    by mr. profit

Seriously, Futurama is a solid and funny cartoon. Comedy Central should order more than 13 since it is bound to do great with DVD sales. Also, what shows outside of South Park and Reno 911 do they have? Sure there's the Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Mencia. But all their other original programming needs help. Dont those fuckers have 50 Million to spend now that Chappelle went Batshit Crazy and left to throw Block Parties? I'm sure Bender can make the line "I'm Rick James Bitch!" funny.

good news indeed fellow geeks! But, now I have to rain on our parade here. I am also, like a fellow talkbacker above, kinda apprehensive that they are doing new episodes cause they might end up sucking ass....just seems to be a natural progression for when these sort of things happen. However, it's still a funny show and I'm curbing my nerdy expectations a little. In reality, isn't that why we all think these shows kinda suck when they are brought back or continue on season after season? These shows get so good at a point that there is no way they can reach our geeky expectations when they continue on making episodes...however, let's toast to what we already know is a solid show getting a lift for our viewing pleasure this coming season.

Futurama v. South Park v. Family Guy

    by idledead

When it comes down to these shows, I'll just say this: Futurama had the best average across its run. Family Guy probably had the biggest laughs. South Park had the greatest individual episodes -- Scott Tenerman, Ninja Weapons, etc. But if you had to pick an episode at random from one of these shows, I'll go with Futurama. I can't remember a clunker in the bunch. Great animation, too.

    by mrboinfoint

Been catching them on Adult Swim, because I had other things to watch on Sunday nights. removed from the shit sandwich of War At Home and American Dad, they hold up surprisingly well. Sure, all the characters are up for grabs, and the plots don't make sense, but I never watched for story anyway. Futurama on teh other hand, went out on such a high note, with so many quality episodes, there's little chance that Zombie Futurama will disappoint.

13 episodes is 1 season on Comedy Central. This is how they do all their shows. They order a 13-episode season, and if the show does well they order another season. So don't assume 13 episodes is all you'll see from Comedy Central, unless the show fails (again).

    by heisenberg85

What the hell are you talking about, three years for new venture bros? Although yes, the pilot initially aired back in the february 03, the first season aired from summer of 04 until october 04. It comes back this week. The gap between each of these times is about a year and half, exactly as long as it will be until new futurama. Also, they've stated on the commentaries that the turn around time for a simpsons ep is about a year, so assuming that roughly the same is true for Futurama eps, and given the extra time they'll need to get everything back together, a year and a half is perfectly reasonable. And last but not least, this news totally makes my week.

Hey, any Futurama writers reading this? Because here's my two cents, from a true devotee of the show: (1) PLEASE cut the Bender-centric episodes ... they're by far the weakest of the bunch. He's a break-away character, sure, but he's a bit like dill - he'll make the show taste fresh, but too much can overpower all other flavor. (2) Okay, ZOIDBERG IS POOR, we get it!!! Can we bring back the old Zoidberg who had character and a lots of "stupid traditions"? Why reduce one of the funniest characters to one tired joke? (3) Okay, from a big fan, the lame puns have got to go. "Miss Parallel Universe" is kind of cute ... "Robosexual" is kind of funny ... "Urectum," okay, that IS hilarious, but the rest of them are just "kind of" humorous. (4) Finally, I love the STORIES. I want to see Fry and Leela move on. I want to see more about why Fry is in the future. I want to care about the characters because you got me invested in them, damnit! I guess what I'm saying is, DON'T GO ALL SIMPSONS ON US with a stock set of recycled stories that always loop back on themselves!!! I never, NEVER want an "in-joke" about how Fry never changes his clothes, how they've been the same age for decades, how nothing ever changes. LET THE CHARACTERS AGE AND CHANGE! If you only have thirteen episodes, make it an ARC! Blow up the Earth if you have to, just DO SOMETHING that shows you can do more than re-write the same stupid catch-phrases over and over again (Simpsons, looking back in your direction). The sitcom is dying as an artform. LET IT DIE. Think HBO instead - quality storylines that develop and evolve over time. ... Okay, sorry, I've been thinking about this for too long. But I love that show, is that so wrong?

    by savage_henry

Of course we'll all be bitching on here about how the quality has suffered when they first come out, but then we'll be crying in another 3-4 years about how they absolutely rule and more episodes should be ordered. For some reason, Futurama is one of those shows that needs to age a bit to be appreciated. Also, I agree with the TB'er above who said that Fry's dog needs to be brought back. That final scene in that episode crushed me.

    by mrboinfoint

Typical whiney fanboy bullshit. Can never fucking be satisfied with fucking grade-a pure concentrated greatness. The Simpsons became what it is because all of the good writers went over to Futurama. They do indeed acknowledge and accept that the characters age and that Fry's been in the future for four years. Although they may not acknowledge that two additoinal years have passed. They don't need to explain the clothes in a sad, in-jokey way because it's simply one of the tropes of science fiction that everyone always wears the same "uniform". Bender-centric is bad? What kind of electricity are you jacking on to? Even though he's probably the richest, funniest character this side of Homer and maybe even Kramer, the writers know that the focus of the show is Fry, and won't stray fomr that for more than maybe four eps a season. I'll give you the Zoidberg complaint, 'cause I like him much better as insatiably hungry than poor. But as has been said in the commentaries, the creators had a plan when they began the show. They had ideas, secrets and plotlines that couldn't even be used til the fifth or sixth season, and there's still lots more to explore. There's absolutely no need to worry, and no reason to complain before the fact. Just follow the advice in my subject line and enjoy what you get, because the alternative is that we get nothing.

You can't assume that the audience for both shows are different or that one show is smarter than the other. I know Family Guy has no plot to it, and many jokes bomb, but it's still funny. Futurama on the other hand has better story telling, and some really funny jokes (some of which you can catch after the fact on repeat viewings) like Arrested Development or old school Simpson's episodes. Why must there always be a war? Can't you like and enjoy both?

13 episodes per season is normal for cable...

    by jim jam bongs

Cable networks tend to fund the production of only 13 episodes per season for a series. So Comedy Central's renewal of Futurama is considered a full season order. Besides The Tick, another animated series which should return with new episodes on cable is The Critic. We need Jay Sherman now especially to gripe about the state of Hollywood and movies.

Yeah, the series didn't automatically vibe with me the way I assumed it would, but after watching it for a few years I realized that, quite simply, it was the natural progression of the Simpsons and it was just as funny and brilliant, if not moreso. At any rate, Futurama eventually became my favorite cartoon ever . . not only because of it's relevance and wit, but because of its heart. The series is touching and hilarious, at the same time, and what other cartoon...sans the Simpsons 9 years ago...can you say that about!?
