Cool News
The monster from the Korean Horror Film, THE HOST is revealed, and boy is it effin' weird as a chipmunk typing!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Hey folks, Harry here with some really really cool footage that I found a link to over at KFCcinema.com for Joon-ho Bong's follow up film to his award winning brilliant film, MEMORIES OF MURDER. This one called, THE HOST... and it's a Korean Monster Movie with Digital Effects work by The Orphanage who worked on DAY AFTER TOMORROW, SKY CAPTAIN, HELLBOY and HERO. The word from Cannes is that while it wasn't in competition, it was better than almost all films in competition and is on par with work like, "JAWS" - I shit you not. Well, I am dying to see this film which has been picked up for U.S. distribution by MAGNOLIA PICTURES - and clicked on this link. You'll see some footage from the Korean trailers that have been incorporated into some interview segments with Joon-ho Bong. My fiancee tells me that he's basically just talking about how he didn't know how he was going to visualize the creature for THE HOST, as Korea doesn't have the type of Visual Effects house necessary to create this type of creature, so they just began storyboarding, then found THE ORPHANAGE, whom they did their pre-vis and final visual effects work with. See, sometime Yoko comes in handy. Heh. Here's the first images of creature online... Looks bizarre as fuck.

Yep, I'm pathetic!
-
Cool, but that just looks like any other cgi giant lizard.
-
Let me guess the wedding date. June 6th, right? I repent, Lord, I repent!!!
-
This is new. Asians running away from CGI. This looks interesting. Can't wait.
-
...really, Harry - you NEED to get a hobby.
-
What the hell Harry? It took you six sentences to mention you have a girlfriend (well, I guess fiancee now) this time. You're slipping, man. Back in your glory days, you were able to wedge it uncomfortably in the first or second sentence.
-
Is odd. But what's even stranger is
SNAKES ON A MOTHERFUCKING PLANE's TEASER IS ONLINE! Check digg.com.
Some of that Host footage is great while other shots looked not so great. Maybe something was lost in the translation and some of it was animatics. I think I heard that word once. But the movie looks like great fun! The one thing it lacks? Say it with me... snakes and a plane.
-
That's all I thought about while that director was talking.
-
That was a wierd coincidence that you said "lost in translation" in your post, since I didn't read it before posting mine. Cue Twilight Zone music.
-
Wild. Suntory!LOL!
-
You may or may not know this Harry, but this is an entertainment site, it's a place where we talk about films, comics, and TV shows. People don't come here to hear about the girl you stick your penis into. I now know that she's a 20 year old korean girl (which creeps me out because I am a 20 year old korean male and thinking about a korean girl my age being crushed by a large Texan with orange hair creeps me the fuck out) who is now your fiancee. I know you are a fat lonely film geek and for someone like you to find a nice young pretty (asian) girl to be with is really good. But, please Harry, this is not your personal blog. Most of us don't care. Post that shit on myspace.
-
look at the dog! What a chump.
-
Is he somehow under the impression that Yoko Ono was cool in anyway?
-
I think he's under the impression that he's really cool, like The Beatles, and he's John Lennon so people will think his fiance is like Yoko Ono, and will worry that "Yoko" will break-up or do damage to "The Beatles" (The Beatles, in this case, being Ain't It Harry News).
-
is she?
-
and this doesnt have to be JAWS to already look better than anything coming out in the US this year alone. Looks great and I for one will be seeing it in the theater or as a DVD, depending on if it gets a theater run out here in Bumfuck,Egypt.
-
Its more of a giant tadpoole/carp hybrid with an iguana tail. Freaky.
-
Harry has always added personal facts and experiences in all of his posts and reviews, SINCE THIS SITE STARTED! It's what makes it different from the hundreds of other movie review sites and so-called "accredited" reviewers. Nice job Harry! Ok, I'm off to go find my own 20-year-old Korean chick.
-
She's 19. And I mentioned her, as she translated the Korean for me to give on to all of you. Topaz is right, I've always brought my personal life into things here. As for the "Yoko" - a talkbacker called her "Yoko" in a talkback on an article of Moriarty's where they were discussing the fact that I was the "missing Beatle" since I wasn't writing as much as I used to, and that she was "Yoko" and would be responsible for the break-up of AICN's top 4 of Me, Mori, Quint and Herc. So, because she and I laughed like crazed people at the thought of her being Yoko Ono, we decided to just run with the joke as her nom de site.
-
Hell if Harry can get a Fiance. Theres hope for us all. Congratulations on getting married harry!!!!
But.. I agree that it is a little creepy being 19 an all. But who am I to judge!! Love has no barriers lol. -
I respect the decision to take the monster out into the open in the city - something I've longed for an Alien film to do. But that monster looks ropeadopey. Really. I think monster design is all about looking like a plausable evolution. That just looked totally random. Not quite species2 bad but still...
-
The little E.T. iguana from the show Surface. The Orphanage must have worked on this on their lunch hours, they've done a lot better. I wish I could see what WETA would have done with this same concept! BTW Harry, can we get a photo? It will surely inspire sad sacks like myself.
-
Congratulations! That cool news put a big grin on this hater's stone visage this morning. Now lose some weight, ya big lug.
-
You guys wank off too much.
-
Seriously, aren't there like hundreds of articles on this site that have a harry knowles intro consisting of him drooling over male leads?
-
. . . and check out Gong Li's rack.
-
...but I posted this on my site like two weeks ago. Oh, and this DOES look old-school, fun, and it's supposed to be quite scary. Can't wait.
-
Freaky, me likey. But anyone knows you need a bigger gun than that to kill that creature. Or a sword. Or a really big axe. Yeah, chop that fucker up but good!
-
...and I'm in Korea. But it'll be in friggin' Korean! I know a good chunk, but I'm not up to unsubbed movie-watching level, unless the dialogue is mostly just the Korean equivalent of "Fuck" ("Shibpal" -- listen for it next time you watch Oldboy). Personally, if a crazy tadpole lizard climbed out of the Han river and started grabbing schoolgirls with its tail, that would be my #1 word of the day.
The real question for me is: do I go and see it anyway? I really don't like the idea of watching a movie dialogue-free (though I made the exception with Tom Yum Goong). But I also don't like the idea of waiting for DVD. I kinda suspect there will be significance to the dialogue, what with it coming from the fellow behind Memories of Murder. Maybe I can master the language in the next 2 months... -
Ok first of all i was fuckin' surprised when Harry mentioned his "fiancee" so congrats Harry for your engagement! And seriously, is she, as a Korean, ok with it, that she has a nickname which sounds pretty Japanese?! Because i can ensure you "Yoko" is definitely Japanese and certainly not a name which you find in Korea or in Korean names.
To Beageal: There was an old review of "Tae-Guk-Ki" here on AICN which was written by a "Non-Korean"(I don't know if he/she was American so i'm just calling the reviewer Non-Korean) and he wrote that he saw that film in a theater where they show Korean movies with English subtitles! It must be somewhere in Seoul so if you are around of Seoul you should try to track this down! -
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS FLICK! I'm following every news about this one on twitchfilm.net and it really sounds great and hey, it's from the director of "Memories of Murder" so i have high hopes on this one.
-
...as they DID work on this. And Creature Workshop handled the animatronics, so it's not all CG. There's slimy analog monster action in this sucker as well. Don't know why that didn't warrant a mention here of all places. I cite the following: http://tinyurl.com/mshnk

...missed the first look (as far as I know) of Chow Yun Fat as Pirate Sao Feng from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN III on the very same page he linked above: http://tinyurl.com/p7k5l

Hope you didn't pay too much for your fiancee Harry, she's going to be gone in six months with half your possessions.
-
THAT'S lurking? I think that mighh more accurately be described as 'lumbering heavily' or perhaps 'charging madly'. But not lurking. And it's still a better title than 'The Host'. Who are we? It's guests? Or maybe it nests inside us. Perhaps 'it lurks inside you' for a while before is bursts out weighing twenty tons and starts chasing people around Seoul.

Now, then - if AICN starts covering AACHI AND SSIPAK
by harry weinstein
I will be truly impressed. It's a Korean animated film that seems styled more after the likes of INVADER ZIM and even a bit of BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD, if they were trapped in a balls-out action movie that's a cross between EQUILIBRIUM and the hugely disappointing WONDERFUL DAYS - which gets mocked a bit in the trailer. There's a still from this that seems to be riffing on FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. What it's definitely not, is more of the same normal anime style. Allow me to do the TRAILER GUY voice. In a WORLD... powered by HUMAN SHIT... TWO MEN... and a MYSTERIOUS WOMAN... must SWEAR A WHOLE LOT... and SHOOT a BUNCH OF PEOPLE... This thing's rated 18 in Korea, and I fully expect it will be pretty offensive. It fucking well better be. http://tinyurl.com/mr3n3

Apparently the military makes a cover story up that the creature is the "host" of some sort of rare disease and must be quarantined, to cover up the fact that they created it themselves by being careless with toxic waste. Or something to that effect. The Korean title translates simply into MONSTER - obviously, for English-speaking territories that title is taken already.
-
Best to you.

Attacking Harry for daring to mention he has a girlfriend on his site, and attacking him for his weight is really juvenile and quite petty. I am fine with Harry's personal interjections. Im not always fine with his taste in movies - but his long reviews - filled as they always are with references to obscure movies and to his personal life - is what this site *is*. Its HIS site. Those reviews are his vision FOR this site. He has many competitors for your eyeballs and yet this site has huge traffic, so his non-corporate, warm, "we're all humans and kinda a big disfunctional family of normal geeks" approach appears to be working for him and for most of us. If you dont like it, the Ebert and Roeper website is just one google search away. As for your personal racism against "white texans" being with asian girls...and your other needless cruelty towards him (you know, the entrepreneur who makes this website and this community happen)...you are beneath contempt. You should be ashamed of yourself. Take a moment to reflect, man up, and apologise.
-
It's horrible. Very forgettable. Sort of the monster from The Relic mixed with some of the low budget "SciFi Original" movie creatures. A great monster movie deserves a memorable/distinct image. Maybe it's used creatively though. I guess I'll watch.
-
Congrats on the fiance news. Ain't It Cool News indeed. So, am I invited? Seriously, I would come. I dont drink so I would be cheap.

i dont speak korean and i could tell what he was sayin
by s0nicdeathmonkey
-g! seriously! can she ACTUALLY speak korean? or is she just faking. because about half his words in that were english-esque and that combined with his hand movements made what we was saying fairly obviously.
-
WORKING ON DIGITAL EFFECTS SOFTWARE! Heh. (thank you, that is all.)
-
You can get Creature Workshop, The Orphanage, AND Weta for 4.9 Mil? Shit, let's make a movie!

amd so on... -
Jabbering about special effects in his native tongue. This monster seems to enjoy eating Korean schoolgirls...just like Harry.
-
screwing the dweji heendoongee? Duhruhwoon Yangalbo Nyun...
-
You forgot the rimshot -boomTISH!
-
I find it funny people still criticize Harry for his style - anyone who's been a regular to AICN knows Harry fills his reviews with anecdotes, personal history and uncomfortably graphic sexual imagery - if you want a more "professional" (and boring) review, there are plenty of sites where someone will give you the latest of their regurgitated film school pretensions - I for one come here because of the passion for films and geekdom demonstrated by Harry, Mori, Quint and the rest - that's AICN, dude - accept it or go read the NY Times.
-
Seriously - I hope you and Yoko have a very happy and enduring marriage.

You know, it's all about presence. You have these people who keep making monsters who have no clue about how animals walk, fly or act. I just can't take this monster seriously because of the way it walks. If it was dragging itself along the ground, leaving a big rut as it went... then yeah, that makes sense. But the silly duck walk? C'mon guys. The tail grab was stupid too. Amphybians don't use their tails like that -ever. If it was a tentacle along its body, then that would work. Things like this piss me off. The more I see crap like this... the more I'm considering actually going into the business just to stop these abominations. ...oh, and congradulations Harry.
-
- stop considering and you'll be a mile ahead of 99% of the jokers here. Although you'll find that it all goes out the window when the director says, "No. THIS is what I want." You really think performance or design are left to the 'experts'?! To be fair, if the effects people are left to their own differing opinions, it can end up being a dog's breakfast. At least with a director or production designer the vision is consistent (good or bad).

I recall posting to this talkback when the article FRIST showed up. What happened?
