Amazing LADY IN THE WATER Poster that hints at amazing sights!!!
Hey folks, Harry here with a gorgeous poster with many hidden things to stare at and ponder. I did a two hour interview with Paul Giamatti for PENTHOUSE - where he hinted at a very OZ-ian base for the film. Including the possibility of flying monkeys!!! What all do you see in this poster? Click on it for full size!

and Im really psyched about this movie-exceptional poster art.
-
M. Night is the Shizz Night!
-
*insert dirty joke here*
-
portal to a mystical realm in a swimming pool? no thanks. unbreakable was his last recommendable film.
-
I know her character has them but this would be so much better without them. She's a good looking girl, let's see more of her face, dammit.
-
and another talkback for M. Night bashers.
-
this is about a million times more interesting than that lame trailer from last week
-
This summer looks so shitty and this movie and maybe a couple others looks promising. I hope it does well because we need more movies like this, and less movie like The Breakup.
-
she's channeling a lot of the White Queen from Narnia there.
I still am sensing a lot of Lovecraft overtones from that trailer. It should be good. -
It's my understanding that, during the writing/preproduction process, Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove was supposed to be a serious, taught thriller. But as the film progressed, the story became more and more ridiculous, becomeing a satire almost without any help at all. Up until his last film, I considered Shyamalan a competent film maker. I've heard all of the arguments for it The Village being a social commentary, a political satire, et al. Horeseshit. It was a muddled film with a poor excuse for a lead character so outpaced by other fine performances that it dragged the whole picture down. any and all subtlety would've been better than the overwhelming posturing the movie played to. Admittedly, the poster is a great piece of adverising. But The Village had great art as well.
-
...but the poster is fucking cool!
-
I didn't realize Elijah Wood was in this!
sorry, just kidding about that. Though, proving that art is really subjective, I don't find this poster good at all. -
I may check this out!
-
I sincerely hope this film is a giant fucking hit - not for Shyamalan (he's one of the fee directors working whose name alone is a guaranteed draw) but for Giamatti. He's now in a position where he'll always work, always get good lead parts but it'd pretty damn grand to see non-leading man type like him actually become a bona fide, appealing to the everyman, star. If not so be it, he's still a great actor but I'd rather see Giamatti and actors like Phil Hoffman ascend the A-List rather than another failed attempt to make Josh Lucas and Ashton Kutcher loved by the masses.
-
....Or is that my crystal ball?
-
All of you that complain and complain about night will be there opening weekend so why bother complaining??
Someone enlighten me ^_^ -
Red Alpha Channel, zoom in on her right eye... Is that , VENOM?????!!?!?!
-
or at least the woman who will get a restraining order against me
-
Perhaps these fantastical creatures will be alluded to, or we might capture a fleeting glance as one of them floats by the window. Perhaps this will be another character study/chamber piece where unknown mysteries will bang on the walls, and it is up to us to decide if the lead is sane or not. Lately Night has promised epics and delivered tone poems which are supposed to deconstruct our expectations. At least now I can walk into the theater with none, except for the chance that the Lady in the Water is only a fevered dream.
-
Really, every movie of his is like a film version of specific episode...
-
So let the speculation of the twist ending begin. I say Paul's character was tripping balls on cleaning fumes and actually drowned in the pool and his adventure is just god's way of saying, you've done good, welcome to heaven. But then we really learn that Bryce Howard's character was really the devil in disguise and drags him into to hell. And the last twist will be at the end when we learn the Ron Howard was the director all along and that this movie was actually an atemp to turn us into scientologists.
-
Nope. Darn.
-
can't wait!
-
Arrgh! Beat me to it.
-
...and hate everything else Shyamalan has done. I'm definately in the minority, but I thought The Village was an excellent film with a powerful and poignant moral. The problem wasn't the movie - but you're own misled expectations. You wanted a horror but you go a drama instead. Boo-fucking-hoo. If The Village was any indication, then Shyamalan is finally starting to grow as a filmaker and a storyteller - and I look forward to Lady in the Water.
-
As an added note, I had every detail of Sixth Sense mapped out in my head after the first five minutes. Ubreakable was slow, plodding, and played out like an overlong first act to a much better film. Signs was complete and utter shit. Unbelievable, full of logical inconsistencies, plot holes, and overacting and... it just plain fucking sucked.
-
see the Sixth Sense. I saw it the day it opened when no one knew that there was a surprise ending. And it worked like a charm. I think had I seen it with the knowledge that there was a twist I would've figured it out. But there is the issue of promotion. They didn't promote that saying TWIST!!!, but they did promote the Village saying HORROR!!! and there was the problem for me.
-
Pretty nice touch, actually. I see that same type of design on book covers that random artists draw, and it does work in this instance. Old Bryce does look a tad creepy, which is good.
-
Yeah!!!!
-
I swear talkbacks can get so utterly predictable. Oh and also for the people who hate Signs have you guys just forgotten about the pantry scene or the birthday party video. Thats called great suspense. But whatever Shamalayan haters will never be placated.
-
I like Bryce Dallas Howard. I think she's cute and a promising actress. I like Paul Giamatti. He's just awesome and deserves his due. I like M. Night Shyamalan. Despite what his critics say I enjoy his films (haven't seen his pre-Sixth Sense films though). I like his each of the ones I've seen for different reasons. So, I can't wait for this.
-
Correction: I like each of the ones I've seen for different reasons. Frakking fingers!
-
Cool! I wonder of Bryce Dallas Howard uses force lightning too?
-
Two wolves, a few handwritten pages, two dessicated corpses, some feathers, a pendant, a dude with a flashlight, lots of hair and Bryce's face. Big whup. It's not like it's Nabokov. It looks like one of those cheesy posters you can buy at a holistic/psychic fair. Lame.

I see Darth Vader's mask and Venom in this poster!!!!
by brother desmond
-
I didn't know Christopher Doyle was the DP on this film. Wow. This film should definately LOOK good at the very least. Can't wait.
-
...wet people!
-
I agree a twist ending is only surprising if the movie isn't promoted as "You'll never believe the twist ending!". I just saw Derailed with Jennifer Aniston and Clive Owen. It would have been a much better movie if I didn't expect all the twists. I had it figured out in the first 5 minutes also.
-
THE LADY IN THE WATER ON A FUCKING PLANE!
-
...what Shermdawg sees in the poster. Ah, I think I hear the bubbling of his crack pipe now!
-
I saw it opening night. Even if I hadn't I recognized that the shot was a death sentence (in the theatrical release, it wasn't blood but black bile - which was an even more obvious clue for those who knew what it meant)... after that, knowing that the kid saw dead people from the TV spots made it a matter of adding 2 & 2.
-
Cause she looks like a Gelfling.
-
...he'll make his next movie a time-travel buddy picture set during the Civil War. Or a lowbrow comedy about a dog training academy.
-
I really hope he pulls this off.
-
i second that. i cant stand f-ing bangs. kind of looks like the kings son in braveheart....what a fag. also another second that to the neverending story poster.
-
This is probably the plot:
Bryce Dallas Howard is actually dead! She's found dead in a pool. And the narrative is a dream sequence; the last seconds of her brain activity before the brain dies. We get to see a twisted and surreal version of her life because of the lack of oxygene in her brain. ENTER the fantasy figures in the poster.
This makes LADY IN THE WATER a combination of SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE WIZARD OF OZ and THE SIXTH SENSE. -
And I really want to see the movie. Despite my accurate prediction of the plot.
-
Isn't that also kind of the plot for both LOST HIGHWAY and MULHOLLAND DRIVE? A brain's fantasy fever dream in the electric seconds during the throes of death? Hey, I like how I worded that. Patent pending. ****** That is, however, one sick looking poster. Based on Unbreakable and The Village (I hated, hated, hated Sixth Sense and and mildly disliked Signs) this one could be good, but I'm a firm believer of a filmmaker having a rhythm (i.e, I'm a big subscriber to my also patent pending "Every other Tim Burton movie" theory) so who knows where this one will fall. "WHAT A TWIST!"
-
Saw the traler and it looks soso. It didn't catch my interest. maybe the next trailer will dod ti for me. I know M's last two films, The Village and Signs were booty.
-
Why hasn't anyone noticed / mentioned that Chris Doyle is behind the camera so this movie is going to look amazing, before the blurry wolf/dog and 'creatures' which we'll hear, al la Robert Wise, but only see in blurry, underwater camerawork are hinted at arriving at the end? Seriouslly, this could be great. Just hope his budget gives him an upcoming Del Toro like alt-realm set where the other world, previously tragically MIA from S's films can finally be visually realized and by such a beautiful touch? Indeed, although disappointed by S's previous 2, I'm looking forward to this with a Big Cheshire grin: )
-
Just protecting their land from discovery by the Mundanes.
-
nemesisdarkside did mention Doyle previouslly. My apologies! NARF!!!
-
If anyone is old enough to remember that one...
-
Sorry, but he is. What I love most is that these movies are all his imagination. Not a book made to a movie or crap like that. His movies to me are as follows:
6th Sense: Outrageous!!
Unbreakable: Awesome!!
Signs: Intense!
The Village: Not so good.
So he had one movie that was sub par. I say this will be a great flick. -
Unbreakable WAS the first plot of a stretched out movie. MKS had envisioned making three seperate movies, each movie designed to be ONE ACT of a plot. 1) Discovery of Abilities, 2) Perfecting Abilities, 3) Using abilities to overcome major threat... just like all the other superhero movies ever made. He wanted to be able to get very in depth with his characters by doing this... but the movie didn't make enough money for him to make the subsequent two. I have heard that he still wants to shoot the next two if he can get the backing for them.
-
This is awesome! Not your everyday poster to be sure! Let's hope the film is as good!
-
i've said it before, and i'll say it again. Shyamalan is without doubt one of the best directors of our time. his movies have always been works of great suspense and beuatiful imagery. the problem is that he's also one of the worst fucking screenwriters of all time. if we could just stick him in front of a camera with someone else handling the typewriter, i think he could do astounding things. unfortunately, he's far too busy reading his own hype to do so. maybe this'll be the one that proves me wrong, but somehow the cynic in me doubts it.
-
Lost Highway had a plot? wow, that's a new one on me.
-
That's what it reminds me of.
-
think this movie was about a guy finding a mermaid in a pool? like a splash-like scenario??? it seems like a so much better concept if its a sort of epic fantasy. that would be pretty awesome. sepecially be shymalan
-
The famous French short film from the early 1960's that takes place inside a condemned man's mind during the instant of his hanging. The Twilight Zone presented it as an episode.
-
...like Howard, like Giamatti, like Shamalamadingdong...loved Unbreakable, liked Signs - heard it was War of The Worlds - so the ending was fine with me, liked the Village - figured it out pretty early but the atmosphere and tension keept me going...I'm on board for this one without much hesitation - it's not a new Spielberg/Malik/Cronenberg/R.Scott, but I've always had a good time with MNS's films - even on repeated viewings...and I agree that Giamatti should become an A-list character actor...if that's possible.
-
Besides being a "famous French short film," or a Twilight Zone episode, "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" was a short story by Ambrose Beirce.
But everything Shamalan's ever done is a thin mixture of other people's ideas. The poster? Two wolves and two sea hags? Terrific. -
Bryce Dallas Howard = my ass in the theater
-
Also the plot for Donnie Darko. Kinda Spoiler... maybe - apparently Lady in the Water's twist is more centered upon the inhabitants of The Cove, rather than the lovely Bryce. I could be wrong. It's great to read hktelemacher and Bodhizattwa thinking it through though. Chur.
-
I love nepotism, too.
-
I see that and I think "Brian Froud." I hope this movie's better than "The Village" cause man...
-
here's a ss version of the pic.
it's not very good but oh well.
cross your eyes so you have 3 images instead of 2. lock your eyes there and focus with your iris. the pic should come into focus and appear 3-dimensional.
-
Hope the movie is good.

About this poster? I wish studios would stop with the floating heads and do some original poster art like "Naked Lunch."
-
it kicks serious ass!
-
the village would have done better if it was marketed differently, it wasnt remotely disturbing-but I still liked it (although its not a patch on unbreakable-and signs was terrible)
-
well the egg beaters are very obvious
as is the bottle of dish detergent. the headphones are a bit obvious too and are they car keys or keys to something else? maybe a secret room or safe box? i guess the astronaut saluting the flag is from that moon photo but i dont know how that fits in. the step ladder could have something to do with the pool i guess. the can opener could be connected to the six pack of beer but you dont need a can opener to open a can of beer so it must be connected to something else. maybe the egg beaters? -

Werewolves, Monkeys and a guy with a flashlight, Oh my.
by lost skeleton
ok...now I am interested!
-
I just fell in love with Dallace Bryce Howard after seeing the Village the first time.
This movie seemslike it will do nothing to discontinue that infatuation.
>Sigh<
Paul Giamatti is a lucky bastard. -
I knew Night was a sucker for Lucas
-
you love her so much that you not only misspell her name but transpose it as well. Her name is even on the poster above. I think that officially makes you a retard.
-
Signs has the worst "plot twist" ever conceived, let's see (spoilers) aliens who can be killed by contact with water attempt to take over a planet which is 2/3 water and on which rain falls every day. Liked "Unbreakable" and "Sixth Sense" the first time I saw them, but they do not hold up to repeat viewings.
-
It's a shame Mr M. Night doesn't seem inclined to produce a follow-up to Unbreakable. Here's one case where a sequel could be extremely well received (by me, at least)
-
Again, another idiot who thinks the ending to Signs was a "twist" and that it was water that killed the aliens and not bacteria in the water. (It was inspired by War of the Worlds, you know.) I for one think Shyamalan is one of the most original writers/directors working today, even if the fruitcakes on this site claim they figured everything out during the opening credits. I'd rather watch his movies and have some fun trying to figure out the ending (they used to be called mysteries and not twists) then see another run-of-the-mill blockbuster action flick or remake of an old classic. This is my summer movie of choice this year.
-
I agree with you on the whole "I so figured it out" wankery. But, while I enjoyed much of Signs, unfortunately the death-by-bacteria-in-the-water was never alluded to in the film. For all we know the aliens could have been killed by anything stored in a container (jellybeans). Or by any clear fluid (vodka attack ahoy!) Best option? The aliens were killed by water. Which is kinda dumb.
-
What the hell happened to the WTC story? Plant? Fake? It hasn't seemed a problem in the past...
-
she's a man!
-
And you know it...They might not be the BEST movies in the world, but they're worth the 8 bucks. At least he's trying to be genuine.
I'll bet every poo poo 're in here is ga ga over 'Snakes', and will sday how great that movie is, meanwhile, it'll probably be just a piece of shit with some 'ironic' marketing behind it.
What a bummer. -
Say it isn't so!
-
Whether it was bacteria in the water or just the water itself, it was plain stupid to write aliens advanced enough to have interstellar flight but not remember to pack spacesuits. "Hey...You bring the food." "Yeah." "Porn?" "Check." "Protective spacesuits?" "Oh crap..." "Screw it, let's walk around naked...what could possibly hurt us?"
-
Nah it's true Warcraft. And I've also got a mighty fine bridge you might be interested in buying...
-
i'm afraid this movie is gonna suck. based soley on the fact that the village sucked. i think people have this idea that mr. shyamalan is some amazing writer/director when really he just got luck twice (sixth sense, and unbreakable) both movies are just really good ideas. The rewatchability of his movies are minimal due to the extremely slow simmer that he defines as a plot. usually these type movies have a plot, but usually his movies are usually just a series of events that reveal more questions just to point towards a twist ending no one saw coming. signs was alright. but the village was stupid. why? weak idea. no one thought that was a great twist. it was actually the first thing that popped into my head and then i thought "no way shyamalan is going for something that lame." my hopes in him were shattered. word is this is based on a story he made up for his daughter. that make me have even less faith in this movie. i hope it's good. and it just might be. but so far the idea seems like another stupid one, and we'll just have to see if there is a plot besides "it's not really the 1700's" or "Mel Gibson's got some alien problems". i hope this is mr. shyamalan's redemption from that village mess.
-
You're thinking of "War of the Worlds". The alien invasion and defeat had very little to do with the actual plot of "Signs".
-
that's what i heard
-
when the big twist is that there is no twist. Pure Hitchcockian fun when we are all waiting for it only to be blown away that it never happens. You can all say thta would suck, but it would make for a true suspensefull movie going experience. And I agree, for a young director the movies he has made so far have been very good.
-
Theres a face in the clouds!!! Right Sam? RIGHT????
-
...one would be happy to see while going under for the third time; the face of a siren come to make your drowning not such a bad thing after all. Bryce is a lovely young lady, and this should be a dynamite flick. And guys, the Shamalamadingdong thing stopped being funny a long time ago: how bout just calling him Night?
-
I recall it being above this one.
-
makes me think "icelandic barber shop".
-
I can't believe people are bringing out that old chestnut. Look...there are many things that in highly diluted form are harmless to humans, yet in concentrated form are nasty as shit. That's the deal with the water.
-
UNPLEASABLE - the poster is cool; i didn't think she could look so good. i saw THE SIXTH SENSE after i knew what the twist was (fuckin' entertainment weekly spoiled that for me in a blurb - everyone that works there should be...no, no, not gonna go there), and i still liked it. to each his/hers/its own.
-
(content deleted due to horrible accuracy)
-
It would fit the bill for Paul Giamatti's "Wizard of Oz" reference.
-
Did the trailer get pulled?
-
and in that poster I see my mother touching my penis.
-
I read the same damn EW spoiler, funny enough, at a Barnes and Noble while killing time before I sat down to see the Sixth Sense!! What's worse, I decided I wasn't going down alone and spoiled for my three other friends I saw it with. I wasn't very popular that night. Still a good movie though.
-
I didn't know Owl Creek originally started out as a short story. I'll have to find a copy and read it. Thanks for alerting me.
-
...is a scary fucking writer. brutalized by the civil war, he did a lot of fascinating journalism, but also wrote creepy horror stories - if you like shirley jackson and lovecraft, you'll dig bierce. dingdong's movies look beautiful because he very cleverly surrounds himself with talented people who are good at their jobs. if he was any good at HIS job he wouldn't keep putting himself in his goddamned movies. also, a guy in an alien suit pretending to be scary should ONLY be allowed in a bobcat goldthwait movie.
-
ok i can't remember where i read this or maybe i just heard it on tv but it was an interview with m night where he said that this will be his first movie where he won't use a twist ending. meaning he wants to get away from all of that.
-
I like this because the M. Night logo now carries the weighty burden of delivering a shock ending and I believe his last two (at least) never intended to keep the audience in the shadows until the last few minutes. This is like Carmen Electra. Yeah it'll be cool to see the layers of clothing slowly peel off fully or half-way but those pictures of her fully nude in Playboy we all saw makes us enjoy what we get without needing that big moment... Anyone get that?
-
It's more like seeing your sister by accident in the shower so now you can stop peeking through the closet door...
-
For one, it's Shyamalan. The best you can hope for is bittersweetness. Secondly, the trailers thusfar have seem to indicate that it's going to be a movie that goes from apprehension to wonder to terror to heartbreak. All the fantasy/fairy tale trappings aside, what we have here is the REGULAR guy with the FRUMPY looks leading the BORING life that meets the almost otherworldly BEAUTIFUL girl. She's never there to stay in his life forever, just to break up the monotony for a short time. And once she's lit a dormant part of his heart, inspired him to be more than he ever imagined possible, that's all she's supposed to do, and the cruel forces of Fate (monsters here?) take her away from him forever. No matter how much he wants to see her again, he knows that will only be possible in his haunted dreams and painful memories. I'm not saying she'll be killed or captured, but she'll probably have to return to her world to seal the terrors from it from ours. Or maybe she'll lead them away, and we'll never know what happens to her. Either way, a lonely guy feels gratitude and utter heartbreak as a knockout left-right combination, and if M. Night is successful (which he usually is), so will we. I can just feel this coming. Can you REALLY see a water nymph living happily ever after with Paul Giamatti, anyway?? Hey, if I'm wrong, don't tell me. I fucked up "The Village" for myself by reading this site too much. P.S. I wish this site allowed paragraphs.
-
EW is freakin' evil! i had a free subscription, and i asked them to cancel it for that blunder. evil i say!
-
You need manual release?
-
Brian Froud was the illustrator genius behind the look of the Dark Crystal, Labrinth and the soon to be released (2007) The Power of the Dark Crystal, now in pre-production. You may also be familiar with his "Faerie" themed books. Froud's artwork was informed by the work of another English illustrator, Arthur Rackham. You can see his influence on Froud in one illustration: http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/rackham9.htm
-
Absolutely fantastic stuff.
http://rackham.artpassions.net/ -
M. Knight Sham a Lamb a Ding Dong is at it AGAIN!!!
aNOTHER SELFIMPORTANT turd of a pic IN THE MAKEING! -
The big twist of the movie is that in the end you find out that the whole thing is just a bedtime story a man is telling his child. You heard it here first.
-
than the "creative" and ever-present word punnery on mr. shyamalan's last name ob these TBs. "sham a lamb a ding dong"? haha, how droll, how original. you're all idiots, and should all be destroyed. yes, I'm talking to you, mr. punner.
-
*****I have to agree. If there is a movie that is screaming to be made it
-
M. Night certainly isn't for everyone's tastes, but I've liked about everything he's done. Loved "The Village." I think this looks like it could be good. Who knows. Seems that some people are just ticked b/c they can't figure out what it's supposed to be about, exactly. I guess we've gotten too used to trailers that give away the whole freaking plot. May be a good movie...may not be...but it looks like it has potential.
-
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but doesn't this look like the famous image from Twin Peaks? That murdered girl?
Or maybe it's something from Nightmare on Elm Street, I forget. Anyway, it was of a drowned girl... -
interesting
-
Yay!
-
I'll hold judgement till it's out. And yes, does look like Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks...
-
Or snaga or whatever those monkey creepy things are. Looking forward to this even though I thought Village was only mildly entertaining. ** Anybody who thinks Bryce is "ugly" has different species taste than myself. ** Wow, turning into a real class act there anchorite {[:^)
-
The film comes out in 5 weeks and I have yet to see a poster (besides the "S" sheild). This time last year there were 5 different posters for Batman Begins (not to mention 8 different posters of venues from around the world, swarming with bats). You think Sony is going to be this lacadasickel with Spidey 3? Where are Superman's posters/billboards/magazine ads???
Harry, get on that shit! -
Beautiful.
If that was actually the twist ending, MNS would have my undying respect. -
...like Signs. You're waiting for the twist ending and there just isn't one. Then of course he makes up for it with the lame surprise in the Village, which -- by the way -- I totally predicted before I even saw the movie. Yes. Thank you.
-
And that's a good thing.
