Comic-Con: Quint has tons of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES info + 4 character posters!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2006 10:20:44 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an update on the Warner Bros Animation panel from Comic-Con. Lots of news on the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES CG movie and some footage from ANT BULLY. ANT BULLY will be in another report, this one just has Turtle Power. Let's get to it, shall we?

Directory Kevin Munroe took the stage and showed a trailer (which is supposed to be up on Apple.com right now!) and then showed a 5 minute piece. In-between he answered a bunch of questions. You can see the trailer, so I'll describe some of the footage we saw after these tidbits gleaned from the panel.

- Release date is March 30, 2007

- Mako is voicing Splinter!

- Wouldn't reveal the voices for the Turtles (When asked, Munroe said, "Robin Williams is doing all the voices... No! No! Just kidding! Don't go and blog about that!"), but said all 4 actors aren't celebrities

- When they recorded the dialogue they had all 4 voice actors in the booth, which resulted in a much more natural back and forth between these mystery voice actors, who Munroe said were very sharp writers themselves. Lots of improv and natural reactions.

- Peter Laird is the "Godfather of all things Ninja Turtles" according to Munroe and he had to sign off on Munroe's involvement and has been constantly giving advice on the film

- Munroe wanted a sense of family with the Turtles. Quarreling brothers, etc.

- A little like SUPERMAN RETURNS this film kind of fits in after the 2nd movie, but there will be nods to the cartoon and previous films (including 3), but will be a "rebirth" of a movie

- TMNT will be an action comedy, but Munroe was quick to point out that the comedy comes from the characters, not fart jokes

- No Vanilla Ice

- No Corey Feldman (but Munroe made sure not trash talk the Feldmeister)

- Shredder is NOT the bad guy

- The universe is a bit more realistic, set in a world most like the first feature film.

- Casey Jones and April O'Neil return and the movie builds on their romance

- One person asked about full turtle on human bestiality in the film. Munroe: "No! Security!"

- John Woo? As far as Munroe knows, Woo was never officially attached. He said he thought it was just a rumor.

- Marco Beltrami is scoring! And he wants to give Ninja Turtles a theme as powerful as Elfman's BATMAN theme.

The exclusive presentation wasn't a huge deal, but we saw lots of glimpses at stuff... Bat monsters, lithe ninja chicks, big armored dude (not Shredder). Saw some work on Splinter. He's less extreme looking than the turtles. Still a big rat, a little more furry than the cartoon Splinter, but not as bizarre and dirty looking as the movie version. Mostly the footage was lots of tests and unfinished shots of the Turtles jumping around. There were facial tests of all the turtles making different, funny faces, a cool looking "muscle test" that had Leonardo lifting something heavy up, showing the bulging muscles and straining veins.

There was a scene of Michaelangelo in a fake turtle suit at a kid's birthday party. His legs were his own, but there was a fake zipper down his middle and fuzzy big turtle head on his own. The kids beat the hell out of him and he said (to Donatello who was speaking to him via an earpiece) "Why can't I hit 'em back?" Then he got beat up by the rowdy kids. They were called away for "more sugar" by the mom and Mikey slowly curled himself up into a fetal position.

The final shot had grey-scale Raphael and Leonardo standing on a rooftop, facing each other down for some unknown reason. Raphael had his sais out, Leonardo has his katana out. The charge each other, seemingly very serious, and just as their weapons look to collide they cut to black.

Got a few more reports to finish up before my day's over. Check 'em on the main page over the next couple hours.

    by beageal

That proposition really, really sets my balls a-tingling. Especially if, as he says, he's focussing on the family aspect (as I think he should). It'd take something big for two Turtles to fight each other (something which I don't think I've ever seen in any of the iterations -- barring any possible "possessed Turtle" storylines). I've always thought TMNT had way more potential than ever the great first movie offered. Sounds like this Kevin Monroe fellow may agree. Hope he pulls it off.

And I dont even know the story yet. I remember lining up opening night for the first (and best) Turtles movie. And this quasi sequel thing sounds good. I dont care if Shredder isnt directly part of it. Because we all know that either after the credits roll, or right before. We are going to be teased with a return of Shredder. I'm fucking primed for this movie, BRING THAT SHIT! AND RAPHAEIL KICKS FUCKING ASS! Roof Scene on Ninja Turtles one! Fucking Classic Cinema that was!!

the too soon thing? let me explain

    by slappy jones

On september 11th 2001 a group of muslim extremists hijacked a 4 planes and committed the biggest act of terrorism ever seen on american soil. 2 of the planes hit the twin towers and another one of them was flown into the pentagon. These acts lead us into a war ofThe last of the 4 planes, United 93, crashed when the passengers decided to fight back.
They had heard about the other planes and started to piece it together that this was no highjacking with a possible happy ending. These terrorist werwe not going to land the plane somewhere and make demands....they were going to use it as a weapon....possibly against the whitehouse. The passengers then fought back to take over the plane and it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. There were no survivors. A film titled United 93 was released earlier this year about this flight and the tragic events that unfolded that day. When trailers first appeared for the film in cinemas reports came in of people yelling out "too soon" and it took off as a jokey catch phrase which gets used here all the time. You will see other examples of this type of thing throughout the site. Tomboy beanpole...hulk hogan references.....bobm in ribcage...it is teh suck....I might have got that one wrong but there are a lot of them.

One thing we can agree on...

    by citizin_insane

That Michelangelo doesn't kick ass. He was just the smart arse punk that provided the comic relife... I myself am a Donatello, for the simple fact that I could use a broom to be his quater-staff. Otherwise, my friend used branches for katana's, garden forks for sai's, and the nun-chucks were always a problem. We tried taping string to two bits of wood...

    Realism

    by dersu

"The universe is a bit more realistic, set in a world most like the first feature film."

Yes, because something called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" just screams "realism." The only version of "Ninja Turtles" that I've ever liked were the original Mirage comic books and the one issue of "Bodycount" I read some years ago (although I haven't read the Image comics, so I have no opinion there). They were virtually never realistic, just entertaining. The TV shows and movies have all ranged from bad to really bad. What hurt them is that they were too damn childish. I'm hoping that this movie is far more in line with the original comic books and isn't afraid to go in directions that the other screen versions wouldn't. I honestly wish they were going for an R-rating, but I strongly doubt they will. I just hope the filmmakers follow the Image comics' tagline of

Who was waiting for the pizza delivery man in the sewer in the first film? Donatello? Or was it Michaelangelo? They uttered the immortal line, "Pizza Dude's got 30 seconds." I think about that scene every time I get delivery anything. It is all too much a part of my childhood.

I've never read the comics, so I can offer no opinion there. But the first film was an essential piece of my cinematic upbringing. It is and always will be a kid's movie and any follow-up should continue that tradition. I think a PG-13 should be as far as they should go. And when they are talking about realism, they are talking about the world in which the turtles live. That means no Vanilla Ice. No organized crime syndicates run from warehouses filled with youngster Tony Hawk wannabes. No time travel. As far as the cartoons are concerned, this also means no Kang. That is certainly a good thing.

    I'm in Clerks 2 Bitches !!!!!!!

    by darth evil dead

Well not physically...But my name Darth Evil Dead is in the credits. Kevin Smith rewarded his Myspace Friends (Tell me that does not sound gay), by putting them in the credits of the movie. After the official credits roll. The View Askew Logo comes up..Then the fan credits roll...And they roll faster then my Mom rolling a dubie. Anyways double D..all the way on the right ... There it was "Darth Evil Dead". Awesome... Saw the film at 12 AM last night.. With a bunch of rowdy motherfuckers that laughed at every punchline. If this movie played to a regular PC audience..I dont think it will get as many laughs as this audience gave.. It was a Kevin Smith audience. And we loved it!! Whats a Kevin Smith audience... Well its middle age dudes.. That probably live with their moms, think everything sucks, and just talk about sex and pussy all fucking day long!!! Yep..and what the hell is wrong with that? Well all for the living with the mom thing.

Clerks 2 is that movie, that tells people.. Its time to fucking grow up loser !!! Yeah its fun to be a kid. Fuck around and shit with your friends. But one day, its time to become an adult. You have to grab life by the horns and become a grown up. Not everyone can walk around this world and be K-fed or Paris Hilton and do nothing !!.. You got to accept some responsibility one day. We all have to. Sure I want to fuck around, watch movies, talk shit, and play sports and videogames all the time. But I looked down the tube of a gun one time.. And had to decided. Do I want my life to be like this forever. And amount to nothing. Or choose a direction to greatness, and try to leave a mark on this rotating rock. Thats the point I got from Clerks 2. But besides that BS.. We get discussions of Porch Monkey's, Star Wars vs The Rings Trilogy, Pussy, and Animal Love. Kevin even pokes fun of his own movies a couple of times in this movie. And had a dance sequence right out of The Blues Brothers. Also alot of Ro Dawson's boobies bouncing up and down.

Ofcourse Jay and Silent Bob Returns, and they do not disapoint. Jay has a Silence of the Lambs moment that made the audience shreek in Horror..That was amazing.

All and all this is a great fun film.. Its a Kevin Smith film. If you dont get Kevin's humor, and talking about Pussy, Queers, Blow Jobs, and Cunts for an hour and a half. Then you might not like this movie. But if your a fan like me...You will love it.

Make sure you watch the credits..If you joined Mobbies on Myspace your name will be there. Also there are some funny movie facts about the cast written by Kevin. And of course it states in the end..That Jay and Silent Bob might Return in the future (a 007 tribute). And for all us fans..we hope its real soon.

Again see my movie trailer at http://youtube.com/user/DarthEvilDead

TMNT 1 should IMHO be considered as one of the best comic book movie adaptations, right up there with both Spideys, both X-Men, 2 Supes films and Batman Begins... uh, yeah. It rocked! Oh! And back to the bestiality thing, seriously, is it really bestiality if you do it with an otherwise normal dude who just happens to look like a giant turtle? What's wrong with a little mutant-turtle on human action? I wouldn't mind a little green lovin' from one of the guys. I wouldn't mind AT ALL... (then again, they're jailbait, aren't they?)

    Why CGI?

    by johnny drama

I don't think anyone will be able to take this seriously. Comedies, such as Shrek and Toy Story, are the only things that really allow you to look past the fact that the movie is entirely CGI. Every action flick I've ever seen done like this has flossed with a fat bush. Final Fantasy: Advent Children gargle all kinds of diarrhea. I'd much rahter see another live-action Turtles movie - hell, it'd make tons of money just for the nostalgic value. Like someone suggested earlier, a live action + Gollum/Davey Jones treatment for the turtles would be great, but no studio is going to fund that for a franchise that's starred Ernie Reyes Jr. and Vanilla Ice.

Should be good if they're focussing on the characters

    by performingmonkey

That scene with Michaelangelo at the kids party actually sounds funny. Of course, it will depend on things like dialogue delivery. I like that the 4 turtle actors were in the same room. The dynamic would have sucked otherwise. As long as it comes close to the first Turtles movie, that will be good.

Keep skating and forget all these cardboard cutouts around here trying to bring you down! Turtles are the best when they are FUN... Turning it into Sin City (!?) would be total BULL. The comics were dark, but FAR from the adult content many make it out to be. COWABUNGAAAA!!11

CGI for the entire film isn't for me, the only ones I've liked are Shrek(+sequels) and Toy Story.
Turtles in this manner will be an automatic rental for me. Most of the other CGI films Ii've also seen on DVD not at the movie theaters.

    WTF????

    by batcountry

I thought we were getting the Eastman and Laird Dark Horse version? It looked promising until Michaelangelo fell into the dumpster. That's when my heart sank. Why oh why does there have to be comedy? I guess the kidies don't want to see Leonardo chopping off Shredder's head. Screw them. Oh and Rapheal owns all.

"Why oh why does there have to be comedy?"

    by kentdorfman

Oh yeah, because Eastman and Laird had no intention of making anybody laugh when they created MUTATED TURTLES THAT COULD WERE NINJAS. The comic was designed to be a parody of Miller's Daredevil run, parody being, by definition, "A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for COMEDIC effect or ridicule."

    Sin City in look only

    by starblitzer

I want the look of Sin City, not its plot. I just want to see some well-shot ninja fighting in the city, at night, and in the rain. Or at least some abridged ninja fighting.

    by batcountry

I'll take your word for it that they created "MUTATED TURTLES THAT COULD WERE NINJAS" to make people laugh (whatever that means. All I know is that the black and white Dark Horse comics were the coolest thing I collected in my comics days. I still have a charcoal drawing I did of the Leonardo head chopping incident I mentioned earlier. That image will be forever burned in my head. I understand that I and others on here are in the minority in our opinions, as the masses want something more easily digestible. The studios have to market it, and a toy line will follow. But excuse me if I weep to myself over what could have been. Maybe someday we'll get a direct to DVD uncut TMNT, until then, the shrill sounds of "Cowabunga" will rupture my eardrums. Enjoy.

I don't care what anyone says, that scene from the first one, when Casey and April were on the porch at the farm having a little moment, and then the turtles show up and say "It's time to go back," and that music kicks in, was fucking phenomenal. Absolute tops.

    CASEY JONES ROCKS MY WORLD

    by freakemovie

By far the best non-turtle character in the TMNT universe. Elias Koteas was a god for me during my childhood...and I suppose not many people outside of fanatics of the first movie can say that. "Hey--you're a claustrophobic!" "Are you kidding? I've never even LOOKED at another guy!" That's probably the most brilliant dialogue I've ever heard. In my life. Just the news that he's going to be in this is awesome. And Raph and Leo fighting each other...that sounds sweet. No Shredder? I hope he's at least in it, he doesn't have to be the main villain...but either way I'm looking forward to finding out who the main villain is. Anyway, this looks AWESOME. In every way.

"I gotta get master splinter to say that jsut once!" I had a collection of the comics in a graphic novel format my pop had picked up for me just as the cartoon started getting hot with kids. Boy, was that a pivotal moment in my youth when it came to what entertained me. I can't recommend it enough (though I have no idea what it was called or where to get it, it was done by two guys, Eastman and Laird). Towards the end of the book, when Leo goes out into the snowy streets of the city draped in an overcoat and gets set upon by ninjas... whoa. Anybody else remember that?

    by bootskin

If I remember right, that was the begining of the "return of shredder" story arc. And a bad-ass one at that. I wish they would make a movie in that vein, instead of the pizza-swilling crap we're gonna get...
