INCREDIBLE HULK Has A Director!! + Screenwriter Clarifies Reboot/Remake Confusion, But Doesn't!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2006 12:11:24 PM CDT

Reuters says Louis Leterrier (director of DANNY THE DOG and the two TRANSPORTER films) has signed to direct THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

An interesting choice for an obscure project, to be sure. Avi Arad has pointedly implied that this film would be something of a remake, although this recent interview with scripter Zak Penn suggests otherwise…sort of:

"It’s definitely not a remake. We’re not going to tell the origin story of the Hulk. Reboot? It’s harder to say."

So, I don’t know what the hell to think. Supposedly, they’ll be an announcement this weekend at Comic Con. Perhaps we’ll know more then…

    by childe roland

...who cares if they view it as a reboot? For those who enjoyed Ang's Hulk (like me) they can just assume we're picking up with Hulk's life at some point after thee end of the first film (unless he's suddenly married to Betty or his dad's magically alive again). For those who wanted a "Hulk smash!" fest, this will likely be far more up your alley. Everyone wins...unless the movie's just dreadful. Which it very well could be. And then we'll be back to "who cares?"

    by soonago

Glad to see all the Ang Lee love here. His Hulk was more of a drama with comic book elements than vice versa. But I won't mind seeing a change of direction. It's like a band having a different sound on each album; they're still the same band. Now we just need to hire Michael Bay's bombastic ass to make a real Superman movie.

    by dopepope

What a slap in Ang Lee's face to remake this movie that soon. I for one did want to see a more exciting, less contrived, action PACKED Hulk film. But, I applaud Lee for trying to do something unique. But it's weird, there you have one of Marvels most powerful icons, a beast that can litterally throw a tank into the sky, and have him fight a giant poodle. I'd love to see this movie kick plot to the curb, character development out the window, and give me an hour and fortyfive of Hulk beating the shit out of Abomination, and anything else that dare step to him, except poodles.

did a very good job with Unleashed's action sequences, yet definately floundered a bit with the drama. This is obviously going to be the type of film that many wanted first time. It'll be a sugary snack, not a 3-course meal like Ang Lee dished out. Sad.

OK, Ang Lee's Hulk was a bit slow, but it was a gutsy, smart movie, and when the action did come, it perfectly captured the feel of the comics. Giving the sequel to some low-level action hack is just ridiculous. Geez, why not have a Steven Seagal cameo to add to the quality.

with ang lee's hulk that a nasty streak appears on the talkback. I will elaborate. Some believe that under no circumanstances should you make a hulk film that is not full of rampant destruction. What lee did was to at least make the film interesting looking. It says awful lot about those people who mock lees film. Let me say for the third time. Universal binned Mike Frances script especially the scene where the Hulk Smashed Las Vegas as being too expensive. the scene in the Film with the tanks was cool. The movie looked great and sam eliiott was great as gen. ross. I liked the back story between Banner and his old man. The we-want-a hulk-smashathon-talkbackers will possibly cheer when the Hulk destroy a town or too but for me, as someone who wants hollywood to make at least someting creative and different, i may give this film wide berth. this is being made by the guy mad Danny the Dog/unleashed.

This is easily the least anticipated superhero sequel.

The Hulk loses a lot of his personality when he's mute, as he was in Lee's movie and the Bixby TV show. There are plenty of incarnations of Hulk's speech patterns in the comics from which to choose. It doesn't have to be "Hulk smash!" but he's gotta say something between the town-demolishing!

    by rbatty024

When their films started coming out there was such anticipation for them. Each superhero was matched with a promising director (Sam Raimi, Brian Singer, Ang Lee). Each director took the character in an interesting direction, and when they did a sequel even improved on the original. Now DC is the one pushing out interesting movies and Marvel is the Hollywood factory machine. Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic Four, and now X-Men have all been ruined by a company that doesn't care about anything other than making a buck.

....wasn't bad(unless you are twelve). Like somebody mentioned before it was the fucking "hulk" dogs and that crappy ass ending. Take those two parts out and the movie would be very watchable and possibly great if they found a Hulk villian worth a shit. Unless Ang Lee wrote the script or changed it to include the dogs, then he didn't do a bad job.

it isnt that Hulk was shit from beginning to end. the problems were: - the bizarre ending with absorbing man (sort of) and hulk that I couldnt actually see. - the uncharismatic, un-"comic book warmth" of his choices. That includes the dialogue he gave to the cast, and the cold aloof way he shot it, lit it, did the sound etc. - the gamma irradiated dogs. - Hulk being unable to speak so having no character and basically being turned into king kong. .... I dont actually know if Hulk is filmable in Hollywood. Hulk may sound stupid if he speaks, and any attempt to make hulk more realistic turns him into an evil storm that must be stopped (like the Ultimates). I do know that Ang Lee failed utterly the first time for the reasons stated above.

It's a lousy comic about infantile revenge fantasies. And guess what? It made for a lousy movie too. What, you thought a movie about a guy that turns into a monster when he gets mad would be good? "Oh no, dont get him mad! Oh, no!" Dolts. Ang Lee tried to give the Hulk nonsense depth, but there's no deeper meaning that can be taken from that lousy comic. Its a comic for elementary kids who dream of getting even with playground bullies. The best thing they can do is scrap the whole silly franchise and spend money on a decent one.

    by staldo

Name one superhero comic book that doesn't deal, at its core with revenge fantasies. Of course, there is Spiderman. Oh, he's quirky and wierd..and a fantasy about a picked-on nerd suddenly becoming immensely powerful. and Batman-an infantile revenge fantasy...with neat gadgets! Oh, and the fascist pretends he does it to protect innocents!
Of course, there are alternative comics, like Gaiman's Sandman, which seems to be about...sulking in your bedroom wearing black outfits? Or Transmetropolitan, which is every dystopian cyberpunk cliche given the Hunter S Thompson treatment by a gangly-ass underdog journalist.

I hereby declare the name Ricky Henderson to be synonymous with joyless disillusionment.

Oh, and Hulk is unbridled rage and that shit never gets old. David Duchovny for Bruce Banner, and failing that, Steve Buscemi.

Just sounds like they're going to accept Ang Lee's Hulk as the established origin and history of the character, but they aren't going to reference anything from the movie. Or perhaps they are just going to assume people know who the Hulk is for comics and pop culture and just launch into a story with quite a different feel and presentation to ol' Green Genes. Not thrilled with the choice in director. It's like Marvel burned all of their good karma in the beginning and now no A-list directors are interested in working on their projects.

My mom was a fan of the show and she loved it. My step dad was a fan of the comics and hated it. He also hated LOTR: ROTK, yeah....weird. I think they should have had Ang Lee come back. Jesus, the first film underperforms? LET'S REBOOT IT! What the hell? Oh no! Superman is underperforming? Shit man, fall off the horse? Get up and try again. Look at X-Men...good movie, but moody and somber. Look at X2...great drama with established characters, great set pieces, fantastic set up for a triumphant third (that was a total waste of a chance to set up a Phoenix Saga trilogy...damn), imagine Superman dealing with Darkseid or someone OTHER THAN LUTHOR...or Bruce Banner in the game sequel, you played it for Xbox? He was on the run and eventually you took on Brainiac. How do I explain my point? Sorry having a good time with this. Look at the prequel star wars trilogy and xmen. The first set up the players and conflicts, the second expands and progresses, and the third explosively brings the conclusion to the story arc with character developement, you know? (Well, not X3...) We have a great chance to go in a new, exciting direction! Lets take chances and do something new! Imagine Bryan Singer bringing Metallo to the screen or Bruce Campbell or whoever playing brainiac! You guys know you liked Marvel movies before FF4, DD, X3, etc...huh? Lets go back to new ideas, not reboots to cater to the masses, we like to be surprised. Well, thank God they rebooted Batman...good idea to flush that fish down the toilet and focus on when he came home from the petshop...

It's a shame. After resurrecting the ailling superhero movie genre with the help of Singer and Raimi - and taking an even bigger risk with Ang Lee - it's just underwhelming to see them settling with Tim Story, Brett Ratner, Jonathan Hensleigh and now Leterrier. Jon Favreau, though, could do a terrific job with "Iron Man". But they can always change back to their original choice...

    by giggitygoo

The movie was GREAT. It adhered very closely to the tone of the first six issues, while incorporating some of the Peter David psychological stuff. Sure it dragged in bits - I could have done without the weird photo/flashback "I'm having these weird dreams" thing that Bruce remembered from the lake, for instance - but overall it was completely enjoyable. Nick Nolte chewed up and spit out the scenery as the evil dad, and I thought that was appropriate. And let me tell you, as someone who's spent a lifetime not getting angry, of keeping his rage bottled up just like Bruce did, seeing him lose it in the water at the end and scream "Take it ALLLLLLLLLL!" still gives me goosebumps. If you wanna hate on a Marvel film, there's always Elektra and Fantastic Four (shudder), but leave "Hulk" alone.

    by vern

Ang Lee gave you a thoughtful art movie based on your comic strips, you cried that you were bored, you wanted smashing and magic crystals, not characters and feelings and crap. So now they give you the director of Transporter 2, a completely retarded (and actually somewhat awesome) movie with no interest in logic, human emotion or gravity. In fact it fits pretty well with the Jekyl and Hyde tone Ang Lee created (where it switches back and forth between slow character drama and total balls out flying super monster mayhem). This time they go from acclaimed, Academy award winning auteur to the dude who did Transporter 2. I think I like it, actually. As long as they keep Eric Bana it could be cool. They just continue with his character and don't need to reference much else from the first movie. And of course they need to have a more retard-friendly tone so that it will appeal to the core audience of comic strip readers. Just kidding. Unless the shoe fits. (No seriously I'm kidding, please don't burn me at the stake over a pile of X-Men 3 dvds.) Anyway, since Hulk was travelling at the end (in the scene lifted straight out of BLADE) it could be a series of movies where he has different adventures and each one has a different director with a different take on the material.

    Vern, quick, call Avi...

    by childe roland

...'cause your idea for a series of subsequent Hulk interpretations rocks. Plus, it would mirror the ever-loving fuck out of the way the comics themselves have been handled since the explosion of the first Gamma Bomb, with each new creative force trying to leave his or her distinct impression on the character, essentially throwing out everything that came before without actually feeling the need to reboot everything (because what's a little retconning or convoluting between writers?). The bitchful beauty of this concept is it would be the most faithful adaptation of the comic medium to the big screen (forget Sin City, that was one movie based on the work of one writer-artist), and the die-hardest of fans will STILL hate it. You're a genius, man!

Transporter 2 I might could be a little excited but this fucktard lost me after that awful sequel. I'm pretty sure Transporter was a fluke for this guy and for fucks sake people don't care if the movie has character development in just do it in a manner that's worth a fuck.

The Hulk is still the best comic book movie

    by krazy eyez killa

Ang Lee delivered a cinematic winner, although the dogs did add a slight cheese factor. But hey I also liked Superman Returns despite its flaws (most of which are with Luthor)

    Remake/Reboot?

    by badboymason

Seems obvious to me that it will be a continuation in the sense that Batman Forever was a sequel to Batman/Returns - new actors, new villains, completely different tone/direction. We will have Banner/Hulk on the road somewhere getting into an adventure, not contradicting Lee's Hulk but hardly referring to it at all.

    The Original Hulk Pilot...

    by workshed

...still gets me every time. I can't get Bill Bixby out of my head. The key to making us have empathy is that we should care for Banner. Imho casting a hard-faced already-muscular fucker like Chopper Bana immediately got The Hulk (cgi) going nowhere. Surely the point of Hulk was that a 6-stone weaking grows to the size of a house..? At least that was my geek perception back in 1975 when I bought my first ever comic. Avi Arad - i always knew he'd fuck the Marvel legacy up. p.s.I don't often swear but when it comes to my fave comic stip (next to Fantastic4 and spidey) I get MAAAAD!!!

into a coporation and the only things corps care about is money. Alexander Salkind taught this too WB decades ago. Donner Twos Superman movies are being re-edited. Re-credited(ie donner will get his credit for Superman two back again) and restored for Christmas 06.

    The hulk was simply boring.

    by minderbinder

Besides having very little action, much of it dull, it was too much exposition, too much sitting around talking that added nothing to the plot or character development. The actors did a fine job, but the characters were still paper thin. This wasn't a movie that required thinking, this was a generally stupid movie that had pointless dialogue serving as filler (pretending to be "character development") since they couldn't cobble together enough action to make the movie long enough to release. I don't fucking care about a sequel, if they're dumb enough to make a sequel to a movie that did so poorly, they deservve to lose their shirts.

    Well, 'Unleashed' wasn't bad...

    by ribbons

...not sure how I feel about this overall though. The Transporter movies are pretty atrocious, and what with both Zak Penn's and Leterrier's comments that the first 'Hulk' movie failed artistically because it was "too serious," I'm pretty sure both of them are missing the point. Hopefully the man in suit isn't too distracting, in any case.

Avi Arad didn't turn Marvel into a corporation, they always were one. News flash: Stan Lee didn't create Marvel as some kind of charity organization. He did it so he could sell comic books to kids and thereby make buckets and buckets of money.
