7 Days infomercial :-(

Published at:  Oct 20, 1998 5:52:52 PM CDT

Glen here…

This just got sent in. From a good source, and a cool guy. Not sure why he seems so surprised by UPN dropping the ball on promoting SEVEN DAYS. I mean, after all - these *are* the same folks who greenlighted MERCY POINT, and actually had the where-with-all to air THE SECRET DIARY OF DESMOND PFEIFFER. Out of such sensibilities, how could anything hopeful loom on the horizon?

Here’s the message. You judge for yourself.

Here's an interesting bit for you re: all the Mercy Point shot going on
in the talkback.

UPN is buying infomercial spots promoting 7 Days. The 30 minute promo
was produced for the launch of the show. It's hosted by Julie Moran
(who is truly awful) and has interviews with supposed science experts,
etc.

This promo will do NOTHING to help this show. It's really, really bad.
As for Mercy Point - it got the can for the same reason "Nowhere Man"
did: it was produced outside of Paramount. "7 Days" is a Paramount
show, hence the effort to save it. Mercy Point, being Sony, was pretty
much fucked from word go.

Word on the grapevine is that a lot of
producers are getting really pissed with UPN's obvious favoritism
towards it's own shows and don't want to make anything for the network.
Just take a look at what it's had to choose from. The quality of shows
being offered to them is really going down the tubes. When ABC
announced "Soul Man" was going to be cancelled UPN jumped on the show.
Akroyd actually QUIT to goddamn thing rather than have it go to UPN.

Glen here, again. Anyone out there see 7 DAYS last week? How ‘bout that miracle cure they pull out of their butts at the last minute?

Deus ex machina.

Must be nice to have such convenient lapses in structure when one has written themselves into a corner. "Oh, the hero has the plague he just saved the world from? Well - here’s the only vial of trial antidote we just happened to have on-hand, but hadn’t mentioned until the last two minutes!"

Yeesh.

    Half a chance

    by the doctor

I admit, I was sorely disappointed with the ending to last weeks episode. I also admit that the teaser for this weeks could go both ways. UPN hasn't had the best of luck with it's own properties (the weekly Voyager bashing sesion I have with friends is evidence of that) but I have to say that 7 Days is an improvement and a definite move to the positive.
Sure, they pulled a big rabbit out of their hats at the end of the show, but I found the whole show up to that point amazing and better than most of the things I had seen for a long while. 7 Days can be really really good. Give them half a chance, ignore the crap that Paramount tries to pull around the show and maybe, just maybe, they will see the gold they have in their hands and not blow it.

Or, more bluntly, Yea, UPN sucks, but don't let that color how you feel for 7 Days.

Glen here...Your sentiment is correct. I don't agree that I would characterize the rest of last week's episode as "amazing", but I do agree that it was full of potential. Some of it was met, some of it wasn't. But you're correct. Judge 7 DAYS on its own merits, not because of its unfortunate domocile.**Glen**

    Infomercial -- Nothing new + 7Days

    by lb4747

I saw an infomercial for "JAG" on CNBC back before "JAG" premiered on NBC a few years back, also hosted by Julie Moran. Since, "JAG" is another Paramount show, I'm thinking this may not be so
unusual for them to be doing.

About "7 Days," I liked last week's episode right up until the magic cure at the end. The way they had Parker finish the mission only about 2/3 of the way through the episode had me intrigued at what they might be doing with the rest of the show. And when Parker became sick, I was surprised and excited -- I had no idea how they'd try and get him out of that situation. I was hoping they might let him die, and have his "double" from that timeline continue on, or maybe have someone else go back 7 days...but when they showed up with the vaccine, I was really let down.

Personally, I still think the show has a lot of potential, and I'll stick with it. But I don't think I'd be able to swallow another one of those easy fix endings.

    Duplicates

    by don

Is it my imagination or is there a duplicate every time he "Steps Back" If that is the case then won't there be 5 duplicates if he goes back 5 time. 10 for 10, ect does anyone have a problem with this. I'm a firm believer in the willing suspension of disbelief but if they don't address it at all it will really start to bother me.

    7 Days Rocked...

    by rich

I have been watching 7 days and even though the whole timeline is a little whacked the show itself is getting better. I know I'll keep watching..

    RE:Duplicates

    by lb4747

I believe the issue was addressed in the premiere: when he arrived back, his double was "missing" from the hospital. But that's all that was said. Presumably, they want to keep the issue as nebulous as possible.

    Nowhere Man ....

    by taxman_10m

I loved Nowhere man and never missed an ep. Too bad UPN killed it. It was a much better show then 7 Days, Voyager, and all the other UPN shows combined. And in a lot of ways I found it to be an equal to X-files.

Does any station play Nowhere Man eps anymore?

    Duplicates

    by brahma1

Thinking too long about the ramifications of time travel almost always gives me a headache, so hopefully the point I'm about to make is simple enough that I can make it through without too much aspirin. If the guy goes back in time 7 days, then there is a double up until the point where he completes his mission. Once that happens, and since it happens in the past, there is no longer any reason for him to step back, and he ends up having never gone. Perfect for plausible deniability if you ask me, because if he does his job, there won't be any proof of the mission. Or maybe I'm just crazy. I haven't seen the show so I can't comment on this "miracle cure" thing, I was just talking about time travel in general. Which is at its most basic level impossible. Forget about being able to exceed the speed of light, "time" is not a force like gravity, nor energy like light. It's a measuring device, invented by humans to coordinate their activities and make life simpler, much like the inch. There are representations of inches everywhere (rulers, tape measures, etc.) but has anyone actually seen an inch? Of course not. Because there's no such thing. By the same token, time travel is impossible simply because there is no past. What's happened has happened, and that's it. There is a "future" (in other words, life will continue), but it hasn't happened yet, and since time doesn't exist as a physical force that we can counteract, we just have to wait till it gets here. All these scientists that are trying to find ways to beat the specter of time are swinging at shadows, fighting an opponent that isn't there. Sure, eventually I'd say we'll be able to go faster than the speed of light. But will "time" slowdown around the traveller as Einstein theorized? Will the person travel into a future where everyone has aged but him? I say yes and no. I'm no rocket scientist so I'll agreee that a person travelling at speeds exceeding that of light may very well go into a state of suspended animation. And when they decelerate, could conceiveably end up a few years ahead of when they left. BUT did he go forward in time? Did he travel to the future? The only answer I can think of is no. He simply took himself out of the loop and let the future come to him. For example, let's say you're at a football game and it's the first quarter. You leave to go see a movie and come back in the fourth quarter. Did you travel to the fourth quarter? No, you just went somewhere else and waited for the fourth quarter to roll around by itself. Man my head hurts.

    Nowhere Man

    by severen

I too really enjoyed the show Nowhere Man and was disappointed by it's cancellation after only one season. To me it has been the only quality show that has come out of UPN since UPN started up, still at least it had some kind of closure with it's final episode, unlike most shows that get dropped after one season. As for Seven Days I cant say that I have been overly impressed, it seems to be going the way of Sliders and other such shows that started out with an interesting concept but soon dropped it in favour of lowest common denominator entertainment. Maybe it'll get better but personally I just can't see it happening.

    taking care of multiple bodies

    by calhoun

I just had an idea. Now I've only seen 7 days last week. It's on right now and I'm not watching it to tell you how much I enjoyed it, but as far as having lots of the main character around because of his time travel, here's an idea. This is a government agency right? I bet as soon as a new one of those guys show up they just kill the one that is already there. That would take care of having more than one of the main character around, right?

    the 2nd and 3rd eps ...

    by taxman_10m

The 2nd ep blew hard in my opinion. Another huge disaster, he goes back in time and saves the world. Tons of plot holes and just lousy plot all together (not even counting the duplicate problem). I'm glad I didn't stop watching the show completely after the 2nd ep (which I considered doing).

The 3rd ep was wonderful. Humor and time travel is a great combo. I just hope the next ep is as good as the third, and that they fired whoever made the 2nd.
