Amazing LADY IN THE WATER Poster that hints at amazing sights!!!

Published at:  May 15, 2006 12:35:37 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a gorgeous poster with many hidden things to stare at and ponder. I did a two hour interview with Paul Giamatti for PENTHOUSE - where he hinted at a very OZ-ian base for the film. Including the possibility of flying monkeys!!! What all do you see in this poster? Click on it for full size!

    Nowhere to Go

    by bigsugar

It's my understanding that, during the writing/preproduction process, Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove was supposed to be a serious, taught thriller. But as the film progressed, the story became more and more ridiculous, becomeing a satire almost without any help at all. Up until his last film, I considered Shyamalan a competent film maker. I've heard all of the arguments for it The Village being a social commentary, a political satire, et al. Horeseshit. It was a muddled film with a poor excuse for a lead character so outpaced by other fine performances that it dragged the whole picture down. any and all subtlety would've been better than the overwhelming posturing the movie played to. Admittedly, the poster is a great piece of adverising. But The Village had great art as well.

The Paul Giamatti A-list domination starts here?

    by dr_buggerlugs

I sincerely hope this film is a giant fucking hit - not for Shyamalan (he's one of the fee directors working whose name alone is a guaranteed draw) but for Giamatti. He's now in a position where he'll always work, always get good lead parts but it'd pretty damn grand to see non-leading man type like him actually become a bona fide, appealing to the everyman, star. If not so be it, he's still a great actor but I'd rather see Giamatti and actors like Phil Hoffman ascend the A-List rather than another failed attempt to make Josh Lucas and Ashton Kutcher loved by the masses.

Perhaps these fantastical creatures will be alluded to, or we might capture a fleeting glance as one of them floats by the window. Perhaps this will be another character study/chamber piece where unknown mysteries will bang on the walls, and it is up to us to decide if the lead is sane or not. Lately Night has promised epics and delivered tone poems which are supposed to deconstruct our expectations. At least now I can walk into the theater with none, except for the chance that the Lady in the Water is only a fevered dream.

    "What a Twist"

    by neojanus

So let the speculation of the twist ending begin. I say Paul's character was tripping balls on cleaning fumes and actually drowned in the pool and his adventure is just god's way of saying, you've done good, welcome to heaven. But then we really learn that Bryce Howard's character was really the devil in disguise and drags him into to hell. And the last twist will be at the end when we learn the Ron Howard was the director all along and that this movie was actually an atemp to turn us into scientologists.

...and hate everything else Shyamalan has done. I'm definately in the minority, but I thought The Village was an excellent film with a powerful and poignant moral. The problem wasn't the movie - but you're own misled expectations. You wanted a horror but you go a drama instead. Boo-fucking-hoo. If The Village was any indication, then Shyamalan is finally starting to grow as a filmaker and a storyteller - and I look forward to Lady in the Water.

    Addendum

    by scrivener

As an added note, I had every detail of Sixth Sense mapped out in my head after the first five minutes. Ubreakable was slow, plodding, and played out like an overlong first act to a much better film. Signs was complete and utter shit. Unbelievable, full of logical inconsistencies, plot holes, and overacting and... it just plain fucking sucked.

    by modlight

see the Sixth Sense. I saw it the day it opened when no one knew that there was a surprise ending. And it worked like a charm. I think had I seen it with the knowledge that there was a twist I would've figured it out. But there is the issue of promotion. They didn't promote that saying TWIST!!!, but they did promote the Village saying HORROR!!! and there was the problem for me.

I agree a twist ending is only surprising if the movie isn't promoted as "You'll never believe the twist ending!". I just saw Derailed with Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owen. It would have been a much better movie if I didn't expect all the twists. I had it figured out in the first 5 minutes also.

    by bodhizattwa

    This is probably the plot:
Bryce Dallas Howard is actually dead! She's found dead in a pool. And the narrative is a dream sequence; the last seconds of her brain activity before the brain dies. We get to see a twisted and surreal version of her life because of the lack of oxygene in her brain. ENTER the fantasy figures in the poster.

This makes LADY IN THE WATER a combination of SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE WIZARD OF OZ and THE SIXTH SENSE.

    by hktelemacher

Isn't that also kind of the plot for both LOST HIGHWAY and MULHOLLAND DRIVE? A brain's fantasy fever dream in the electric seconds during the throes of death? Hey, I like how I worded that. Patent pending. ****** That is, however, one sick looking poster. Based on Unbreakable and The Village (I hated, hated, hated Sixth Sense and and mildly disliked Signs) this one could be good, but I'm a firm believer of a filmmaker having a rhythm (i.e, I'm a big subscriber to my also patent pending "Every other Tim Burton movie" theory) so who knows where this one will fall. "WHAT A TWIST!"

    by prague23

Why hasn't anyone noticed / mentioned that Chris Doyle is behind the camera so this movie is going to look amazing, before the blurry wolf/dog and 'creatures' which we'll hear, al la Robert Wise, but only see in blurry, underwater camerawork are hinted at arriving at the end? Seriouslly, this could be great. Just hope his budget gives him an upcoming Del Toro like alt-realm set where the other world, previously tragically MIA from S's films can finally be visually realized and by such a beautiful touch? Indeed, although disappointed by S's previous 2, I'm looking forward to this with a Big Cheshire grin: )

Unbreakable WAS the first plot of a stretched out movie. MKS had envisioned making three seperate movies, each movie designed to be ONE ACT of a plot. 1) Discovery of Abilities, 2) Perfecting Abilities, 3) Using abilities to overcome major threat... just like all the other superhero movies ever made. He wanted to be able to get very in depth with his characters by doing this... but the movie didn't make enough money for him to make the subsequent two. I have heard that he still wants to shoot the next two if he can get the backing for them.

i've said it before, and i'll say it again. Shyamalan is without doubt one of the best directors of our time. his movies have always been works of great suspense and beuatiful imagery. the problem is that he's also one of the worst fucking screenwriters of all time. if we could just stick him in front of a camera with someone else handling the typewriter, i think he could do astounding things. unfortunately, he's far too busy reading his own hype to do so. maybe this'll be the one that proves me wrong, but somehow the cynic in me doubts it.

I just fell in love with Dallace Bryce Howard after seeing the Village the first time.

This movie seemslike it will do nothing to discontinue that infatuation.

Signs has the worst "plot twist" ever conceived, let's see (spoilers) aliens who can be killed by contact with water attempt to take over a planet which is 2/3 water and on which rain falls every day. Liked "Unbreakable" and "Sixth Sense" the first time I saw them, but they do not hold up to repeat viewings.

It's a shame Mr M. Night doesn't seem inclined to produce a follow-up to Unbreakable. Here's one case where a sequel could be extremely well received (by me, at least)

Again, another idiot who thinks the ending to Signs was a "twist" and that it was water that killed the aliens and not bacteria in the water. (It was inspired by War of the Worlds, you know.) I for one think Shyamalan is one of the most original writers/directors working today, even if the fruitcakes on this site claim they figured everything out during the opening credits. I'd rather watch his movies and have some fun trying to figure out the ending (they used to be called mysteries and not twists) then see another run-of-the-mill blockbuster action flick or remake of an old classic. This is my summer movie of choice this year.

I agree with you on the whole "I so figured it out" wankery. But, while I enjoyed much of Signs, unfortunately the death-by-bacteria-in-the-water was never alluded to in the film. For all we know the aliens could have been killed by anything stored in a container (jellybeans). Or by any clear fluid (vodka attack ahoy!) Best option? The aliens were killed by water. Which is kinda dumb.

Whether it was bacteria in the water or just the water itself, it was plain stupid to write aliens advanced enough to have interstellar flight but not remember to pack spacesuits. by teddanson37

i'm afraid this movie is gonna suck. based soley on the fact that the village sucked. i think people have this idea that mr. shyamalan is some amazing writer/director when really he just got luck twice (sixth sense, and unbreakable) both movies are just really good ideas. The rewatchability of his movies are minimal due to the extremely slow simmer that he defines as a plot. usually these type movies have a plot, but usually his movies are usually just a series of events that reveal more questions just to point towards a twist ending no one saw coming. signs was alright. but the village was stupid. why? weak idea. no one thought that was a great twist. it was actually the first thing that popped into my head and then i thought "no way shyamalan is going for something that lame." my hopes in him were shattered. word is this is based on a story he made up for his daughter. that make me have even less faith in this movie. i hope it's good. and it just might be. but so far the idea seems like another stupid one, and we'll just have to see if there is a plot besides "it's not really the 1700's" or "Mel Gibson's got some alien problems". i hope this is mr. shyamalan's redemption from that village mess.

when the big twist is that there is no twist. Pure Hitchcockian fun when we are all waiting for it only to be blown away that it never happens. You can all say thta would suck, but it would make for a true suspensefull movie going experience. And I agree, for a young director the movies he has made so far have been very good.

...is a scary fucking writer. brutalized by the civil war, he did a lot of fascinating journalism, but also wrote creepy horror stories - if you like shirley jackson and lovecraft, you'll dig bierce. dingdong's movies look beautiful because he very cleverly surrounds himself with talented people who are good at their jobs. if he was any good at HIS job he wouldn't keep putting himself in his goddamned movies. also, a guy in an alien suit pretending to be scary should ONLY be allowed in a bobcat goldthwait movie.

    The Irony of The Poster

    by monkeymafia

I like this because the M. Night logo now carries the weighty burden of delivering a shock ending and I believe his last two (at least) never intended to keep the audience in the shadows until the last few minutes. This is like Carmen Electra. Yeah it'll be cool to see the layers of clothing slowly peel off fully or half-way but those pictures of her fully nude in Playboy we all saw makes us enjoy what we get without needing that big moment... Anyone get that?

OF COURSE There's No Happy Ending

    by jollydwarf

For one, it's Shyamalan. The best you can hope for is bittersweetness. Secondly, the trailers thusfar have seem to indicate that it's going to be a movie that goes from apprehension to wonder to terror to heartbreak. All the fantasy/fairy tale trappings aside, what we have here is the REGULAR guy with the FRUMPY looks leading the BORING life that meets the almost otherworldly BEAUTIFUL girl. She's never there to stay in his life forever, just to break up the monotony for a short time. And once she's lit a dormant part of his heart, inspired him to be more than he ever imagined possible, that's all she's supposed to do, and the cruel forces of Fate (monsters here?) take her away from him forever. No matter how much he wants to see her again, he knows that will only be possible in his haunted dreams and painful memories. I'm not saying she'll be killed or captured, but she'll probably have to return to her world to seal the terrors from it from ours. Or maybe she'll lead them away, and we'll never know what happens to her. Either way, a lonely guy feels gratitude and utter heartbreak as a knockout left-right combination, and if M. Night is successful (which he usually is), so will we. I can just feel this coming. Can you REALLY see a water nymph living happily ever after with Paul Giamatti, anyway?? Hey, if I'm wrong, don't tell me. I fucked up "The Village" for myself by reading this site too much. P.S. I wish this site allowed paragraphs.

Brian Froud was the illustrator genius behind the look of the Dark Crystal, Labrinth and the soon to be released (2007) The Power of the Dark Crystal, now in pre-production. You may also be familiar with his "Faerie" themed books. Froud's artwork was informed by the work of another English illustrator, Arthur Rackham. M. Night certainly isn't for everyone's tastes, but I've liked about everything he's done. Loved "The Village." I think this looks like it could be good. Who knows. Seems that some people are just ticked b/c they can't figure out what it's supposed to be about, exactly. I guess we've gotten too used to trailers that give away the whole freaking plot.
