Comic-Con: Quint at the PAN'S LABYRINTH panel! DEADMAN, MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, HELLBOY 2 and SILVER SURFER!!!

Published at:  Jul 21, 2006 1:18:35 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The day wrapped up with Guillermo Del Toro and Doug Jones running a panel on PAN'S LABYRINTH, which ultimately turned out to be a panel on all things going on in Guillermo's life, although Guillermo himself seemed sure the only thing people wanted to do was ask Doug about the rumor of him playing SILVER SURFER in the new FANTASTIC 4 movie.

Tidbits from the panel:

- Let's start with the Silver Surfer thing. Doug was finally asked about 3/4ths of the way through the panel about the Silver Surfer rumors. His response was "No comment... I'm so sorry. That's like taking porn away from a teenager..." Let's pause a second and look at his shirt.

Obviously it's a shiny, silverish shirt. He further commented: "I will not be wearing a greenscreen leotard or mo-cap suit in the near future, that I'm aware of... What do you think of this shirt on me? Let me just say I tried this shirt out and I want to buy it, but they're authorizing my credit card as we speak. If I do end up with this shirt, I promise I'll treat the suit very, very carefully and with great respect." Nice, eh?

- Guillermo said that PAN'S LABYRINTH was the film where "my balls dropped," then two ploping sounds came from his mouth.

- Guilermo: Filmmaking is vision plus faith plus balls, all 3 of which Hollywood knows little about.

- HELLBOY 2... from week to week, day to day almost things change. From a go picture to a total no-go. He said as soon as anything goes with it, he'll tell the world. He thinks the script is beautiful, even if it is without Lobster Johnson (Mignola refuses to include him, but Guillermo told the audience to get on his case about it because he wants Lobster Johnson, too).

- MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS... this one might be moving a little bit more, at least Guillermo insinuated it was. He said he was in Romania recently scouting locations for the Antarctica set. He wants to do this movie so bad. Here's a quote: "If you saw the maquettes (for MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS) you would go off into a corner and cry and jerk off... then die." Not 100% certain, though.

- DEADMAN... Guillermo's definitely producing and he said he may step in to direct, but he's more focused on producing for first and second time directors. He feels they're the ones that need the most help to get into the industry and he wants to give new talent a try.

- Doug Jones is doing the voice for Abe Sapien in the animated HELLBOY toon.

- Guillermo was asked a rather serious question by a kid that couldn't have been any older than 14 and he dropped at least 7 f-bombs with his response. It was classic. The audience was in stitches. Guillermo just kind of brushed if off saying, "Fuck is my second language."

- Ron Perlman will have a role in every movie Guillermo does, provided he can pronounce the dialogue.

- Perlman has a part in THE WITCHES film that Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo are doing.

- Perlman has a role in MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS as a dog sled handler.

And that was the panel. The US trailer they played beforehand looked great. I'm not sure if it's out yet, but I really dug it. The fantasy aspect just looks gorgeous. I can't wait to see this one. Okay, that's it for me today. I'll play catch-up with some of the animation stuff I saw today as the Con goes on. I have tons of interviews tomorrow and some cool looking panels. See ya' then.

-Quint

Note to FF2 filmmakers. Cast Doug jones

    by industrykiller

it would go a ways into building some cred after the shit first film. I still think the movie will suck but i will still buy a ticket to see an accurate Silver Surfer and I think Jones is perfect

And no to him as Abe Sapien in Hellboy. Make Abe correct, please! Do yourself a favor and read a Hellboy comic.

    I'm in Clerks 2 Bitches !!!!!!!

    by darth evil dead

Well not physically...But my name Darth Evil Dead is in the credits. Kevin Smith rewarded his Myspace Friends (Tell me that does not sound gay), by putting them in the credits of the movie. After the official credits roll. The View Askew Logo comes up..Then the fan credits roll...And they roll faster then my Mom rolling a dubie. Anyways double D..all the way on the right ... There it was "Darth Evil Dead". Awesome... Saw the film at 12 AM last night.. With a bunch of rowdy motherfuckers that laughed at every punchline. If this movie played to a regular PC audience..I dont think it will get as many laughs as this audience gave.. It was a Kevin Smith audience. And we loved it!! Whats a Kevin Smith audience... Well its middle age dudes.. That probably live with their moms, think everything sucks, and just talk about sex and pussy all fucking day long!!! Yep..and what the hell is wrong with that? Well all for the living with the mom thing.

Clerks 2 is that movie, that tells people.. Its time to fucking grow up loser !!! Yeah its fun to be a kid. Fuck around and shit with your friends. But one day, its time to become an adult. You have to grab life by the horns and become a grown up. Not everyone can walk around this world and be K-fed or Paris Hilton and do nothing !!.. You got to accept some responsibility one day. We all have to. Sure I want to fuck around, watch movies, talk shit, and play sports and videogames all the time. But I looked down the tube of a gun one time.. And had to decided. Do I want my life to be like this forever. And amount to nothing. Or choose a direction to greatness, and try to leave a mark on this rotating rock. Thats the point I got from Clerks 2. But besides that BS.. We get discussions of Porch Monkey's, Star Wars vs The Rings Trilogy, Pussy, and Animal Love. Kevin even pokes fun of his own movies a couple of times in this movie. And had a dance sequence right out of The Blues Brothers. Also alot of Ro Dawson's boobies bouncing up and down.

Ofcourse Jay and Silent Bob Returns, and they do not disapoint. Jay has a Silence of the Lambs moment that made the audience shreek in Horror..That was amazing.

All and all this is a great fun film.. Its a Kevin Smith film. If you dont get Kevin's humor, and talking about Pussy, Queers, Blow Jobs, and Cunts for an hour and a half. Then you might not like this movie. But if your a fan like me...You will love it.

Make sure you watch the credits..If you joined Mobbies on Myspace your name will be there. Also there are some funny movie facts about the cast written by Kevin. And of course it states in the end..That Jay and Silent Bob might Return in the future (a 007 tribute). And for all us fans..we hope its real soon.

Again see my movie trailer at http://youtube.com/user/DarthEvilDead

    by godoffireinhell

That one's dead, talbuckin, and been that way for a good while. Actually del Toro never managed to get the rights to it, though he (or rather his lawyers) were trying to for years. In the end, Otomo and his publisher and their respective lawyers said "Ie" ("No") and that was that. Same thing happened with Tim Burton's MAI THE PSYCHIC GIRL. Seems that if you want to make a live action film out of a manga in Hollywood your name has to be James Cameron. Or Steve Wang.

    Del Toro and Lovecraft

    by abin sur

I have a strong feeling that "At the Mountains of Madness" will be a defining horror/sci-fi movie for the 21st century, much like Carpenter's "The Thing" was for the later part of the 20th. It's awesome he's doing this flick...the only thing better would be to hear that he's doing the Lovecraft triumverate ("The Dunwich Horror" and "The Call of Cthulhu"), which would most assuredly OWN. If anyone has any doubts that he can capture the nightmarish images from Lovecraft just look at those tentacles coming out of the clouds in "Hellboy." Del Toro will NAIL it!

    At the Mountains of Madness

    by fiester

Is an H.P. Lovecraft novel. A classic. It has nothing at all to do with the crappy Sam Neil horror movie about a crappy horror writer.

    Cyclopean idea

    by staldo

Has anybody ever noticed that the end of Disney's Little Mermaid is a total ripoff of H.P Lovecraft's call of Cthulu? (plunging a ship into giant, squidlike creature)
Madness could make a horrible movie, even in Del Toro's hands. There is no payoff, only suggestions of the deeper horror that the characters don't want to approach, and pages and pages of repetitive exploration(the giant mutant penguins could be cool though) What Madness needs is a screenplay that takes that extra step that the story only hints at, and actually approaches the epicenter of the city, where that purple glow was coming from. Like Peter Jackson did with the Halls of the Dead sequence in Return of the King EE.

    "maquettes"

    by omegaman

"maquette - A maquette is a small scale model for a finished sculpture. It is used to visualise and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full scale sculpture.".... Had to look it up. I thought maybe "maquettes" were some kind of weird monsters that Lovecraft dreamed up lol.
