So all the positive press Supes has been getting, coupled with a taste for superhero flicks (look at X3's box office) and a pre existing market (older supes fans, new supes fans and comic book geeks in general hardly signals a bad fate for this. As for Bryan Singer's career, well he's on board for a sequal, forayed into TV and is working on other projects...oh yeah really circling the crapper!

With you on the Green Goblin armour. I didn't like that, but Doc Ock worked and looked better than a tentacled teltubby with a bowlcut as he always seemed. And having organic web spinners was a better idea than the inventions, and the changes made to give spidey's suit a bit more substance worked to give it more than a spandex look.

    by Blanket-Man

I had no interest in seeing STUPORMAN, yet now I MUST! I MUST!!!! ALL HAIL THE GOD THAT IS SAM RAIMI!!!! And, Jarv, David Michelinie wrote those classic early Venom tales. I remember those comics so well: for the first time, I actually feared for Spidey's safety. Venom/Brock remains the only truly awesome Spidey villain who wasn't created by Lee/Ditko. Too bad Marvel overexposed Brock, watered him down and eventually ruined him throughout the 1990s...

    by Frijole

Yes, the GG costume was unfortunate... but I think in the end that ANY GG costume was going to look pretty silly in live action. As for Octavius, he wasn't a "good guy"- he was a good man and a good scientist turned mad by his errr... accident. Exactly like in the comics. The only change was that SM2 killed him in the end (common practice in comic adaptations) and since he started as a good man, Raimi allowed him redemption before his death. As for Raimi having never read a comic... come ON! With the exception of Kevin Smith and David Goyer, he is probably the most comics savvy person in Hollywood. With the exception of two movies, the man's entire CAREER has been a comic book. ED/AofD has been adapted into several comics, Spider-Man is an adaptation OF a comic and The Quick and the Dead and Darkman have more comic book tone/devices/framings etc... than any 3 or 4 average comic adaptations COMBINED. Nitpick all you want, but Raimi's affection for the character is not in question.

I just checked it out and the only trailers on there are fakes. I always thought the Sandman was a boring character and nothing more than Hydroman with sand in place of water. I think this flick will have more depth in the characters which I think the other 2 were missing. I'm hoping the symbiote causes Peter to backhand MJ a time or 2 to shut her up...that would be worth the price of admission!

    Marketing Suggestion

    by Mad-Maximus

I saw on the teaser description that the release is the 4th of May. That lands on a Friday. I'm in the marketing industry and I'm wondering why they didn't make the release the 3rd of May so it would coincide with the title. That would make it easier for the consumer to remember the release date. Plus they would get an extra day of revenue to add to the opening weekend box office take.

    by Blanket-Man

"[By opening on a Thursday,] they would get an extra day of revenue to add to the opening weekend box office take." Yes, but opening on Thursday would pretty much destroy any hope of breaking Spidey I's Opening Weekend Record of $114.8 mil. Since 3 is opening on the same weekend as 1, I'd say it has a damned good shot at taking the title.

Iron Man Release Date- May '08

    by Mad-Maximus

Why am I talking about Iron Man in a Spiderman 3 TB? Just saw that Marvel has issued a statement that Iron Man is being released the first weekend of May in '08. Thats a stipulation if they can get financing. But if they do then thats 3 years in a row for Marvel to kick of the summer season.

I'll guarantee you that any movie studio executive really doesn't care if they break a weekend "record" by having to release it on a Friday. The bottom line is that big budget movies are produced to make money not to entertain. Yes I know it doesn't make sense but if a studio can rake in more revenue by releasing it early during the week then by all means they are going to do it. Look at X3, look at Superman Returns (still undecided at box office). WB saw how much money that X3 made by releasing it on a Wednesday so they moved SR up to the 28th. Talk to any Sony movie executive and I'll bet you anything they do not care about beating a weekend record (Fri-Sun) unless it brings in more revenue.

Yes, I'll grant ya that SONY's looking at the bottom line above all else. But studios do like to trumpet records, too, if one's there for the taking. SR is opening in late June, when all the kiddies are out of school, so a Wednesday opening makes sense. X3 opened on Friday, May 26th, BTW, which led to its monster weekend...

    by skycrapper

Because it applies to all the central characters. Think about it. The four central characters (Parker, Osborn, Brock, and Sandman and maybe Dr. Conners) will all have to fight the darkness within themselves. I sense a theme here.

Agreed with your comment about Venom being a much better "villain" before he got watered down throughout the 90's. I wish the one it sounds like Raimi's giving us was the original Eddie Brock/Venom, but alas it doesn't look that way. And if there's no big white spider on the suit, it will just seem like a cop-out and ruin the watered-down Venom for me even more. But, I kinda-sorta got over robo-Goblin from SM1, so maybe, in time, I can get over a blueish-black spidey suit posing as the Venom "suit". Only time will tell.

I am a Spider-FREAK, but think the movies missed the mark in general. Oh well. I don't hate them, but really find them good for only 1 viewing due to the extreme amount of angst and drama and lack of excitement. I think Superman (a character I like, but never followed) will have more to offer. Plus. I hate Venom. Hate the whole "Venom Saga". Oh well.

Superman Returns looks just amazing and the early reviews are stellar. And now that I get to see a trailer for Spidey 3.......MAN I WANT TO SEE THIS FUCKER NOW!!!!!!!! Raime is a god and I have complete faith in him. He has not let us down yet. True, Spidey could lighten up a bit. But other than that, perfection!!!!

Considering how many men MJ has been through in 2 flicks (Flash, Harry, John J, Peter), is it any wonder Pete's caught the 'black goo'? Raimi is clearly making an STI educational film in disguise.....

Way to find a way to dog on Superman..(AGAIN) in a TB that was actually talking about Spider-Man. When Supes makes ass loads of cash, bones yer girlfriend and then has her make him a sandwich, I'm sure you'll still be talking smack, but hey, ya know, good luck with that. The Spidey trailer sounds pretty dope. I can't wait to see it.

Sandman's story, Venom's story, Gwenn Stacy's story, and Harry Osbourne's story all into one freakin' movie? And now there's talk of The Lizard, too? I'm sorry, but that's too much. Unless the story is 5 hours long, and I can't stand crying babies, cel phones going off and text "beeping" for that fucking long. Some moviegoers are assholes.

    Geek boner rising.......

    by vinceklortho

sorry, but now I'm more excited to see this than Supes Returns. But, once I satisfy my geek needs, I can sit back and watch(what I hear) is a pretty kick ass comic book movie in Superman. So, I'll be content when that time comes. Also, if this is a true telling of the teaser, why isn't there a shot of Eddie in this? I'm thinking now that he just might be a minor foil to Peter Parker the whole time, while he's dealing with the black suit and Sandy and Harry/Goblin. Then, obviously, Eddie will get a hold of the symbiote...but, what I really want to see is him actually as Venom and then Venom bites Sandman...kinda like the comics. However, are we actually going to see Venom at all? It's really interesting that they are not going to show Topher at all, yet the only news when they announced the two villans was that he was going to be a essential part of it. Maybe cause this is just a teaser and they will get more into the intense bits with a full trailer later. Like add in Gwen Stacey and Topher and show Thomas Hayden as Flint. whatever, I'm psyched. I was worried about the black goo thing, but it looks like they are going through with it. Can't wait to see the shot of black spidey perched in the rain. Sweet!

SPIDEY 3 teaser intrigues more than Superman Returns!

    by KAWS

Why am I NOT surprised. This teaser trailer alone is worth my my 9 bucks. But I'm still downloading Superman instead, and wait for Spidey 3's teaser to be released online. This teaser trailer actually sounds more intriguing, than anything I've heard of in the entire Superman Requel (as Moriarty calls it) movie or have seen in the TV Spots/trailers. Supes sounds like another King Kong film, long, boring and overhyped by Harry. You know this to be true.

  • June 23, 2006, 11:54 a.m. CST

    So no venom?

    by Mooly

Sound to me like this movie will be more of a venom set-up than actually having him as an enemy. Frankly, I love that idea and I'm glad to see Raimi is still on the ball with these movies and not just rushing crap out to please the studio. I'd rather a Venom story line be treatedt properly, with all the character development, that just tossing him in "Bane" style.

    batman sucked from multi-villians?

    by deadpool51

Im sick of hearing how the Batman franchise was killed cause of the use of multiple villians. COME ON!!! you mean it wasnt the neon batmobile, or the neon goons with neon tommy guns, or the nipple batsuit? Or maybe it was a shitty ass script with shitty ass direction. Multiply villians does not ruin a movie, bad use of them does.

    number 4...?

    by deadpool51

im skeptical there will be a number 4, I dont believe the actors are signed up for a 4th movie. I know Kirsten already said she wanted out. Which is why i think they are gonna do a twist on the comics and kill off MJ instead of Gwen. They already said SPidey loses someone very close to him, and Aunt mey woudl be to obviose of a person to kill off. But they again, why cast "whats his name" as brock if they were just gonna have venom for only the last 10min of the movie and not make a number 4 to finish off the franchise with one huge ass battle between Spidey and Venom. Who better do do the bad blackey on the silver screen the the Evil Dead man himself.

The movie black suit vs. comics black suit

    by Petro45

All of you complaining that the black suit in the movies is different from the comics, explain this to me: If a blob of black goo sticks to Peter Parker's skin, and then forms a new, totally different costume around him, would he say "cool, I have a new costume," or "holy shit, get this shit off me, something fucked up is going on!" In the comics they could get away with the venom-suit because they had the whole "I thought it came from an alien costume-making machine" angle, but its not like they can duplicate that in the movie. You complain about the slightest deviation from the comics, but the storyline you're hoping for would require Peter Parker to be an idiotic fucktard - I think that would qualify as more of a "deviation" than the spider on his suit not being white. Here's how its going to play out - the black goo attaches to Peter's suit, not his skin. It only changes the color of the suit, it does not redesign the suit. Peter goes along with it because he thinks that some substance merely changed the color of his suit, and that its no big deal. However, when VENOM, comes into existence, the suit will attach itself to Eddie Brock's skin. Then you'll get the white spider, slithering suit, everything you're hoping for. And it will make a helluva lot more sense in the context of the story.

  • June 23, 2006, 12:50 p.m. CST

    Petros45 is 100% correct....

    by deadpool51

First off , in the comic, didnt the black suit first attach to spiderman over his original suit? if so, then the movie wouldnt be deviating. Second They already confirmed in an interview with either Avi or one of the other producers that Venom will have the White spider. Thats how the "non comic book" movie goers will be able to tell the big difference between the black spidey and Venom

  • June 23, 2006, 1:37 p.m. CST

    DeadPool51 is 100% correct

    by BilboRing

More than one villain did not kill Batman. The fact that they just plain sucked is what killed them. Other than Batman Begins, every Batman movie ever released has just been a big pile of shit. Shitty acting, plots, directing, costumes, etc. They were just gay jit.

NO BACK-TO-BACK and Hey, SUPERMAN WILL RULE OVER SPIDEY

    by moto

Let me confirm this right now. They are NOT shooting Spidey 3 and 4 back-to-back. I work at Sony and know this for sure. Secondly, anyone who thinks that Superman will be overshadowed by Spider-Man is just crazy. Superman is an American Icon. This Superman flick will overshadow Spider-man completely based just off of that factor alone. Personally, the only good Spider-Man moments were the first forty minutes or so of the first film. Spider-Man has been a filler for audiences while Superman gestated over the years. Well, he's finally back and in capable hands with Singer. The Spider-Man movies have been soooo frickin' overrated. And when it rakes in the cash, blows Spider-Man out of the water, AICN fanboys will ofcourse rip it to shreds, despite the outstanding success and critical praise that will come along with this release. When audiences hear that Superman music that they've remembered throughout their lives since the late 70s, it will send chills down their spine. Superman Returns is going to be the event of the summer. Pirates will be great, but the debut of a new Superman Franchise is a pop culture event. Even if the movie is somewhat good and not perfectly excellent, it will be a smashing success. So pack away your webslingers and pull out the true owner of the blue and red. Superman came first almost 60 years ago. There would be no Spider-Man without Supes. Stan Lee even says it. Spider-Man 3 will have its day... but there's a better hero in town.

    Spidey 4....

    by vinceklortho

I'm going with deadpool on this one as well. There has been hardly any talk of Spidey 4 cause of the actors wanting to jump ship...we all know that they only signed on for two sequels when the first one came out. However, I really hope that they do leave it massively open ended and not do a battle royale of sorts with tons of villans. We got conflict with Harry, conflict with Sandy...just mix those two in and throw in black suit with Gwen and MJ love triangle. Good enough...have Brock in the background messing around and suddenly showing up..pissed as fuck at then end of the movie. Remember those shots of Spidey swinging and everybody cheering? Let's say that is the end when Spidey confronts his demons, kicks ass and everything is back to normal...Then all of a sudden, this bastard takes over...Venom. End the movie there.

    by deadpool51

First off let me start by saying i am no way bashing the superman movie and i am super excited to see it, haveing friends and co workers that have worked on it, BUT......You have to be retarded to think that Pirates of the caribean isnt goin to over take superman in the box office. (thats why it got moved to the 28th, to get a few days more jump away from pirates's realease date, they even said it) Yes tons and tons of peeple are gonna see superman. But are tons of people gonna go back and see it 5 times like girls are goin to go back to see Bloom and Depp? I think not. Also spidey 3 is on track to being the biggest Budget Film of all time. They arent throwing there money away knowing they arent getting it back on this one (especially with the spidey franchise being the only thing thats keeping sony alive) Superman is gonna be big and huge, but its goin to be over taken by the pirate sequals and spider 3 hands down. Oh and you say Superman is an america Icon? well so is Batty and spiderman. Go ask any person on the street to name off some super heroes and I bet a 100% of the time they will say, superman, batman, and spiderman together and not in that order. all three are houshold names and are big as each other.

That's how Brock aquires the Black Suit from spidey - it's in his sperm. You all know what sperm is, right? I just don't think the anticipation is there. I think it'll be closer to BATMAN BEGINS numbers than SPIDER-MAN. SUPERMAN is an icon, and I respect his stature as the world's first super-hero. But ya know what? by moto

I just don't like Spider-Man. Many people don't. The movies that is. Bad CGI. Tobey Maguire's line delivery is just annoying now. He's terrible with the Spider-Man wisecracks, which are the center of the character in many respects. I'm not a Superman freak or anything and yes, I know Spider-Man and Batman are icons as well, but nowhere near Superman. The guys been around for six decades people. He was a merchandising phenom. Just check out the LOOK, UP IN THE SKY doc to see how far back and how wide he stretches. You're crazy to think that Spider-Man and Batman even come close. You have to look past your generation, and look backwards. I don't fault anyone for liking Spider-Man movies. To each his own. I just think that Superman is something different and will reach a wider audience than Spider-Man. Yeah, who cares in the long run. They ARE just movies. But hey, it's a discussion....

I don't have a lot of faith that Venom will look very good to begin with. Full CGI characters rarely work (Gollum and Kong are the 2 exceptions). Superman is going to create a massive shockwave throughout the world this summer. Pirates and Superman are the money makers this year. I am more excited by the Punisher sequel than Spider 3. Spidey 4

    by alienindisguise

If there is a 4 and Kirsten Dunst bails, good riddance! She's always sucked as an "actress" and was never hot enough to be MJ in the first place. I personally hope the 3rd film is the last because if it keeps going, then the really cheesy villains would be sure to show up. Vulture, Electro, Rhino...yikes!

    is that right DoomII....

    by deadpool51

so you work in post production i guess? cause i do, and we worked on spiderman 2. So you will realize that what makes effects good is MONEY and TIME. Gollum was perfect in two towers cause they started working on him years before that film came out, and got tons of money to put into him for the second film, (hence why u only see his face in the first one, which is a different Gollum model, and why most of the other effects were horrid.) Davey jones in pirates two they have been working on for over 2 years, Just on his character. Spidey 3 they have two characters ( sandman and the venom symbiot) that will have similiar fluid and particle like effects. There budget is enormous (biggest in history) which will buy them the time and people needed to make them photo real. They did not have that on the first spiderman.

Return of the king was based on a book..

    by godhatesyou

Are we comparing Spiderman 1 and 2 too the Lord of the Rings and the Two Towers? All four movies were overhyped..And Return of the King was the worst because it missed out all the stuff of the book.....it became a comic book movie....the Gollum show.

your saying it sucked cause it wasnt like the book? Everything doesnt convert from paper to Film, its almost impossible to do. I'm sick of people compairing movies to books, they are different, get over it. not to mention someone doesnt want to devote 10 years of there life to making a copy of something. they want to add there own taste to it. Thats the whoel point.

    bad CGI?

    by vinceklortho

I'm no expert, but I thought Spidey 2 had terrific fx. I mean, seriously, they were not bad. The fight with Doc Ock and Aunt May on the building was fantastic. Not to mention great flow between real life actor and cgi animation. First one had decent fx too....not trying to start a weird comic book fight, but I thought Spidey 2 had some of the best fx that year.

Everyone thought fellowship of the ring was the worst..

    by wolack22

but it followed the book the closest in my opinion... one part that really irked me was frodo's almost death by shelob. In the book it was far more dramatic... you really did think frodo was dead, and it went into sam's mindset about where he thought he might be going with the ring, and how shaken he was by going on without frodo. Plus, we didn't get the iconic moment where sam's anger boils over when gollum grabs sam and forces him to watch frodo getting attacked by shelob. Damn just to get that one scene in, that's all i cared about.

Spidey 2 did a great job on doc ocks tenticles. The fight scene on the clock tower with spidey and Aunt May was one of our compositing sequences. some of the scene were alittle Cg looking but thats what you get, you cant put all your money and time into every sequeance to make it perfect. so you put it into the really big scenes or the close ups and the rest you have to let go ( hence some of the crappy hobbit composite scenes in LOTR) Those shots get the stamp, what we call , CBB. which stands for Could Be Better ( but we dont have the time and money to make it perfect )

    Concerns about the Symbiote's origin

    by J Jonah_Jameson

All they have to do is adapt what the 90's cartoon did to introduce it. It's as simple as that. With the introduction of John Jameson I think that is a good chance of that being the case. The convoluted Secret Wars origin is not what's important. It's that the symbiote is a shape shifting alien parasite. That's what really matters. I'm not saying visuals isn't important. This is a movie after all. Of course it is! And what I see now from the black costume is not all that thrilling. The alien black costume was awesome and the only one that can compare to the red and blues and it's sad that Spider-man will never be seen wearing it. Also. Come on. They changed it because they didn't want people to confuse Spider-man with Venom? Are people not fammiliar with the comic really going to be bothered with that? I think it was an easy concept to follow seeing as it wasn't changed in a saturday morning cartoon for kids. You know what concepts don't work? Organic spinnerettes. Let's look at the reason apologists give for having Peter never making the mechanical web shooters. Number one. More realisitic (whatever the hell that means in a comic book adaptation). Having spinnerettes develop in your hands where they dont show up in Spiders is not realistic anyway. Oh but they do these things to help people not fammiliar with the character understand it more you say? Let me tell you after I watched the Spider-man movie everyone I was with that wasn't fammiliar with Spidey kept asking why he had to put his fingers in that funny position to shoot the webs. How do you explain that? It makes no sense because he does that to launch mechanical shooters so they go off when he makes a fist. So in essence what they tried to do had the opposite effect and was even more ridiculous. Plus it dumbs down the powers and abbilites of the symbiote the same as Doc Ocks sentient arms. I'll be even more fair and pretend i don't read comics and say i'd take almost any concept for the Green Goblin's costume so long as it looks good. But whoever designed it must of been blind. I mean add some purple to it or something. Sheesh. I certainly hope that what we are hearing about is the actual costume covered with the symbiote. But it probably unlikely.

This time around we have Sandman's ailing mother, more financial troubles with spidey and aunt mae, a black-suit that is crumbling spidey's morality, mary-jane's death, eddie's inability to measure up to any form of success and sadness, ........ oh god im going to cry... damn comic book and it's sadness... oh ya and gobots ruled, i had those. Venom - lame villain or great one??

    by Petro45

People who thought Venom was a great villain in the comics are upset because Raimi is treating him differently in the film. People who thought Venom was a terrible villain in the comics are upset because they don't want him anywhere near the movie.-----------People in the first category, you can ignore this post - there's no accounting for your taste in any event, so I'm not going to waste my time preaching to you. But people in the second category, take heart -- I too thought Venom sucked as a character in the books. He has Spider-Man's suit, but he's stronger because he's a body-builder, yeah! And he has a really big tongue that looks gross and licks people!! And he talks about the "innocents" a lot while murdering people! What a great villain! Uch. But the different route they're taking in the movie could be intriguing - by casting Topher, it seems like they're really going for more of the "dark Spidey doppelganger with a grudge" vibe, rather than the "mutant body builder with a tongue" vibe. The initial concept of Venom in the comics was good, but the execution was shite. I have hope that Raimi's going to get it right.

    Venom

    by Seph_J

Raimi is about as close to legend status as a human can get. Spidey 2 was of a quality that is almost unheard of in 'action' films, and especially comic-book ones! I trust the man with my life. He will do no wrong. Think Superman Returns is good? I hope so. But I guarantee that Spidey 3 will enter levels of previously-unreached spectacularity on an unprescedented scale of epic, grandoise filmic and emotional proportions. Bring it on. I love it all. Love love love love love.

    by deadpool51

you really didnt read the original venom saga did you? first he isnt stronger cause he is a body builder. He is stronger because eddie is excepting the suit totally taking his body over unlike spiderman who was fighting it. The tounge thing is to show that the suit is a monster and not just an outfitt. Adn the innocent thing... he never murdered anyone (carnage did) Venom didnt, infact he woudl save people that were close to gettign killed while he was fighting spidey. I remmebr a 2 page board of ven holdign back a lion at a zoo who got out of its cage, from almost eating two kids, with one hand and strangling spidey with the other. one of my favorite comic book moments. Just shows that all he is obessed about is killing peter parker not civilians like other villians. thats what makes him so interesting, he doesnt care about ruling the world, or robbing a bank, he just wants spidey dead.

    RAIMI A LEGEND??? HOW?

    by moto

To whoever said that Raimi is a legend: What makes him a legend? Steven Spielberg is a legend. Stanley Kubrick is a legend. Raimi's directed hmmm, a couple of sub par but entertaining independant horror movies, and two pretty good superhero movies. That makes him a legend? This is what I'm talking about. He's a good guy but soooo overrated with AICN fanboys. He's made some good movies besides those mentioned, one of my favorites being A SIMPLE PLAN, but he's HARDLY anything close to a legend.

"What's with Doritos commercial featuring Godzilla?"

    by Triumph poops!

Deathticle, my guess is the 1988 GODZILLA movie bombed so badly that the accounting department at Sony was nothing less than ecstatic and dancing on their desks when someone walked in and said "Hey, we'll give you 100 bucks to license some Godzilla footage to use in our chips commercial." Seriously, there's no hype or subtle build-up here for a new movie. For crying out loud, would ANYONE want to see a sequel to that abomination? Which is a shame. I thought Emmerich and Devlin delivered a fun summer popcorn flick with ID4 and as a result I thought they'd do the same with GODZILLA (hey, the teasers seemed to promise a good movie) but unfortunately their GODZILLA missed the mark by a billion miles and just totally sucked ass. Starting with the most basic fubar of all: Why the hell would you license a major, geek-beloved, world-known character like Godzilla and NOT make him LOOK like Godzilla? Yes, yes, I know -- that actually had to do with Toho Studios insisting as part of the licensing deal that he had to look different in the American version. But seriously, at that point, you'd think someone in the meeting room would have looked right at the Toho guys and said, "Why the fuck would we want to give you guys a sack of money to license Godzilla if we can't actually USE Godzilla?" Then again, that's Hollywood suit mentality for you once again since obviuosly all the dolts in THAT meeting thought it WAS a good idea!

As for SPIDEY 3, I agee with others -- MJ will die

    by Triumph poops!

Just a hunch. You have to figure that will (1) give Dunst what she wants, namely out of her contract and out of the series since she's openly said she's tired of doing the films... (2) it will play to her vanity as an actress since it will give her the one thing all actors whine and plead for, namely a big death scene... (3) It will give the movies a sense of symmetry when Green Goblin 2 tosses her off a bridge and kills her (much like the comic death of Gwen Stacy) at which point everyone in the audience (that is, the non-comics readers, but movie series fans) will say "Wow! Isn't that clever the way they set that up all the way back in the first movie?"... (4) Raimi has already stated Peter will lose someone close to him... and (5) for the purists out there, Peter will be back with who he should have been with all along, the REAL love of his life, Gwen Stacy. Plus, now there will be fresh blood and new eye candy for the next movie or two. Of course, as you switch out the women, the bigger question becomes at what point does Toby become too old or outgrow the role or become too tired of doing it as well and they have to switch out him?

Raimi recently stated that there are going to be 4 villians in the movie...speculation is that Black Cat is the 4th villian he is referring to....why the hell is he trying to cram in 4 major villians in one movie for?...there's no way he can give them all the proper screen time...it's gonna feel rushed...not to mention the fact that Gwen Stacy also is gonna be introduced in this movie as well...he better expand it to 4 hours for all this...is Raimi planning on leaving after this film so he wants to cram in all his ideas into this one last big hurrah?...he's overdoing it

  • June 24, 2006, 1:29 a.m. CST

In Raimi's DEFENSE regarding numerous villians..

    by moto

... He was talking about a couple of cameos that show up. Possible set up for future movies. Nothing to extreme. There will NOT be 4 major villains fighting Spider-Man. Just Sandman and Venom. James Franco will be battling his demons, but the Green Goblin won't reappear in his new form until later in the film to possibly set up the fourth. So while Spider-Man is doing his whole Spidey movie villian fighting thing with those two, we'll see a side story of Franco's issues. I get excited about these films... and then I'm just let down, but who knows, maybe the third will be better. At least I like the villians this time around.

Multiple villains: It works in KILL BILL...

    by ZeroCorpse

By my count, KILL BILL VOL. 1 had about 100 villains, and From Dusk Till Dawn had a similar number, as well as a very large number of heroes. What made Batman suck was the hokey direction Burton took from the beginning, and the fruity continuation of that trend in Schumaker's version. I'm sorry, but any movie in which you find GIANT PENQUINS WITH ROCKETS STRAPPED TO THEIR BACKS BEING COMMANDED BY A GOO-SPITTING DANNY DeVITO IN LONG JOHNS is doomed from the beginning. Burton's lack of respect for Batman (killing hundreds, not being a decent detective, basically being James Bond in a bat suit, etc.) is why the Batman movies sucked. Nicholson's hammy Joker being played as Jack Torrence in clown makeup was a phoned-in performance if I ever saw one. Schumaker just illuminated the Burton crap with neon.

This is why some people don't like Venom

    by wolack22

Because they wan't to be different, and seem cool cause they enjoy the early spider-man villains. The early spider-man villains may be alright, but I dont see a difference between their character significance and venom's. There is no dynamic difference. There is no reason to suggest that mysterio, electro, lizard, scorpion, etc are better than Venom. All this bs about venom being the evil spider-man is completely unsubstaniated as a reason for hating venom. Who cares if venom is an evil spidey. Some of the greatest villains in the history of literature and comics were villains who mimicked the hero's intelligance, strength, and ingenuity except in evilness. In conclusion, they just want to be different and cool. They know the majority of fans enjoy venom, and find him just as intriguing as the old spidey-villains... they just want to complain.

    by Kelg

I think there must be something about writers and directors who were weaned mainly on cartoons and comics feeling that they have to make changes so they can be taken more seriously. Burton did it, Raimi did it, but Donner and Puzo--nope, they didnt do it. No need to put Superman's underwear on the inside, or get rid of the xray vision(as Raimi might say: unrealistic! he would melt his glasses!!!). I suspect it is because Donner and Puzo came from well-rounded careers so they didnt feel insecure about a superhero movie. Sure--changing the webshooters in order to make an implausible fantasy movie more plausible was Hollywood idiocy at its best. But the stupidest ideas were throwing away 20 years of Spider-man history and pushing the married storyline from the late 80s by making Parker have a crush on Mary Jane since age 6, with a window maybe 12 inches apart from her, and never talking to her. Worst cliche that even a soap opera comic would avoid. On top of that, here's a guy given super powers, and the only thing he can think of is making enough money to buy a car to impress MJ. Come on! Next: turning Flash Thompson into a goon. Raimi may have read Spider-man, but he sure didnt get it. Another big sin was making Parker have a fight with Uncle Ben for no good reason other than to give him a heavyhanded bit of extra guilt(and making the character less dimensional than his comics counterpart by having the fight promoter rip him off just before the burglar comes by). Wasnt it more dramatic that he became arrogant? Then in Spider-man 2, the problems continue right with the opening shot of Mary Jane on a billboard--here we go with the love story again(Lois Lane was far more central to Superman history and even they didnt hit you over the head with it). Turning Dock Ock into another lovesick sap who gives Parker advice: "woo her with poetry--worked for me!" Oh-and then they throw a nod to the early Spidey story where he loses his powers-but of course, completely fuck it up. Did I mention that threw out Spidey's habit of mocking villains? Stan Lee must be rolling in his grave. Oh right he isnt dead. Well he will be rolling soon enough!

    Kelg is a genius!

Wow, you're absolutely right! They should have included every single bit of obscure Spiderman story detail! From every comic! In the same chronology! ---- Peter's parents are killed by Albert Malik, the third Red Skull while infiltrating his criminal organization? Cool ok - make sure you drop in a flashback to explain that he's the THIRD red skull mind you! --- Peter makes the spider webbing himself? Sure! He could have knocked them - hes good at science right, but dont forget his spider-themed portable spotlight! nor his poisoned toxic stingers... he can kill the bad guys easier then! --- You got the love interest thing wrong tho... Liz Allen was the first love interest... but she marries Harry... So MJ totally shouldn't have appeared yet! Not before Betty Brant anyway, who marries Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds (very important plot line!). - and don't forget that Gwen, pregnant by Norman Osborn, secretly gives birth to twins, who, told by Norman that Spider-Man had killed their mother, attempt to kill Spider-Man in revenge as adults. That's the most important part - you could follow it up in Spiderman 10 - Revence of Norman's Kids! ---- Also don't forget Peter dates Sarah Rushman during a time when he believes Mary Jane to be dead; however, she turns out to be the S.H.I.E.L.D.-brainwashed mutant Marrow! ---- Wow dude! Those films would have been much better! But you have to include everything, ok? That includes iron-spidey, spider-girl and the bit where Spidey sees his Uncle Ben alive but was unaware that this Uncle Ben came from a different reaility. Just in the middle of a conversation, the Hobgoblin from the year 2211 appears and takes Spider-Man away! Wow... This will all make perfect sense and fit a smooth logical chronology of course------------ Or do you perhaps wish to pick and choose from the comics which parts you like best? And a film is only a couple of hours long - you would have to condense some of the stories to fit them - and which villains to choose and how to portray them and so on and so on.... Of course YOU would absolutely make the BEST deicisions FAR BETTER then Sam Raimi could EVER make them. YOU love spidey better then ANYONE and have more RESPECT for the character then silly old Sam... Poor old Sam Raimi - he'll never be as good as you at making films...... He cries himself to sleep at night i'm sure.

but I like and respect Sam Raimi quite a bit, if anyone can pull it off, I'd like to think it's him. Can't believe it's still a year away...sigh.

Venom did kill people. At least he did towards the beginning. Sometimes he would suffocate them with the suit or webbing. He did often express remorse, though. And meccabilly.... good points. It seems a bit excessive and nitpicky to ask that the comice be followed 100%. As for me, I already know the comics, so I don't mind seeing the little twists and turns and new stuff.

    Hanging by a... missing web?

    by jeeefer

The ending of the Spider-Man 3 teaser trailer is striking for more than one reason... the red-suited Spidey is hanging onto NOTHING! It appears that webbing is clinched between his feet, and his fingers look like they're gripping something, but no strand of web can be seen in his hands... he's hanging in thin air! The true secret of Spiderman 3 is that Spidey can now levitate indefinitely, or has invisible webbing... frame through the ending shot of the teaser trailer to see for yourself.
