Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury game canceled' (updated 10:20pm, 10-28)

Published at:  Oct 28, 1998 5:19:38 AM CST

Glen here @ 10:20pm, October 28. WOOFER just pointed me towards an article
which offers a little more information about the fate of STAR TREK: SECRET OF VULCAN FURY. CLICK HERE to access this article.

Glen here…

Well, suckage abounds in this next message.

A while back, Coaxial posted a link to a preview of a forthcoming computer game called STAR TREK: THE SECRET OF VULCAN FURY from Interplay.

If memory serves, I described the game as being representative of what STAR TREK might have looked like if Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski had been in control. The game looked awesome, colorful and sharp - perfectly capturing the "look" and "feel" of the original television series, while presenting settings, effects sequences, etc. with extremely modern visual sensibilities. I *really* wanted to see how the final product turned out.

But now, *this*. The following message was sent in by GARY SEVEN OF ELEVEN. He says
things are not going so well for STAR TREK: SECRET OF VULCAN FURY.

I have been to the Interplay web site, and …of course…saw no mention of the game’s tribbleations. There is still a "demo movie" posted for it, which can be accessed through this link. I’m assuming this demo may be removed in fairly short order, if Gary Seven of Eleven’s news pans out to its total gnarliness. So if you wanna go look at it, I’d suggest doing it sooner than later.

Here’s Gary Seven of Eleven’s message:

I saw that this was mentioned in your Coaxial section some months back, so I thought you might be interested in the scoop.

Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury, the title that promised to being back the original crew in all its sixties glory by Interplay Productions, has been killed as of 10-28-98. The company has suffered major losses since going public and has decided to cut its losses by shelving its major titles, including Vulcan Fury.

A friend of mine working for the company has stated that no plans are being made to complete this project in the light of Activision getting the license from Viacom as of 2002, and the voice recording of all the main stars of the TV series will not be used in any upcoming project. Work had been progressing for quite some time on this, and although D.C. Fontana and John Meredyth Lucas had been brought in to supply the game with an atmosphere more akin to the original show, Interplay has pulled the plug and laid off its entire Vulcan Fury team.

It looks as if Captain Kirk is truly dead.......

Glen here, again.

I dunno, Gary. I still like to hold on to the hope that the are always…possibilities.

    Vulcan Fury cancellation

    by rebel scum

It's too bad that they had to cut
    this particular game. Knowing
full well it would be a
    bestseller when it would've been
released. I agree with your comments,
    Glen. This could've been a
    remarkable gaming experience.

Interplay, if you want to make
    some serious cash, release this
    game!

    Interplay in trouble?

    by wooffer

For a company that is in serious financial trouble, Interplay seems to be on the verge of releasing quite a few games.

Vulcan Fury Cancelled - But not gone

    by outrider

    About this Vulcan Fury notice,

I work in the game industry in the develoment side as a producer, and I can honestly say that a game that has has that much effort put into it and is so near completion as this one probably isn't shelved. If it is, it will be handed over or sold to another publisher who will complete and release it. A company like Interplay won't allow two years of developement to be wasted without SOME kind of return. Guaranteed.

Christopher, I sure hope you are right!

    by 0007

I myself would put myself in the deepest of debt (several million dollars worth) to acquire the rights to this game. Why? Simply because a few months later I would be filthy rich from so many sells, even if I marketed it as a bootleg game. The hype and advertising over this has been so huge (remember the Oh's cereal boxes this past summer?) that there are literally millions of people raging to play it. And since the original series will always be the best of Trek, how could anyone resist? Interplay is pretty friggin' stupid if they cannot see that they can propel themselves out of ANY financial void with this title in particular. But like I said, Interplay agents, if you are listening, so is my checkbook....

    Interplay denies the cancellation

    by joey

Online Game Review(www.ogr.com) says that the game has not been cancelled, just been put on hiatus. While the distinction may not be very obvious, I think there IS a distinction, because as others here have pointed out, Shatner and Co. probably don't come cheap and they certainly would make back plenty of money. Maybe there'll be more of a delay or they'll sell the finished portion of the game off to Activision, but I doubt the game is gone for good. And, uh, no offense to the staff here at Coaxial, but I find it hard to believe that you could not only scoop all the major gaming news sites by an entire day on a story like this, but even have a 'more correct' story than one of them. Of course if you have actually done all that, more power to you. And to hell with Interplay, of course.

Glen here...alleged "hiatus" or not, I've heard directly from a few people involved with the ST:SOVF project, and as far as they are concerned, the project is "dead".**Glen**

Just read the Gamespot story...Good job

    by joey

Wow, you really beat all the gaming news sites on this one. Oh, well, chalk my disbelief up to the stupidity of the move. I mean, they cancel something like this, but keep the sequel to the horribly awful Starfleet Academy? It must have sold thousands of times better than I thought. Plus, SOFV was delayed at most by a year, which isn't TOO extraordinary a delay for a game nowadays. I can't believe it was far enough from finishing to justify this. Man, I hate Suits.

    Ransom

    by chuck

To me, it's almost like Interplay is holding ST:TSOVF hostage to get better sales out of Baldur's Gate, Wild 9, and the other Star Trek titles coming soon. With the major investment they've put into this product, it is either a dud like Warcraft Adventures or very expensive to produce with many more months of development left. I've really been looking forward to this one so I hope it gets finished.

    Interplay's Insane!

    by shaundonn

(oops, hit enter a little prematurely on that last one).

Considering what I have seen from the two demo movies and screen shots that Tribal Dreams has released, Interplay must be insane to cancel the project. Now I am only an amateur relative to these people at 3D modelling, but they have constructed all of the characters in 3D, as well as new guest characters, the Enterprise, Romulan warships, various space stations, the planet Vulcan, etc.

They have been working for over a year on this project, and with the recording done, they have to have 80% of the game behind them! And look at the money Interplay made off Starfleet Academy, a fun game but not accurate to Star Trek in the least. And if Interplay sits on this too long, this game won't be as ground breaking and hot-selling as it would be this Christmas.

No matter what their financial situation, Interplay has to be insane to cancel the project!

    SOVF Boo Hoo Hoo

    by stranded

Yeah, I can agree, If it hadn't been canceled, it would heave been a ground breaking, jaw dropping game. How do I know? I was working on it.... Interplay moved me to Irvine for the job, I worked for 3 months and *boom* odown come the Axe. We had just started to integrate all the disparate elements of the scenes, and they were looking *good*.

But, it has been my experience that the suits don't really know good from bad when it comes to games. All but 1 of the games I've worked on in my carreer have suffered this fate. And most have been, in my opinion, money makers. But the money men seem to feel that when the going gets tough, fire everyone and pay yourself whatever remains in the budget.

Sorry If I sound bitter, but I *really* liked this title. And considering that SOVF has already restarted twice before, and considering the shelf life of graphics these days, even if IPLY says its "on hiatus", its dead, Jim.
