Columbo: The Complete Fifth Season will almost certainly be the last single-season set issued for this esteemed series of mystery movies. The sixth season only contained three episodes, so I’m guessing it’ll be combined for DVD with the detective's five-episode seventh and final season on NBC.
Season five saw the be-raincoated sleuth match wits with an aging Broadway star, a third-world ambassador, a Mexican ranch owner, a Nazi magician and a callow shipbuilder. "Prisoner" fans will be excited to learn two of the six episodes on this set were directed by the great Patrick McGoohan, one of which also starred McGoohan as a spy! Other memorable fifth-season guest-stars included Janet Leigh, Ricardo Montalban, Leslie Nielsen, Hector Elizondo, Sal Mineo, Maurice “Zaius” Evans, a 37-year-old Diane Baker, “Breakfast Club” icon Paul Gleason, and future Adam Sandler employee Dennis Dugan.
Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” series is a hit-and-miss enterprise to be certain, and for my money the highest high of its first season had to be Lucky McKee’s “Sick Girl,” which is the scary, funny, sexy and very strange tale of super-insects and lesbian love. It stars my favorite porn actress, the adorable Erin “Misty Munday” Brown, and Angela Bettis, who was similarly wonderful and lesbianic in McKee’s sterling big-screen effort (and all-time Butt-Numb-A-Thon highlight) “May.”
