THE PREACHER... coming soon to a theater near us'

Published at:  Oct 20, 1998 12:20:31 AM CDT

Tons of us geeks just love the comic called THE PREACHER, and it looks like the script and the film is getting off the ground. This would be fairly friggin awesome if it were to get moving. As for the two allegedly up for the main dude... Hmmmmm, I'll have to sleep on it. I bet y'all have some suggestions. Well read away. Warning though, there are some SPOILERS below, so read at your own risk....

Harry I just wanted to tell you about a script I just covered, very cool,
it sounds like your cup of tea. It's called PREACHER, and it is to be
directed by Rachel Tallalay (TANK GIRL) and it is some seriously violent,
fucked-up, crazy, otherworldly type shit.

It is about a guy named Jesse (the Preacher) who is stuck being the
preacher in a bum-fuck crappy mid-Texas shithole town. (No offense Harry
of course!) Meanwhile, up in Heaven, or in the "next world" or whatever,
a Demon and an Angel get together and have sex (usually they fight, and
don't fuck) and their child is called "Genesis". Anyway, Genesis decides
to go to Earth and possess the body of a mortal man, and that combination
will create a super-powerful being. I realize this probably sounds
totally crazy, but bear with me please.

Anyway, some Angels up in heaven decide that they have to eliminate
Genesis, so they reincarnate the spirit of the most brutal, violent
killer the Old West has ever known (He's called 'THE SAINT OF KILLERS')
and send him after the Preacher. Meanwhile, after Preacher gets
possessed, he is able to speak "The Word Of God"--meaning he can tell
anyone to do whatever he wants. I.e., if he tells someone "Pull down
your pants and moon the traffic for 20 minutes", that person would have
no choice but to do it.

Then Preacher gets teamed up with his old girlfriend named TULIP, who has
just been rescued from a random gunfight by a friendly Irish guy named
CASSIDY, who incidentally turns out to be a bloodsucking vampire. Also,
Preacher is running away from his two evil stepbrothers who have been
programmed by their psychotic grandmother to ensure the fate of Preacher.

Yes this totally sounds crazy--but I'll qualify it: The movie has a
budget of $35 million, and the lead role of Preacher will be either Ben
Affleck or Johnny Depp, The "Saint of Killers" role is supposed to be for
Samuel Jackson, and the "Cassidy" friendly vampire role is already
attached to Robert Carlysle, who as you know was awesome in FULL MONTY
and TRAINSPOTTING.

This is a totally violent, nasty, fun-filled script, like FROM DUSK TILL
DAWN but with much more of a gritty, well-written, and funny edge. Not
just good guys against vampires, this is good guys against evil ghosts,
angels, demons, vampires, and screwy inbred Texans. Anyway, it is cool
and I'm sure you'll hear much about it in the future.

    bad casting

    by mystery

i'm a big fan of the preacher comic, and i have to say that those decisions for casting are totally off base. if it were up to me, i'd have either michael wincott or nic cage playing jesse, james woods as cassidy (assujming he can muster up an irish accent), and clint eastwood as the saint of killers. that last one may be pricey, but he's the only one for the job.

    Some thoughts

    by michaelb

What has Talalay done to deserve this project besides fucking up a licence like Tank Girl? Casting options mentioned for Jesse Custer's part are awful, but Robert Carlyle as Custer sounds perfect...would he become part of such a mainstream project though? I doubt it. For some reason, I thought Tulip always looked like a blonde Teri Hatcher...The script seems to follow the early comic books verbatim, and if this is so, the throwaway violence could run into problems...this is going to be one BLOODY film...*fingers crossed* ;)

    by obi-ron

Hey, Man...Im a Huge Preacher Fan, And I want to see This Movie Made Like Everyone else..But..Johnny Depp???...Im sorry, Great Actor, Just not the Person For Jesse...Im thinking, Jason Patric. Yes...He was in the Unforgivable Speed2 but man...Remember "The Lost Boys"?, "Rush"?....I mean...Hes got the look...And He can definatley look like he can Kick Some ass if he got in a bar fight...The Wizard Comic Mag., Suggested him in Their "Casting call" Section, And I think they are right,.....Now....Only if he can pull off a Southern Accent...And By the way...I personally think Micheal Bien(Terminator, Aliens) would make a coooool Cassidy...

    the whole shebang

    by zombiematt

    1) the story sounds like it follows the comic pretty damn close
    2) even though it really bombed at the theters, I liked Tank Girl. if he's gonna do another comic movie, awsome.
    3) with the exception of Cass, those are the stupidest casting choices since they picked Nick Cage to play the man of steel. am I the only one that sees the HUGE similarities between The Saint of Killers and Jack Palance? and what's with Affleck as Custer? don't get me wrong, i dig big Ben, but c'mon. what about getting a TEXAN to play good ol' boy Jesse? what's wrong with McConahay (or however you spell Matthew's last name)?
    4) if this project gets rated anything less then NC-17, the comic fans will turn on each other so we can see all the blood they're probably gonna leave out.
    5) are they thinking about franchising this? one of the GREAT things about the comic is it keeps on going. i know Garth says he's only goin' to about issue 75 cause that's how long it'll take to tell Jesse's story, but are the powers above (read: studio) going to leave us with a cliffhanger, or Jesse finding God and throwing punches till one ends and happy ending la la la?
    6) do we really want to take the risk of turning an excellent story told in a beautiful format into a silver screen extravaganza? let's do the list: Tank Girl - I think I'm the only person on the planet who thought this was a good movie, Batman franchise - first two movies are really good, the last two blow guano, Superman franchise - again, first two good, last two bad, Spider-Man - ......sorry, wishful thinking, Howard the Duck - let's pretend Mr. Lucas wasn't attached to that one, Captain America - ewwww, The Punisher - eww(did this even make it into theaters?)ww www, The Maskand then there's Blade. Blade is without a doubt the best comic book movie to come out within the nineties. Besides the mushy parts which were played up too much and the idea for the sequel (heard about that?), it was a great movie all together. but the record for the past 25 years hasn't yielded too many movies-based-on-comics worth getting the next issue about.

wow. did you really read this whole thing? you've got to much time on your hands. log off now and go pick up a copy of Preacher. go on! scoot!

    Preacher

    by verbal

If they get it right this will be a huge hit. The interpretations of heaven and hell, devils and angels in comics such as Swamp Thing, Hellblazer and Preacher have clearly "inspired" many recent movies (you know who you are)so it would be great to see justice done to the source material. I CAN see Ben Affleck as Custer, but I like the idea of Matthew McConaughey having the chance to finally live up to his hype. Then again Vince Vaughan could swing as Jesse. Robert Carlyle as Cassidy is perfect and inspired casting. And what about Harry Knowles as you-know-who?

    Not the right cast

    by chud

First of all, I love Sam Jackson but he is NOT the saint of killers.

    Tommy Lee Jones, maybe.
    Scott Glenn, maybe.

    For Jesse Custer,
I'd pick Kevin Kline, if he could get really gritty.
    If not, maybe an unknown.

Cassidy would be great with Carlisle.

A great comic would make a great movie, as long as they don't try to make it a stylish, brainless film like "The Crow".

C'mon...get a decent director, someone who knows the medium (comics & film) and someone who can tell an interesting story well.

C'mon, for fuck's sake, this Talalay woman screwed Tank Girl - why not give Kevin Smith a shot - with a script by texan writer Joe R Lansdale - if anyone can get it right, they can.

    by otter

    Wow!
This is great that they are actually going through with this. Preacher is practically the only book I read. Tallaly will do a nice job with this, and I hadn't even given Affleck a thought as far as casting, but he definitely fits, same with Carlysle; he;s perfect for Proinsias Cassidy. I didn't see Jackson as The Saint of Killers, but it could work, and he's got the acting balls to do it. Great report, guys; keep us Preacher fans updated.

Oh my God!!! I cannot belive I have not seen any Harry bashing in this talk balk yet. lovely. As for a relevant, but not particularly intelligent, comment, how's this: Joe Landsdale would be a good choice, he rules, Jonah Hex rules. But, has he written for the screen, and if he hasn't, well then you might as well also consider Garth Ennis to at least work on the story. How involved is he anyway on the development of this project? Jason Patrick sounds about right too. Love ya' Harry

    The Preacher

    by severen

Okay first up I have to say that I am a big fan of both Johnny Depp and Samuel L. Jackson...but they don't really seem (at least from where I'm sitting) to fit into their respective roles. Personally this is how I would cast things. Jesse: now this is to me the hardest part to cast, at least in basically keeping with the source material...Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Michael Biehn all spring to mind as highly capable, but all are probably a little too old (and none exactly scream out 'YES! he would be perfect' to me)...like I said it's the hardest role to cast. Nic Cage and Sean Penn both could pull it off but again the age thing...guess it all depends on the script and just how faithful things are going to be. The Saint Of Killers: my definite first choice here would be Lance Henriksen...I can really see him in the role. I think he could pull it off to perfection. Another choice that might work would be James Woods. Cassidy: I like the casting of Carlisle in this role and think he could really pull it off well, but as a back up how about Tom Sizemore or Michael Wincott. Tulip: Okay this is probably a bit left field but I could really see Kristen Cloke (Vansen from the defunct Space: Above And Beyond) in this role. Both Linda Fiorentino and Sherilyn Fenn would also (in my opinion) be worth considering here. As for director I didn't mind Tank Girl (or Freddy's Dead for that matter) but I didn't exactly love them either, and I wonder if Talalay can really hande a project as visual and stylish as this...my choice would be Kathryn Bigelow to direct it. Now she is a director with real talent. This is definitely a project with major potential...let's just hope that they don't screw this one up.

God I hope this is all one big, stupid rumor, Ben Affek? as custer? oh come on! and how could you even think of having a chick direct this flick! Mimi Diver maybe but not the broad who did that, low down, peace of shit tank girl! How can they not offer this to Sam Rami or Robert Rodriguez! how about Gullmero Del Torro or Hong Kong director Ringo Lam? Shit! were was David Fincher's name in all this? and as much as I love Sam" the Man"Jackson..Pleaze. Im not saying I wouldn't want Him in the movie just not as "HIM" hasn't anyone noticed the striking resemblance of Danny Trejo( the knife-throwning guy in the movie Desperato)in the series?

Great, just great..Once again HollyWood fucks up another great story.

    Don't worry about the casting...

    by superninja

Worry about whose going to produce this thing! If Disney or Dreamworks gets a hold of it, they'll have to o.k. it with the right-wing christian fundamentalists to make sure they won't turn off the whole south. (And before I get flames, I'm from Austin, TX). I hope a production company with balls really gets a hold of this project, because otherwise, it'll end up watered down by the major studios. Can you imagine the religious right not getting offended by a violent preacher? Not me. I can hear the Christian Coalition printing fliers already...

    answers re: director

    by tantrum

Just in case any of you wanted to know why Rachel Talalay is directing PREACHER, here's why:

    She and Garth are friends.

That's it. Garth controls all aspects of the property, he wants complete artistic control and, by working with her, the two of them can create the exact film experience they want.

Mind you, I think the movie'll suck. I think Garth's script is terrible, although many people around town seem to like it, so we'll see.

Anyway, there you have it. So if YOU want to direct a movie, just strike up a friendship with a comic writer.

    by yuri wuensch

The Saint of Killers should be played by Stone Cold Steve Austin. Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper parlayed their wrestling careers into bad movie roles, why shouldn't Austin. He's far more popular than they ever were. I actually think this would be inspired casting. He's got the southern drawl, the demeanor and presence to pull it off. I'd also laugh my ass off.

    THINK GODDAMN YOU!!!!!!!THINK!!!!!!!!

    by mr miracle

The point is, this is a movie that cannot be fucked up. That is unless you do everything in your power to go backwards as opposed to forwards. The Preacher story in and of its self is fairly original, yet borrows from so much. The characters are likeable and at least 75 to 80% of the stories are believeable. This is a studio's dream project. The budget was set at around 35 million, and by today's standards that is cheap. Truth is, it could be made for less. The only CGI that would be involved is Genesis and heaven. Genesis should only be seen at the very beginning and maybe at the end, this by the way should be iffy because who knows how this is going to end. As far as casting goes, there are a few actors who could play Jesse Custer. His range is not that dynamic, so an oscar winner is not required. I will be the first to say that I absolutely love Bruce Campbell. Hell, he is one of the most underrated actors today, unfortunately, he would make a much better Superman than a Preacher. One, this movie would be too much Ash for him, although I could be wrong. We need a Texan. McConaughey could actually work, but like I said, it doesn't much matter. Even Affleck of Patric would work. Tim Roth would make an excellent Cassady, even though Robert Carlyle will probably get it. Lance Henriksen is the poor man's Clint Eastwood (only in the looks department) so he will work great. As far as Tulip goes, she can be played by anyone with blonde hair because she is fairly plain and we have seen her type in various other places. My major concern with this picture is how or if Arseface will be portrayed. If the make-up is not right, he will be just laughable, and there could be a lot done with his character, even more than what was done with the comic. In summation, this can be a great flick, easy money if done right. The movie should be simple and effective with the emphasis being on the story.

    Cruise as Arseface - hahahhahha

    by hunter

Gotta agree with that Cruise comment - but I think that Matt Damon looks more the part and it is a new Hollywood requirement that he be in every movie. Like Carsyle for Cass, but how 'bout Ed Norton?? For Jesse I can't see Affleck - too pretty boy, and if you've read even a page of Ennis' Preacher, there are no pretty boys. Sounds like a decent script , but can they really get you to hate Jody, TC and Granma? And can the put a man fucking a chicken on the silver screen? Anyway, the Saint is white, so unless Sam has some work done, I don't see that casting genius. Anyway, how about Lance Henrikson as the Saint - seems obvious to me - if you saw Raimi's Quick and the Dead, you got the saint (looks anyway, if not character)

    Casting Crimes

    by anton_siirus

My God you people are American. Robert Carlyle is SCOTTISH, f'God sakes. Cassidy is an IRISH vampire. Jesus. The fact that the idea of casting him is still the best of the bunch frightens me. Samuel L? Ben Affleck? Even Patricia, much as I love her dearly, just does not look or fit the part. Whoever thought those up need to die the way Sheriff Root did. And Rachel Talalalalalalalay? How is she still employable? This one promises to be the most painful desecration of a comic yet. Of course, in my perfect universe, the casting would be Tim Roth as Jesse and Gary Oldman as Cassidy, with Cameron Diaz as Tulip, Lee Marvin as the Saint and a horribly-disfigured Chris O'Donnell as Arseface, having refused all offers of plastic surgery after wrapping his car around a tree.

CK- nice call on Lee Marvin. I was still typing when you posted-great minds think alike. As for the Harrys, Schumacher gets my vote for director (an obvious choice perhaps); anything Pacino's done in the last 15 years as best actor/worst performance (I suppose Scent of a Woman gets the nod just 'cause of the Oscar); and Jessica Lange in Hush for best actress/worst performance.

    please God no

    by spookykabuki

Preacher is one of the most engaging and satisfying tales I have ever encountered - not to mention cool as fuck-all - it was virtually created for the screen, but bringing it to life will be a mite trickier...

    1. inevitable exec tampering aside, how do you compress the story so that it follows a traditional 2-hr narrative? where's the cutoff? they're including the Angelville arc, which is great (the Sy Co arc was rather pointless), but how do they wrap it up, then - that is, so that non-Preacher audiences will follow and be satisfied?

    2. I'm sorry, this project screams Verhoeven, Fincher, especially Sam Raimi, or someone with equal credentials - we should get balls-out action, great kinetic camerawork and art direction, and plenty of dark, subversive humor. Tank Girl did not exemplify any of these (unless you find Ice-T as a kangaroo dark and subversive), so why is this director attached? Maybe we're not giving her a fair chance, Tank Girl was probably doomed to start with, but let's not turn this film into another comic-book abortion.

    3. Casting. Ben Affleck could work, I gotta admit, he can't play it cheeky, though. Depp is an excellent actor, one of the best we've got, but I fear he's a bit diminutive for the role - unless you wanna portray Jesse as a small scrapper. Vince Vaughn? I can see that. My personal wet dream casting choice? C'mon, Campbell, all the way. Maybe he's getting too old to play Jesse in his younger years, but he's got the right look, the right attitude and even though we haven't seen it yet, the potential intensity to pull it off. Now...Cassidy. I'm digging on Carlyle, that's pretty inspired. Tulip? Remains to be seen, not too beautiful, definitely sexy, but with an edge... But the Saint? Mace Windu? Hey, I love Sam but let's not get carried away... personally, I always saw that fella from Con Air, you know, the one who played Swamp Thing, I forget his name - he was in Breakdown too - as the SoK, he looks EXACTLY like him.
Well, if this thing comes off right, and we get a sequel on our hands, maybe we can look forward to Brando as D'Aronique, puking in the same bucket he wore in Dr. Moreau.

    4. Where the fuck is Arseface? Please please please do not leave him out. I don't care if Courtney Love will take offense at his origins, he needs to be in the fucking movie! Better yet - cast Edward Norton in the part!

There's an age issue here, but here's some DIFFERENT ideas in casting as opposed to the young turks being suggested...

Patrick Swayze - Jesse -- good physical presence
Demi Moore - Tulip (she's tough enough and she doesn't look like a starved waif like the rest of the suggestions)
Starr - Patrick Stewart -- who else can carry a shaved head so well?

    Re: Preacher movie.

    by jajuka

'ello there, this is my first time on the ole Talk Back thingamajoo...so be gentle.
    Ok, a few things:
    1. Tulip, in my eyes, doesn't have to be a superbabe or anything. She's not at all unattractive, but she really isn't a supermodel type, either...for somer reason, I just thought of Rose McGowan as Tulip...if she can act...hmm. Anyhoo, this seems like the vaguest part to cast, in my opinion...she doesn't really look like any superactress or anything, so maybe an unknown is best.
    2. Jesse...Matthew M. or Jason Patric would be fine...there's a good amount of actors that could pull it off...it's all in the hair, really...it better look just like the early issues. And the accent doesn't seem like it's of great importance to me...it's fine if it's subtle.
    3. Cassidy: Someone mentioned Tim Roth, and that sounds really good...only if he can get a bit scruffy for the role. Hmm...maybe SickBoy from Trainspotting and Hackers, with a five o'clock shadow? Speaking of Hackers, Angelina Jolie might be a good Tulip...
    4. The Saint: Hell, everyone's said all the right choices...
    5. Arseface: Don't even put him in the movie, in my opinion...best reason I can think of putting him in would be to recreate the "Go fuck yourself" talk between him and the cop. Personally, I think a shot of someone wathching one of his videos would be the sweetest thing, even if it is out of continuity.
Ok, enough of that...yeah, this movie would be hard to fuck up...it's one of the most cinematic comics out there...the only ways this can suck is if they pick a shitty cast or if they mess with the plot too much...and another thing. This movie does NOT need to be NC-17 or anything...honestly, it could easily get by on an R rating. It's not THAT violent, and I fear the dialogue and the story itself is of far more concern than bringing a Dillion bullet-through-the-head shot to life. I mean, c'mon...read that first TPB and tell me that this won't be one of the most controversial movies of the decade, at least. I worry more about the religious reaction than anything else...fuck, a monkey could direct this movie, it's that simple to shoot. The fact that this is even seriously considered being turned into a moive is beyond me...sign o the times, I guess. All I know is that I'll always be happy going to the comic store that one Weds. a month and showing that smile once I see what twisted creation Fabry has on the cover. For me, a movie won't make me enjoy Preacher of film any more or less.
Well, all for me, sorry for typing so much...and to Harry: thanks for the site and for not posting the script or anything...any S.W. fan that wants to read that thing just doesn't get it, plain and simple.
Oh yeah, fergot something...fuck you, Hallenbeck.
    G'bye all,
    M.

    CASTING CALL

    by bigmanron

    Jesse - Jason Patric
    Tulip - Bridget Fonda
    Cass - Tim Roth
The Saint - Lance Henrickson, Clint Eastwood, or The Undertaker (seriously)...
    Arseface - Kurt Cobain (heh)

Patrick Sewar would make a good Starr, but there's gotta be someone better, I think.

No offense to "bad mother fucker" Sam Jackson, but STAY AWAY from the Saint of Killers role ! ! !

    SOme truths about preacher.

by thuran a true preacher fan

COme on folks, these castings are pathetic. some news about PREACHER, and some truth:
Fist, it's PREACHER. No "THE" just PREACHER.
Second, Garth Ennis IS involved, he's writing the damned screenplay since he owns all the rights. remeber, Vertigo is the creator owned section of DC.
    Casting, as reported by Patrick:
(Sorry Harry, but these guys are driving me nuts)
Jesse Custer: Rufus Sewell (he's been in talks already)
Tulip: Patricia Arquette (she's the model Fabry uses for his covers anyways...)
Cassidy: Tim Roth (Again, he's been cassidy on the covers.)

The only other person for the main cast could be Matt Dillon, since he's been Glenn Fabry's Jesse... but I'm told so has Rufus, so who knows?

As for SoK, I'm gonna have to agree, Palance is the way to go, and he's cheap as hell, not expensive like Eastwood, so He'd probably do it.

    A cunning plan ...

    by bruce

Alright fellers, I have a plan. Lean close and listen. First, we get a gun, a van, and a lot of petrol. Next, we kidnap Sam Raimi, and if we can't find him we kidnap Tarantino or Rodriquez. Next, we kidnap Lance Hendrickson (Saint of Killers ... the only choice.) After that ... well, it's open season on the rest of the cast and crew. Then we force them, under threat of much pain to make the film. Either that, or I can go do something constructive and stop gabbling like a madman.

    Casting hopes

    by the raven

    Here's what I would suggest...

    Rev. Jesse Custer: Sean Penn
    Tulip O'Hare: Patricia Arquette
    Cassidy: Mark Hammil
Saint of Killers: Tommy Lee Jones
    Herr Starr: Dennis Hopper
    Featherstone: Courteney Cox
(she has the bleak sense of humor for it)

As for director(s) I see no problem with their choice, but one film would not be able to encompass the entire story. A serial would definately be in order.

For your consideration... The Saint is...

    by matt the hatter

This late into the game I don't know if anyone will read this, but... From Issue one, I could only see one man as the "Saint of Killers":
    >>Clancy Brown<<. He was most recently seen as the drill sergeant who saves the day in STARSHIP TROOPERS, but most folks remember him as "the Kurgan" in the original HIGHLANDER. He's got the imposing size, demeanor, and voice. The Henrikson concept is growing on me though...
