Updated: Why The Trailer Is Available At Odd Times!!! TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING Trailer hits online!

Published at:  Jun 06, 2006 3:35:52 PM CDT

Hey folks - Harry here... the 10pm to 4am thing isn't "a stupid marketing ploy." Actually - it's all New Line can do. You see, the MPAA rated this trailer GREEN BAND - which means it can be shown in front of all films. Well... that's true, except because the MPAA feels that maybe this trailer is too intense - that they issued special instructions to New Line telling them that they could only show this trailer before R-rated films (even though the green band means it can play in front of all films) and that it could not play on the internet... at all. Apparently - New Line went back to them asking that they please be allowed to play this trailer online - and they reached an agreement that it play only from 10pm to 4am. Cuz kids don't stay up late during Summer Nights. Apparently - the MPAA realized that this green band trailer was actually for an R-rated film. So they've decided to further penalize a film that falls within their own rating system and then hit them with a narrow margin of accessibility to their audience of ADULTS and kids that their parents can choose whether or not to take their kids to see this film... SO - is this the first step to the MPAA banning R-rated material... which of course they're not doing, they're "merely and advisory board." but this is a babystep in the direction of making R-rated films unable to compete fairly in the marketplace and forcing studios to make financially sound decisions to castrate films that were designed, conceived, but unable to reach a majority of adults' eyes. I don't know about you, but frankly this pisses me off something fierce. A policy like this can only lead to self-censorship and the neutering of cinema.

Hey folks, Harry here... Ok - you'll really have to pay attention if you want to see this trailer right now. IF - if you have the latest iTunes - go to the Movie Trailer area of the iTunes store... go down to the genre selection for trailers and select HORROR. And right there at the top of the display is THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING trailer... Now - if you haven't got iTUNES - then go to This Page at Apple's Trailer Site, but do take note. Apparently - for some weird as hell reason - the trailer can only be viewed there between 10pm and 4am.... though it doesn't specify time zone. So that is probably going to be a fount of aggravation.

Is the trailer worth a look? Absolutely. It's a damn creepy trailer. Look forward to checking this one out. Sorry to say though... you don't get to see me getting my head sawed off. I know... it's been a dream of yours for a long time. Maybe the next film.

I commend the people that put the trailer together for actually coming right out and advertising their shitty stink.

And it looks EXACTLY like the trailer to the remake....minus the The Mortal Coil song. Which was the only good thing about that entire remakes history.

    R. Lee Ermy rocks, but...

    by prague23

Well, since R. Lee Ermey is in it, a far cry from his origin, in my filmography, from the outstanding role in "Full Metal Jacket,..." and since I have removed my heart from those classics that are not being raped by the capitalist, no vision hacks that are remaking those classics that scared me shitless when I saw them at my friend's house ('cuz my parents were strict..) and considering that Dennis Hopper made the 2nd movie for me, which I still find as a late night classic, but not because it takes itself seriouslly (like this one seems to...:( I'll maybe catch this if someone I know rents it and I don't have to pay for it, but seriouslly, the nice cinemtography this trailer shows hints at the lameness that was the remake,... honestly, how does that 'full moon' follow everyone thorugh the woods like that, as if there's a 20K light just behind those trees??? If you make films, you know what I'm talking about and know that this one is going to suck and not in a funny way... Sadly, I see my great films being remade and now I have to smear from my mind Nicholas Cage whenever I watch the original and great "Wicker Man.." You know, we can stop this, by simply not seeing this, and any other film that tries to ruin an original idea... but then again, I'll start buying that "Star Wars" TV show as soon as it is actually created and released on DVD prob, so I guess my high horse needs a little choppin, if I do say so myself...

    by doctor_sin

Leatherface's dad owns a hardware store and is strafed by a rogue Nazi plane. The dad uses a nail gun to bring down the plane, which crashes and kills Leatherface's mom. The dad has a kid hold the nailgun and we are shown he will grow up to be the killer in The Nail Gun Massacre. Leatherface chainsaws his own father, blaming him for mom's death. One of the cops on the scene gets sick and goes home. His daughter will grow up to be Clarisse from Silence of the Lambs. Leatherface goes into hiding and finally emerges during his brother's school prom and kills everyone. One of the kids at the prom has a younger brother who becomes the killer in Prom Night. Anakin builds 3PO, some chick has a period, a car comes to life, and that "Ringu" girl gets drowned in a well half a world away. The end.

There's lots of unanswered questions - where are the parents of the evil siblings from those movies? Did the grandparents of the kids from the first film not know they were living next door to a houseful of evil rednecks? What made these people cannibals in the first place? But no, we get a prequel to the not so hot remake. Ah well.

I still don't understand the pedestal...

    by childe roland

...the original TCM is set upon by horror fans (does this behavior date back to those two clowns in Summer School with an already aging Mark Harmon and a pre-pudgy Kirstie Alley?). It was a fairly low budget slasher flick with choppy editing, some piss poor performances and a downright pedestrian plot. In fact, if you're going to be true to form as a geek complaining about faithfulness to source material, TCM gets EVERYTHING wrong in translating the story of Ed Gein. Do I still watch it whenever I get a chance? Sure. But it's not sacred, by any stretch. And the remake was entertaining in its own right. Compared to the shot-for-shot Psycho remake, it was downright ingenious. You keep asking for original horror films, yet how many of those have there really been? 80% of what passes for modern horror (including TCM) have all been riffs on Blood Feast, right down to the aforementioned bad acting and sloppy editing. I'm not saying every film should be remade (like the Psycho remake, it seems the new Omen flick that opened today was wholly unnecessary and had nothing new or interesting to offer on the subject of demonic children), but if a director has what he considers a relatively fresh take on a story or a character, he or she should be allowed to give it a go. If we didn't have remakes, we'd never have gotten Carpenter's The Thing (representative of the other 20% of modern horror cinema, which is derivative in its own way). Relax boys. No one's going to burn your original TCM dvds. And you don't have to watch this movie. I liked where they took Leatherface in the remake, though, so I'll give this a shot.

If you search Halloween on Netflix, a movie called Halloween 9, supposedly made in 2005, pops up, starring Heather Bowen and directed by Tommy Jarvis. What the hell is this? Childe - I agree but...

    by lilogre

Nothing should ever be sacred to the degree that some hold things to - even TCM (nice SUMMER SCHOOL reference), but why pick on the PSYCHO remake? I think Van Sant was trying a legitimate experiment with the remake and not just trying to cash in - although Universal and Imagine probably were - and though it failed it was still interesting, at least to me. I still enjoy watching it for Christopher Doyle's fantastic cinematography. By your same rationale, no one will burn those original PSYCHO DVD's. And I'm pretty sure that PSYCHO remake will gain some kind of perverted cult status - especially if Vince Vaughn's career continues to skyrocket.

I was too specific in my example, I suppose...

    by childe roland

...LilOgre. Personally, I found the remake of Psycho to be a mildly interesting cinematic experiment (like an exercise from a talented student, but just an exercise with no real artistic fingerprint) but, overall, it didn't do anything for me the original hadn't. And I like Vaughan, but after seeing Perkins in the role, well, it was a tough act to follow. When I compared the TCM remake favorably to it, I wasn't trying to slam the Psycho remake so much as put the genuinely different take the TCM remake offered on a familiar story and characters into perspective. As a movie, I could've gone my whole life without seeing the Psycho remake and never felt I was missing anything. I didn't pick it as an example for any specific hateful reason of my own, though. I just know a lot of people feel it was unnecessary (and it seems a lot of folks feel the same way about the new Omen flick). So don't misinterperet my ambivalence for hate. I'm just kind of baffled that more folks aren't ambivalent to the TCM remake and the prequel it's spawned. They outright hate it, which is usually an indication that something deeper is going on than something not being someone's particular cup o'. Maybe they feel threatened by it? Like maybe they're afraid it will somehow supplant the original as the definitive version of the myth? I guess it's possible, seeing as how that's what happened with Carpenter's The Thing, but I find it unlikely given the hardcore fan base the original TCM has. I guess I'm just advocating a more chill, less hyper reactionary response to remake news until we have reason to believe the person doing the remaking is out to rape and pillage or, worse yet, just recover familiar territory.

Shonda Rhimes wrote the awful Britney movie Crossroads, but just signed a deal worth 10 million to stay on with Grey's Anatomy. And didn't Akiva Goldsman write Batman and Robin and A Beautiful Mind? Jojo's right about the nipple slippage in the trailer...movie has the same look and feel of last year;s remake...by the way I just saw Hostel last night...now that's a horror movie...no more PG-13-rated so-called horror movies...awesome gore and graphic mutilation...that and the fact that this movie teeters on soft-core porn pretty regularly makes Hostel an instant classic..those European chicks in the movie were smokin!!....

From now on whenever someone mentions a movie with a hot chick in it and the rest of us want to know if she's shown here tits in a crappy direct to video 90's movie we'll just flash "Insta-Wack?" in the subject line, nothing else needs to be said. Just like flashing the Batsignal, and our horny, nerdy brethren will answer immediately...sometimes before we even ask. ***Back to the topic at hand, well kinda. "Leatherface Begins"? *** BannedOnThe Run - Back To The Hostel already has a built in, re-tooled theme song. There was a group of white rappers in the 90's from the Bay ARea called N2Deep. They had a modest hit with the song "Back To The Hotel". I would say that I doubt anyone remembers it but this is the internet and I am always surprised that someone remembers some random obscure shit like I do but its a common occurence. Anywho the song had a catchy little saxophone melody that most listeners of 90's rap will remember.

The marketing gimick was pretty stupid

    by veritasses

Something I'd expect to see the idiots on "The Apprentice" to think up... not that I've seen the show since the first season. There was no "cool" factor, no mention of why it's time restricted or why it should be time restricted, and the only "buzz" about the gimick is how stupid/frustrating it is, which is something you never want to do with any product. People just want to see the f-ing trailer so just show it. This marketing "strategy" guarantees that people who wanted to see the trailer won't. MBA marketing dumb asses. The 6/6/06 release date for The Omen was a marketing gimick that at least made sense, got people talking about the movie, didn't inconvenience the public and didn't get people thinking how stupid the marketing guys are. It's just too bad it was tied to a bad movie.

    by darth thoth

In the direction of a more authoritative and controlled society. We see it in government. We see it in sports. In the press. Harry, did you hear that from the MPAA or New Line?

    by veritasses

That line of reasoning about the 10 to 4 airing doesn't make sense at all. Not one bit. Esp since the trailer isn't even that "intense" AND it has the green band showing that it's "approved for ALL AUDIENCES" (their use of all caps, not mine) as clear as day AND it's on the f-ing internet (and not even a "family friendly" site like AOL). However, it does make sense if you got that info from New Line's Marketing group and they're just trying to cover their arses over that stupid gimick and they're trying to blame the MPAA. If it is true and it IS the MPAA coercing NewLine then sound the horns and alert the media 'cause everyone from your local politician, your typical cadre of lawyers to the news media, political talk show circuits and organizations like EFF will be ALL OVER this crock. Sounds to me though like it's New Line's cover up. I mean, what the hell is the MPAA going to do if New Line didn't follow those instructions?

Saw this tonight in LA before Omen, and obviously the crowd was 99% morons because the Little Man trailer went over huge. But it was even sadder/funnier that they watched the whole Chainsaw trailer, which to me seemed mostly like scenes from the first movie, then finally realized what it was only when the damn title appeared, where a chorus of "oh snap (or shit)!" and the like echoed thru the theater. THIS is whats causing the death of cinema. People don't want to go and be annoyed for 2 hrs by morons on their cell phones and under 17 kids sneaking in with their newborns. Thank god for the Arclight (which was sold out, hence having to go to a lesser cinema) where for the most part, the more... "outspoken" part of the population stay away because of the increased price (14 dollars). Well worth it if you ask me.

If a prequel to a reimagining of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is your art project, so be it. You can make up the loss on "unrated!" DVDs with all the stuff that mean old MPAA made you take out. But if millions of adults decide to buy their familes tickets to Ice Age 2 instead, well, boo fuckin' hoo. Yeah, I know I'll get flamed, but the studios and the MPAA deserve each other.

    by veritasses

since it would be an unprecedented action and would likely create a legal firestorm (free speech, censorship on the internet, etc) if true. It's completely illogical esp since the trailer has the green screen stamp of approval for all audiences. It's probably more an issue of New Line marketing making this whole thing up to cover their ass for coming up with an incredibly stupid gimick that resulted in people who actually want to see the trailer not being able to. If it IS true then the MPAA is trying to set a new standard and this needs to be challenged. Alert the media, the lawyers, the politicians and the free speech non-profit orgs. If the whole story is made up then someone at New Line needs to get canned.

Eh, it looks very much like the remake. Might be enjoyable...but certainly not groundbreaking or memorable.
Liked a few things from the remake..(Leatherface's design for one)
Speaking of ol' Bubba Sawyer...OPPS SORRY.. mean Thomas Hewlitt (HUH?) Andrew Bryniarski plays Leatherface again and this is the first time that an actor has essayed the role twice. All other Leatherfaces have been a one shot deal. (Gunnar Hansen, Bill Johnson, Robert Jacks, R.A. Mihailoff)
Seems petty but look what playing a well established slasher character more than once did for Kane Hodder.
(It got him left out of Freddy vs. Jason!)
Hang in there Andrew...with both ARMS!
