Capone falls deeply in love with SUPERMAN RETURNS having seen it twice already!

Published at:  Jun 26, 2006 4:22:23 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... I've seen the film twice, plus this morning I saw a bunch of the IMAX 3D footage that was fucking unbelievably awesome. The shot of the glasses on the floor of the barn - where we see through them at the floaty Clark... amazing. Flat out jaw-dropping 3D shot. The plane stuff was the stuff of wet fanboy and fangirl dreams. Just Amazing. When you see this - you will pang to see this process done to something like THE WIZARD OF OZ. Just holy fuck cool. Anyway - seems Capone loves the movie even more than I do... which is kinda amazing. Here ya go...

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here. When I interviewed Bryan Singer back
in October 2004 ( http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=18610), it was
less than a week before Christopher Reeve's death. It was several weeks
before he named the actor playing this latest incarnation of Superman. In
fact, Singer wasn't even sitting across from me to talk about any
superheroes; he was on a promotional tour to talk about his
soon-to-be-launched T.V. series "House." But in looking back at his comments
the during the pre-production phase of Superman Returns, it astonishes me
(even though it probably should not) how faithful and clear his vision was
even that long ago. But not even Singer's detailed descriptions and
enthusiasm for the project prepared me for seeing the final product.

The most difficult part of this review will be not getting lost in all the
history of this franchise or the long road taken to get Superman Returns
made. No, the hardest part about writing this one will be not getting lost
in how much the 1978 Superman changed my life. The Richard Donner-directed
masterpiece may have been the first film I ever completely obsessed over. I
knew/know all the dialog, found all the plot holes through repeated
viewings, marveled at the then-state-of-the-art special effects, and
desperately tried to understand why Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman got top
billing over the unknown actor played the Man of Steel (I was young, what
did I know about billing?). Time and study has revealed all to me over the
years, and upon rewatching the first two Superman movies again recently
(since this new version has been said to pick up five years after the second
film), I now appreciate how epic and wonderful the first film is and how
underwhelming Superman II is to me now, despite my childhood memory of it
being the best of them all.

Upon writing this review, I've already seen Superman Returns twice and will
be seeing it two more time before its release (the final time being the
partially-3D IMAX version). The first time watching director Bryan Singer's
utterly faithful rendering of the Superman character (perfectly inhabited by
newcomer Brandon Routh) and legend, I was deeply entranced and touched
watching Singer recreate (but not re-imagine, thank god) the universe these
characters inhabit: Metropolis (no longer a stand-in for New York City, but
close), the Arctic-located Fortress of Solitude, and the Kent family farm in
Smallville, Kansas. I also loved searched and usually finding the little
things that Singer has carried over from Donner's work: Lois Lane (Kate
Bosworth) is still a terrible speller and smokes on occasion; Clark Kent
still can't negotiate a revolving door and still loves the word “swell.”
This is the Superman I grew up loving. Rather than change everything, Singer
adds to it in ways that I couldn't help but be in awe of the first time
through.

The second viewing, I was determined to actually judge the movie as a movie,
as an entertainment machine for people not as familiar or enthused about
Superman. I found myself even more drawn in by Singer's take on these
familiar characters and themes. Superman has been missing from the world for
five years after astronomers believed they have found remnants of his
homeworld Krypton. Using the spacecraft he was sent to earth in as an infant
(which is apparently reusable), Superman leaves his adoptive earth to found
out something about who he is. Singer never misses an opportunity to cast
Superman as the outsider, the man alone; earthlings love him, but that
doesn’t make him one of them. Although he doesn't approach the darkness of,
say, the Batman, Superman is far more brooding, contemplative, and desperate
for love than we've seen him before on film. There's almost an indication
that he performs his heroic deeds because the adoration of the people fuels
him. He can't help but smile at the TV reports of his crime- and
disaster-stopping ways.

Assuming that the film takes place in the present day, Superman being gone
from the earth for five years also implies (although it's never specifically
said) that he wasn't here to stop the events of 9-11 from happening or the
war that followed. (A similar device was used in the last James Bond movie.)
Upon his return to earth, he spends some time with his mother Martha (Eva
Marie Saint) on the farm, remembering more innocent peaceful times as a
young boy when he was just discovering his powers. These are moments we
never saw in the first Superman (the Clark Kent we see here in flashbacks is
younger than the high schooler in Donner's film), and they are simply
beautiful.

But the stuff most people care about begins with Clark's return to
Metropolis and to his old job at the Daily Planet. It doesn't take long for
him to see how much things have changed. Lois has a young son and a fiancé
(X-Men's James Marsden), Richard White, nephew of Planet editor Perry White
(Frank Langella). And on his first day back in town, Superman already has a
catastrophic event to deal with: the crash landing of a plane full of
reporters, including Lois. Holy living crap, I can't wait to see this
sequence in 3D. With the full power of CGI and infinitely better blue screen
technology, Singer cuts loose on showing us just how agile and powerful
Superman truly is. His strength, speed, and heat vision are all on full
display in this sequence, and it will melt your mind how cool it is.

The flip side of this equation is the story of Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) and
his gang of henchmen. Spacey's Luthor is still playful like Gene Hackman,
but he's far more menacing and dangerous, less of a jester. In other words,
he's as evil as they come, and his King-of-the-World plan to essentially
grow a continent in the Atlantic Ocean using crystals stolen from Superman's
Fortress of Solitude is as ingenious as it is impractical. (If you drown
billions of people by growing a new land mass, who would be left to actually
purchase your real estate? And Al Gore thinks global warming is a problem!)
And I found it fascinating that Luthor once again (as he did in the first
two films) devices an evil scheme that involves creating valuable real
estate where once there was none. Blessedly, Luthor's supporting cast is not
all about broad humor and dumb jokes, although the casting of Parker Posey
as his assistant Kitty Kowalski comes close sometimes. I did find it strange
that Luthor's technical wizard is played by Kal Penn (Kumar of Harold and
Kumar fame); not only is he not called upon to be funny, he also isn't given
a single line in the film.

In one of the film's most talked about and fascinating scenes, Luthor and
his crew must travel to the Fortress of Solitude to gather the crystals. Lex
stands before the control panel where the younger Clark stood years earlier
to learn all about who is really is. The face of Superman's real father
Jor-El (a resurrected, god-like Marlon Brando) appears to provide whoever is
watching with information on any subject. Luthor utters the spine-chilling
line “Tell me everything, starting with the crystals.”

If you thought it was tedious that we don't even see Superman in costume
until about an hour into the first Superman, don't be too freaked out that
Superman and Luthor don't actually come face to face until the top of hour
two in Superman Returns. But when they meet, their battle is sensational and
brutal. And I enjoyed the way Singer incorporates most of his major
characters into the final scenes. Richard's skills as a pilot come in handy;
Lois never forgets that she's a journalist and uses her investigative skills
to track down Luthor (albeit inadvertently); and her son...well, he helps
out to. No one is left just standing around waiting to be a hapless victim
waiting to get saved or taken down.

Today's world is a place in which nearly every news event is captured on
amateur video tape or on someone's camera phone, and this fact isn't lost in
this film. This is also a world desperate for someone to fly in and save it,
and while that will never happen in the real world, it's nice to know there
are places where a savior to all humankind exists. On more than one
occasion, Singer shows us Superman hovering over the earth, listening to
every single sound coming from it just so he can single out those voices in
need of help. Superman floats in space, arms slightly extended, brow
furrowed, cape billowing around him like a red aura. Never on film has he
seemed more Christ-like (the tortured only son of a white-haired disembodied
figure who apparently has infinite knowledge? Come on), and it suits him. On
the flip side, Superman has never seemed more human. He relentlessly comes
on to Lois, stalks her a little, and practically begs her to leave Richard
and be with him. But a part of us (and him and her) knows this can probably
never be, and you actually feel kind of sorry for the man who can do
everything but not have what he truly wants.

As good as all of the actors are here, let's face it: the film lives or dies
on Routh's performance. Some will say that he's the embodiment of
Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman, but this isn't entirely true. He
does resemble him, I'll give you that, and there are times while he's
playing Clark Kent that it scared me how much he acting and sounded like the
late actor. But when he reveals the blue costume and red accessories, he's
his own man. This is not the same Superman of your youth, and I'm not
completely sure I can explain why. He's more mature. The trip to find the
remains of Krypton has changed him, hardened him significantly. He's still a
genuinely good and kind person, but he gets lost in his own mind and
shadowed thoughts more often, and Routh adds a subtle and necessary weight
to the proceedings.

Superman Returns is the finest and most well-rounded film about superheroes
ever made. This is a film that doesn't skimp on the action, but also bothers
to take the time to develop and grow its characters. To those who say the
film is flawed or that they were disappointed, I say that you need to remind
yourself what made the original Superman so important. It wasn't just the
behavior and actions of the super-powered beings, it was the way the rest of
the world incorporated them into the culture. When Singer directed the first
two X-Men movies, he put a great deal of emphasis on how the world's mutants
are feared and hated by most. Here, Superman is revered and loved, something
the lonely Clark Kent desperately needs, but he's still very much alone in
the world. Superman Returns isn't simply good, it's damn near perfect, and
it gets better with repeated viewings.

    by drtobiasfunke

Seems to me that SR's main problem with overtaking X3's initial take is the fact that it's an hour longer. Longer movie = fewer people that will be able to see it. My expectations for this movie aren't all that high despite the rave reviews. Pirates of the Caribbean will wipe this one off the map upon release.

Superman's cape billows in the wind and he can hear things in space? I understand that there is sound in space in movies like Star Wars but that's for the audience's benefit, like the soundtrack or subtitles but the actual characters don't hear it. There are levels of suspension of disbelief. We are asked to beleive there are such things as lightsabers but we never see Luke jump out of a moving X-Wing onto a TIE fighter or hear a Star Destroyer coming at him like a submarine. We're asked to believe a man can fly but not that there are gusts of wind in space. Anyway, science geek mode off, looking foward to the film.

These gushing reviews don't mesh well with the REMAKE motif (with better effects), horrible casting, wooden and over-the-top-acting, that I see in all the trailers, TV spots and clips. by jimmy jazz

For the life of me, I CANNOT see the appeal of the original Superman movies. What is the point of this retread? This was a real opportunity to faithfully portray the comic book character as he has been for the past twenty years or so. A competent, fully realized Clark Kent, a dangerous Lex Luthor powerful, a truly interesting, limited Superman that you can give a rat's ass about. Instead it is the same old, same old. Jerry Lewis as Clark Kent. Lex Luthor as a low level con artist with silly sidekicks. A godlike Superman that can make everything all better with his finger rays and his ability to travel through time. What bullshit. Of course, this boring crap will make a mint and the Post-Crisis John Byrne "Man Of Steel" movie will have to wait another twenty years to be realized. WHat a lost opportunity.

    by wolack22

just a few examples why they sucked... the boring intro to number one, superman taking off his S and throwing it at the bad guy, never really explaining why superman got his powers back in II with any logical reason after his mom said he could never have them back after finding true love, the stupidity of the machine that takes away his powers and how he changes it to take away the others powers, luthors comedic tone, otis, chris reeve's lame melodramatic acting whenever he got near cryptonite; especially when he was drowning in the pool, all the stupid one liners, how margot kidder gets really annoying at times as lois, time travel by reversing the rotation of the earth, luthors ridiculous role in supes II... the list goes on people... STOP WORSHIPPING THE DONNER FILMS! im just going for SPIDERMAN 3 TRAILER

    by undead neverhood

And Superman 3 and 4 were hideously bad. Was watching the first two again, and way back then at the time they were good, but those first two really dont stand the test of time very well. Superman had zero peronality and was too goodee goodee. The effects suck and look very cheap. The story for the first two was ok but I really could have done without Superman flying around the planet superfast and causing it to spin backwards and all events on planet Earth start happening in reverse. Yes, that was very stupid. This new Superman looks very good from what I am seeing. Im looking forward to it.

I'm excited about the new Superman..I started reading the comics during Identity Crisis but my only gripe is that they should have followed the steps of Batman Begins and redo the series.
The original Superman movies are horrible and I'm sorry but Christopher Reeves sucked..he was a crappy actor..if he was that good then you would have seen more of him in other movies. If he hadn't had the accident and died then nobody would give a damn. I'm sick of people thinking he was the best..hell the guy in Smallville would play a better Superman

Nicely said and very passionate. It's 14 hours until I see this film and I hope I'm as enthralled as you. I just hope it's half as good as you say so all these emo fan-boy pricks can get over their Dark-Knights and Spidey's and bow down the greatest Superhero of all time. God I hope it beats Spider-man's B.O.

    Reeves Respect

    by cadillac jones

Y'know - FUCK YOU! Reeve's may not have been a stellar actor, but goddamn if it wasn't one of the best (if not *THE* best) Superman ever! Why? Because he was genuine! He gave those movies a sweetness & overall "good" feeling. Sure his Clark Kent was goofy; that was all part of the act - of the identity disguise. And no, my friend, the world didn't think he was the best, they KNEW he was the best as he was an amiable, friendly all-around decent human being in real life. Unlike your sad-ass self.

    Partial 3D

    by jumpinjehosaphat

Does anyone know what percentage of the film actually takes advantage of the 3D at the IMAX showings? It'll suck a little if there are only four scenes with 3D and I'm stuck wearing those damn uncomfortable goggles the entire length of the film. Not a huge whine, mind you -- just saying it would suck a bit.

    Take it outside, Singer...

    by captain happy

This movie sucks & obviously, Capone you got something in return for your review. Did you get a Brandon Routh figurine?
Bryan Singer is one of the worst (& certainly one of the most overhyped) directors out there. Xmen 2 was barely passable (& I was a fan of the books from when I was a little kid) - & Xmen 1 was plainly an unflushable turd. 3 I won't even bring myself to see. I'm a fan of Nolan's Batman, Burton's Batman - those are classic comic book films, heck, I liked the Punisher, but "Superman Returns is the finest and most well-rounded film about superheroes ever made?", c'mon, who let you write on this site, anyway?? Singer is just too pretentious & ponderous for words, take it outside, Singer - get out of my comic books! & Capone, man...your interview offended me.

because of the accident, and the tragic story that a man who was superman became injured... sorry to say it, but it's true. If he had not had his accident no one would care, and Singer certainly wouldn't be haling and homaging Donner's superman movies as masterpieces.

    by the dum guy

Obviously this movie will tank simply because it is tooo long. Look at what happened to that indie film that came out a couple years ago called "Return of the King" (the title didn't make any sense, cause I don't remember any movie called "King" that came out before it), that filmed was loved by a few critics, but quickly fell by the wayside. Another thing is this Routh guy, I mean have you ever seen him do any good acting, cause I haven't. All in all I have to agree that this film is doomed from the start, especially because of its runaway budget, which automatically makes people hate it, just look at what happened with "Titanic", MAJOR BOMB!

DON'T LET THIS REVIEW GET YOU OVERHYPED... I loved it just about as much as capone, but if you go in with xtreme expectations you might not enjoy it as much... He is correct with his descriptions, but you are meant to feel that as you watch and not think about it for days and days before you see it. Much of the huge action in the movie has been shown in trailers, etc... but much of the suprise lies in the heart of the film... like lotr.

    by jinryu7

Though working in my department of WB, (security,) does have it's major downdays.... Every once in a while it has it's perks. Seeing Supes soar again is just that example. Caponne is not messing with your fragile little kryptonian brains here. No, he is 100% spot on. This is the first movie that I adored in my childhood to truely take my breath away. Star Wars ressurected never quite capyured that after the original homage opening, and theme. Sure the feeling is quite nostalgic here too, but it doesn't get those hairs on your neck standing for no reason. EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has ever loved Superman, the superman movies, and Smallville etc.. MUST SEE THIS. You may not be 100% happy with it as you have grown to love it. But you most certainly will not be 100% against it. In fact the average from my core circle of geekdom pals is at least a 90/100 percentage of love for this great re-introduction to someone, as a supes fann, I almost feel is lost. Not only by the public, but by my friends who always tell me, "Fuk Supes, he is gay, Batman is king, or Wolvie rocks!" etc.. But nothing represents my human iimagination and awe more than Supes, and finally seeing more of what he could really do in the comics and cartoons = H E A V E N. I am not saying best movie ever, I am saying best comic movie this year and maybe a lot longer back...

If anyone else says 'REEVES' or even 'REEVE'S' (as seen above) I swear I'm gonna bring down the entire Internet (I could you know, with just six words, oh yes, six). It's REEVE! From what I'm seeing, Routh does a Reeve impression for the most part, but because they've tweaked the character it works really well. Will Singer ever do 'The Death Of Superman' story? I hope so, in the third movie perhaps. Bring back Zod (Jude Law has been suggested for this role, but if he ends up being in the Batman sequel it won't happen). Oh, and it's REEVE! REEVE!!!!

I was quite cynical about this project for the longest time, thinking it was gonna be one of those lameass "reboot" scenarios but I'm soooooooooo glad to hear Singer has decided to stick with the existing material. This is a BAAAAAAD trend this whole reimagining business and I can't wait until it becomes unfashionable... All the gushing I keep hearing about Batman Begins - ok it may well be better than most, even ALL the other Batman films - BUT IT STILL SUCKED! BORING PREDICTABLE RUBBISH! Maybe the Donner films haven't aged well? Maybe it's a generation thing? Superman TMP was the first movie I remember seeing at the movies, as a child. Apparently I saw Star Wars at the movies too but I don't remember a damn thing about it. Anyhow I, for one (probably TRULY just ONE) liked the the first THREE films and only really thought the 4th one sucked. OK it sucked BIGTIME but I still liked III - especially Richard Pryor as a computer geek! I always thought Superman V was gonna be about Zod making a comeback but I guess Jude Law was busy - how about TERENCE STAMP??? btw ape man, it's Christopher REEVE, who played Supes AFTER George REEVES did on TV in black and white - so get over yourself...

See, I like Superman BECAUSE he's normal, well-adjusted; not melancholy, manipulative, selfish. Reading Walter Chaw's review over at FilmFreak, he of course likes it for all of these reasons - because he's cynical and wants to turn it into some post-modern reflection on the loss of innocence. And it very well may be good at that, BUT THAT IS NOT SUPERMAN. It makes me so sad that this is what the character is reduced to.

What's with all the hate for King Kong - what more do you want from a movie, King Kong showed more ambition and class in the title sequence alone than a million Moron Michael Bay/ShitMcG /Arse Ratner wankfests - yet every time a positive review for a potentially exciting or interesting film is posted on this site said review is shot down in flames and referenced against King Kong, has nobody on this site seen some of the shit that is being endlessly churned out by Hollywood? King Kong showed more ambition and class in the title sequence than a million Moron Michael Bay/ShitMcG/Arse Ratner Wankfests

I for one am eagerly waiting to see Superman returns and as we have to wait longer in the UK I am grateful that it is invoking excitement...

I know Harry struggles keep his trousers under control over certain films, and finds it particularly hard to be objective when his "friends" are involved with the production but for me I find his enthusiasm for certain projects far more entertaining than the cynicism usually found on these talkbacks

    by brycemonkey

It's not cynicism in the TBs. You need to readjust your value system. The reason for the hate is that Kong is simply not a very good film. Don't get me wrong, I agree with your comments on Kong, but they don't save it from only being a 6/10 film. You forgot to add that it is too long, the casting is not good, the performances (other than lead female and Kong) are not good, the script is leaden etc. Ass to this that the Public were expecting Great Things from Jackson, not Fair to Middle thing s. If you love Kong then thats great, but don't blinker yourself as to why others don't agree with you. As to SR there has been overwhelming support from day one on this site, so I'd like to see a more balanced view. However, by all accounts it seems to be a really good film. Peace.

And the more I hear about this "Gee willikers, I was off visiting the space-dust that was once my homeworld (!?!?) and now I'm back - and whaddayaknow - my good buddy CLark pops up, too" business, I am losing my excitement for this thing. I'll go see it, but I am more pumped about PotC - and Spiderman 3!

    brycemonkey: ref Kong

    by rob33

I guess that perfectly illustrates the problem with reviewing films - personal taste one man's "King Kong" is another man's "Charlies Angels-Full throttle"

I concede that maybe the casting was a bit out, and perhaps the film was a little long to be seen in one sitting, but I went into that movie not particularly excited, and not a big fan of the original, yet I came out thinking who on earth could have made a better film?

I accept that so far the SR coverage on AICN has been overly positive, but perhaps you need to think back to the time before AICN, film reviews were so staid and boring - particularly in the UK where we had Barry Norman a man so dry he could make Brittany Spears consider celibacy, how I longed then for someone to get enthusiastic and excited about a film that I too was excited about

Maybe I do need to adjust my value system and be more objective but at age 38 with two kids and a mortgage if a film can successfully transport me away for a couple of hours - whether it's to Middle Earth, New York City, SKULL Island or Metropolis then I consider the Directors job well done

    True rob33...

    by brycemonkey

I find it hard to disagree with anything you say. It is however a catch-22 in that: If a review tries to be objective it is very dry, robotic and passionless. If a review is subjective you can't trust it as their judgement is clouded and influenced by passion. I thought most things in Kong were well done but it was a step back for me in terms of what I was hoping it would be (and I wasn't overhyped going in to see it). I'll agree that I'm not a hater as I rate it 6/10 but there are others who reacted more harshly (unfairly?) to it. Good discussion though. And Ebert *hated* SR which is unusual as he's been loving *everything* recently... could be trouble brewing...

    Ebert vs. Harry vs. Moriarty

    by ringwearer9

Ebert doesn't like anything dark. He's old, about to shuffle off his mortal coil, and wants to be cheered up by his movies ... and he was right about Van Helsing, as was Harry. It was a cheerful movie. I disagree with him about X-Men 1, because I've got a bigger tolerance for movie angst than he has, but Singer formula-ized the angst angle for X-Men 2, and I don't want to see it layerered on with a shovel in Superman. Superman isn't supposed to be broody and angsty. Ebert's review sounds spot on, and I, for one, won't go to see it. Oh, and to those of you waiting for Moriarty's "objective" review, he won't review the actual movie. He never does. He just reviews all other reviewers and then he gives himself pats on the back for having some insight about the movie that no-one else has, without really getting around to focusing on whether the movie is any good. And has anyone caught on to the fact that the "controversy" of conflicting reviews on this site is just smoke cover for lackluster movies? It confuses the readers and makes them feel "I guess we have to see it for ourselves", something Moriarty seems to like to sneeringly suggest is the only option for truly intelligent people. In other words, spending your money on the movie is your duty as a reader of this site, and the reviewers will do their best to not discourage you from doing so.

Thar be Spoilers Ahead, Says I

    by kingkirby

I just saw the film last night here in Phoenix. Overall, I really liked it and I loved the return of Superman to the big screen. I too was raised on Donner's Superman and loved how Singer took the filmic world of the Man of Steel that I knew and added to it. However, there were a few things I didn't care as much for: 1.) It was a bit too long, actually. It needed to be a bit tighter, especially in the multiple ending department; 2.) I LOVE the John Williams theme, but Ottman seemed to throw it in there every time Big Blue did ANYthing; 3.) Spacey was a bit all over the place for me. It's like he wasn't sure if he should be the rascally Hackman Luthor or a completely evil son of a bitch who would stab a weakened Superman in the back with a Kryptonite dagger. Having said that, I roared with laughter when Lois runs into Luthor for the first time in the film; 4.) The Kid. In the first place, give the kid a haircut, for crying out loud. Second, he uses a piano to crush a guy to death. But when Mommy Lois asks Baby Hairdo to help open the door, the next time we see them he's sitting on the floor having obviously not done anything to help; 5.) I really wanted more slow comeuppance for the thugs who kick the living shit out of Superman, but what happens? They're squashed by a falling rock, which I guess you could say is Superman's doing; 6.) When Lois and Supes get it on in "Superman II", it is with a human Clark who has given up his powers to be with Lois, which means if this IS a sequel to "Superman II" then the Kid should have NO powers as it wasn't Super Semen that made him, it was regular old human baby batter; and finally 7.) If this IS a sequel to "Superman II", that film ends with Superman telling The President of the United States, no less, that "Sorry I've been away so long. I won't let you down again." And apparently right after that he THEN takes off for five years? But hey, other than those few things, I really did like this movie.

    by ringwearer9

.... assuming you aren't just Moriarty hyping himself (I wouldn't be surprised), just remember that he gushed all over King Kong. And Harry's review of King Kong came off pretty disappointed. I don't trust Harry, but Moriarty doesn't have a good track record either. But every talkback there's someone posting here about how they only trust Moriarty, that he's the only objective reviewer here.

This is one line from his Superman Returns review, "It would have been fun to give Superman a bright, sassy child, like one of the Spy Kids, and make him a part of the plot." WHAT?! And yeah, he also said that Spider-Man 2 could be a darkhorse pick for Best Picture. What?! He actually said that on his show! I haven't seen the movie yet, but after reading his review, I was just dumbstruck. He even asked why Superman strains while trying to lift an airplane etc. Well, he needs to know that Superman does have super strength, but does have limits. This was told in the comic book world when Superman was reimagine in the 70s. He went from being able to do ANYTHING, to being limited in his power. I don't HATE Ebert, I just can't trust him anymore.

Ebert gave Batman Begins 4 stars cause

    by moondoggy2u

he knows how the character of Batman is supposed to be depicted: dark, troubled, in command, and as a detective. Ebert gave Superman Returns 2 stars because he knows how superman is supposed to be depicted: witty, charming, innocent, strong, decisive, and standing for truth, justice, and the american way. In other words, Ebert knows that Superman should have a bit of corniness, because he IS a bit much, but we love him anyway. This new superman movie apparently has Superman confused with Batman, and also casts actors who appear to be 10 years too young for the role.

Don't be so sure. Nobody doubts that this will make a LOT of money. But it cost 260 million (funny how Kong was raked over the coals for costing $206M while this gets a free pass?). We're looking at a movie that needs to approach $300 million (and be the biggest of the year so far by far) just to *break even*. It's possible, but I wouldn't call it a sure thing just yet.

    by mr nice gaius

However, the movie will most likely more than "break even" with its global gross. And I have a feeling this flick is going to come out strong and live or die based on the opening weekend word-of-mouth. That's what kept "Batman Begins" in the game - it opened modestly but the word-of-mouth spread and kept people coming into the theaters for quite awhile. - You mentioned "King Kong", it's interesting because I don't think the budget for "SR" has been hyped as much as Kong's was before release. Then again, Singer probably didn't have to dump $32 million of his own cash into this thing like PJ did with Kong.

Yeah, but *Batman Begins* deserved the good word of mouth it received. This rehash does not merit that. Plus, you have to add $100 million for the movie's marketing campaign above the film's alleged $200 million - $300 million budget. It will not do $400 million domestic in no way, shape or form. Now, I'm sure this is hard for you to understand, but kids like to buy more than one toy. Sure, they love superman, but they'd also love to play with a matching figure as a bad guy/team mate toy. I know this sounds like a stupid reason to you, but im just telling you what ive heard from my kids about this. I know, I know, im being picky--I want my superman to be able to shave and not define acting as giving me the "blue-steel." I guess I'm just that kinda guy.

and dont get me started on what kind of superman I want

    by moondoggy2u

Cause if it were my way, Superman would be over 40. No, not a Ross-age superman (though that would be pretty neat), but certainly someone old enough to have some character in his face. Remember, this kid is not only supposed to be old enough to be called superman (which is REEEAALLLY stretching it), but also is supposed to have a few years experience as a superhero and having a 5 year hiatus. By all acounts, he should be about 40 in this movie, not some little punk.

    Now wait one second...

    by harysuxafat1

you guys are saying the fucking Krypton scenes were completely cut from the film? So he just shows the fuck up out of nowhere in the movie? So they cut scenes from the damn movie so they could artificially inflate DVD sales by giving the people a little less shitty of a movie that they have to pay 25 bucks to see? What a bunch of fucktards. SINO is shaping up to be a bucket of monkey spunk. What an abortion. I hope this fucker ends Singers shitastic love fest.

    by seedyal

Have any of you naysayers even seen the movie? Jesus Christ! I'm going to see it first, and not decide if I hate it ahead of time. Fucking morons. No wonder you can't get any girlfriends.

    Yes, hary, krypton is cut

    by moondoggy2u

Thats why im awfully suspicious of Harry and Co's reviews. Both kinda/sorta intimate that Krypton was easy on the eyes. The only thing I dont understand is that they couldnt possibly have seen the scene since it was cut weeks ago from the movie (unless, that is, their reviews were already pre-typed press release crap).

    The 2

    by darth maui

I heard Christopher Reeve is on the other side posthumously changing his name to Reeves so that nobody will ever misspell it again.

Harry and Herc are MAJOR assholes...

    by jar jar 4 prez

for that animation that they're using of Superman in the wheelchair. Yeah, I can hear your responses already: "Oh, but that's Herc's little avatar! We mean no disrespect!" Yeah, right... and I'm sure that as you were creating the animation and posting it on the site nobody made the connection that Christopher Reeve was confined to a wheelchair for the last few years of his life. You're gonna have to delete this post, because I'm totally calling you assholes out bigtime. There's no excuse for this type of shit.

    Minderbinder, unfortunately, I did.

    by ringwearer9

Even more unfortunately, I'll probably rent King Kong extended when it comes to the dollar rental, and listen to the director's commentary. And I can then trot out my insights for the "Lovely Bones" talkbacks. Keep your calendar clear!

    Battle there was No Battle!!

    by jeffnyc

I can't beleive Capone said "Superman and Luthor don't actually come face to face until the top of hour two in Superman Returns. But when they meet, their battle is sensational and brutal."

Battle there was no battle, Superman shows up, then gets beat up and that's it. He didn't lay a finger on anyone. I would have preferred if he and Lex at least matched wits for a few minutes.

Matched wits? How could that happen in this film? You'd have to have the Byrne/post-Byrne/Paul Dini animated/Lois&Clark/Smallville interpretation of Lex's character to actually have him have a set of wits to clash with! Not a warmed-over-Hackman-Luthor take hellbent on "penetrating" Superman with his kryptonite shiv! Super indeed!

So ringbearer, how do you expect 2 have any credibility

    by minderbinder

It's hard to believe that you hated it so much if you own it and keep watching it. Way to stick it to the man...I'm sure he'd love a ton more "haters" who whine and whine...and hand him sacks of money.

    by mr nice gaius

For the record, Ring lost all credibilty when he lampooned Jackson's decision to use the actual COLOR OF FIRE for the CGI fire shown in "King Kong". Others could probably tell you that he lost it long before that...

Minderbinder, where did I say I OWNED Kong?

    by ringwearer9

I would never own that piece of crap. And I don't think Jackson's going to get much cash from his percentage of my dollar rental whenever I get around to it. If I do. Oh, and Nice Gaius, I never said the "color of fire" was wrong, just that the fire looked fake. Are you my new Doc Pazuzu now?

    Good to hear that, ringy.

    by minderbinder

When you said "id did" I thought you meant you bought the DVD. Were you the guy who kept whining endlessly about Kong before it came out? Obsessively going frame by frame through the trailers and even interviews with Jackson and nitpicking them? I thought that asshole got banned and all his posts deleted?

Ring - Your new Doc Paz?

    by mr nice gaius

Never could I claim to be anyone's Doc Paz. You guys have your own special relationship. As for the fire, you said it was fake because the color was too boring...too fire-like. You said the same about the horizon shots in the film, too. You didn't like the use of the colors orange or blue.
