Than having a 13-episode commitment, with the option of doing 22 if things improve. I suppose it is essentially the same thing, but this offers a bigger vote of confidence. Hopefully with this bigger audience, VM will not become the next Arrested Development.

    by paulh

Instead of the full 22, then the temptation would have been there to cut down to single digits and then make it disappear. And for those of you in New York and LA, you're in for a treat, since you have only thought the show's existance was a rumor (since it kept getting either pre-empted or shown in infomercial time - as in 2 or 3AM). The VM'ers on TV Without Pity are cowboy-ing up now that they know there's a season to look forward to.

    VM & ratings

    by trader groucho 2

Recent Nielson change to start counting college kids in on-campus housing should help, as should VM having a show like, say, Gilmore Girls as a lead-in. Seems maybe Rob Thomas was anticipating the 22/13 order with his plan to do three multi-ep mysteries rather than a single season-long arc. At any rate, glad to see VM's coming back.

    Ways to Improve VM Ratings

    by itchy

It's simple. Veronica goes to college. She's obviously unlucky with men, so one night she gets drunk at a progressive and ends up going down on her floormate, Lacey Chabert. They spend the first 5 minutes of every episode making out topless. When things get stale, they bring in "special guest stars" Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michelle Trachtenberg (for the Buffy crossover audience). I guarantee that it will be the highest rated show on TV within 3 weeks.

    CBS' lineup revealed!

    by paulh

Rather early, but here's the tipping points; no Sunday night movie (Without a Trace might be moving to face DH). Courting Alex and Out of Practice are outta here. King of Queens returns in January (How I Met Your Mother will pinch hit for it Mondays at 8 until then. Just four new shows (1 comedy, 3 dramas); The Class (the David Crane return to TV); a group of former 3rd-grade classmates reunited as adults). Dramas are Shark (w/James Woods as a celebrity defense attorney who becomes an L.A. prosecutor); Jericho (about the aftermath of a nuclear war in Kansas) and Smith, a thriller about career criminals plotting heists. (me: meh.) In the midseason bullpen; Rules of Engagement (single guy, his engaged friends and a married couple); Waterfront (Joe Pantoliano as a corrupt mayor of Providence) and 3 Lbs. (medical drama about a brain surgeon - Stanley Tucci). We'll find out what goes where tomorrow, and thanks to USA Today for the hat tip.

I'm not sure how renewing VM equates to racism, but SnapT, any fool knows it was picked up by the CW (read the damnn posts before commenting), not CBS. CBS doesn't have the balls to ever touch a show like this. Look how they cancelled Joan of Arcadia just as it was getting interesting and replaced it with the JLH Friday night cleavage party (not that I have anything against cleavage).

CBS owns The CW. And CBS aired VMars on Friday's....

    by mr. profit

Last summer to help drum up interest in the show and it's second season. Onto another topic, anyone notice how there are HUGE billboards for WB shows like OTH, and Supernatural all over major cities, but the UPN NEVER put up one billboard or ad for VMars. It's like they just aired the show and did not care. Hopefully the marketing people from The WB survived this merger so that they can give Veronica the proper promo she needs. Because UPN sure as hell had a lousy promo team.

    by mecps

I am humbled by your knowledge, and embarassed by my ignorance. I should have remembered the CBS repeats and put the pieces together. However, I'm inclined to (cautiously) disagree with your "lack of promotion" comment. Didn't I hear somewhere about VM using airplane banner advertising to promote the season finale, or was that some other show? I do agree that in general UPN sucked at promoting their own product, and their merger (i.e. collapse) was at least partially due to their lack of promotional prowess.

Don't be humbled, I am just a dude who reads too much :) You are correct about the sky banner, but the banner was actually paid for by fans of the show, not UPN. The WB promoted their product better than UPN. I remember going to Albany 3 weeks ago and EVERY Albany bus had a huge One Tree Hill banner painted across the side. I have never seen a Veronica poster in NYC. This innagural year for this new network will have every show survive the 2006-2007 season. But next season will be very different. The infighting between outgoing WB and incomming UPN execs that plagued the development of new pilots for the CW will end when many of the WB people are finally let go. I'm sure that once CBS gets its full handle on the situation, you can expect the quality of the pilots to pick up.

    Girlfriends was never in danger....

    by mr. profit

They always mention it surviving. And then there is Chris and Top Model. So it's not racist to bring back a critically acclaimed show that features a racially diverse cast and a white girl lead character who is far from The OC. Eve and One on One were NEVER Watercooler shows. You always hear people talk about Chris and Top Model, and Wendy Williams does a recap of Girlfriends every week on the radio. Also Veronica has a cult following. That counts. Look at how the One Tree Hill fans helped that show get renewed while the higher rated and more acclaimed Everwood got the boot.

    Cult Following/Acclaimed

    by glodene

It's amusing how we are quick to rationalize the survival of low rated shows by categorizing them as critically acclaimed or having a cult following, thus justifying their survival within a corporate business model that for the most part preaches the almighty bottom line (Ad Dollars). Mr. Profit are implying that the etnic viewers should be satisfied with Chris and Top Model? I work in a corporate environment and not once have i witnessed a group of yups gathering around a watercooler conversing about VM/Arrested Development (which lasted three seasons with abyssmal ratings)...Now can anyone name a predominately ethnic show (black, latino, asian) that has lasted over twelve eps (let alone, a whole season)? So Mr. Profit spare me (us) your supercelious attitude.
Btw, all this can be remedied if the TV medium would get off their collective asses and come up with a fair and accurate viewing rating system by placing Nielsen boxes in an equal amount of black, white, asian, latino etc homes...Things would get real fucking interesting.

Telling you their possible thought process....

    by mr. profit

Is different from my personal feelings on the subject. I don't hate on "ethnic" shows because that would be stupid and close minded. Also, I myself am not white. And just because I am a certain race, doesn't mean I have to automatically watch something because the show features people that look like me. TV to me is all about the quality of the way the show tells it's story. Back to the cancellations, Veronica Mars has rabid fans who sent in 2 dollar bills en masse to Dawn Ostroff last year and even flew a sky banner on a plane over the future offices of The CW. The networks notice these things. They like shows with very vocal and active fans. Especially when these rabid fans buy the DVD box set of a series at 50 bucks a pop. You dont see fans of "One on One" flying a plane over The CW. And you don't see fans of Eve screaming bloody murder over it's cancellation. They knew what they were doing. Eliminating the shows that are dead weight. Have you even seen Eve or One on One? Neither show is better than the worst episode of Living Single. And the argument that the CW cancellations are motivated by racism is flawed because they cancelled Reba, a high rated WB show. And I did not for once say that people should accept only Chris and Top Model. I for one despise Top Model, and Chris is only funny because of Tichina Arnold who was actually better on Martin. We shouldn't be so closed minded about TV anymore. Lost, Desperate Housewives, Veronica Mars all feature diverse casts or a minorty cast member in a featured role. And ABC's #1 show Grey's Anatomy was created by an African American woman and features 3 African American characters who get good storylines, are not poorly written, and hold positions of power at Seattle Grace.
