Does this mean they're pretty freaked out over how this movie is going to do? I mean 20 min of the movie!? So far I don't know a single person that's planning on seeing this. Even PKD fans like myself. I just think it looks like all eye candy without substance. It's a rental as far as I'm concerned.

    by creasybear

Let me sum it up: Bugs on a druggie, Keanu in a people-suit gives exposition, exposition, exposition, exposition, exposition, exposition and exposition. Then waitress titties, then more exposition, exposition, exposition, exposition, then over-acted druggie humor with a bike.
    You're welcome.

Seen it last week in LA. It's pretty out there, animation is unique but not new. Humor and dialogue feels a little forced. The whole plot's kinda dull.

but if it's good or not I would rather spend a small amount of cash and give my support by seeing the whole film in a cinema rather than just 24 minutes on some shitty streaming media. People quite happily spend their hard-earned on bland crap like 'Cheaper By The Dozen' which in turn gives justification for a sequel but will avoid this just because it looks quirky and thus more bland crap is born!

Of course she's a druggie. Wasn't prescription medication the defense during her trial? Keanu is the only one who's clean, although you'd never know it. Great film though, Downey is a standout. And fortheloveofgod, you'd prefer another shitbag adaptation like Constantine, right? When the revolution comes you'll be one of the first up against the wall. Basement dweller.

Big Bad Clone - About That Scene

    by zadillo

Actually that scene played out almost identical to the book, if I recall correctly. I mean, the whole point is that they are so drug-addled that they can't even figure out something basic like how you calculate the number of "speeds" on an 18-speed bike. I don't think they were doing a poor job of "acting" that out.

cheers AICN for the link, i like to come in these talkbacks and chew the fat and bitch about movies like all the rest but why all the negative Posts!? 20 mins of free movie!? I wasn't sure if i should watch this but it's confirmed that the film is going to work. saw the trailer and it got me interest and now after watching that 20 or so minutes I am sold! it flew by and i cant wait to see it on the big screen. it looks like a walking talking headfuck graphic novel and I was laughing out loud at the lunacy of the 18 speed bike debate, it reminded me of my druggy days when a bunch of us would get high all day and have weird adventures of the most mundane kind, so that shits just plain comical if you can relate to it. Everyone even the Neo guy is great and i didn't think anyone was overacting it all works with the comic book look of the film! shit! I don't know people want to watch these days? I'm sick as fuck of remakes and reimaginings and sequels so this looks fresh and fun and worth watching a few times over for all the cool visuals and dialogue, shit! i want to watch the rest now!

30 minutes of the movie online for free? hahahahaha seriously, either they are begging people to go see this, or they know it's going to flop so they're just doing something random that no other movie has ever done before. The only way to expose a movie to the public and get them to see it is short little clips of the most climactic moments in the film. Not an entire expose!!! Idiots! WAKING LIFE BLOWS GOATS!

and it was a bit jarring. Before that they were being all clam. Keanu was doing his jaded thing, Freck was scrambled as usual, Barris was being his psychobabble self. Then suddenly "BICYCLES!!!!" All that falling over and stuff? I can't belive Kaunau ended up doing the best acting in that scene. Still, the rest of the film looked ace. Will be seeing this tomorrow.

    why so much whining here?

    by waites

I just posted that I am going to see this movie for the 3rd time tomorrow night and I want to explain why. This movie is so much better than most of the crap out there now. And it is very much like the book. If you read the book and liked it, you will like this movie. And why are you all complaining about seeing a bit of it here? so what? why are you even posting on a movie site if you are not interested in seeing something that at least tries to be a good and thoughtful movie experience. This movie asks you to think and try and experience something a bit different. I don't think that is too much to ask but maybe after reading some of the comments here I have to guess it may be too much. All I can say is I am glad Linklater gave it a shot. Well done Rick! and the casting was right on too. Thanks guys. This movie is amazing.

A few years back the first 10 minutes of Mememto were shown on iFilm. In fact, I think they were the first to use this promotional gimmick. There is nothing desperate about this move. If anything, showing the first half hour of A Scanner Darkly only demonstrates the studio's confidence in the film. I don't understand why this movie has so many haters.

With all the shit Hollywood produces every year, why slam a film that at least tries to say something? Could it be this film hits too close to home?

    30s is NOT "middle-aged"

    by zerocorpse

Middle age is typically described as late 40's to mid-50s. We're living longer these days, though, so middle age might fairly be moved up ten years. A person in their 30s is not middle aged.

Put down your toy figures/pacifiers and listen. People see the clip, they want to see more, so they go see the fucking movie when it comes out because people naturally have to be completists when it comes to being teased like this. Think of it as an extended trailer, if you can fathom that in between thoughts of playing Pokemon or whatever the latest lame kid fad is.

    Downey is an amazing talent.

    by doom ii

He gets a lot of negative attention, but as an actor he is one of the best. Two Girls And A Guy was 3 people in an apartment for 90 minutes and I was entertained mainly because of Downey's performance. He is a very open guy when interviewed. He said his famous director dad (Robert Downey Sr) hated actors and that it was ironic that his son BECAME one. Liklater is also one of the few directors out there that will do a commercial film, then go "artsy" on us. Kudos.

    Bobo_Vision: Correction

    by markoohno

Average lifespan was in the 70's, perhaps 80+ if you're lucky about 20 years ago. Today the average lifespan is in the 80's, perhaps 90+ if you're lucky. People born today are expected to have a lifespan well into the 100's (about 130, I believe.) Therefore, middle age depends on when you're born. Right now, if you're over 40, you're technically middle age. Before you know it, you won't be middle age until you're 60 and mandatory retirement will have to be extended to around 95. Anyway, these are serious scientific findings. If you'd like, I could try to find ya a site to back it up?

    Limiting factors for life expectancy.

    by shan

Something about human cells mean that at about the 50th generation division, the stop dividing further, like some sort of time based self destruction. Each new division has less telomeres that the previous and when some critical level is reached, that generation won't divide again, so the theory goes. So, supposedly that limits us at present to about 120 to 130. Also with lungs as just one thing, over time they always lose elasticity as you get older. Live long enough and you will suffocate because sufficient elasticity will have been lost to enable your lungs to work. Once again, around the 130 year mark. Worth noting that don't smoke, because you can push that number down by up to decades, to an age you can actually realistically live to in this day and age.

It's fairly sad to see how few geeks out there are actually simultaneously nerds. Dorkiness without intellect is SUCH a waste (and vice versa.) Comic books are great - LOVE 'em! - just every once in awhile try to expand your horizons with something that doesn't have pictures. And then just one last piece of advice: if you don't like Dick, you probably suck. So please don't suck while enjoying the Dick.

is how sure the idiot haters are that the studio is desperate about the film tanking, when in fact it had the strongest per-screen showing of any limited-release indie flick (on more than 5 screens) since last Decembers's Oscar contenders, and projects to do 25 million or so, which is exactly what Memento did.

    Downey perfect as Barris; Freck/Fabin

    by brandloyalist

The guy playing the merged Charles Freck/Jerry Fabin character (the guy who sees "aphids" crawling all over himself & his poor dog) could have maybe toned it down a little. I guess I did once witness someone tweak out pretty much as bad as that, only more realistically. I blame him for coaxing the snide out of the Talkbackers above (which of course is normally very difficult to do). Judicious reduction, though. Do we get the scene where Fabin saves the kid from being crushed under his car, when he still had his act together? Guess I'll see for myself within the next week or two. Man am I loving Downey though. Thanks Merrick, thanks IGN (and thanks Tubbs for the convenient collectable linkage).

    Damn Fine Movie

    by rbatty024

Saw this today, and I was impressed. The most accurate adaptation of a Philip K. Dick book and my second favorite PKD adaptation (second only to Blade Runner, which, although not accurate, felt as if it was one side of a conversation between the film and the book). I recommend it to anyone who wants to see an intelligent movie, and doesn't care that there aren't explosions every five seconds. Hey, guys don't worry, it may not have the Wayans brothers in it, but it's also really funny at times. It's also funny how pissed off people get when a movie actually tries to make them think.

    Downey Jr.'s acting

    by heyscot

I have to say, Robert Downey Jr. is an excellent actor. He really makes it look easy, but his acting is pretty incredible. Just from the 24-minute clip, I wasn't too impressed with Woody ("Look! I'm ACTING!"), but it was good to see Winona back again.

    Free Movies

    by topaz4206

How can anyone attack this marketing strategy? Movies are one of the few things in life you have to buy sight unseen. This preview is just enough to let you know if it's for you or not. Would seeing the first 20 minutes of THE MATRIX or SPIDERMAN stop you from going to see it on the biggest screen in town? Not to mention, there's so much more to the story. As with all good movies, the last 70 minutes are not just a repetition of the first 20. The story in this film evolves -- give it a try when it finally gets to your town

Looks I disagree w tih the majority again. The movie was great. Surprisngly funny but by the end of the film pretty deep and penetrating. Downey of course owned. Looks like I completely disagree with you.

You know its really sad that while not perfect we have a different, orginal film here that explores some pretty relevant ideas and manages to be a goood adaptation of a PKD story. Yet EVEN that cant do anything but bring out the typical everything sucks ACIN attitude.

I had been looking foward to this...

    by big bad clone

But Quint or someone was saying that most of the film was like the bike scene. And the bike scene was like watching a stage actor play drunk. Or like the kid in drama class that uses an cockney accent for every scene. I will say, that up until that point, it did seem pretty interesting.

    Saw it this afternoon

    by pumpymcass

First off I have to admit that this movie had no chance to be an awesome experience for me. I have been waiting all summer for this movie so when I finally saw it, my own personal hype must have killed the effect a little bit (Just like all you nuts who are obsessing over Snakes on a Plane are going to be soooo let down when it isn't the greatest B movie ever: THERE IS NO WAY THAT FILM CAN LIVE UP TO ITS TITLE!). But it is certainly an interesting film. It is certainly not the thriller the trailer leads you to believe. The first two acts are basically like many other Linklater films: a bunch of stoned people philosophizing about shit. To keep you interested during this you add the confusion as to what the hell is going on with Keanu's character. It is amusing and occasionally funny but not terribly exciting. The mystery of the thing is what pulls you through, but barely. Then the last 20 minutes finally has something the rest of the film has sorely lacked: a plot! But, come on: 90 minutes is a long time to wait before you actually do something cool. So I can see why they animated the film in such a way. They needed to distract the audience from the absence of story. But this laid-back little movie is not bad by any means. It is smart, funny and different and even a little creepy in the end. That is certainly nine bucks well spent in my book. It simply isn't wholly satisfying. It is a LINKLATER sci-fi thriller, which is definitely its own beast. The stoner characters are funny and it looks cool. It certainly pays off. Just don't expect great suspense scenes or to be pinned to your seat, to be shocked and riveted, all that lame-ass hyperbole bad critics toss around. It is amusing and intriguing enough. Shit, if anything you always have something interesting to look at. Check it out. What else were you gonna do, go see You, Me, and Dupree?

funny you mention that judge. It's probably the most painful thing I've seen this year. I couldn't even finish watching it, I was so embarrassed for her. I hope to god she was high because if not, she should get a catscan immediately.

Wow...I'm glad you posted this. I was actually almost going to see the film in a theater. Netflix, here I come. Looks like it should've been tightened a _lot_. I mean, 5 minutes of the dude picking bugs out of his scalp? Might not've been 5 minutes, but it sure seemed longer than necessary.

So, a book written by a druggie, acted out by druggies (by way of someone elses script, but still) is not realistic of druggies. On a fictional drug, I might add. Nice. And the level of ADD among the people commenting is scary; what an intro that doesn

I was probably not going to see this - "Waking Life" was one of the worst, most pretentious and jejeune pieces of crap semi-literate "philosophy" I'd ever seen - but I guess the animation style works, when overlaid over material written by Dick. I guess if you take the Waking Life style and just don't lay it down over asinine dialogue, it can actually work.

    why animation?

    by hypomnemata

The reason why its animated in that "style" is because "style" is totally lacking in all the current animated films nowadays. Animation does not have to be realistic or even try to simulate reality... it can also be stylish and expressionistic and druggy, there is a huge american audience that does not get to see enuf expressionistic/stylish blockbuster efforts and we'd love to see more. The movie storyline exists in a different reality then the ones that are normally portayed in blockbuster movies. The whole point of the film is to acknowlege those "other" realities. Lem's Futurlogical Congress ought to be done as an animation one day. I am very glad that it was not live action... Long live the new flesh!!

Great film ! Saw it last week when it was only playing in select theatres. My observation stands correct -- I didn't expect the majority to understand the animation due to the subject matter. Instead, I read immature responses like going to see a friggin PIRATE movie instead.
