speculative News About EPISODE 2!
Folks, I'm sorry. I'm posting this up, and I'm sure I will be eaten a new waste exit for writing about this "wildly specualative and non-confirmed rumour-mongering rallying up the geeks non-news" But ya know... I really could care less. I'm going with it whether you naysayers like it or not. Why? Because I'm trying to see what out of all this stuff may be true.
Today I got people writing me out the wazoo about Episode 2. WHY? I mean aren't we all excited enough about Episode 1? But hey, the news and rumor patrol is in overload today. I'll start with the more likely and go to the out right speculative stuff down at the bottom.
Ok, the following comes from VERY RELIABLE PEOPLE... as in MULTIPLE SOURCES and has been CHECKED UP ON BY OTHER SOURCES. I would say this is the most reliable piece. And according to HOUDINI --- that spy I told you, you never ever hear from, it is FACT. So take this cracker and add a single granule of sodium chloride and swallow.

I have it on good authority that JONATHAN HALES has been hired to write
Episode 2. He was a writer on THE YOUNG INDY show...
Like I said, the above has been checked out. The next stuff is more in line with speculation. But follow through if ya like....
I've been hearing from lots a people that Steven Spielberg is gonna direct Episode 2, and that's why he moved Memoirs of a Geisha back 4 months. Yeah, like 4 months was enough time to shoot and put together EPISODE 2. Welll along comes this stuff about Spielberg moving GEISHA back till 2001.... 2001..... 2001 .....2001 ....2001... Well... gosh... that would give him enough time to shoot.... Episode 2 and the next Indiana Jones film. Of course that is pure hokem till the man, the legend steps up to the microphony and says, "I hereby declare my most excellent self directing EPISODE 2 and/or INDY 4" Now, I can here fanboy slapping of midriff flesh with their eyes tightly clenched, but it may come true. "A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES!!!"
I was watching CNN's Showbiz today Oct. 21st. In one of the stories, there
was
a report that Steven Spielberg was have told the studio he is doing
"Memoirs"
that he would not be able to do it until 2001 due to other projects that he
is
working on. What is the news on this?
Remington Steele
Oh, and then there's this .... ahem... scoop about the film filming...
Last Week Ewan Macgregor turned up in London with a neatly kemped beard very much like Obi Wan's from A New Hope.
He said he'd just got back off holiday in Australia.
I knew they'd been location scouting in Australia for Episode 2, but then today I got a call from a contact at The Sunday Times
who interviewed Rick McCallum three weeks ago and is to interview him again in one week's time.
The script for Episode 2 is finished. So finished in fact that they started shooting Episode 2 in Australia a couple of weeks ago.
That crap about re-building the set in Tunisia for Mos Espa and that 40% out of focus crap was just that - crap. It was a front
for Episode 2 stuff.
Stuff at Leavesden has really quietened down, but it's been purposefully taking all the limelight while Lucas goes off and shoots
Episode 2 elsewhere. Did I say Lucas? Don't get excited, I can get no confirmation at all that Lucas is directing Episode 2. He's
said all along he didn't want to.
What's more, I have a friend involved with a movie shooting here in England early next year that stars Samuel L. Jackson.
They've just had a spanner thrown in the works by him because he's had written into his contract that has the right to delay
shooting to go shoot one more big budget movie before he flies over. Word is it's in Australia.
So all I ask is... Who the hell do you know in Australia?!
HARRY NOTE: Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey GARTH!!!!! LINCOLN!!!!! THIS IS YOUR BACKYARD
You can call me The Transformed Man
And as if to lend credence to the above, I got this from Australia.
Hey Harry with this episode 2 stuff I live in Australia and there has been
quite a bit of stuff going on in the Fox studios also today I read that
Lucas is going to be in Sydney for quite a while 'holidaying'.....yeah sure,
also he's here long enough to present an award in the local film industry
awards, sorry it isnt much but i thought you could get one of your spies
onto it
Zaius
Most recently I got this about the AUSTRALIA shooting, so it ain't happening yet.... that we can tell...
Just thought I should let you know, Ep 2 is not currently shooting in
Australia, how do I know? I'm (deleted) and next week
I'll be flying up to Sydney to listen to George give the Keynote speech at
SPAA, a local conference for producers.
As far as I know, he and Rick Mac are finalising the deal with the
Government, re; tax breaks etc, but they haven't started rolling yet. At
this point there isn't a local crew guy and or chick that's even booked as
far as I know, so either it's the most secert shoot in history (it's a big
country but a small industry so no way) or it's still some months off.

This is great info Harry.
BTW: I did some research on the domain balanceoftheforce.com. This domain was taken by theforce.net, but it said it was on hold. So I called Internic and asked them what the deal was. They told me..heh..we can't say anything about 3rd parties..I asked..well..is lucasfilm involved..he laughed and said..trust me..PEOPLE want to get their hands on this domain..but I would get a good Laywer if you want it.. Thus I think my idea that "Balance of the force" being the title is true.
Also the trailer is NOT going to be on the SEIGE..I called around.
Enjoy,

Okay, first of all, I also did some checking and learned from the Cinescape site that the prequel trailer will not be on the Siege. The next possible film for it to be attached to would be The Thin Red Line or A Cool Dry Place. Additionally, there is speculation that Lucas may create a new prequel-related film that could update the current Star Tours attraction at Disneyland. I can't wait to be flying through a pod race next to Anakin Skywalker or through the Naboo swamp being chased by STAPs! Whatever it's gonna be - you know it'll be cool!
-
I sure hope this is true, but I tend to think not. I remember Speilberg saying that Star Wars is Lucas' project and nobody elses. However, that stuff about episode 2 sounds logical to me. Episode 1 is the perfect curtain in which to hide episode 2 behind. I sure hope this is true. This could re-unite film fans with the Lucas/Spielberg era.
-
The Spielberg rumors are certainly on overdrive...I remeber the little tid-bit over the summer about how they rebuilt a central park (as it was in the 30's,40's, or 50's) supposedly for a Spielberg movie... apparently, it was on the same lot as W.W.W. which doesn't make sense to me but...I can't remember all the details but did mail them to Jawad...As far as Indy IV...Spielberg and Ford have said they want to do it and that they know "what kind of a villian they want to have and it won't be the nazis."...At the Smithsonian Instititute thing over the summer, Harry and I talked about possible plotlines...(he made a joke about Indy finding the Millennium Falcon at at the end of a long Egyptian odessy...worlds colliding...brain exploding) since then I have decided that the best possible scenario for an Indy movie is the Chinese invasion of Tibet...it would jive with Ford's Buddhist beliefs, and could be the best Indy since Raiders. A Seven Years in Tibet a la Indy. Lucas himself has been interested in Buddhism and has used it as an influence for Star Wars. As far as pissing off the Chinese...well, they get pissed at every little thing anyway. And they only allow ten foreign films per year to be distributed into their country...additionally, there's a little item that was posted a few days ago over at the daily sci-fi thing at The Den that has Spielberg meeting with Gary Busey and Rutger (King of Cinemax) Hauer ...and Spielberg is quoted as saying that his next movie "Wont win him any Academy Awards but people won't be sorry they spent seven-fifty." The story says Spielberg is tired of making great movies and wants to just make good ones...(note: I'm not sure this is a legtimate item...I haven't seen it anywhere else and some of the quotes attributed to Spielberg don't sound like things he'd say...anyone see this anywhere else?)This doesn't sound like Geisha to me. As far as Spielberg directing a prequel, well...stranger things have happened. I highly dount it, but...if it is legitimate (which again I stress is only speculation), perhaps Spielberg is being named because of his experience on SPR...I mean, if all the early legends on the prequel trilogy are to be believed, Episode Two involves the Clone Wars, correct? Perhaps Spielberg would be brought on to stage massive battle scenes...I mean, David Lean size battle scenes. And maybe George feels that only his buddy Steven would have the experience to be able to stage such a large scale production. Of course, that's just geek-talk. Additionally, there was an item posted somewhere (last couple of months) from a foreign correspondant that talked about how Spielberg was scouting locations for a movie about Rome. Anyone remember that? Additionally, there is the rumor that has Tom Cruise clearing a hole in his schedule to work with Spielberg this summer. Speculation was that it was the Nicholas Sparks novel "The Notebook" however, nothing substantial has surfaced. As far as episode two filming so soon...it surely is possible...however unlikely...but let us remember folks that we're dealing with unprecendented moviemaking here...when it comes to Lucas, I think anything is possible...anyway, I really have to get to work instead of posting all night long...
-
Now if George has directed Episode 1, and Steven is maybe going to direct Episode 2, then I think John Woo has to direct Episode 3! Yeah baby... slow motion action scenes!!!!
-
I noticed that James Caan wrote one of the star wars screenplays. Is he the same Caan from the Godfather? Could somebody explain this to me.
-
First of all, I doubt this scoop is true but let's just have some fun discussing it.
While it may not be true that ep2 is alredy filming I do think it will certainly start in a next few months. Spielberg for director? Noooo!!!! Please don't let him do it. He would, maybe not ruin it, but surely make it bad, real bad. The remark above that because of his work on SPR makes him perfect for the battle scenes does not stand! There is a huge difference between the two. He would turn the SW into a E.T. or Hook ! Although I'd personnaly wish to see Zemeckis to do it I know he is busy with some other stuff. There is another person, already talked about, that could do a helluva ep2 that is Cameron (Hey, I just remembered that he has nothing planned in near future, or so he wants us to believe...)
For the end I'd like to say something to Fox( The guy who posted here, not the studio) First of all, how dare you use the holy name for your blasphemy. John Woo would suck! Face/off was one of the most overrated movies of last year, and the slo-mo use sucked!(Slo-mo usually sucks because just a few people can do it right but Woo is certainly not one of them)
And for the James Caan - Who cares!
So long... -
I have no idea why your Australian spies said that there is no shooting. I am a resident of Canberra and I have seen part of the shooting for Episode 2. It is pretty much out in the open for everyone to see and it is near civilization. When I asked someone there what they were filming, you'll never believe what I heard. Get ready for this: BLUE HARVEST! Can you believe it! Obviously I didn't fall for this.
-
CANBERRA!! You've got to be kidding. I seriously doubt that they'd haul the entire production all the way down here to do location filming in the single most dull place on the face of the Planet. Are you sure it wasn't a local news crew? I'd also tend to think that Lucasfilm would proberly have a little more sense than to code name a Star Wars film "Blue Harvest", c'mon. Sorry to nitpick, but "Austrailia" is spelt Australia, and I seem to remember that 90% of Australian email addresses ended with a .au as in; com.au. What part of "Austrailia" is your Canberra in?
-
Not to doubt your word or anything Daniel, but:
a. my sources in all of the film and telvision offices know nothing about this (and if it was going on, they'de HAVE to know),
b. my friends who live in Canberra know nothing about this and
c. there is no listing for Shuster in my copy of the Canberra White Pages or on the www.whitepages.com.au web site.
The person who is closest to the mark is the un-named contributor at the end of the article. Lucas is in town with Rick McCallum for the Screen Producers Association of Australia conference (I'll be seeing him there), to present an award at the AFIs on Saturday, to inspect the Fox Showground Studios PRIOR to production and to scout locations.
Production ain't happening until well into 1999 AT THE EARLIEST. Take it from someone in the business and stop spreading stupid rumours.

Whooaahhh! back up people, in
an official interview with Lucas months back in the official starwars magazine, he stated a flat no to the question of Speilberg directing any of the prequels. However, I'm not sure whether to be thrilled with the idea of him directing episide two,
Does'nt anyone out there like me think that even with all the hoopla about Speilberg bigger than ever before, he's changed and not even remotely the same guy who helmed Jaws,Raiders or Close Encounters or even Jurassic Park (did anyone notice how Lost World did'nt contain one iota of the magic of the Jurassic, alot of people have problems with Jurassic but its still got tons of magic and quintissential Speilberg moments) and after the D-Day landings in Private Ryan the rest of the film wasn't up to his former standards, you think about it....... -
Arent we getting a bit ahead of ourselves?
-
You said: "Sorry to nitpick, but "Austrailia" is spelt Australia"
Well, "spelt" should really be "spelled". As long as we're nitpicking... -
Ok, if John Woo were to direct Episode 3, I think I would have to drop a nuke on George Lucas.
-
Steven will NOT direct any of
the prequels....it will either
be the Guy who did "Seven"
or the guy who did "Event Horizon"
Theforce.net posted many weeks
ago that these guys were invited
by Lucas to see the work being
done en Ep1.
Sure, Steven was invited, but
George was just letting him
know that he still has the touch! -
Spielberg is a fantastic director - or at least he was in the late 70s/early 80s, since when his only interesting picture was Schindler's List, and maybe the battle scenes from Saving Private Ryan. He always has at least some moments of genius in almost everything he does, but I still don't know if he's right for directing a Star Wars film. Star Wars is highly distinctive, and so is a Spielberg movie, and there would probably be a clash of styles if the two came together. Would it stay a Star Wars movie, or would it turn into a Spielberg film, or an uncomfortable mish-mash of the two? I don't know, maybe Spielberg and Star Wars would be unbelievably fantastic if brought together - maybe it would if you consider the fact that the new Star Wars trilogy is probably going to breathe new life into the world of cinema, and start another golden era of superb films like Close Encounters, Raiders and ET, like it did in 1977. If this is the case, maybe it will bring Spielberg back on form again, reminding him of his earlier days and the unsurpassed quality of those earlier films. (All very speculative, of course).
As for James Cameron directing an episode of Star Wars, there might be the same 'clash of styles' there as well. But if Lucas could convince Cameron that HE was right, or if they could find a way to work amicably together, then a Cameron-directed Star Wars would be brilliant. We all know Cameron can tell a story, and he's a determined pusher of special effects that support the plot, just like Lucas.
Anyway, I thought Frank Darabont of Shawshank Redemption fame was directing Episode II, or did he just help with the script?
Anyroad, got to go home soon and watch 'Men Behaving Badly'. -
What could be more distressing than a rumor that Steven Spewberg, the most over-rated, hackneyed director ever, may be directing Episode 2? Uggghhhh. SS hasn't made a good movie since "Last Crusade." What makes anybody think, that moviemaker-by-number-schlub can do justice to a Star Wars movie. As one reported once put it, SS is "the confectioner of pop culture." His movies are exact duplicates of each other, with little variations in setting. I guess if we want brainless hokum for EP2, then we'll get it with SS. It'll be great, a Star Wars movie ruined and made to look like his other garbage like Jurassic and Priv. Ryan.
Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and Lucas will find a real director to do EP2. -
To the guy who was dreaming about the sequel trilogy: Sorry, both Lucas and McCallum have said in official interviews that the good old triple-trilogy concept has been abandonded, and that episode I-VI is all we'll ever get. I hate that; by the time Lucas would be ready for those sequels, the old cast (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher etc.) would be ripe! They could play the older versions of the characters with no makeup... Would that rule or what?
About script writers: Wowow, what's this about hiring a writer for the ep. II script? It's already completed! And I am so SICK OF LUCAS SCOUTING FOR PEOPLE AMONG THE GODDAMN YOUNG INDY CREW! Young Indy sucked bad. Why the hell can't Lucas look beyond his puny little Young Indy family... That's where he picked up McCallum, btw.
About spoilers in general: I've been pondering this about spoilers and the web. People usually whine about spoilers because they don't wanna squat about the film beforehand. Is that really all that new? Hell, I had all three films of the "old" trilogy spoiled decades before the Internet was heard of. When I was 10, Mom gave me the Star Wars comic book (uhuh, it came out in Sweden before the film!) and I knew it by heart when I saw the film. Did I care? Nope. Same thing with ESB; got the comic b4 the film and knew that Vader was Lukes father when I walked into the theater. Did I care? A little, but it didn't kill me. And I saw tonnes of pictures, articles, storyline descriptions and etc etc about ROTJ before that came out. My point?
See, you Americans are the only ones who get the friggin CHANCE to steer clear of spoilers. We Europeans don't. Films open a lot later here, from one to seven months later, but we get the friggin' news from you guys with a 300 millisecond delay (at most). Now, Episode I will open in July over here. In the time between May 21st and July *whatever* there is no way on earth I can avoid hearing/seeing tidbits from the film. I can pull out my modem by the cord, disconnect the phone, shut the letterbox with gaffer tape, put on black shades and earplugs, but it won't matter. I'll be caught off guard by frickin GRANDMA who'll say "Did you know that the new Star Wars film ends with a scene where....."
/bLANk -
guys, give it up, you know hes the SP is the guy who can do it all, if Lucas can do something SP can do it as good if not better. How can you forget the guy who has brought you some of the best movies the world has ever seen. Do not tell me scenes from every movie and that was the only good thing about 'em. All of you go to watch the whole movie and you know how good each of them is, he can give you what you want!!!! and you all know that. Lucas got a concept and he kept at it. Speilberg diversified and by doing that he did a lot better than Lucas, I cant ever imagine Lucas doing Jaws or Jurassic or SPR, these movies are good in their own way SP made em , they are totally different from each other and that shows how different he can be!!!!!!
give the man a chance!!!! He will deliver!!!!!!!
(if he evr gets to do it) -
Blake, you wrote --
>> You said: "Sorry to nitpick, but "Austrailia" is spelt Australia" Well, "spelt" should really be "spelled". As long as we're nitpicking... <<
To nitpick one more time, you should have put "Austrailia" in single-quotes since you put the whole sentence in double-quotes. Also, the period after "spelled" should go within the quotes instead of outside them. Also, the ellipsis at the end needs one more period since it's at the end of the sentence.... :-) -
There are a few little things I'm dying to say. First to the utter moron who said Spielberg hasn't made a good film since Indy 3: You can tell me the Jurassic Parks sucked, you may still have my attention if you say SPR sucked, but if you're trying to tell me Schindler's List sucked, then there is something wrong with you.
I have to say that Cameron would be a terrible director for ep. II. Cameron is a good director in his own right, but he is all wrong for a star wars film. He would work with Lucas for about a week before his ego got in the way, and he changed everything to the way he wanted it. I won't even touch John Woo as a director! -
First of all, if Episode 2 is indeed about the Clone Wars, then that battle scene will be the best ever!!!!!!(forget SPR!!!!) Also, Spielberg is an excellent director, although ET wasn't the best and Amistad was boring. It would be pretty good if he actually directed Episode 2. If Paul Anderson (the director of Event Horizon, not Boogie Nights) directed Episode 2 then it would be really crappy. Just Give me the money instead of blowing it all in a hack like him. Just think of Soldier!!!!!!!!! Also, does any one else know of the rumours that James Van Der Beek (Dawson) will play Anakin in Episodes 2 and 3. That would be pretty cool. The only other young actors i could think of is Matt Damon or Ben Afflek. If ever they select Leo for Anakin, then please, somebody drop a nuke on Lucasfilms.

Hasn't David Fincher been rumured to direct Ep2? If this is true he would be perfect for the job, Ep 2 is supposed be the darkest SW movie out of all the movies. Seven was awsome, The Game was creepy as hell, and Alien 3 really wasn't that bad, it was the perfect ending to the series, in fact the direction is the only thing that saved it!!! David Fincher all the way!!
-
I just wanna say something to Tony Chevalier and all those who defend Spielberg. Are we speaking about the same guy? The guy who made Jaws, Close encounters and Indiana trilogy? These movies were only acceptable ones. All others were just a mushy pile of fake emotion-filled crap.(Okay that's maybe to harsh but it's not far off.) As for the guy who said that Schindler's list was the best movie he made...That is B.S.! The list is the perfect example of the mushy pile of fake emotion-filled crap. It got an oscar just because of the theme and the jewish lobbi.
(empire of the sun was better than the list.)
About the other directors mentioned, Paul Anderson ?!? Nooo!
The guy is a loser, I haven't seen soldier yet, and I'm not giong to before it gets out on video but I can still say the guy is hopeless.
About Cameron's ego overtaking the project, that could happen but that is exactly why his movies are soooo gooood.
That's all folks
P.S. You spelling and grammar nitpickers - STOP nitpicking!!! -
David Fincher creates worlds that are all his own- his movies fuck with my head.
-
"Australians are a cowardly superstitious lot...", it's true, in fact right now I'm not using a computer to write this, I'm actually banging two rocks together, then the
"Great Land Snake" hears this primative crooks mad tappings and turns them into data to send over the vast sea to the far off land... RE: nitpicking, I brought that on myself, but here we use the UK version of "spelled" which is spelt, like when we spell "color", here it's "colour", no excuse, I shouldn't have been that anal in the first place. -
George Lucas did an excellant job with ANH, but The Empire Strikes Back is this my favorite. I am not suggesting that Fox get Irvin to direct Episode Two, but they should definitely find someone you wouldn't expect. I think Iain Softley would do a fine job, or even Ted Demme.
-
Just wanted to say that i really doubt that Spielberg will direct Ep. II as he has earlier stated that he could never do a movie about evit aliens.
As far as James Cameron goes... Isn't it more important that he makes T3?
-
My money is that since II is the only 'up' film of the prequels it won't be directed by Fincher, I'm betting that II will be directed by Luc Besson and III will be directed by Fincher
-
Hello. Here I am again, eating corn beef hash and reading this site. Jeesh. People, you complain about studio execs making bad choices. Then, you go on to suggest people such as John Woo, David Finch, Paul Anderson and Tarentino for directing another SW movie. GIMME A FRICKING BREAK. Only one man can helm the next Star Wars movies - LUC BESSON. No? Ok, quiz time: Which movie is more like Star Wars? A: Pulp Fiction B: Seven C: Mortal Kombat D: Fifth Element. Question 2: Which of those movies best created an entire world? Question 3: Which of those movies, despite a silly script, was brilliantly edited and woven together. Answer: D! D! D! D!. Give Luc Besson a good script and he'd make an AMAZING film. I mean, Star Wars Ep 1 has already been compared to Fifth Element countless times. LUCAS - USE BESSON AND I'LL FORGIVE YOU FOR SPECIAL EDITION. One more reason. LUC almost spells LUCAS! And one more note/question. Nobody has really talked about the music. I assume/hope Williams is doing it again? And it will be the same, just with new themes? I'm sure he will. Oh, and for Steve directing it, I don't see that happening. Steve was bigger back in the early 1980's than he is now (No? Then be sure to tell me next time SPR makes 360 mil USA alone in 1981 dollars). Why wasn't he asked to direct Empire or Jedi back then? So why would he now? Just a thought...
-
WE'VE cracked the 200 point!!! Less than 200 days to go till "The Phantom Menace"!!!! Geezis, I can see it now, Friday, May 21st, i will be skipping school, (i am a 16 year old junior, soon to be 17) waking up on the 21st at about 5 in the morning, drive out to the Mall of America, (I live in MN), and camp out their till the movie opens, when it opens, i will buy tickets for all of the showings for that day and watch "The Phantom Menace" 10 times!! AHHHHHHH!!!

I am reviewing all of these rumors and speculations about Stephen Speilberg directing Episode 2 and lend little credit to the rumors. He has stated, during his reception speech in which he recieved a military award from the United States Department of the Army, that he is in full gear into pre-production on "Memoirs of the Geisha". I doubt highly that some devious plot to throw fans off the trail of Episode 2 under the umbrella of Episode 1 and Memoirs of the Geisha is highly unlikely. Now - I will provide this bit of information, and will not reveal sources, but I am a broadcast hournalist for the US Air Force in Tokyo Japan, and one of my good friends is developing the next generation for Sony's non-linear editing system. Members of her department and herself travel back and forth to Tokyo and Skywalker Ranch for sales and technical support, as well as technoligical sharing. She asked me if I knew a film director named Robert Zemekis, and said she saw him at the Ranch, just a passing by sort of thing, but when she asked her boss who he was and what he was working on, her boss - to mogul who deals with Lucasfilm, said that he was getting ready to make a movie and was at the ranch for preperations. That is extremely vague and open for speculation. It may by inferred that Robert Zemekis could be considered for directing one of th new Star Wars Prequels, or perhaps another Lucasfilm project.
-
Hey Sithlord 999, I am not trying to start something here, but I remember about a month ago reading a post from a Mr. "George Lucas" who went on to state authoritative things concerning Ep. 1. When I clicked on your "name" the address it gave was for sithlord999@hotmail.com But now that you posted the type of third-person speculation as you did above, then we certainly 100% know that post was as illegitimate as a sperm bank on a busy day.
-
You know, the only thing worse than a rumor is a stupid rumor. Harry, how could you post something this ridiculous about the precious prequels? I highly doubt that episode II filming has begun, since Lucas is probably still completely focused on tweaking Phantom Menace to perfection. From what I've heard at theForce.net, Lucas is taking extra care for every single little element for the film including the trailer. People, please don't speculate or believe this stuff. It's all some lie that an extremely bored person concocted.
-
Did anyone read the NY Times Article from today's "Circuits" section? Aside from mentioning "theforce.net" and not AICN when talking about prequel hype and speculation on the "information superhighway," there wasn't much interesting. Except that they referred to Episode 1 as "Shadows of the Empire"! I can't believe I used an exclamation mark. I feel like Harry, so I am going to go and try to get a life.
-
Forget spielburg and Cameron, those guys would never do it.They are not work for hire directors.i remember reading that Lucas had shown some directors the rough cut and talked to them about what i assume is Eps.2 if o remember right it was david fincher and paul anderson, but after soilder i would scratch anderson, dont forget about Luc beson i have read that lucas likes his visual flair and creativity(5th elements story sucked but looked good besides Luc wouldnt write it)But personally i think that out of these three that Luc besson should direct Eps.2 and Fincher should direct Eps.3 since it is supposed to be the darkest. Also 20th fox has no say about any of the movies GL owns all of them outright all 20th FOX does is distributes them GL is paying out of his own pocket100%.So remeber that he is going to make them anyway he wants and 20th has to kiss his ass.
-
Are you guys all on something or what?
First Spielberg, then Anderson, Woo and finally Tarantino...Jeez, what's next? Woody Allen? (That would be the ultimate slap in the face for every SW fan)
Fincher is okay, Besson too(5th element was the best movie, beside ofcourse the untouchable Contact of the 1997)
Hey there you who saaid something about Zemeckis indeed directing the next movies, is that true? The guy would be perfect for the job.
So long... -
You know what? Spielberg, Fincher, Besson, Anderson, Tarantino, Hell even Woody Allen is fine by me to direct a SW film (ok maybe not Woody). Just as long as Joel Shumacher does not even get near one of these films, I don't really care who helms. I am sure Lucas will pick up someone worthy.
-
Ok, to quote "Red Dwarf", tune into Sanity FM! Cameron! Woo! Tarantino! At least Cameron has done stuff approaching something like Star Wars (the Terminator movies' war scenes) but Woo and Tarantino! No!No!No! This is a Star Wars movie remember! Still Cameron should stick to Terminator 3. As for Speilberg, well him and Star Wars have the potential to be magnificent but remember he has made bad mistakes in the past and with such huge expectation the fall could be a bad one. And besides, back with the first trilogy Speilberg was asked but he stepped back and semi-recently said that Star Wars was George Lucas' baby and that he would leave it to him. Still the guy is a genius and most of his films, in particular "Jaws" were fucking brilliant.
As for episode II and III from what I've heard of its plot they could be really good with great exciting scenes and impressive montages, even better than ep I could be (which I think will be a lot like A New Hope, especially with George Lucas at the helm). The first directors, regardless of subject, who spring to mind are Speilberg, Zemeckis, Fincher or Besson.
P.S. As any SW fan knows Star Wars was originally (at the very start) called "The Story Of Mace Windu" despite the fact that Mace Windu never appeared in it. This guy, however does appear in TPM - so who is this guy and what's so important about him?? -
Blue Harvest was the code name for Return of the jedi!!Tag line:"An experience in terror"!!!They had pins and everything!!
I'll betcha that Eps. 2 will rock!!!I mean-mandalorians, empire rising,Jedis battle, CLONE WARS!!!!!I hear that e2 will feature clones!I always wondered why it was called the clone wars..... I hear old obi-wan battles his own clone(that is ridiculous, unsubstained, idiocy aka-your everyday SW rumor) -
Hey! I saw George Lucas shooting a lightsabre duel between Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey for Episode 7(!)just last week. It was on the steps of the Sydney Opera House (cool) which is meant to represent Darth Mall, an Imperial shopping centre on Coruscant.
You heard it here first!

If Besson signs on I might turn into 'Leon' with a little cleaning to do.......
Why would anyone want Besson to direct Episode 2 or 3. The Fifth element was a gigantic farce as well as an complete insult. The only decent bit was the flying cars and even then, that chase's
structure was poor and not a patch on say the continuity, speed and thrill of the speeder bike chase in R.O.T.J......

Alright first off, I will have to tell you of an experience I had when I watched Star Wars with a Japanese person. Now we all know George Lucas was inspired by the Kurosawa films and all but this is exactly what gets so many Japanese people so excited about Star Wars. Just because George Lucas like the Japanese culture and used the term "Jedi" based on the Japanese term "Jedai-Geki" for the term of elite samurai or Japanese warrior and because the "Jedai-Geki" followed the Bushido code which is similar to the Jedi code, they (Japanese people) believe Star Wars is something that completely originated from the Japanese culture. First off, when I watched The Phantom Menace with my Japanese buddy (Mr. Namba) I simply commented that Obi-Wan is a badass. All I said was, "Damn, he's a bad-ass, going in a fight as a Padawan against a Sith and not caring about getting killed." Mr. Namba immediately said, "You think he's a bad-ass huh? You like his pony-tail?" I said, "Yeah that too, but I just like how he just goes into every situation with determination. Remember how he said to Captain Panaka 'I'll deal with that.' Damn, that just showed how he was a badass." Mr. Namba continued, "Yeah but you like his pony tail eh? You know, that's Japanese." ALRIGHT RIGHT THERE AND THEN I SHUT THE DAMN VCR OFF AND I LOOKED AT MY BUDDY IN HIS FACE AND JUST LOOKED AT HIM LIKE HE WAS BEING A JACKASS. There I was trying to enjoy my movie and this guy tries to imprint the image of Japanese culture on Obi-Wan Kenobi, who may perhaps be the best representation for everything that Star Wars stood for. I was furious cos all I knew was that I was watching my movie, and all of a sudden, this egocentrical person steps in to talk about his culture like it was the best. ALRIGHT FIRST OF ALL, EVERYTHING THAT THE JAPANESE CULTURE HAS DEVELOPED HAD ITS INITIAL TIES TO CHINA. WHERE DO U THINK THEY GOT THEIR LANGUAGE LITERATURE, ART, CLOTHES, EVERYTHING EXCEPT THEIR TASTE FOR RAW FOOD. SECOND, DO NOT ALL JEDI'S USE STRAIGHT SWORDS? WAS THERE EVER ONCE, A JEDI THAT USED A CURVED LOOKING LIGHTSABER OR A KATANA. NOOOO! ALL JEDI'S SWORDS ARE STRAIGHT AND THAT DETERMINES THEIR ACCURACY, SWING, BLOCKING TECHNIQUES, ETC. HAD A JEDI'S LIGHTSABER BEEN CURVED AS IS CHARACTERISTIC OF ALL SAMURAI SWORDS, WUT U SEE IN THE MOVIE WOULD NOT BE THE SAME IN TERMS OF THEIR ACCURACY, SWING, BLOCKING TECHNIQUES, ETC. THIRD, OBI-WAN KENOBI'S HAIR STYLE INCLUDING ITS PONY-TAIL IS DEFINITELY NOT JAPANESE IN NATURE. SURE THERE ARE SUCH THINGS CALLED SAMURAI PONY TAILS AND U CAN ALWAYS CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THEM ON THE SAMURAI'S FEATURED IN KUROSAWA'S FILMS AS WELL AS OLD JAPANESE SAMURAI FILMS THAT FEATURE ZATOICHI: THE BLIND MASSEUSE THAT SAVES THE DAY. BUT U GOTTA BE MORE CAREFUL TO SEE THAT IT IS STILL NOT THE SAME AS OBI-WAN'S. SAMURAI PONY TAILS ARE ALWAYS STICKING STRAIGHT OUT OF A SAMURAI'S HEAD BECAUSE IT IS BUNDLED TOO TIGHTLY AND IT COMES OUT AS A TUFT OF HAIR DIVERGING IN NUMEROUS DIRECTIONS. PLAY "TENCHU" THE PLAYSTATION GAME USING THE GIRL AND YOU WILL KNOW WUT I MEAN. OR IT'S ALWAYS TOO SHORT AND TOO HIGH UP IN THE CRANIAL AREA SO IT MAKES A SAMURAI LOOK LIKE A GORILLA THAT HAS A SAGGITARRIAL CREST RATHER THAN A BADASS. OR IF YOU LOOK AT "GOLDENBOY" A JAPANESE ANIME, YOU WILL SEE THAT GOLDENBOY HAS A PONYTAIL THAT IS FAIRLY LONG BUT RIGHT SMACK DOWN AT THE PLACE WHERE THE NECK IS SO THAT FROM BEHIND, GOLDEN BOY LOOKS LIKE HE HAS A CUTE LITTLE SQUIRREL ON HIS HEAD. SOMETIMES A SAMURAI SHAVES HIS HEAD AND THEN LEAVES A PONY-TAIL BUT THEN IT GIVES A DUMBASS EFFECT LIKE "PRINCE XIZOR" FROM THE CHRONICLES OF STAR WARS: SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE. FINALLY, THERE IS THE MATTER OF ATTIRE. JEDI'S WEAR A FLOWING ROBE WITH LONG WIDE SLEEVES. IN FACT, IF YOU LOOK AT CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES THAT INVOLVE STRAIGHT SWORDS, A GOOD ONE WOULD BE "THE DUEL", YOU WILL ACTUALLY SEE THAT OBI-WAN LOOKS ENTIRELY LIKE A CHARACTER OR WARRIOR THAT COULD BE INTEGRATED INTO THE ANCIENT SOCIETY THAT ONCE DOMINATED CHINA. So let me recap, 1) Japanese people copy Chinese people 2) Lightsabers are straight like the antique straight swords that can be found in China and are not curved 3) The Japanese pony tail that Mr. Namba refered to probably looked like crap (cos it was basically bad imitation off of the Chinese) and comparable to Prince Xizor's pony tail while 4) During the times of ancient China, Chinese warriors dressed in the same exact fashion as Obi-Wan Kenobi did and 5) fashioned their hair style including their pony-tail in the exact , shape, length, and location as Obi-Wan Kenobi did. ALL THAT REMAINS FOLKS IS THAT JEDIS STILL HAVE TO BE CALLED JEDIS SIMPLY BECAUSE ITS FOR THE SAKE OF CONTINUITY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE BASICALLY CHINESE IN NATURE AND OBI-WAN KENOBI WHILE I DO ADMIT SOUNDS A BIT LIKE JAPANESE HAS TO REMAIN THAT WAY FOR CONTINUITY EVEN THOUGH HE IS CHINESE. OOPS I FORGOT TO MENTION ABOUT FORCE OR IN CHINESE TERMS "CHI-KUNG" AND BELIEVE ME THAT WHOLE ORDEAL WITH QUI-GON JINN TAKING ON ONLY ONE APPRENTICE, THAT'S FROM AN ANCIENT CHINESE PHILOSOPHY THAT IF YOU HAVE MORE, IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO TEACH THEM FULLY SINCE YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO CONCENTRATE YOUR FULLEST EFFORTS ON ONE PADAWAN AND THEN ANOTHER WHICH IS NOT EFFICIENT AT ALL AND MAY CAUSE JEALOUSY AS YOU HAVE SEEN IN OBI-WAN'S EYES AS WELL AS ANAKIN'S. HOWEVER, SITH IS DIFFERENT. BECAUSE THEY ARE MORE VIOLENT IN NATURE AND HAVE ALREADY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE DARK SIDE, THE JEALOUS APPRENTICES WOULD SIMPLY DUEL TO THE DEATH AND THAT IS WHY THE RULE CAME ABOUT, "NO MORE, NO LESS, A MASTER AND AN APPRENTICE." FURTHERMORE, I BELIEVE GEORGE LUCAS IN HIS EARLIER YEARS, CLEARLY, I REPEAR, CLEARLY WAS JAPANESE WASHED. HAVE U EVER HEARD OF POKEMON? A BETTER QUESTION WOULD BE WHO HASN'T HEARD OF POKEMON. OK. THERE U GO, THE JAPANESE HAVE A WAY WITH JAPANESE-WASHING PEOPLE'S MINDS. ALSO, WHY DO YOU THINK HE HIRED A CHINESE PERSON TO CREATE THE PRE-PRODUCTION PAINTINGS USED TO DIRECT THE LOOK OF THE MOVIE BEFORE IT WAS EVER SHOT? DOUG CHIANG NOT ONLY PAINTED 1000 PAINTINGS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE ( A WHOPPING 33% OUT OF THE PAINTINGS TOTAL CREATED BY THE ART DEPARTMENT) BUT HE EVEN HEADED THE ART DEPARTMENT ENTIRELY AND EXACTLY FOR THE MATTER OF NEWLY RECONSTRUCTING THE LOOK OF STAR WARS. WITH ALL THOSE JAPANESE ANIMATORS OUT THERE WHY DOESN'T HE JUST HIRE SOME OF THEM? DOESN'T HE WANT A JAPANESE LOOK FOR HIS STAR WARS FILMS? CLEARLY, GEORGE LUCAS IS NOT STUPID AND CLEARLY HE IS NOT JAPANESE WASHED ANYMORE WHICH IS WHY HE HIRED A CHINESE ART DIRECTOR. THIS IS ALSO BECAUSE GEORGE LUCAS UNDERSTANDS THAT JEDI'S ARE BASICALLY CHINESE ENTAILING THAT IT IS ONLY RIGHT TO GIVE THE JOB TO SOMEONE LIKE DOUGH CHIANG TO DRAW UPON HIS CHINESE CULTURE. FURTHER MORE SINCE HE ALLOWED DOUG CHIANG TO DO MOST OF THE WORK, THE PHANTOM MENACE LOOKED EXACTLY WORD FOR WORD AND PAINTBRUSH STROKE FOR PAINTBRUSH STROKE LIKE HIS PAINTINGS, RESULTING IN A GENUINELY CHINESE FEEL AND EXPERIENCE WHEN U WATCH TPM. OR MAYBE GEORGE LUCAS IS STILL JAPANESE WASHED BUT HE IS WILLING TO CORRECT HIS MISTAKES BECAUSE STAR WARS IS HIS ENTIRE LIFE AND HE CAN'T BE LIVING A LIE LIKE "STAR WARS IS INSPIRED BY THE JAPANESE CULTURE" FOR HIS ENTIRE LIFE WHICH IS THE EXACT REASON WHY HE HIRED DOUG CHIANG. AGAIN I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH THAT EVERYTHING THAT SEEMS JAPANESE IN STAR WARS AFTER "RETURN OF THE JEDI" OR I SHOULD RATHER SAY EVERYTHING STARTING FROM "STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE" IS SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSES OF CONTINUITY. THE WORDS JEDI, OBI-WAN KENOBI, AND YODA. I MEAN SERIOUSLY FOLKS, OBI-WAN KENOBI WOULD STILL BE AS CHINESE AND BADASS AS THE MEANEST JEDI THAT EVER LIVED EVEN IF HIS NAME WAS JAR JAR, YOU GET THE IDEA. AND YOU CAN CALL THE JEDI, WITH A FRATERNITY NAME LIKE, "ATO OR ATL OR KAPPA-ALPHA," AND THEY'D STILL BE AS CHINESE, MYSTERIOUS, CODIFIED, AND ELITE AS THEY ALWAYS WERE. ALL IM SAYING IS OBI-WAN KENOBI IS CHINESE BECAUSE FOR THE MOST OBVIOUS REASONS: HE LOOKS CHINESE AND HE USES A STRAIGHT LIGHTSABER NOT A CURVED ONE, ANAKIN SKYWALKER IS CHINESE UNTIL HE TURNED INTO DARTH VADER THAT LOOKS LIKE A JAPANESE SAMURAI WITH THAT BIG WIDE HELMET, YODA AND EVERYONE ON THE COUNCIL IS CHINESE, EVERY SINGLE JEDI IS CHINESE COS THEY USE THE FORCE, YES EVEN THE SITH ARE CHINESE BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAINED IN THE JEDI ARTS AND THEY FOLLOW A GREAT DEAL OF CHINESE PHILOSOPHY. I'D SAY THE ONLY JAPANESE CHARACTERS YOU WILL FIND WITHIN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE ARE THE NEMOIDIANS AND THEIR OBSESSIONS WITH EXPORTING THEIR GOODS=ANALAGOUS TO THE JAPANESE BULK SELLING THEIR SPORTS CARS TO THE US. THE MANDALORIANS ARE JAPANESE WITH THEIR SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY=ANALAGOUS TO ADVANCED JAPANESE ELECTRONICS LIKE SONY AND PLAYSTATION 2. ALSO DARTH VADER AND POSSIBLY QUI-GON JINN BECAUSE THEY BOTH SIT DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND MEDITATE TOO MUCH. OH AND LOOK AT MASTER QUI-GON JINN'S BEARD, THAT DEFINITELY LOOKS JAPANESE. JUST GO TO THE GETTYSBURG MUSEUM AND YOU WILL SEE JAPANESE PORCELEIN ART AND SCULPTURES FEATURING JAPANESE NATIVE MEN HAVING GROTESQUE AND BUSHY BEARDS AS WELL AS SUPER LONG HAIR THAT THEY NEVER WASH.
Ray: The stormtroopers were NOT supossed to be Jedi's you numbnuts. Not everyone with a lightsaber is a Jedi.
Sender: False, George Lucas believes that anyone in his Star Wars films who fights with a lightsaber is because they have extraordinary skill, power, and elegance as opposed to those that use blasters. Stormtroopers used blasters but they were initially drawn with lightsabers and that is very subjective. They could have been a Jedi's match (being able to fight with one entails particular training), per se, but because they finally became analagous with blasters shows that they have less skill, power, and elegance as opposed to Jedi's. All I was saying was those having extraordinary skill, power, and elegance were characters free of a predetermined look. And even if Jedi's were meant to be geared towards a Japanese look (entailing that it was predetermined), than obviously those that believe so (including George Lucas) are falsifying what is called the "truth." The "truth" is that Jedi's look Chinese in origin. I call it as I see them.
Ray: Then you say "Darth vader is definitely samurai like with his helmet so i am not racist."
Sender: That is the truth. In fact, Darth Vader was supposed to have a completely samurai looking helmet with a cloth as a face mask but because Ralph said that Star Wars is futuristic, Lucas thought the technological face mask was a brilliant idea.
Ray: Then you say : "Furthermore, the new obi design far surpasses the old one making him look a lot more sleeker, faster, and daring in design" Geee, would that be because he is YOUNGER now?...Young people and Old people dress differently you know, but still his Costume is practically unchanged.
Sender: You are only catering to what I have been saying all along. Hell, Qui-Gon Jinn was perhaps as near as Obi-Wan Kenobi's age when he was in A New Hope. However, he wore the same costume design Obi did in The Phantom Menace and he looks just as sleek, fast, and daring as Obi. However, Qui-Gon may have looked fast but he wasn't. On the other hand, Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope for all we know died because he let it be. With his age, he had become a great master and he was probably hiding more that we can ever imagine (hell when he died, he was still appearing here and there!) but he certainly looked weak in A New Hope and that's not just because he had wrinkles on his face. His costume inside and out looked very sluggish in A New Hope than when compared to the better Chinese version in The Phantom Menace.
Ray: "Wut is even more intriguing is that Ralph and Doug have been known to work closely together during the design phase and so the original Obi look had been slowly transformed to a chinese look. " Ralph McQuarrie retired from the bussiness, the only access Dough had to McQuarrie was through his paintings.
Sender: No, I am pretty sure that they have become good friends and they analyze each others paintings regardless of whether or not Ralph retired (this isn't construction work). Furthermore, Doug tries to live up to Ralph's paintings through their simple presence, objectiveness, vivid colors, and realism that they convey for Star Wars which isn't too sci-fi but rather with an Earthly feel. Doug may have drawn from his Chinese culture (or Chinese culture research from a simple library) to give Star Wars a historical feel to the Jedi from Chinese origins. What Doug Chiang does not do is copy Ralph McQuarrie for his designs and for obvious reasons, this is the prequel trilogy we are talking about and from what I have seen, there has been very little continuity in terms of design in The Phantom Menace in regards to the original trilogy and I hope it remains that way.
Ray: This is not about pride, it's about customs. Doug confessed he knows very little from the Chinese culture, because he is an U.S. citizen and never been to china or anything.
Sender: You don't have to go there in order to be educated about such a culture or any other culture for that matter.
Ray: I think it is pretty obvious you have issues against the Japanese culture, and that my friend, is what we call R-A-C-I-S-M.
Sender: I am not, I simply call it as I see them.
Ray: But you still say you're not racist...how about comments like these, from your previews email "DARTH VADER AND POSSIBLY QUI-GON JINN BECAUSE THEY BOTH SIT DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND MEDITATE TOO MUCH.
Sender: There is a Japanese word for such meditation when you kneel down like that. Something like Hama-kiri.
Ray: Further, you said, "OH AND LOOK AT MASTER QUI-GON JINN'S BEARD, THAT DEFINITELY LOOKS JAPANESE. "
Sender: That is definitely true. The Japanese were strict as hell in the Shogunate days 1590-1750. They didn't wash their hair and they grew bushy beards as a sign of masculinity.
I do admit that I rant but it is only for Star Wars that I do this since Star Wars is perhaps the only thing that uses a lot of historical background in its making and I can't help but feeling held back when people just falsify the truth for everyone else. I vent the truth sooner or later.
Ray: Star Wars shouldn't be tainted with the subject of race.
Sender: Star Wars would not be the same were it not for the history and the different cultures that numerous races have created over time. If you create something totally bizarre for Star Wars, it wouldn't look Star Wars. It would look too far-fetched like Babylon 5 or Star Trek.
Ray: I am glad you are proud of being of Chinese heritage, just don't take out your shortcomings as a person with other races.
Sender: You can call me a racist China-man all you want but I respect all races, cultures, and the whole human race. But it should be intrinsic for anyone to sense whether someone is just being egocentric or just telling it like it really is.
