Darwyn Cooke's DC: THE NEW FRONTIER A Made-For-DVD Toon??

Published at:  Jun 22, 2006 12:32:32 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

How much of Darwyn Cook’s beautiful and exciting homage to the Silver Age can Bruce Timm hope to cram into an 88-minute cartoon?

I imagine if they’re going really going to turn DC: The New Frontier into a made-for-DVD animated movie, we’re going to hear about it at San Diego Comic Con in about a month. Until then, chew on this:

Herc,

Longtime fan, first time contributor (to you anyway I gave Harry a tip a few years back about a Guy Ritchie war movie that didnt pan out but lets not dwell on that... )

Stan Berkowitz and Bruce Timm are working on an Direct to video asaptation of the super-hero epic "DC: The New Frontier"!

Im a Wikipedia editor, and one of the pages I created was for Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier comic book miniseries ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC:_The_New_Frontier ). In the last few days someone some info from a Worlds Finest (the website) interview in which Stan Berkowitz (one of the producers of the JLA cartoon) in which Berkowitz revealed he was working on an direct to video adaptation of New Frontier with Bruce Timm producing.

If you look at the New Frontier wiki article the info has been removed by another editor because it is now an unsourced claim as the Berkowitz interview has been amended to remove the revelation, presumabaly at Warner Animation's behest (though its still there in the history of the article if you know how to check).

Also further corroboration comes from the official DC animation forum page http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?p=2200052 where the admins have posted the message "As many of you have undoubtedly read, a new DTV was announced yesterday in an interview on WF. Information was prematurely released; in the coming months I'm sure we'll get an official announcement. As such, posts referencing this film have been removed. We're sorry for the inconvenience and respectfully request that all news of the DTV be kept to yourselves for the time being. I've no doubt half the internet knows about the DTV at this point, but that is moot. Thank you for your cooperation."

As youll learn if you read the wiki article the comic was done in an Timmverse animated style, it won loads of awards and featured the whole extended DC pantheon (though it did focus on Green Lantern Hal Jordan the most). It will be interesting to see what elements they keep and lose, especially given the focus on Jordan and the period setting.

If you use the tip call me "Rick Flag" (my previous aicn pseudonym was Matt Regan, but thats now been claimed by someone else!)

Sorry for wasting your time with this if you have already got the tip. Keep up the great work!!

Could be the greatest animated superhero project EVER.

    by robogeek.com

NEW FRONTIER is a masterpiece of the comic medium, and would lend itself brilliantly to animation. (FYI, Cooke did storyboards for both Timm's Batman and Superman animated series - and animated the Batman Beyond main title sequence.) This would go a long way towards making up for JLU's premature cancellation.

    DC Animation & Cartoon Network

    by koozyk

There is a nice article @ Newsarama that explains possibly why JLU/Titans and now possibly Krypto are being axed @ CN. Basically it's all about licensing and CN wants more of their properties to get licensing opp's. This is why we are seeing so many new properties creeping out of CN, they are planning huge toy lines for their new shows to make tons of cash. They just didn't make much money directly from JLU & Titans.

Regardless, I'm real excited by this, as long as the quality is better than previous DTV efforts (Batwoman/Mr. Freeze/Ultimate Avengers).

    Problems with the story

    by hughsheridan

Hi Im the spy who reported the story (Herc left in the part where I said that I was the wiki editor who started the DC new Frontier article which pretty much gives away my id, but its not like anyone was gonna go look it up).
If you are interested in finding ouit babout the series check out the wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC:_The_New_Frontier.

Anyway though the news is exciting, there are problems with the story. Its got a huge cast, tons of continuity and most difficult of all - a pretty lame threat\bad guy of the strange unrelatable alien intelligence variety. Which may be kinda traditional for Silver age DC (Starro the Conquerer is just like that) but the ending of new frontier is really just a big team up with no sense of a matching of wits or a conflict of personalities that mark out the finales of the best dramatic stories in my opinion.

The strongest suspense in the story comes from the government's ambigous actions (King Faraday and pals kidnap martian manhunter) and thats resolved 3\4 of the way through.

Just my two cents, but I hope Berkowitz and co. look at these aspects and put their own spin on things.

    Hugh Sheridan\Rick Flag

ppart ofteresting part is the government

I'll admit, I had a small orgasm when I first read this news on Newsarama. I look forward to this like no other animation project since Justice League made it's debut.

Bless you, prestigious wiki editor. If this is true, it's great news, and I am a better man for hearing it. I hope they keep it in the style and period of the comic.

I think she looks appropriate. Sadly, the Wonder Woman baseline has shifted too far, and when she doesn't look like a 14 yr old Kate Moss people get scared.
BTW, New Frontiers is highly stylized,so before you start crying about how small Martian Manhunter's head is, or how neat everyone's haircuts are, try to keep that in mind.

I have the cure for your full-figure-phobia:

    by mr inbetween

Take two Crumb comics, (stare at the gigantor women with thighs like sequoias and boobs like missiles, for ten minutes, or until you get used to it, then go back and look at NF Wonder Woman.)and call me in the morning. Except, don't call me.
Ever read Love and Rockets? Well you might want to try the Crumb technique before reading that too.
How come nobody seems too upset over the big red granny panties Supes is wearing?
I'm all for them, of course, I am just surprised people aren't uniformly freaked by every NF style element that can't be found in comics today. Aw, nevermind, I give up. Wonder Woman and Robin should be indistinguishable from one another.

    by tjrmusic

It would be great news to hear that DC will start doing direct to DVD animation releases based on their chracters. Even better news when you confirm that Bruce Timm will be in charge. And that other guy is right about doing each book as individual full lenght release. Because the fans will support this.
