Published at:  Jul 14, 2006 6:55:31 AM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

What can I say? Christopher Nolan continues to impress, and this looks like one of the coolest films of the year just based on this first peek at it.

Can’t. Wait.

"Moriarty" out.

Though I'm surprised they didnt reveal the full extent of the awesome cast. Sure, they show Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson... but this film also has David Bowie and Andy Serkis. Nolan knows how to put together a great ensemble.

Strange and Norrell and Prestige use the same premise but the difference is in Prestige the magicians are illusionists where in Clark's book the magicians are wizards who really can perform magic.
    One's a drama, the other a fantasy.

    by chrth

But the Prestige has been out since, what, 1988? And then Strange and Norrell comes out and is a big hit and all of a sudden a Prestige film is greenlit? Despite the differences, this is how film execs think. Again, the fact that they seem to be actually trying to make a good film (hiring Nolan, going with A-list actors) makes me feel better about it, but I just fear that the execs may screw this up yet.

christopher nolan is like bryan singer but with more consistency, a wider array of talent, and an intelligence usually not befitting of a studio based filmmaker. oh and please stop with that bettany for the joker routine. he would be interesting but he brings too much baggage to the role. i would much rather see christopher eccleston or even sam rockwell take it on. if you are wondering sam rockwell? take a look at all his work, he could pull it off especially under the supervision of nolan. oh yeah, almost forgot, that trailer is quite impressive. looking forward to this flick. glad he didn't reveal all his secrets in this trailer.

The movie looks good. I didn't read the book but I don't need to to see that Bowie as Tesla SUCKS! He doesn't even look like him and Tesla wasn't that old then was he? Andy Serkis is suppose to play Bowie/Tesla's assistant. The light bulbs in the ground is suppose to a Tesla Colorado experiment. When is someone going to make a true Tesla movie? I like the rest of the cast and the director. I think it'll be great.

    Movie looks cool, but... (spoilerish?)

    by bigbadjon

Once I heard that they were making this movie, I ran out to get the book since I'd heard that it was truly excellent. I'll say this, the movie does look awesome. This was an excellent trailer, just the right level of information to entice the viewer, but little enough not to spoil all the cool stuff.

Someone above mentioned that it looked as though a few (pretty integral) things had been changed from the book, and all I can say is good. Though the novel contained a LOT of really neat ideas, and the intrigue was brilliant, the ending was, in my opinion, a MAJOR letdown. It's one of those endings where the author just sort of stopped writing rather than finishing the story. I know a lot of people really like this sort of ending, claiming that "It leaves the reader with something to think about." I personally think it's a really lazy way to write, and come off as though your work was intended to be thought provoking. So I desperately hope that they changed the ending of the story to make it a little less of a "What the fuck?" moment.

This is pretty conventional stuff as far as trailers go, but it gets the job done. And no, THE PRESTIGE is not the same as JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL, unless you think the Napoleonic wars took place at the turn of the 20th century. Oh, and that stage magic is real and involves fairies and stuff. I'd be happy to see good movies of both.

    Just curious, regarding miss Scarlett....

    by theseeker7

Well, considering sort of the irony of the trajectory path each of their careers have since taken from the movie, did anyone else find Thora Birch to be frankly just as hot (if perhaps in a different way) as Scarlett was in "GHOST WORLD"? Maybe just how I can especially appreciate a gal with some meat on her bones, but I thought Thora was WAY cute and sexy in that flick. It just kinda cracks me up that since Scarlett has been the one considered totally the sexpot.

This does look intriguing. I've been waiting to see what this looks like as the premise sounds awesome especially when paired with the actors and director. Can't wait! Memento is one of my fav films of this decade and I hoped that Nolan would continue to be an exciting film-maker. After Batman Begins I was pleased. Looks like this will be enjoyable also, which is funny as the area of magic and illusions are things I don't really find interesting at all.

    by nemesisdarkside

Since American Beauty and Ghost World I thought Thora Birch was hot albeit in a different way to Scarlett. Now while I always (and still) find Scarlett more attractive, I do miss Thora. Now she may be a total diva and/or bitch in person (who knows?) but she always came across as down to earth and had a real, non-Hollywood look and body, which I liked. Just my thoughts...

    by jeebs

"I recently read Jonathan Nolan's screenplay adaptation of the book, and although I read it in confidence I can safely say that it is an extraordinary and brilliant script. If Chris Nolan does go ahead and make The Prestige, I have no hesitation in predicting it will be his finest movie since Memento. I hope that whets the appetite of Mr Nolan's many admirers, as it whets mine!" - Christopher Priest, September 2005

It really IS possible to have a movie trailer get consistantly positive reviews on an AICN TB. The movie looks great. Though I wouldn't want it to be too successful since I'd rather have Nolan working hard to roll out 10 Batmans in succession.
