THE GREEN MILE rescheduled!

Published at:  Oct 28, 1998 3:28:15 AM CST

A source on THE GREEN MILE, dropped me this tidbit about the release date of the film. Sigh... Well, at least this means they'll have all the post-production time in the world to get things like fireflies and Mr Jingles dead on. I can just hear the agonized screams of the fans of this project....

During your set visit you were told that "The Green Mile" was tentatively
schedule for release summer 1999 (end of July) but it has been moved to a
Fall/Thanksgiving 1999 release (no exact date yet). Many of your readers
had
expressed concern that it would be overshadowed by "Eyes Wide Shut," "Wild
West
West" etc... so I thought this might be of interest.

    AHHH!!!

    by chickflick

Say it ain't so!! We Barry Pepper fans are gnashing our teeth (no, really!) at the wait between "Saving Private Ryan" and "Enemy of the State. " But to wait a year between "Enemy" and "The Green Mile....." well, that's just gonna be brutal. Excuse me while I lie down and try to swallow my own tongue now.....

    BETTER OSCAR CHANCES

    by dr strangelove

Damn, I would've loved to see this film in summer 99. As far as I'm concerned, the winter release date will give it better chances of capturing several (if not all) of the major oscar nominations. The director of the SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, Tom Hanks, a story by Stephen King...The possibilities are virtually limitless as to how great the film will be.

Green Mile Woes and Nicole's Got No Clothes

    by dwdunphy

For everyone bemoaning the setback of 'The Green Mile', I say that it's great. It's great! Why? Because we all know how a good Stephen King movie adaption is, and we all know how a bad one can be. If any movie deserves carte blanche treatment, it's this. Of course, I'm only half-way through 'Bag Of Bones' and my opinion could change soon. As for 'Eyes Wide Shut', I get that nervous feeling like when all those Sharon Stonish- Baser Instinct styled movies were coming out saying, "we're mature! It's about the story, we swear..." but it was really all about a T&A peep-show styled Where's Waldo game. I don't care if it's an intelligent script. I don't care if it's done by Stanley Kubrick. I don't care if both Mr. and Mrs. Mapother are solidly behind the project. America wants to see some "boo-bees" and I can't say that I am able to take this film seriously anymore. Sermon is over, please leave some cash on your way out. DwD

    what's the big deal?

    by parp

I don't _get_ the hype surrounding 'The Green Mile'. Did anyone actually read those books? The supernatural aspects of that plot were laughable - how the hell could anybody suspend disbelief to such a degree? Sure the wrap-around story was quite interesting but it's hardly the stuff of great cinema and the pay-off (man sucks pain out of ppl) was hopeless. Just seems like a lot of fuss over nothing. parp.

    G-Mile...

    by abner ravenwood

Firstly, I think the release date is more of a marketing decision than a chance to give the filmmakers more time.

If you remember, Shawshank Redemption came out in the summer and even though it actually stayed in the minds of Academy voters, the producers didn't have a real opportunity to take advantage of that golden Academy rush--which can mean millions and millions of extra dollars for a movie.

With Hanks in the cast, as well as the creative team behind Shawshank, this could be where the marketing is headed.

And although I am a Stephen King fan, and throughly enjoyed the G-mile books...does anyone remember an episode of Amazing Stories...(if I remember correctly, Spielberg had a "story by" credit) that starred David Keith as a death row in mate who could heal people? I thought of that when I read those books.

Which brings me to one of my deep dark movie fantasies (slurp! gurgle!) and that is to someday see the TWO STEVE'S work together on a project.

Spielberg and King have actually met. They shared a dinner together when Spielberg approached King about writing the script to Poltergeist (which he agreed to do but his reps asked too much money...damn! The movie that never was!!!!) But Spielberg has previously expressed interest in The Talisman...but that one isn't nearer to production.

Someday, maybe they will work together.

Anyway, King wrote a script for a movie called "The Regulators" (which he later turned into a Bachman novel of the same name)which Sam Peckinpah began pre-production on, and died before shooting any film.

The other piece of King movie trivia was that the version of Apt Pupil playing in theatres now wasn't the first attempt at putting that story on film. The first attempt starred Rick (He'll always be Ricky) Schroder and Nicol (great as Merlin) Williamson. However, funding ran out in the middle of production and it was left on a scrap heap.

King was quoted as saying that this was depressing to him since it "was pretty damn good."

In more recent news, King has completed scripts for Desperation and Gerald's Game...and said he might return to the director's chair for Gerald's. He said he'd like another STAB at it.

    I'd be interested in that.

Anyway, I better get back to work....sorry if too long...I'm a blabber mouth about movies...

About The Green Mile and July's WB Movies

    by kubrick

I'm sorry that The Green Mile has been postponed (it had such a great cast and really seemed to be something great to see) and may have actually restored my faith in going to see Warner Brothers movies. After the last two years of bad WB movies, I've sworn never to see another WB movie but
I thought this movie might have changed my mind.
But I did find it odd that Harry didn't talk about The Green Mile opening in July near other movies like Eyes Wide Shut and Wild Wild West. Harry didn't mention the possibility both movies are from WB and coming out in such close proximity with
    one another.
It also didn't seem to concern Harry that those movies might be overshadow The Green Mile or compete with it for the box office
    potential.
This makes me wonder. Does Harry think Green Mile would overshadow both films because it's better than both West and Shut, combined ?
I think this since Harry wasn't as enthusiastic about either Eyes Wide Shut or Wild Wild West as much as The Green Mile. This puzzles me since after all, Eyes Wide Shut is a Stanley Kubrick film and as for, Wild Wild West it is a Barry Sonnenfeld film starring Will Smith. I thought he'd be excited about such movies
on the same level as he's excited
about The Green Mile. Has he got
info that both Wild Wild West
and Eyes Wide Shut are bombs ?
    It wouldn't surprise me, since
    they are Warner Brothers films
and WB has turned out for
    two years nothing but crap.
