Stillson Returns!! Sunday Brings The First DEAD ZONE Of 2006!!

Published at:  Jun 18, 2006 4:08:50 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

TV’s “The Dead Zone” continues to take liberties with Stephen King’s great novel.

When we last saw evil politician Greg Stillson last August, he had to turn to Johnny Smith to find his missing girlfriend.

In tonight’s fifth (and presumably final) season premiere, Johnny tries to stop the same girl from marrying Stillson.

Since Johnny’s much-publicized predictions have been coming true for years now, will people finally start taking him seriously?

Entertainment Weekly gives it a “B-plus” and says:

… Johnny … may be on the verge of stopping malevolent mastermind Janus (Martin Donovan), if he could just figure out what the guy's up to. What's at stake? Only the end of the world …

Dead Zone is a very good show

    by vanlingomungo

I say this not to embrace Anthony Michael Hall, but, rather, to prevent first posters. I believe my job is done.

    I like Dead Zone!

    by derlanghaarige

Although they had lots of boring (and sometimes stupid)episodes, they also had some great ones (remember the planecrash episode?) and sometimes they even got just single moments that makes it worth watching! Especially since Eerie Indiana's Karl Schaefer joined the crew!

it's probably that evil politician Greg Stillson

    by newc0253

either that or it's that evil Gavin MacLeod or George "Goober" Lindsay.

Anthony Michael Hall vs. Mother Nature

    by darth_baltar

c'mon people! my girlfriend rented the first three seasons on DVD and at first the series was pretty tight, but once we had the episode of the tornado chasing Anthony Michael around, and THEN him confronting and talking to the twister... ...I'd say the fat chick wore out her vocal chords on that one, and that the shark had been raped repeatedly rather than just jumped...

    by darth_baltar

...and while on the subject of deviant sexual conduct, that animation of Nacho and Harry in the upper left corner is JUST WRONG!

    Dead Zone Movie/George Bush

    by mattw

I always think of the Dead Zone movie whenever I see George Bush - A politician determined to cause the end of the world who needs to be stopped.

    Dead Zone

    by thefutureoffilm

While the series does have its fair share of weak stand alone episodes, the series overall is still in my opinion one of the best shows on cable. Did anyone ever catch that episode where Stillson was with some people going over the electronic voting machines and talking about how to rig them to his advantage, and how that episode came out before the election? I digress, but the series has been solid all these years, and I can't wait to watch it tonight...on the second showing at midnight cause I ain't missin' Entourage.

Almost Makes You Forget About Walken...Almost

    by dirtyratbastard

The Johnny Smiths portrayed in the Movie and in the Television show are so radically different to me that I am ok with that. Walken's Johnny Smith was a dead man walking, a doomed soul, and it was our journey as viewers to watch the decline, and hope that he could stop Greg Stillson. Anthony Michael Hall's Johnny Smith is someone who dare I say it, evokes a sense of hope. He didn't fall apart when he heard the news about his girl and his son, he was strong about it, and he was a more solid man as a result. This Johnny Smith is what I like to think of as the natural superhero. He lives within constant sacrifice, he suffers the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, and he doesnt wear a costume or hide his identity. I only hope this show continues at least until the 100th episode, which is quite a ways away with their abbreviated seasons.

Hopefully not the final season -- Hall even says so!

    by johnny smith

He's recently commented on how he doesn't know how that rumor got started. Whatever...just hope they can wrap it up with season 6, because they've already filmed all of season 5.

I liked the Mad Max dude...

    by nodwick

I miss "Apocalypse guy" and "future Johnny." I wish he hadn't tossed the cane away. As for "taking liberties," that ship sailed a loooooooong time ago with the ep that showed why the series was deviating from the novel. The opportunity for Johnny to do the sniper routine has passed.

    I agree with Nodwick.

    by johnny smith

The chucking of the cane was stupid, and my body's natural reaction to that was to nearly break my TV. I miss Christopher Wey.

DZ may continue beyond Season 5

    by kazamasmokers

Pillar2 and AMH are working to keep the show going, though if it's without Bruce, Gene Purdy, and the Bannermans I wonder if it would be worth it.

Has David Cronenberg meanwhile seen it ?

    by derlanghaarige

In an interview he once said that he is not interested in a DZ-Remake, like Kubrick wasn't for a Shining-Remake. But I think that the TV-Show has brought some great new aspects into the story (Like DirtyRatBastrad said)

    Stillson's Girl

    by johnnyramone

Senator Greg Stillson's lady is played by none other than 'Dead Like Me' and 'The Faculty's' Laura Harris (who incidentally played Sean Patrick Flanery's (Stillson) girlfriend in 1997's 'Suicide Kings', also featuring original 'Dead Zone' movie's Johnny Smith, Christopher Walken. Laura appeared in only two episodes last season, and only one this season. She's got another possible series on ABC this Fall or Midseason with Steven Bochco's latest "Hollis & Rae" and the movies "Severance" and "Ted's MBA". Needless to say, I'm still pissed about the Dead Like Me cancellation, as Laura was terrific as Grim Reaper Daisy Adair. Hey, Showtime, how 'bout a DLM cable movie? The show was the only thing I enjoyed about Showtime. Anyhoo, I operate the longest-running Laura Harris website (7 years old as of May 3rd), so check it out at: http://www.angelfire.com/mn/lauraharris/index.html. You want copies of Laura's movies or series work, drop me a line. Later.

    Herc's first sentence and mattw

    by zacdilone

Herc...are you bitching with that "taking liberties" comment, or just stating a fact? It's hard to tell. And mattw--from now on when I read a post from you I will always think of Andy Rooney- a commentary devoid of any real thought that needs to be ignored.

My comment wasn't a commentary and not intended to spark a thoughtful political debate (Notice how it starts with "I always think of...", not "Here's a fact..."). It's just what pops into my mind when I see the president and/or think about The Dead Zone. Do me a favor and find someone else to play with.

Walken is brilliant, Cronenberg's direction is tight, and it's one of the best Stephen King movies ever made.

    mattw's George Bush comment

    by jorson2

I knew someone was going to say something like that -- it's why I don't watch that show (which may not be a very valid reason since just about everything else on TV is liberally-inclined to some extent). I just love it when liberals make broad statements vilifying Bush or other Republicans but don't include anything to back it up. Like each and every Michael Moore film, it just goes to show how paranoid and desperate that side of the political fence has become, regardless of whether or not Bush is a good or even halfway tolerable President. Yeah, their luck may change this election season and they may just take a majority in the House and Senate after so many corruption investigations, but only because it's slim pickings for voters nowadays to begin with. It's not a matter of who is right or wrong, who is truthful or who is lying -- it's whose wrong actions and lies will cause the least damage.

    by mattw

Jorson, I used an anecdotal story to describe an OPINION (notice the use of the words "I" and "think" in my post). There is no proof to back up my post, as there was nothing factual stated. Please scroll up and reread it. I'm sorry you feel the need to defend your political leanings in a Dead Zone talkback, but I'm guessing no one here cares (I at least KNEW no one cared when I posted mine).
