GHOST RIDER kicks it into gear with two trailers in HD!

Published at:  May 23, 2006 4:22:09 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I've read two drafts of GHOST RIDER... the one that is going to be in theaters next year and then the script by David Goyer, his very best script he ever wrote btw. Now I know, that sounds like I'm about to rag on Mr DAREDEVIL, but I'm not. His script had some things that I've wanted to see my entire life... namely the old west version of the GHOST RIDER and in the trailers that popped out of the Apple world today... there's a shot that literally gets that little boy that played with EVIL KNEIVAL toys and pretended they were Johnny Blaze toys. I've been a GHOST RIDER fan ever since MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #5 and in all that time I've never once cared for the writing... to me GHOST RIDER was an illustrated character. Something for the covers, something for the panels. The best written the character has ever been is in these two scripts... and the more purely fantastical version is the one we're getting. David Goyer's version was the pure horror take. Flesh burning from the bone, an agonizing transformation, a tormented soul... an angry furious spirit of vengeance that seared the flesh of sinner's souls to deliver them to Mephisto. I liked that Hard R take... but I also like the fantasy version of the character that we're getting. This one, my nephew is going to freak out after. "Flaming Zombie Biker" he'll say. Actually, he'll say GHOST RIDER... he's edumacated. Here's one more reason to check out X3 on Friday...

Oh wait... uhh... make that eighth. Anyhoo, both teasers looked pretty good. I mean they don't show a whole lot, but what they did show was solid, at least. Sam Elliot looks cool in costume, the effects are surprisingly good. I'm still not convinced that the villains aren't cheesy "ghouls" though.

    by skycrapper

Why does he have skeleton hands? He would look so much tougher with the spiked gloves like in the comics and I wish they would have gone with the later style of Motorcycle, it's so much more menacing than a souped up Harley. Still, that shot of him riding up the building looks pretty cool...

That trailer was pretty bad. I sure do hope those effects are only about 10% done, because they looked really nasty. I'm usually very supportive of comic book movies, and it's very hard to get me to *not* look forward to a movie, but Ghost Rider has just done that. I can't put my finger on what it is, but I couldn't possibly be less excited about this movie. I really, really hope they prove me wrong.

After watching the trailer, I was looking at the logo and thought it looked weak. The font should be bold and heavy-looking. This one has "intern design" written all over it. Most comic book movies at least get the dang LOGO right. Yeesh! I'm getting so jaded in my old age.

But leave it to Mark Steven Johnson to go all Daredevil on it. Like most modern action directors, he has this strange way of shooting action in the lamest of angles. Don't forget rubbery CGI and squeaky clean looking filmstock (A pg-13 staple!) This should look more like the crow or blade 2 than fantastic four, but maybe that's just me.

Ghost Rider. Along with preproduction on ten more characters. What's the deal with Warner Bros? They own DC comics outright. They're movie production team for developing their superheroes into feature films is a bysmal compared to marvel. At the rate they're going, Marvel will likely release films for Capt. America, Silver Surfer, IronMan, and the SubMariner (let alone a few sequels to already launched franchises e.g. Spidey 3, next year) before we get another Batman or Supers flick. Certainly all of the above listed character's films will be released before we get a Wonderwoman, Flash, Green Latern, or Aquaman film

If you guys think you can do that much better a job, then you should be out moving and shaking and making it happen. This looks like a perfectly good take on the character, the effects look decent if not flawless, and it looks like good fun. Now if they could only add a scene where Ghost Rider is riding up the side of the World Trade Center, it'd be the perfect summer popcorn movie. Except that it's coming out in February. Second Tier Heroes

    by kevinwillis.net

I dunno, but I always dug Ghost Rider a whole lot more than Moon Knight, or heroes for hire. Although I don't really see Ant Man as a movie, either. Ghost Rider always seemed very cinematic. Although, on the DC side of things, Deadman always seemed very cinematic, and they haven't come up with a Deadman flick yet. Still, Ghostrider is a little higher on the second tier than Moon Knight. What about Cloak and Dagger? At least there could be a scantily clad hot chick with white hair in that movie.

Guys c'mon. Has no one ever actually set a skull on fire except me? The skull turns black fast. He would have look much more menacing if the skull would have been black or blackened surrounded by flames. I also think the bike is too flashy. The horse that death rides (horsemen of the apocalypse) is pale and starving. The bike should be a rusted burned husk. Other than those personal preferences... I am sold. I will definitely see this movie. I have no idea what the storyline is because I've never read this comic. By the way, the coolest angel of death was in Baron Munchausen. Best Ever.

    by kevinwillis.net

I read Moon Knight early on, from origin to late 80s, then stopped. I've read maybe 5 comic books in the past 15 years. But, given thought, I'd definitely take Moon Knight over Ant Man. But Ghost Rider looks cool. I'm looking forward to it. I've seen the worst two comic book movies made recently--that would be Daredevil and Elektra--and they weren't that painful. Like watching an episode of some show on the Sci-Fi network. I might feel differently had I paid money at the thater, but . . . I'm looking forward to X3 and Ghostrider. And both trailers are pretty good (but it's hard to make a good trailer: The Devil Wears Prada trailer is the perfect trailer, but it would hard to do something like that for popcorn flicks X3 and GR. Not impossible to do a perfect trailer for such flicks, just hard).

    by zeke25:17

That makes "Freddy and Jason--place your bets!" sound like Shakespeare; good that at least one teaser dropped the line. Having said that, there are some TERRIFIC images in these trailers, and Cage looks like he's having fun in a movie for the first time in years. The voice of Sam (Beef, it's whats for DINNER) Elliot can make anything sound impressive; the man's got one of the deepest white man voices this side of Lance Henriksen. And Eva Mendes looks hhhhHOT! BUT...I do hope they do a little work on that skull head; right now it looks like one of those masks you can buy at Wal Mart or something. The quick flashes of it are much better than the full-on look at the end...too tame, I guess I'd say. Let's horrify it up a bit! For that matter, why WASN'T Goyer's original script used; and who exactly tweaked the one we're getting?

"C" List Hero gets "C" Grade CGI Treatment

    by 1gazza

With special effects/CGI being the driving force behind getting the superhero bandwagon authentically moving, I have been having a ball.Until now.

The quality seems to be fading as the studios get slightly more careless and/or care-free with these adaptations. The lower down the Hero Icon Chain, the worse the treatment.

I am indifferent to Ghostrider, but after a promising bone-crunching Kneivel style smash, the title characters CG effects are not up to much. I can only assume that with such as long time to go before release the movie is going to have the effects upgraded(like King Kong-but on the cheap!)

The movie world needs to realise that CGI cannot convince on its own- unless the budget is immense on a par to LOTR, Kong, Supes Returns etc. Particularly when you have a bike tearing up the side of a building- stupid beyond words!

The final shot of the Ghost rider and his chain looks like a below par animated film link from a game console we often see between levels! Not a great way to entice people to see a film.

Somewhere. Also, I put FF and Daredevil and Elektra in the same category--watchable, not abysmally horrible, no where near what could have been done with the material (but when is that ever true)? Of course, I liked FF well enough because my expectations were so very, very low. Probably the same reason I liked Catwoman. I'd heard so many awful things about it, that it was such a steaming turd of a film, that when I saw it I was all, "That's not nearly as bad as I thought it was." Yeah, the new Moon Knight stuff looks really cool. But it would be even better if he rode on a shimmering white Moon Cycle, and said "By the Great God Khonshu, let's ride!" before transforming.

For crying out loud, it's a guy dressed in leather and chains with a flaming skull riding on a flaming motorcyle. It's Ghost Rider all right and it looks pretty damn good to me. Fuck, what the hell are some of you expecting? I'm sure the comic fans out there will eat it up...the younger film goers will find it "cool"...and it'll probably do all right. I think as an overall creative property and film package, this one could have some legs at the box office. And since it's not supposed to be fucking Shakespeare, I'm sure those looking to simply have a good time with it will have a good time. That is, those who aren't MORE interested in being armchair quarterbacks -- I mean directors -- who think they know more about moviemaking, special effects, CGI technology, comics history or overall storytelling than anyone else in the world. Sheesh, I really am getting old. There was a time when I was a kid and we would just be BEGGING for movies like there are of late to satisfy our genre interests. SUPERMAN RETURNS looks fine, this looks fine, and all the whiny fucks who just love to tear down at things for the sake of tearing down -- or who think they can judge how an entire movie is going to be based on a freakin' trailer -- need to just throttle down their hate and just chill. Or as I said in the SR talkback, follow this tip: Just don't go to the fucking movie. You can sit at home alone and be a moaning, sad sack bitch...meanwhile the rest of us will be tossing down some popcorn and having fun.

You seem literate enough to capitalise the beginning of your sentences and include apostrophes where appropriate but you baffle me, sir. What the heck does "sho'nuff'" entail? I think "GAWD" means "God" based on the preceding "blessed holy touch" however wouldn't the apparently deliberate misspelling of His name offend Him and cast negative light on you, his wondering disciple? There's a lot of growing up to be done in this I think. Ridiculous, glodene. If that is your real name, I sincerely doubt it.

I miss that gag on this site. Oh yeah, shut the fuck up about Daredevil already! It was a 90% perfect translation from the Frank Miller origin story. Much more accurate that most of comic movies that are worshipped on this site. Affleck loved Daredevil comics as did Mark Steven Johnson. The unrated Director's Cut is a HARD R movie for those of you allowed to see those types of films. I hold it next to The Crow as far as adult fantasy/comic movies go. Flame away bitches!

    by jollydwarf

Someone is going see this, and then call in that farce George Noory on "Coast-to-Coast AM", tell him they saw a flaming-skulled demon riding a chopper on the Interstate, and in his very clueless, obviously disinterested way, he's going to 'believe' them, right before shilling some gussied-up AM radio/8-track player that doubles as a smoke detector to lonely, dumpy middle-aged women with scraggly raven hair, twelve cats (each adopted under a different Zodiac sign), and the entire Stevie Nicks LP collection. No, that "someone" will NOT be me.

    by dick testicle

And this trailer does it justice, that's why a lot of people are digging on it. A flaming skull and a flaming motorcycle are never going to look 'real.' It's a fantasy idea in the first place. It's like saying 'That Orc looks fake!' It's a stupid, bullshit thing to complain about. Check out Superhero Hype if you're curious about Ghost Rider or any other comic. They are the hard core fans and they love this. Yes, it's easy to slam a movie like this, but I think it's very faithful and it's going to be HUGE.

    Speaking Seriously, seriously...

    by jollydwarf

...that's why it's being released in February. Because that's where ALL the movies that "no one" wants go to minimize their loss for the studio. Beyond that, I have to imagine this movie getting openly mocked in the theaters, and the only people that won't be laughing will be the three 'necks in each showing not-so-discreetly getting blown by their knocked-up 'baby's mama' (or low self-esteem Sheetz cashier chick). I'm not one to nitpick CGI, but this currently looks a flaming chain link above direct-to-DVD caliber work. More importantly, it just looks fuckin' stupid, and I don't know how Ghost Rider on the big screen CAN'T. Plus, it positively REEKS of Nic Cage's inner-geek vanity project. Oh well, there's always Eva. No CG needed there, knowwhatimsayin, knowwhatimsayin??

    Watched it again and.....

    by doom ii

...the f/x for this character seem WAY more complicated to pull of than even Spider-Man. You have a character in the air a lot, but also a motorcycle and fire as well. Maybe the studio will like what they see and dump more money into it before the release date. How many more dudes will get a Ghost Rider tattoo after seeing this? How many will buy a motorcycle? This could be a minor pop-culture phenomenon if done correctly. I personally think BOTH Spider-Man films were "ok" at best, so my taste obviously differs from many on this site who worshipped those movies. The Ghost Rider cast looks great! No Tobey McGuire or Kirsten Dunst anywhere in that trailer! Hurrah!

...Not great, but I didn't really expect it to be. It looks very nice visually and since this film is 8 months away I'm sure a lot will be done on the SFX. I remember comparing the explosion top shot on the highway (death of the twins) from Matrix Reloaded in the very first teaser to the final trailer and then the final shot in the film and you see how much FX change over time. As long as the filmmakers know they're making something cheesy and run with it this film should be good fun. Also I dig Nicolas Cage, he rarely disappoints me.

    Now I remember...

    by docpazuzu

...why I despise comic nerds more than trekkies. What we have here, by the look of the trailers, is a comic book adaptation with exactly the right measure of cheese factor X for a comic of Ghost Rider's stature, i. e. a solid, lower middle class property. Not only that, but Ghost Rider looks to be -- at least visually -- the most faithfully adapted superhero so far. For a normal comic fan or Ghost Rider fan, this would be more than enough. So what do we get? Well, apart from the reflex-o-haters who think they sound clever by saying that a burning skeleton on a motorcycle "looks ridiculous," we get the most odious of fantards -- the ones who feel that their own particular third tier hero who helped them get through puberty deserves nothing less than the royal treatment. You know, the ones who say they'll boycott a Jack Of Hearts film if it doesn't star George Clooney, isn't directed by Spielberg for 300 million dollars, and doesn't have the combined talents of both ILM and Weta behind it. I don't even want to get into the CGI crybabies. Or moviemack.

    by regicidal_maniac

I was very impressed with how this looked. Ghost Rider is another one of those character that I was never that attached to, like F4 and I really enjoyed that film so this looks like it'll be loads of fun. Batman Begins sucked, Superman Returns will suck, Punisher looked awful, Hulk was very cool in the moments when it wasn't a bit long and boring, Blade was okay, Blade II was amazing, Blade Trinity was only fun when Ryan Reynolds was onscreen backtalking Parker Posey, I haven't seen Daredevil or the X-Men films, Spiderman 1 & 2 were pretty damned good except for the fact that his costume looked like it was made by the costume department except by a kid, Batman Forever was fun, Batman was great, Batman Returns was okay, Batman & Robin is so bad it's almost hilarious but not quite, Rocketeer was pretty cool, The Shadow was so very good it's almost a "how to" for how to balance the lements of comic book adaptation, that and Superman The Movie and Superman III are just about my favourite superhero films overall, Superman II is spotty and Superman IV has so many problems that I feel a bit sorry for it and just want to give it a hug while shooting it in the head. The abolute best Superhero films are the animated ones Mask of the Phantasm, Last Son Of Krypton, World's Finest, Batman Beyond and Retur Of The Joker are so good it's just unfair to any other interpretations. Rant over. In short Ghost Rider looks like it'll be lots of fun.

I have to say that I've been concerned about a GHOST RIDER movie with Nick Cage. (Haven't been a fan of his since RAISING ARIZONA.) But that image looks fantastic. I love Ghost Rider. It was one of the very first comic series that I ever collected. That, Man-Thing, The Thing, Spider-man, The Hulk and any horror comics I could get my hands on. I guess you could say I had a thing about tortured souls. I never thought I'd ever see a Ghost Rider movie. A) I didn't think it was that popular a comic book. (I seemed to be the only one purchasing them. Even with them getting re-released and made over in the late 80s, early nineties.) And B) I just didn't think any of it was filmable. The whole thing is so outlandish and chaotic. When you try to explain the story to a friend, it just sounds ridiculous, and downright silly in parts. I guess we'll see. And I'm still concerned about Nicolas Cage.

Seriously, I've never been a big fan of Ghost Rider and Nic Cage often gets under my skin in that irritating way, so this isn't necessarily the Comic Book Movie of the Century for me. But that said, I have been looking forward to it since I enjoyed Daredevil and dig the idea of Wes Bentley and Peter Fonda as the baddies. But after watching that teaser, all I can think is, well, how can this movie not suck? I know the digital effects crew has many more months to clean up the effects and make all the flame stuff look as good as possible, but this is the big teaser for the movie. This is essentially everyone's first real look at the flaming skull in action (unless you count that split-second clip from, what was it, Comic-Con a while back?). The animators and co. were clearly tasked to get these effects shots up to par so they could be included in the teaser. If they weren't ready, then they should have delayed the unveiling of the teaser. Because right now, the flame effects look fucking awful. I know fire is one of the toughest things to animate with CGI, but seriously, this is a little ridiculous. That big money shot at the end of Ghost Rider on his bike launching himself off the side of the building's wall with his chain flapping around is very cool in theory, but in its current form of execution, it looks like a glorified animatic. I dunno... can't say I'm much looking forward to this one anymore.

They could have doused Nick's head with gasoline and gotten at least one good take! Stupid fucks. It looks just like the comic. The Ghost Rider looks fantastic.

...with 9months to further enhance the F/X & CGI this movie looks to rock. He should have the leather gloves though, but thats a minor issue.
This is a great role for Nicholas Cage and he'll likely need a hit after Lord of War underperformed, Weatherman got washed out and I predict his World Trade Center movie will do poorly. Nicholas Cage is going to need Ghost Rider to kick ass, and it looks like its going to.

It's ridiculous. It's almost cartoony. It's a flaming skeleton who rides a motorcycle. What else do you expect!? This is just going to be great popcorn fun. As long as it takes itself seriously. I actually like the scene at the end of the international, when he jumps on the motorcycle and flame on! That will look even better in 9 months.

    by iron pills

Haha, exactly what I say! It's like The Hulk all over again. How realistic can a 12 foot tall green man look. By the way, I thought the effects in the Hulk were good. And let's remember, this movie comes out in February, plenty of time to really give the effects polish. I see some really cool ideas in that trailer, give it time. This could work... And Eva Mendes is hoooooottttttt!!!!

There is no way that Nicolas Cage will be anything close to good in this movie... He should stick to good movies.

Definitely won't be seeing this one.

    Fall into two categories...
    1) Those with incredibly good taste who think "Eraserhead" goes for the cheap thrills. ....And 2) Those who own Steven Spielberg's "Hook" in three formats. ....I'm willing to accept that any of you individually may fall into the first category but that begs the question of what you are doing on this of all sites, let alone a talkback.

    by redeye2000

An amazing trailer! this is what fans want to see. kick ass action! no fooking romance! real drama! i dont care if CGI looks real or not real. that aint the point. are comics real??? it is about if you get the feeling right. and so far it does that! it is just a shame this movie is out in february. i am sure if they continue like this this movie will do awesome at the 2007 summer box office. This movie is all what superman returns is not. a Real COMIC to Movie adaption! and so far me loves it. that bike jumping of the roof of that building is awesome. cage getting on fire and changing into ghostrider awesome too. i only would like it more if the skull look a little bit meaner. so it would look more bad ass. but anyway. so far awesome work! whoever work on it. keep up the good work! me as comic fan is really excited in this work

Allow Me To Explain The Comic

    by captdanielroe

Ghost Rider is a carnie comic. It was never supposed to be a big comic. It was somewhat an outgrowth of Jim Shooter who in the seventies and early eighties used Marvel to push a nihilisitc, aetheistic outlook. In that universe when any person died, good or bad, it was just a matter of which demon got to claim and fricasse the immortal soul. Dark, dark, dark. They even had Damion Hellstrom, a superhero named "The Son Of Satan" with a burning pentagram on his bare chest. Oh sure that's no Evil Ernie but still, at the time... Well anyway, Ghost Rider is a demon named Zarathos that is not good, but is obsessed with imparting punishment. And periodically he possesses the carnie stuntman who entered into this compact to save the life of his "stepfather"... Who in true carnie fashion was the father of his girlfriend. The stories for Ghost Rider were not Spider-Man like. These were dark, twisted tales, like old EC horror comics on steroids. ...Let me stress it wasn't a "good" comic much of the time, so much as it was an awesome comic. .....And the riding up the buildings thing was in the originals by the way.

Dude, it's a movie based on a comicbook. If you have a hard time suspending belief or have utter disdain for fantasy/SCI-FI, this ain't the thread for you...So when Merchant/Ivory release another sleep-inducing (I'm trolling for Oscar consideration) flick and this Harry & Co-horts decide to cover it, then by all means wow us with your superiority complex.

    awesome maquette!

    by el borak

i would never buy it but it looks cool. for people complaining about things like the flame and the skull being wrong, it's called HELLFIRE. it's a mystical fire from hell. it doesn't act like normal fire, so it doesn't burn the skull. i know it burns away the outer man but that is also symbolic of the rider burning his way out and the person always comes back unburned and unharmed. therefore a white skull is correct. I do remember a bit of that because in a moment of delirium I patiently took Ringy through the basics of so-called 'realism' both in cinematography and design, explaining how 'real' effects like lipstick spots, milk in rain, sound synced to lightning flashes and so-on were just as 'fake' as any CG. Also how the colour and design of the dinos and vistas in Kong were purposely designed that way for dramatic, visual and emotional purposes (Jimmy still sucked arse though)._____________Yes it was stupid of me to try and I think I went away and just tried to block the whole thing from my mind.____________P.S. I'm pwned by Eva's Ass.

    by samsquanch

and... I can't believe Ghost Rider is actually getting made. It was a trash book for hash-addicted metalheads in the eighties. Here we are, 25 years later, watching it on the silver screen. I guess that means there's hope. Groo the Wanderer, anyone?
