Midseason Heats Up with New Drama Hidden Palms From Producer Kevin Williamson
May 18, 2006 (New York, New York) - The CW Network unveiled the schedule for its premiere 2006-2007 season today at Madison Square Garden before more than 3,000 advertisers, affiliates and national media. The announcement was made by Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment, The CW.
With the launch of The CW, we have an unprecedented programming advantage, said Ms. Ostroff. By bringing together established hit series with innovative new shows, we were able to create a stellar schedule for our premiere season. Putting this lineup together was a programmers dream with so many choices and so many passionate fans making their voices heard about the shows they love. We will launch in the fall with hit shows on all six nights, giving our affiliates a strong foundation to succeed from day one. The CW will be the destination network for viewers 18-34, and we will deliver quality, diverse programming that advertisers and viewers will embrace in a major way.
With a strong commitment to diversity, The CW will schedule two original hours of urban comedies on Sunday night. The returning series begin at 7:00 p.m. with EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS, the most acclaimed new show last season, from executive producers Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi. At 7:30 p.m., ALL OF US, from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, is coming off an impressive season, and will be followed at 8:00 p.m. by GIRLFRIENDS, which has been the most-watched show by African Americans since it debuted in 2000. The new comedy, THE GAME, from GIRLFRIENDS producers Mara Brock-Akil and Kelsey Grammer takes a comedic behind-the-scenes look at the lives of the wives and girlfriends of the star athletes on an NFL team. The series stars Aldis Hodge, Coby Bell, Tia Mowry, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson. The 9:00-10:00 p.m. hour will top off the evening with an encore presentation of AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL.
Additionally, the four comedies will repeat on Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m., giving the network four hours of programming starring African-Americans on the most-watched night of the week.
Televisions longest-running family drama, 7TH HEAVEN, will return for an unprecedented eleventh season in its familiar Monday night timeslot. Due to the overwhelming outcry from fans and the fact that the series ratings were up in key demos last season, 7TH HEAVEN is the perfect platform to launch the new drama RUNAWAY, from executive producer Darren Star. Starring Donnie Wahlberg and Leslie Hope, along with newcomers Dustin Milligan, Sarah Ramos and Nathan Gamble, RUNAWAY focuses on a family on the run from the law until the father can prove he was framed for the murder of a co-worker. Living under assumed identities, the family has to stick together under extreme conditions in order to survive.
Tuesday nights are all about girl power with the return of the award-winning series GILMORE GIRLS, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, at 8:00 p.m., followed by another critical favorite, VERONICA MARS, starring Kristen Bell, at 9:00 p.m. These highly compatible series will each bring new viewers to the Tuesday lineup.
On Wednesday night, AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL will return in its highly successful 8:00 p.m. timeslot. This super-hit from supermodel Tyra Banks will air two cycles each season, alternating with one cycle of another hit reality show, BEAUTY AND THE GEEK, from producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg. Returning drama ONE TREE HILL will continue to build on its already loyal young fan base on Wednesday night.
Thursday night turns on the testosterone with the pairing of two action-packed dramas, SMALLVILLE, starring Tom Welling as the young Clark Kent, and SUPERNATURAL, starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Both series showed extreme compatibility after being paired together the second half of last season, with SUPERNATURAL retaining more than 90% of the SMALLVILLE lead-in in key demographics.

Oh Lawsy! Sunday gon' be Negro Night on da CW! I can hardly wait!
-
Snap!
-
Oh wait..I don't give a shit.
-
...continues to name ASP as an Executive Producer. An oversight, or part of her old contract?
-
Like the book
-
Just out of curiosity, why don't these programmers call their non-urban (other than white) schedule, Suburban night?
-
...You cannot marry a woman without gills.... And apparently officially won't make it onto the air in the fall either.
-
to kill 7th heaven once and for all? Someone stick a stake in it!
-
...that pairing Veronica Mars with Gilmore Girls is not that great of an idea? Not terrible...I don't mean that. But there was all this talk of pairing them together when they're really completely different shows with completely different tones. I don't know, it just doesn't seem like all those girls (plus the couple of the AICN writers) who tune in for witty repartee between girls worried about serialized-sitcom problems will bother watching a much more plot-heavy multi-mystery show. I would put it after Smallville in a minute if they didn't have the better-rated Supernatural to nurture. I don't know; could be wrong. It just feels a little off to me.
-
7th Heaven did, Dawn Ostroff admitted it today check out Ausiello report on tvguide.com for the interview
PS Runaway is a GOOD show ive seen it -
the pairing is brilliant because its about quality and not genre/subject matter, which is how and a lot of other people watch shows. Just because I like Gilmore Girls doesn't mean I like any other crappy girly family shows, such as lets say, Beautiful People. Networks should pair shows according to quality more often.
-
Why don't they just call it "Fried Chicken N' Watermelons Night".
-
That makes me laugh. The only show I watch in that block is Everybody Hates Chris and I just consider that a comedy. Black people in America watch Girlfriends? Why oh why?! Somebody take away their Nielsen boxes/surveys and give them to black people with good taste in quality TV. What is the point of Ethic-Niche programming? Oh, we need shows that focus and represent us. OK, that's fair, but why are all the black-centred shows comedies? Coz African-Americans are good at sport, music and funny! Oh please. How about some more black orientated dramas/teen shows/genre shows/proceedurals/sci-fi TV shows? Better idea how about we forget all this niche programming and just make more shows which feature/centre on a ethnically-diverse (and non-stereotypical) range of characters. If not? Oh well, just my thoughts. P.S. If Sunday is African-American night, when is Latin-American night and Asian-American night? :P
-
Fuck you Cowardly Wussies your new weblet sucks shit. Gough & Millar should take Aquaman to ABC or CBS where it will be a hit on Friday night guaranteed. Do it guys tell the CW to drop dead.
-
and dumped the rest of those unfunny comedies.
-
Ok, just kidding. Seriously though, it gets good ratings and has a bigger proven audience than any other show on CW's lineup. Makes complete sense that they'd bring it back. Like the TV Guide interview said, 7th Heaven can draw people to the network for an evening while Everwood couldn't. And there really isn't anything else quite like 7th Heaven on TV right now, while Everwood was one out of numerous teen dramdey clones.
-
I hope this show pays off big time for UPN/CW. They certainly have given it more than FOX would have.
-
So he hates Everwood..but wants to go out into the sea with his man, In green and yello tights..Interesting Zeed..Dont need to say anymore on that point of view for you...
By the way..I'll take my 3 WOMEN on "Birds of prey"..least they had a show aquaboy(By the way I.D.G.A.S. either)....now go play with the fish...runalong...
And thanks to the one or other two people who still stick up for birds of prey...glad I have them on DVD....
And Everwood...RIP...
Cheers people.... -
Seriously, that show had a SERIES FINALE, and the fucking morons at the CW. Took the ratings for the series finale as being REGULAR 7TH HEAVEN ratings, and decided to pick that piece of shit show up for another show. It out lasted Buffy. It out lasted Angel. Now it has out lasted Everwood. This fucking show's inability to die--really fucking pisses me off. When, on more markets, this show does not pull even close to a 7, and Gilmore Girls and Smallville and VM put it to fucking shame. Well, Dawn, you reap what you soe. When Runaway fails. I guess you got what was coming to you. Fucking 7th Heaven. I fucking hate you as if you were a huge fucking special kind of asshole.
-
There is nothing SITCOM about the problems on Gilmore Girls. Much like Veronica Mars, the characters on GG are dealing with regular ol'human problems without the laugh track. So, on the REALNESS, of the show--these shows fit together rather well. Also, there are countless fans of both shows, that love them equally. Now, like VOLTRON, they will combine, to kick ass and take some names. On a Tuesday nigh at the end of the year...not crowded with Idol.
-
Ten bucks says the Rader family gets a new name before the series debuts... This sounds like the great indie drama RUNNING ON EMPTY from the 1980s, one of River Phoenix's best performances and a phenomenal pairing of Judd Hirsch and Christine Lahti as his radicals-on-the-run parents. Worth digging up from Netflix sometime if you're looking for a smart, engaging family drama with a twist...
-
Cause they dealt with, you know, ISSUES. But without being all cheezy about it.
-
TV Guide's Matt Roush, that is, in his letter-answering column this morning going verbally postal on the CW's retention of 7th Heaven and One Tree Hill, yet cancelling Everwood: "This sucks in so many ways. This is one of the baldest, bleakest instances of the TV business rearing its ugly head. It is not about creativity and quality, that's for sure, not on this poor excuse for a cobbled-together network. 7th Heaven is corny treacle, One Tree Hill is pandering teen trash. Everwood transcended genre more often than not, and told its moving stories with humor and a touch of grace. (I'll miss the Abbotts
-
but I have a feeling that its cancellation was a compromise. Dawn Ostroff is strong supporter of Veronica Mars so Everwood might have the collateral damage to keep Mars on air.
-
...cancellation (we all hate to see our favorite programs end); but, Everwood was hardly the great show everyone's suddenly trying to make it out as. At it's best, Everwood was a slightly hip version of Picket Fences, with a trendier cast and pumped up teenage angst. Nothing more, and equally pretentious.
-
Where in the heck did you get that idea zathras34?
-
Since when is "urban" a bad word? Besides, UPN was nicknamed "Urban Persons Network" years ago. (No, I know that's not what it really is, but it's not like this is so shocking.)
-
Is that a rhetorical question? If not then i suggest that you rent Whitemans' Burden and re-think that post.
-
Put me in the camp that feels that this is NOT a good combination (even if the press release referred to them as "compatible". Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of both shows, I just agree with FreakeMovie that they don't work well together. Yes they are both quality shows, Freake has a valid point that they are of two very different styles and narrative tone. VM is MUCH darker than GG will ever be. Didn't anyone else get this impression for the last feww weeks of the season when UPN moved VM to air after the WB's GG on Tuesdays. I usually taped VM to watch later because I wasn't prepared to dive into Neptune's weird criminal goodness right after watching the delightful Star's Hollow lunacy.
-
Weren't there like a million commercials advertising the series finale of this shit? Come on, let's make way for shows that aren't about an undersexed preacher and his slutty kids. That's been played to death.

Lenny Nero, obviously you're retarded so let me help.
by angry mean panda
"Urban" in this sense doesn't mean "of the city" or an "urbanize area" it is code for "black people". See, by creating "urban night" they took all the shows featuring "black people" and put them on one night, which is basically the same as saying "That'll placate them colored bastards!".

Hey Herc, has this ever happened to a TV show before?
by excaliburffolkes
Where an established long-running show, like 7th Heaven, has gotten its victory lap, a season long countdown to goodbye, and a big series finale - and then come back on TV the next season? I can't think of any other shows that have done it. Seems unprecedented..
-
He has, what, 7 or 9 kids? He loves putting it to his woman
-
Just saw the the season finale to the best show on TV. Is it really the case that "Battlestar Galactica" won't be on until October?
-
For season 3 of BSG. Unfortuantely. But as much as I wanted it back by July, this is for the best, IMO. But WTF am I hearing that Sci-Fi Channel is going to carry the new ECW wrestling show?
-
...seriously. Why don't they just call it "nigger night" and get done insulting us? Will they be advertising Colt-45 and Escalades?
-
It does look pretty awful:

Oh yeah, Thanks CW for passing up on that OC meets NCIS meets Smallville bullshit. In the words of Kevin Smith: "That's the reason why my TV is mostly reserved for DVD's and Porn"!
-
It always takes me a bit to realize why I don't make too many opinionated posts here becuase of the backlash, but thank you for that. The truth is, the word "urban" is being used and not something that would truly be offensive. I'm from the bastion of American tolerance so don't think you can enlighten me by simply being insulting. The only people who truly find "urban" offensive have given power to a word that is pretty lighthearted. Would you be offended if Blue Collar Comedy Tour was called Rural Comedy Tour? Because of white people? The truth is, calling this "Urban Night" is no worse than the title Blue Collar Comedy Tour insinuates purely caucasian humor. So lay off, take a deep breath, and engage in conversation, not ad hominem attacks.
-
Have you even SEEN an Everwood episode? Heh, there you have it... I can respect your opinion whatsoever, but please don't deny the undeniable. Everwood is QUALITY TV. Period. I've been watching this series for over 4 years now via downloads and BT, and I can give you some of my USA TV shows background (remember I'm from Spain, Europe, The World): Smallville, Gilmore, The OC, Lost, Las Vegas, Friends, Ver

If ninety-nine point seven percent of TV/Hollywood productions were urban (non-white} how glib would you be?
-
"Urban" does not entirely mean "non-white." That is power you are giving the word, thereby fooling yourself into believing your own argument. I would not go out of my way as a TV exec to call anything "Urban Night," but I also think you are all overreacting. Glib or analytical? Your call.
-
Lenny Nero: My last post on this issue was quite lighthearted as you may be able to tell. The name "Urban Night" to describe black-centric comedies doesn't offend me at all. I just find it kinda funny. Like how in music stores all the Hip Hop, R'n'B, Neo-Soul and even Reggae appears in one amalgamated genre-section titled "Urban". When did "Urban" suddenly become a description for contempory Black stuff? Also Lenny in this sense, that is what is being connotated. If not, I can't think of a show that execs would label "Urban" that didn't centre on blacks and latinos, can you? People are overreacting a little bit IMO. No need to get offended over something as silly as this, just laugh about it. I guess you could say it's P.C.-Patronising. :) My main point was not the name of the evening but the fact that all these "Urban" programmes have been dumped on one evening as if to say "That'll keep them quiet". Again, I jest. Also, Everybody Hates Chris deserves better then that timeslot. Sunday 7PM? WTF! P.S. VM season 3 w00t!
-
I forgot to add a "glodene/Angry Mean Panda/etc" colon. Didn't wanna post another long post either. P.S. I'm still waiting for my Latin-American night and Asian-American night. ;)
-
You're either out of touch or you have a predilection for rationalizing bullshit or all of the above...Which is it?
-
This is how I want things. Lighthearted (at least somewhat) and none of this attack bullshit. As for you, glodene, you've failed to engage me in conversation and instead have resorted to name-calling. Great job. How about you respond to some of my posts in detail? Out of touch? Yeah, it's too bad I work in the industry we are discussing and grew up in the most tolerant area of the country. You're talking to a filthy West Coast liberal, so don't bring the out-of-touch argument. You do not know me, therefore these are ad hominem attacks, and they're a sure sign of struggle.
-
Not once have I addressed you out of your user id in my three responses. Now if you consider "out of touch" as some sort of offensive adjective, then who's guilty of giving words/phrases too much power? And if you do work in the entertainment industry and fail to see the disparity in the hiring of minorities in positions behind and in front of the camera, then you are truly working with blinders on and further substantiates my earlier charge that you are truly out of touch. This sort of supercelious attitude may explain why minority viewers have to continuosly endure the inane Urban programming/Scheduling that you well-meaning (albeit out of touch west coast liberals) call responsible entertainment.
-
"Glib," "out of touch," having "a predilection for rationalizing bullshit," etc. You SEEM have a tendency to run off at the mouth with nary a thought of your opponent, so I'll just give you a big *sigh* and let you bother somebody else. Is it so awful that I have a different opinion than you? Get over it. You have gone off on a tangent we were NOT talking about, "the disparity in the hiring of minorities in positions behind and in front of the camera," and somehow made yourself the victim. All I said was that "urban" is a word to which you are giving too much power, and have acted LIKE a 90s politically correct pandemic that disallows any sort of changes in social structure. (notice how I capitalize my qualifiers, so I have the ability to apologize later.) Nemesisdarkside had it right, you guys are taking this way too far. You'd lose in a debate competition by not using the evidence at hand and trying to steer this away from the simple argument I created. "Urban night" is no more offensive than "Blue Collar Comedy Tour," a topic that has not been addressed. But whatever. I gave up.
-
Maybe you guys would be happier over on the World Trade Center page. Exactly what's so hard to believe about the CW execs. comparing 7th Heaven to Everwood and concluding to go with the better and higher rated show? The one that's been going strong for 10 years, the one with the bigger loyal following, the one that's always been a good lead-in on Monday nights, the one that has 9 of the 10 most watched episodes in The WB network's history, the one that's unique and that has no direct competition by similar shows on other networks. It would have required a conspiracy not to pick it. While 7th Heaven has never been flashy, it has been consistently good week in and week out for all of its ten years, and is poised to continue well for at least a few seasons more. Everwood is average, and is just like all the other repetitive teen genre shows run on every other network (and it never managed decent ratings even with 7th Heaven's strong lead-in). You're outraged about the cancellation now, but by late September you'll have switched to watching another of the interchangeable teen shows and going, "Ever-what?"
-
My (Lenny) don't we have an overly self-inflated image of yourself, my clueless westcoast liberal. Not once did I consider you my oppenent. Btw your constant use of The Blue Collar Comedy Tour is nothing more than a cheap rationalization that would probably hold water if it was lumped along with HEE HAW, My Name Is Earl & Roseanne, hell, that I could respect as a (well kind of) valid argument...So how about using Seinfeld, Friends & Will & Grace as your example...I mean if you're going to play the (out of touch) objective liberal TV viewer, why not go all the way and use the holy trinity of white bastion entertainment as your trump card...Oh! And far be it for me to play the victim to a medium that so far regards minorities as nothing more than a convenient low budget loss-leader to toss in to build up a fledgling network or have we forgotten The Wayan Bros., Homeboys from Outerspace, etc.
-
Didn't I say I was done? Stop with the tangents.
