and end the story in THREE seasons which at the pace DEADWOOD moves he could probably do just by editing out the word cocksucker...but, of course, that would be WRONG. Better to let us all spend a year watching a series that'll never be finished.

    Deadwood question

    by nalapou

Okay, I've always heard that Deadwood is a good show, so I currently have the first 2 seasons and was about to start viewing them when I heard last week that Deadwood is ending prematurely.

Except it still has a season ahead of itself, so why can't they just end it properly? Is it cause it's stupid cable and they've already shot all the episodes? Was it structured to be a four year show? I don't understand. Someone please just tell me if I should bother wasting my time because I hate starting something that doesn't get a fair sendoff (See Twin Peaks, Lois and Clark, Invasion, Reunion, Push Nevada). Any input would be appreciated.

yes, it will end with the town burning to the ground

    by toe jam

a fire pretty much destroyed the entire town in 1879. if i recall correctly, the first season took play in 1876 and the second in 1877, so it makes sense that the fire of 1879 would be the closing chapter for the series. it's also pretty easy to find the fates of many of the "deadwood" characters, though i don't imagine those ends will appear in the show.

4 hours sucks, but its better than the nothing that we were going to get as of a week ago. Besides, with Deadwood (which I do love) not airing any more full seasons after this upcoming one, maybe that means The Wire will last to its 5 season end point.

    by chorleyfm

HBO said they would only do a 4th season of Deadwood if Milch ran it but he wanted to do that Surfing show, so they said you can have haf a season if you run it and he turned it down initially. At least we can get some closure, plus it will be a complete balls to the wall relentless final 4 hours (plus with HBO shows can run over the hour mark so that will be a bonus).

The Gem Saloon burnt down in that first big fire but Swearengen re-built it. Then it burned down again. After that he left Deadwood for good. I hope they give us a more dramatic end to the finest TV character since Homer Simpson, circa season 4-6.

    by eriamjh

Yep, that's how Swearagen goes out in real history... no photographs of the man exist. But a 4-hour wrap up? (That's like the cheapness of the Farscape miniseries after cancellation.) Since each Deadwood 12-episode season seems to take place in the timelines of a couple of months (if not weeks!) during hot, muddy summers, I was really hoping to see season 3 or 4 take place only in winter. Imagine being snowbound during a Black Hills blizzard: in the Gem with Al and Dan; shut up in a mineshaft with Seth and Alma "doing it"; stuck at Doc's with Calamity Jane and one issue of the Black Hills Pioneer; or stuck in an opium den with only Mister Wu to talk to... that would get the cocksucking, titlicking Hoopleheads hollering for a 9 cent fuck Jewel. LET'S HOPE SEASON 3 KICKS ARSE... all other HBO shows suck cock by choice.

    by mr nice gaius

This better be true and they better make up their HBO minds. From what I understand, Milch was very much involved in trying to get everyone signed on for a 4th season. But the "process" went beyond the deadline which required an all-stop on negotiations. (Something to do with HBO and salaries during the offseason, I think.) Milch was very disappointed because he's already got the 4th season outlined. Apparently, there is a Deadwood petition site that has been making an effort to make sure the show doesn't get cancelled in a way that won't allow proper closure. There were even rumors of it getting picked up by another network. But, if 4 more episodes are brought in and the show is allow to go out in style, I say, "Make it happen, cocksuckers. And pussy is half off the next 15 minutes!".

    by mr. profit

They apparently wanted to tie up the series after season 3 with a Deadwood movie (Apparently learning from the Carnivale backlash) but Deadwood's creator nixed the idea because he's too busy with another show. So don't blame the network this time, blame the people behind the show. I believe this info was on Tvguide.com.

    by fiester

Sopranos is done and only eight more until there are no more. They groomed Big Love, which is very watchable, but it still will never be a destination show. That leaves Deadwood as the biggest draw they have left. So why cancel it? They need to get cracking and roll out some new programing.

At least if I can believe the people who say it isn't. They didn't have to cancel it just because Milch was busy. First Carnivale, now this. At the end of this season, I'm cancelling. This is what happens when a pay network decides to cater to the hoopleheads. They lose those few who are actually paying for your stupid services. And I've had HBO my entire life (well since about 8). Nice going fuckwads!

    Mr. Profit

    by scrivener

According to Daily Variety there a few reasons Deadwood is getting is axe. Both HBO and show-creator Milch always intended a 4-season run (just as Knauf and HBO always intended a 3-season Carnivale). However, HBO was uncomfortable with Milch's other endeavors, since that could jeapordize the quality of a fourth season of Deadwood. Furthermore, considering the combined costs of HBOs other mega-expensive shows (Rome, Sopranos, Big Love), something had to get the axe. Deadwood was targetted because of their concerns over Milch's involvement. Still, if they had to cancel a show (or put it on indefinate hold) they have a shitton of other shows that nobody cares about. Big Love, Entourage, The Wire - get rid of those. They do nothing for television. Shit, Sopranoes should have been over 3 seasons ago. Why are they even doing one more? Bah. After Carnivale, and this (and the fact that they are doing another season of Rome - which could never possibly live up to Season 1) I HBO runs themselves into the ground. They definately need to start replacing some executives.

And Knauf turned it down on the grounds that it was a six season arc and he can't wrap it up in 2-4 hours. With Sopranos ending for good next year and Deadwood nearing death, I hate HBO. If Louis CK's show isn't good I'm done with this whole thing.

    Death blow for HBO?

    by supertoyslast

With The Sopranos and Deadwood ending surely a lot of people will not bother to renew their subscriptions after those shows have gone? Not the end of HBO, but it looks like it won't be the powerhouse it once was. Unless they surprise us again. With the track record they've had over the past ten years it would be foolish to write them off. Deadwood has just started showing on Sky Three in the UK (after a showing on Sky One) and I feel foolish after the first few episodes for not realising that each episode took place over a single day. And if a full fourth season was dropped because of Milch doing another pilot for HBO, why didn't he drop the surf noir pilot, do the fourth season of Deadwood and then do the pilot afterwards? He must care more about getting this surf noir thing started than ending Deadwood properly.

If a show with two seasons under its belt...

    by childe roland

...and a third about to air can't find closure after that in four hours, that show was never going to find closure. I would have killed and eaten every actor in the cast of Deadwood for Carnivale to get four episodes to wrap things up after season two, but that's never going to happen. If Deadwood needs a template for wrapping up a show on an accelerated timetable, I hate to say it (because it fuels the already largely undeserved ego on this guy) they should look at how Whedon handled the last season of Angel. That show went out with style at the top of its game and left folks wanting more without leaving them dissatisfied (unlike a certain cinematic space exploit from not too long ago).

every week the story changes, so don't assume that it will be the third season and two two-hour movies. by next week, "deadwood" could have a fourth season. just wait until an official announcement, which will likely come in the next couple weeks, right after the viewership ratings (i.e., verdict) come in. good ratings will convince hbo to give "deadwood" a fourth season, i think. also ... they'll never film winter scenes for "deadwood." the shoot in california, i believe, in an area where it doesn't snow.

I don't care about wrapping this one up...

    by _maltheus_

I just want to see more of it. Deadwood isn't the kind of show that needs a big wrap-up (unlike say a Carnivale). So I don't care about any four-hour crumbs. The show has gotten me into Westerns, but it's so rich that it's spoiled me against any cheesy 60s Westerns. What does that leave us after Deadwood? Brokeback Mountain? Come on! Oh, but there are a million fuckin' cop / doctor / lawyer shows on TV, I guess they'll let me watch those. If Milch is busy surfing, then get someone else to do it. If you blew all your budget on Rome (great show, but it won't last beyond second season), think how much money you're gonna lose by pissing off your subscribers. You aren't a network where I might tune back in some day. Once I cancel, I won't ever bring myself to resubscribing. With DVD's I'm sure they're losing subscribers who only subscribe due to movies. Now they're alienating the TV show customers. Pretty soon, HBO will have dug itself a hole that they won't ever be able to dig out of. What a fuckin' shame! They lost their balls just like Tony Soprano!

With most people either renting movies or buying DVDs,HBO's future will be ever more reliant on special events and series. However it seems they're either pulling shows before their time(Deadwood)or indulging shows that are well past their prime(Sopranos).Part of the blame for the Deadwood mess does now go to David Milch. After being quoted last month as saying it was all HBO's fault,he suddenly contradicts that statement and agrees to the four hour wrapup. Is he that desperate for the surfing show to be picked up?I'm still cancelling HBO after this third Deadwood season is over.

Ian McShane rocks. He's powerful. I heard he was pissed about the show's closing. I think he should go into creative sides. He's a real asset and seems to understand the scenes, by extension the show best of all. I hope he doesn't leave the show being used to giving over the top performances in order to convey huge, complex and subtle story points; he'll go from scene stealer to -ry chewer. The guy is strong and it shows and there's so little as complicated or as intricate as Deadwood. I hope to God he doesn't overact, but part of me says that's the only thing he knows how to do. We'll see
