Singer soars from LOGAN'S RUN remake for rest, relaxation and possibly SUPERMAN RETURNS AGAIN!

Published at:  May 16, 2006 2:38:16 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... When I talked with Bryan Singer for my PENTHOUSE interview back a month or so ago, I asked him about LOGAN'S RUN and it was like touching a sore spot. For one, Bryan was exhausted sounding. Two - he sincerely seemed to be genuinely confused as to what he wanted to do. He told me some days he wakes up rearing to go wanting to march straight into it. Other days he wants to disappear and take a break. And still other times - he just wants to take that time and concentrate on his television shows, development of other film projects and shooting commercials which he still enjoys to do from time to time.

Well, today - Variety officially made it public that Singer MAY not direct the remake of LOGAN'S RUN. According to Variety - if SUPERMAN RETURNS succeeds at the Box Office, those at Warners would like to be shooting in 2nd half of 2007 with Singer directing. As for LOGAN'S RUN - Variety floats the idea that V FOR VENDETTA director - James McTeigue could step in to helm it. There ya go...

Here's what happens when you spend 300 million dollars.

    by lordenigma

I love that Supes has to be a lock to get a sequel. At this point; Smallville seems more than likely to be the next Superman movie. Not this cheese factoury that cost 425 million after all is said and done. Singer had a rough time on Supes. You have a rough time, then you start to have people questioning giving you more money for a rather expensive SCI-FI EPIC UPGRADE. Give it to McTiegue, let the W's write the script, and get another realitively inexpensive quality looking film from that creative team. Apparently the big money does not work that well with Singer. Giving the cash to someone that has been around that sort of cash before due to his Matrix involvement. A more realistic investment at this time for Logan's Run.

Good news for Singer but Supes probably won't be huge

McTeigue really surprised me with V for Vendetta. I don't think the Wachowskis nursed him through the production and I remember people stating that they only did the domino scene which was one of the more contrived parts of the film.

I hope they bring out more of the chilling aspects of the Sandman characters. I'm interested in the isolating elements of such an elite unit.

    Actually...

    by lordenigma

It's more like 425 due to all the starts and stops the production had before Singer even showed up. After PA, worldwide, the price could easily be HALF A BILLION. HALF A BILLION dollars for a film that easily could have been made for much less. To think that Smallville has captured Supes better, and the ENTIRE SERIES barely cost an EIGHTH of the budget for this film. Singer will get another shot at Supes, and he should be grateful. Not often, does one flame out, finish a film, then get a chance to helm a rather expensive sequel.

OK. It's just that large parts of the film seemed 'pay homage' to Logan's run. Much of the way the film played out and especially the final scene where all the clones walk out into the real world. That so reminded me of the final scene in Logan's run. Mind you, it also ripped off several other, better films as well.

    Singer

    by jasper stillwell

As I understand it, and as McKellan says, Singer's quite an internalised, intense director and agonises over everything (in the way party-man Ratner doesn't - guess who's going to live longer and make more dull direct-to-DVD movies!) so this kind of adds up. I'd like to see Superman before dissing it ideally, although I have to say the idea of remaking Richard Donner rather than creating a film Superman that the '78 original only really got about 60% right seems a little bankrupt to me. We'll see. Spacey looks good value but will Singer have the nerve to exapnd this idea outside of Donner-world? Is Doomsday gonna show up? And if Harry is writing for Penthouse does this mean he's getting laid more often than I am? That hurts.

Part of the budget was for Singer getting PAAAAYYYYYED more like a big movie star than a director after making Warners and Fox play chicken, and the strange occurrence of the budget swelling by the same 50 odd million that was supposedly spent on the previous attempts that supposedly wouldn't affect this version. And the MASSIVE effects sequence that was thrown in at the last second. Can I support this with hard evidence? Well SURE I can!!!

on their Superman movie before a single frame of film was ever shot, and long before Singer was signed. That was just because of total incompetence and disregard for the source material. Zod was supposed to be in Superman Returns but he wanted Jude Law to play the part and he was not available, so they wrote Zod out of the script. They will bring him back for the sequel. SMALLVILLE, the Big Screen, and WB Corporate...

    by leto iii

The reason we'll never see a SMALLVILLE feature on the big screen is due to the antagonistically-competitive Warner Bros. corporate structure -- unlike the other major studios (20th Century Fox, Universal, et al), Jack Warner set up the various arms of his studio *in competition* with one another, attempting to foster a sort of corporate Darwinism that the studio would emerge all the stronger from. 80 years later, it's now retrospectively considered a massively fucking stupid idea, and one that has seriously hurt the studio a number of times over the years. Also, WB Pictures (the feature film arm) largely wants *nothing* to do with WB Television (the arm that produces SMALLVILLE), considering TV "beneath" it...which is also why a BABYLON 5 movie has never been able to get made there, and why WB Pictures demanded JMS totally recast the film with "movie stars" a couple years back, or no deal. SMALLVILLE is -- to them -- utterly small potatoes, and is why Tom Welling never landed the movie gig. Wrongheaded, perhaps, but that's the way they're set up.***************FLY HIGH, DULUTH!!!

    LOGAN'S RUN COULD BE GOOD....

    by football

...if they stick close to the source material, eg: the characters don't get to live beyond 21 and Logan has to go on the run through a world of cities beneath the sea, frozen artic prison colonies, great hollowed-out mountains, adandoned cities etc.... then it could be really cool.

The book featured the exploits of Logan, a sandman who worked in one of the many cities in the future. There were no domed cities, though many elements of the book wound themselves into the movie in one way or another. In the book Logan and Jessica are far more developed characters than they are on the screen (either bog or small) following a underground railroad of mazecars and shady characters on a quest to get to Sanctuary, which ends up in a rocket ride from Florida.

I must admit I loved the book when I first stumbled across, and thought it infinitely better than the film and tv series. If you can just think somewhere between the original logan's run and Mad Max 2 then you'd be closer to the authors' vision. I hope Superman Return's doesn't suck the life out of this movies cos it really deserves to be remade correctly. The Island was a poor rip-off of a much better idea with overtones of The Clonus Horror... I just hope Bay never gets to make a movie I want to see ever again!! By that I mean I hope he doesn't get I Am Legend or a Bond movie!

Ratner: "I'm a Film-Maker First, Party Animal Second"

    by redd

Brett Ratner is frustrated by his image as a party animal, and fears he won't be taken seriously as a film-maker because of it. The Rush Hour director makes more headlines because of his A-list pals and rumored romances than the movies he makes. But Ratner - who has been linked with Serena Williams and Lindsay Lohan, and counts Sean 'Diddy' Combs and among his pals - insists work comes first and he only parties to wind down afterwards. He says, "I'm a serious film-maker and the people I work with know that so whatever is in the tabloids you can't take that seriously. I think, eat, sleep and dream film so that's what my focus is. That's the real me. I love women and I appreciate women but my focus is my work. You got to celebrate. That's the way to blow off steam. It's a hard grueling process and you want people to know that you really appreciate their hard work so I like to throw a few little soiree."

    Funny thing about Superman Returns

    by mrboinfoint

I saw M:I:3 on Saturday (What? I didn't pay for it) and when the Supes trailer came up the theater was buzzing with excitement. Some 40 year old soccer mom sitting down the row actually turned to her kids and said, "Wow, we've got to see that!" and her kids agreed. People that have no connection with the character other than the movies or the cartoons will see it, because to them, the trailer looks good. And hell, the trailer looked pretty good to me on the big screen too. It will make its money back. Meanwhile, there's no possibilty of getting Singer back to the X-films under any circumstances. Hey Homewrecker, not everything is a conspiracy

    by moto

I hate Bush. Terrible president. Shameful. But let's face it, not everything is a conspiracy. I suppose the moon landing never happened in your book. And the funniest thing about your comment, "Hundreds of witnesses saw no plane..." funny as hell. Do you realise how much of a non-statement that is? Besides, use that mush in your head... most people wouldn't have seen a plane coming that was traveling hundreds of miles per hour. EVERYONE would have to be looking at the same spot at the same time. Think Homewrecker, think... good dog, ruff.

    Don't feed the trolls.

    by docpazuzu

Despite homewrecker's rally cry of "one IP per username!", he has never -- despite being pointed in the right direction -- never ONCE attempted to verify that I'm his "gay jew zionist multi-username plant" boogeyman by contacting the mods on AICN. As much as the idea of someone that insane appeals to my sense of humor, I regret to say that he's merely a Scorched Planet troll with a stale act.

    by docpazuzu

If you actually believe that I am all of those people, you WOULD have tried. I don't have to be an AICN staff member to know that you would never make such an attempt at verification, for primarily two reasons: 1) if you had actually been insane, you wouldn't attempt it because it would collapse your entire world view or if supplied with a negative result, you would blame the whole site for the conspiracy, and 2) if you're a troll, you would have no INTEREST in verifying something which you don't believe in to begin with.

    Dont you think it's ironic

    by maulrat

That the Warner folk, in their wisdom, vitoed the JJ Abrams UPDATED script (with all the crap trimmed) based largely on the fact that it was going to cost the studio 240+ million to make??... Now they're letting Bryan Singers mob take a crack at superman lore with an assload more cash than JJ's would have cost.. Dont get me wrong.. I love Superman 1 & 2... but I would have liked to have seen an update of the origin story (ala batman begins) as opposed to a rehash (Singer calls it a homage... homage obviously being gaylish for rehash).. Routh is ok, for a Superman he makes a good Chris Reeve, and Spacey looks like Hackman but that's where the similarities end. I'm also not saying GET TOM WELLING... he'd look great in the suit and I'd get a bit of Smallville love on the big screen, but the guy can't really act.. I don't think Warners dropped the ball, they'll make their money back and then some (if Narnia can make a squillion dollars worldwide then a Superman movie will shit that in.. especially in the DVD arena).. but it would have been interesting to see what the reaction would have been to JJ's Superman movie (sans Ratner or McG).. I mean you could use the Williams score (which still seems to be the best thing I've heard about this movie to date), but get someone with some talent with directing action to direct it, like Michael Bay, or Tony Scott or something, someone who can hammer home the action, the boldness, the grandure that a character like Superman deserves... wouldn't that be a fitting 'homage' Bryan?

    Superman Returns And Sequels

    by barron34

I think if this movie does not do very well, they will try to stick Singer solely with the blame. At least $50 million of the cost of this flick was in wasted pre-production before Singer even came on board. I think the least we can expect is that Singer made an OK version that is faithful to the Superman mythos. To me, this is better than some of the bastardized ideas they had been kicking around for years. On the other hand, I do not think we are going to get much in the way of fresh and new. Singer's claim of "homage" means just that: faithful to the character, nothing to really rock the boat. In any case, I would prefer that to the script where Krytpon never exploded, Lex Luthor is a CIA agent, etc, etc.***** On another note, in the most recent trailer I saw, Spacey has a line of dialogue as Luthor. Was it me, or did he sort of sound like Michael Rosenbaum a bit? We all know from Spacey's hosting gigs on SNL that he is quite a good mimic. Wouldn't it be interesting if he based some of his performance of Lex Luthor on a sort of older Rosenbaum rather than doing a replay of Gene Hackman? Just a thought.**** Finally, I do think that the movie will do well enough worldwide to at least break even. Superman is a globally known iconic character. The high cost of this film is in part the $50 million upfront costs of years of wasted pre-production. This is part of why Warners must want a sequel already: it is a way of amortizing those old pre-production costs over two movies instead of just one. Another problem is the rising cost of FX. Anyway, I think the Superman character is well-known enough to draw big enough mainstream audiences along with the fanboys (present company included) to be at least a reasonable blockbuster worldwide. Add DVD sales, and the flick should do alright. A second picture probably makes sense, in that the studio will not waste any time or money going down the wrong street in development, but instead just use the same formula used to make this flick.

waiting to judge whether Singer deserves a Supes sequel

    by zauriel

So far I'm impressed by what I've seen, it looks like Singer's done a non-campy, much more serious take on the material, and the trailer, while not blood-rushing as it really should be, does raise a few hairs on the back of the neck seeing big blue in action again. As long as the movie doesn't disappoint, then Singer deserves a shot at the sequel, and I'd rather him skip Logan's Run, concentrate on some of his other project or take a break, then jump right back in for Superman Leaves Again (or whatever). If it's disappointing (which will be hard for me to come to, as a lifelong Supes fan), get someone else. It'd be interesting to see what Raimi or Jackson could do with it, though I doubt either would want it.
