BUFFY!! ANGEL!! FELICITY!! Learn How The WB Plans To Say Goodbye!!

I am – Hercules!!

The last day of broadcasting for The WB is Sept. 17, and the netlet is saying goodbye by broadcasting the pilots of, among other things, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Felicity.”

Now, the “Buffy” and “Angel” pilots were swell, to be sure, but J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity” pilot was genius, right up there with his “Alias” and “Lost” pilots. It left you dying to see what happened next.

And I would have substituted the incredible "Roswell" pilot for the "Dawson's Creek" opener in a New York minute. But who cares what stupid Herc thinks?

How now will UPN shut down the day before? "Voyager"? "Enterprise"? "Veronica"? "Smackdown"?

Read more of how the former Frog Net celebrates its final hours here.

the reason that Roswell won't be shown..

    by torpor_haze

is probably because WB doesn't classify it as success.

  • June 30, 2006, 1:05 a.m. CST

Dawson's Creek had a great first episode

    by Neo Zeed

So great it was copied and reshot as the pilot for "Life As We Know It" Anyway...Dawson's Creek had 2 very good seasons. Then Kevin Williamson left and it went all to hell. Roswell was ok, I liked the look of the show (it had great lighting..everything seemed bathed in golden light) and Katherine Heigl was mindblowingly hot! The WB's golden years were when Buffy, Angel, Roswell, and Dawson were on at the same time. Then dropped Buffy, cancelled Angel for the Mountain, and know the rest.

UPN should show its entire debut lineup

    by themikejonas

kind of a "wasn't it obvious even back then that we were headed for the crapper?"-a-thon. "Platypus Man," "Pig Sty," "Marker," "The Watcher"...ahhhh yeah, party like it's 1995...

  • June 30, 2006, 1:11 a.m. CST

Life As We Know It was great.

    by Shermdawg

Thats the only non sci-fi teen drama that I watched and actually liked. Peter "DaDinkaDink" Dinklage was great in it. And the show had some great funny bits, mostly from it's gimmick of freezing scenes and having one of the four guys talk to the audience, sure it's been done before, but they pulled it off nicely. Frankly, this would have done well on the WB or even Fox, but abc, just wasn't the right network for it. The only semi-teen related show to actually make it on abc was Life Goes On. CORKY THATCHER FTW!!!

  • June 30, 2006, 1:14 a.m. CST

Good lord I used "great" a bit too much there. >_<

    by Shermdawg

  • June 30, 2006, 1:14 a.m. CST

Wow, they picked exactly the four pilots I would have

    by AshFett

I remember watching all four of those shows on a loyal basis circa 1999. Buffy and Angel were simply awesome, Felicity was a really well done show and Dawson's was for awhile there the 91201/OC zeitgeist guilty pleasure teen soap of the moment. Very classy move WB.

  • June 30, 2006, 1:28 a.m. CST

    by Hairy Nutsack

Do you think they'll end the evening with Angel and then show that "Thanks from your friends at the WB." message? Yeah thanks friends, you guys might still be going strong if you hadn't of cancelled Angel. Say, why aren't they showing the pilot episode of Birds of Prey?

  • June 30, 2006, 1:32 a.m. CST

Roswell was only on WB for two seasons

    by snowpuff

And then was picked for one season by UPN, making this one of two shows to air new episodes on both nets (the other of course being Buffy). As excellent as Roswell was, can't imagine a show that WB dropped after two seasons being on their minds. Incidentally, I saw Shiri Appleby at [store] the other day. Name removed to protect the most beautiful girl in the world.

    Where's the Star Jones news?

    by veritasses

That b!tch Star Jones leaves/gets kicked off the airwaves, has a cat fight with Barbera Walters and it's not reported on AICN? That's the best thing that's happened to free TV since Magic Johnson lost his talk show. It's only a matter of days before we see her sorry @ss on The Surreal Life. Oh, and Buffy and Angel were (for the most part) good shows season after season but Felicity took a nose dive into boredom real quick. And while Voyager and Enterprise turned into big disappointments, I hope someone - maybe on the SciFi channel - revives the Trek franchise with more of a BSG type of feel.

  • June 30, 2006, 1:54 a.m. CST

Life as we know it may have been "great"

    by Neo Zeed

I just couldn't get past the pilot where they shamelessly ripped off Dawson by 1. Having the mom cheat on the dad and getting caught by the son and 2. The whole teacher/student relationship. But hey the other episodes could have been good. Anyway, UPN never had a shot. "Marker" with the Greico was shitty and so was Sir Mix-A-Lot's show (oh you read that right folks Sir Mix-A-Lot)"The Watcher." Voyager was decent for a couple of seasons, Platypus Man was not bad I think (Homer Simpson liked it!) But when they cancelled Nowhere Man, otherwise known as "the greatest show UPN ever had," I threw in the towel. Add in Homeboys in Outer Space and Desomnd Pfeiffier and UPN should not only be canned, it should be condemned!

  • June 30, 2006, 2:42 a.m. CST

I can't believe I'm responding to "Hairy Nutsack"...

    by AshFett

But still, I gotta say: Look, the WB cancelling Angel sucked big time, but considering it never got the ratings of Smallville or 7th Heaven, neither of which was able to keep The WB going, I hardly think our favorite brooding vampire could have changed things.

  • June 30, 2006, 3:15 a.m. CST

The teacher storyline on Life As We Know It...

    by Shermdawg

Is what got me hooked. (I never watched Dawsons Creek, the WB wasn't a reliable network in my area, after WGN dropped it, we didn't get it for years afterwards.) But from the few moments I caught of it on TBS, the kids on LAWKI were much more realistic than the Dawson brats.

  • June 30, 2006, 3:34 a.m. CST

    Buffy pilot? Or Buffy premiere?

    by hulk_beanpoll

Cuz the pilot was that twenty minute thing, with someone else playing Willow. It's never been included on a dvd so I'm assuming they can't clear the material to air it. I'm also assuming that when they say "Buffy pilot" here, they mean the debut episode.

  • June 30, 2006, 7:35 a.m. CST

Obviously its the 1st ep, as originaly shown by WB

    by pokadoo

If your going to get pedantic about the term "pilot", why not show the horrible, cheesy five minute Angel pilot? Neither of these were meant to be shown on network TV. You can find them both on youtube, though.

"...why not show the horrible, cheesy five minute Angel pilot?" Or better yet, just not call them pilots in the first place, since they're not. It may be a term most people are familiar with but that doesn't make it an accurate one.

Then when the frog has been exploded, we can take the remnants and wipe them all over the front office door of PETA. I hated the WB and I hate PETA, so wouldn't that be like mixing peanut butter and chocolate? Yes. Yes it would.

OK... So; avoid WB on Sept 17. Thanks for the warning.

    by ZeroCorpse

I will not miss this half-assed, crappy network. There was never ONE show I would have bothered to watch. It was all aimed at people who are younger, dumber, and more girly than me. My only regret is that they didn't kill the network before Buffy got going, so we could be spared the extraordinarily annoying Whedonites all over the Internet. Good riddance, WB. I knew you'd suck, and I knew you'd be gone in a short while.

  • June 30, 2006, 1:02 p.m. CST

    re: quadrupletree

    by themikejonas

In most instances, one will be a CW station, and the other will revert to a local station. Many of the latter (particularly former UPN stations owned by Fox, like KCOP in Los Angeles) will become "My Network TV" affiliates, the new quasi-network from News Corp that will carry American attempts at a "telenovela" format (i.e. a first-run sudsy dramatic series that runs five days a week for a limited duration).

Buffy is my favorite show of all time, but I really thought the first season was definitely the worst... Angel was pretty good during all of its seasons, but Roswell really did have the greatest first season out of all the shows theyre repeating on Sunday... I don't think it had any "bad" season, it was pretty consistent... Thank god for the dvds...

Way to go, cycling; your sport has more dopers per square foot than pro wrestling or baseball. by Rinse

It was the great blend of sci-fi and teen drama for the first half season. After that it was retooled and became a teen drama first, thereby destroying what made it unique in WB's line up in the first place. After two seasons I couldn't be bothered to watch it anymore.

    No one mentioned 7 Days

    by snowpuff

That was not such a bad show. Except, technically speaking, no one on the show except Parker should have any memory whatsoever of him ever successfully going back in time. Read: There is problem. Parker is sent back. He fixes the problem. They only know he's appeared from the future - but he's the only one who will remember successfully using the time sphere thing. Plus, they never really explain where the present day Parker goes when he appears from the future (in the past). I'm sure somewhere with deeper knowledge of the show will nitpick a bit - but there are some paradoxes they let slide because it's a fun show, not true sci-fi. Plus, the episode with Robert Picardo as the devil battling Parker was up there with Mr. Rourke battling Satan on Fantasy Island.

How wrond you are my friend. If you think Roswell peaked in the first half of the first season you are diluted. White Room, Destiny and Departure are easily the three best episodes, from the end of the first and second seasons. The third season, I will admit, did bring the series down as a whole, preventing it from being an all time Great But Cancelled classic. But that was for 2 reasons: Katherine Heigls hair, and that CSI Miami trainwreck Jesse piece of shit that sucked up every scene he was in. Overall though still one of my fav shows ever, much better than most of the stuff on tv today and 99% of the stuff WB has ever put out. Minus Buffy.
