SWEEPS DAY 17!! Last JUSTICE LEAGUE Ever!!

Published at:  May 13, 2006 12:21:54 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Batman: The Animated Series,” which in 1992 spawned the JLU’s version of the DC universe, aired 60 new half-hour episodes between Sept. 5, 1992, and May 24, 1993. Those were the days! The fifth and final season of “Justice League” managed to stretch 13 episodes from Sept. 15 of last year to the series finale tonight.

“Drunken Irishman” tells us what to expect:

What's this episode called?

"Destroyer"

Who's responsible?

Dwayne McDuffy for the writing and Joaquim Dos Santos directed.

Who from the League appears?

Almost everyone who has ever played a part in the series appears but only a select few have speaking roles.

Alright, so who speaks?

Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman (back at last), Flash, Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl and Jonn.

Jonn is back?

Indeed he is and his return is both amazing and unexpected.

What's he been doing?

Building a life for himself on earth. He's been living as an old man and he's involved with someone. Say it with me now, 'awwwwwww.'

And who are the bad guys?

Well, as we know from the last episode, Darkseid returned and Lex Luthor and the rest of the Secret Society of Super Villains arrive at JLU headquarters on earth telling the League that 'we have a little problem.' His plan is to unite with the League just this once to defeat Darkseid. Understandably, the League, and especially Superman, are wary of Luthor but they recognise that in order to defeat Darkseid, they will need all the help they can get. The SSoSV members who speak are Luthor, Giganta and Blight but we do see more others.

Why is Lex so pissed at Darkseid?

Apparently, he destroyed Brainiac. Luthor complains that he can no longer hear Brainiac in his head.

Ok, so what is Darkseid planning?

He's sent an armada of vessels and warriors to destroy Earth. His plan is to use giant drills to dig deep into the Earths core and create a crapload of 'fire pits' and it's up to the League to stop then any way they can. Oh, and he also wants to kill Superman, the other League members and every living thing on the planet.

And how does the League plan on stopping him?

To quote Batman, the plan is "to take out the small fries (the warrior demons) until the big fish (Darkseid) attacks." And they don't have to wait long. Darkseid is back and stronger than ever and doesn't want to waste time letting Kal-El know about it.

So is the episode largely concerned with Superman and Darkseid knocking the shit out of each other?

Not really. There's plenty of action all round. And they're not just confined to Metropolis or Gotham or Edge City. We see fights in London, Paris, Rome, Washington and on the Great Wall of China as well.

And are these fights good?

Not just good, outstanding. Particularly the battle between Darkseid and Superman. There's a fight scene on top of the Daily Planet building which results in the building being pretty much totalled that will totally blow your mind.

But if Darkseid is so powerful, how will the League defeat him? Superman barely survived their last encounter!

True, but Superman finally decided that he's held back on using his powers completely for far too long. To this end, he's gonna open a big can of whoop ass on Darkseid. But, they are going to need more than simple brute force to defeat Darkseid.

Meaning what?

Metron appears and may seem to know a way to defeat Darkseid by using the 'Anti-Life Equation' that Darkseid has been searching for. But it can only be retrieved by someone who is a '12th Level Intellect.' (How very Dungeons and Dragons) and may or may not involve a sacrifice?

And who would that be? Superman? Batman? Jonn? And what kind of sacrifice?

What, and ruin the whole ending?

What's good?

Oh, where to begin. "Oh come on, it's Lex 'Flippin' Luthor." Green Lantern using his ring to make a catapult. "Doesn't look like it quite made escape velocity." Flash finally got some action, and not the bad kind. The Daily Planet building being destroyed. The seemingly Matrix-inspired fight between Superman and Darkseid. Jonn returning in a most unexpected form. "Sorry it took me so long, I had to go put on my power suit." Batman finally getting some screen time again. Wonder Woman's reaction to Jonn returning. The fact that the fights were worldwide rather than localised to one city. That we get to see almost everyone who has every appeared on the show before. "Don't you have a tall building to go leap?" Superman showing Darkseid just how powerful he is. The surprising ending.

What's bad?

Wave good-bye to one of the best animated shows to ever grace our screens.

How does it end?

"And the adventure continues."

Rating: *****1/2 out of Five.

The entire fourteen run starting with Batman TAS. Five years of Justice League. Best adaptation of the JLA in any medium - including comics. So many memories, so many reviews, so many discussions with The Poozer. All good. Saw this at YouTube with crappy picture quality, it was still good. I fucking cried during the final moments. It's all good. Can't wait to watch it again on myTube. Damn, that was so good.

This is hands down the best Justice League episode, and a fine way to wrap up 14 years of animated perfection. Look back at the assorted Batman shows, Superman, Batman Beyond, the various movies, Justice League and JLU, and you'll be hard pressed to fina a combined 10 bad episodes. Timm & Dini (and all others involved) should be commended on the fine work they did for all those years.

Ass-kicking action, the send-off at the end was heartwarming, and it was so badass how Darkseid and Superman were whomping up on each other. Does Timm, Dini and co. have anything planned right now? Was a great series, and it was a good ep, but I wish they would have at least made it an hour, hour and a half final episode. It just felt too rushed to me.

And I agree about the more mature oriented American animation. I liked Spawn a lot on HBO, and I'd like to see something like Constantine, Witchblade or a Hellboy series on some channel that's not afraid to shoot for the above 14 crowd. Hell, even a DC centric show along the lines of the Elseworlds books would be cool too.

Very nice episode, but I wonder, what would motivate Sinestro, renegade former Green Lantern of the planet Korugar, to fight for Earth? As far as I can tell, the only reason he'd be in Luthor's Legion at all would be to beat up on Green Lanterns. Earth certainly isn't his world.

I can't believe this great ride is finally at an end. When I first heard that JLU was getting the axe, I was pissed for a month. Now having watched the last Justice League ever, I can only say one thing. Wow. If it had to end, I'm glad it ended on such a high note. They really could have phoned this in, but this was the best episode of the entire season, and one of the best ever to air. From the humble beginnings of Batman the Animated Series to the last episode of Justice League Unlimited, Bruce Timm and company have done a fantastic job. I wish I could shake their hands and say thank you. Heres hoping that Timm can find another DC title somewhere down the road and start the ride all over again. RIP JLU I will miss you.

    What's Next?

    by rpalompo

I've seen preliminary artwork for the new Legion of Super Heroes series and it looks more like Teen Titans than traditional Timm universe art. In other words, my kids will love it and I'll be missing the JLU. Has anyone gotten a straight answer as to WHY the League was cancelled? I saw Timm at Wondercon and he was very tight-lipped about it. He was very kind to my kids, though. That's what really counted to me. So what's really next for Timm and company? Timm wasn't as involved in Titans as he was with JLU. So if he's not doing Legion (and by the artwork it doesn't look like it----maybe it's Murakami's) what will he be working on next? Marvel's not doing that great of a job (Avengers was ok, but Hulk picking up Mjolnir....with no explanation???!!!). Come on Timm, Dini, and team!!! If you can't do JLU anymore WHAT'S NEXT???? We're going to be starving for some accurate, faithful, cool cartoon renditions of our favorite comic book heroes (DC or Marvel). BTW, I don't mean to judge Legion before I've seen one frame. I know the jury's still out. But according to that first picture released it don't look good. Aloha, JLU. We'll miss you. And thanks for a fun ride.

That was the Best way to wrap up the greatest Animated comic book series EVER!! Supes beating the ever lovin' crap out of Darkseid was beautiful. I still don't beleive he truly let loose, since he didn't use super-speed before darkseid could blink to see what hit him. Batman helping Superman was freakin awesome. If there isn't a JLU movie in the next two years, then I will truly be pissed. J'onn's return was great, Flash getting some: alright!. Superman, as usual,

    by chrisd

was Whimperman in this episode. Everyone else was kicking butt and the Daily Planet globe crushes him? They never have portrayed Superman very well in JL, and apparently never will. Batman was great, but his ability to anything to Darkseid just made Superman look that much whimpier. Superman was MUCH smarter and stronger and better in the original series.
JLU was cool in that it showcased other lesser known characters, and allowed for cool guest star voices: Morena Baccharin, Jeffrey Combs, and Nathan Fillion, for examples, as well the cool regular and/or veteran cast: the incomparable Kevin Conroy, Clancy Brown, Carl Lumbly, and Michael Rosenbaum (I'll let you figure out my opinion of George "Whimperman" Newbern). The Unlimited makeover was good, but ultimately too little, too late.
"The adventure continues". No, apparently it's over.

    Business, as usual

    by napoleon park

What's the deal with Cartoon network? From what I've heard, it's a business decision to specifically target a younger demographic; like seven to thirteen or something, rather than older teens and adults. Hey, nothing wrong with kids having another network, just too bad it had to be this one. *** What's up with [adult swim] and all the sophomoric non sequitor humor of Strokerbillies and the Twelve Ounce Hairpiece Forever? I have to assume it's some sort of bad drugs. And, hey, I loved me some good drugs in the day, but this stuff is just effed up for its own sake. *** That said, I still love Venture Brothers - even ones I've seen six times. And just asking here, but has anybody seen "Moral Orel". I can't even find anyone willing to acknowledge it, but I think it's a sacriliffic off the wall hoot and a half. (Still looking forward to CW's "The Batman/Legion" double feature in the fall (Saturdays, 11:00 AM to Noon, subject to change) and hoping for the best. I'll sure miss JLU (and the Question) though. Someone get Jeffery Combs to make a Question movie NOW! That, I'd watch.

When the League runs out after the Society at the end, and the on-screen groupings pay homage to the different team-ups throughout the years (Seven Soldiers, JSA, Detroit, JLE, Satellite), wrapping up with the core group and the final focus on the Big Three, ending on Bats' bat... perfection. *sniff*

NOT the end of Justice League

    by lobot72

I'm not sure where all this end of the Justice League stuff came from, and why everyone seems to believe it. An old college buddy of mine works for Time Warner, Cartoon Networks parent company, and he said that the show is on "hold" until later next year. Apparently DC wants more focus on the up coming Superman Returns and a few other projects that are in the works. He said that he has heard around the office that DC is working on some early drafts for a Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern movies. so hopefully he is right and we will see Justice League later down the road, and seeing how that last episode left some questions behind, like Batman saying he doesn't believe Luthor or darkseid was destroyed, then perhaps the show will be back.

Cartoon Network scheduled this show poorly and didn't give it near the promotion it needed -- and deserved. They treated JLU like a red-headed stepchild, favoring instead Anime' shows that resembled fever-dreams more than cartoons I'd like to sit and watch with kids -- or even alone. If you mean to suggest that this show is " on hold " for a year and a half -- pull the other one !

    by inwosuxred

Is the DC Universe as monkey fixated as this show was? I had to turn it off every episode that featured a talking gorilla of any kind, although I forced myself to sit throught he one last week, since I knew the end was near. Talking gorillas are lame. Even if it is a part of the DC universe, you don't have to focus on it in the cartoons. It would be like Marvel taking something as horrible as the Morlocks and putting them into an X-Men movie. Oh wait...

    Gorillas, Purple or otherwise.

    by napoleon park

Yes. If you've read much of what CBG writers Tony Isabella and Fred hembeck or Oddball comics guy Scott! shaw have written about the late-50s/early '60s DC Silver Age, it was a standing belief/myth that comic books always sold better if there was a gorilla, a hero in a prison cell or a purple background on the cover. Congorilla, the Gorilla Mob Boss of Gothom City, Titano the Super-Ape, Beppo the Super-Monkey, Detective Chimp, Angel and the Ape. Legend has it at least one DC comic every month had at least one of the above mentioned elements, and editors fought over who got that months purple or gorilla cover. And in the Weisinger and Kahnigher eras an eye catchy cover illo was often prepared in advance, and then a story written around it to include the depicted scene. So, yes, at one time in the Age of silver, DC really was talking gorilla happy. *** Someone else mentioned what I also noticed: the final scene ends with a zoom in on the bat symbol, effectively bookending this with Batman TAS. End of an era. *** Hope some of you will give CW's "The Batman/Legion of Super-Heroes" hour a chance. I've enjoyed most of The Batman and a lot of the Teen Titans in spite of the obvious anime influences on the art styles.

"Kal-El": FINALLLY they use the name Kal-El

    by mgthedj

Been waiting since the last episodes of "Batman Beyond" for that. Supes putting the smackdown on Darkseid was fantastic. Timm and Company, congratulations on a great run: the scripts and designs have been great, and the voice casting has been spot on. These shows, counting all of the 14+ year run, not only assembled the usual geek show favorites (Hamill, Pearlman, Torres, D'Abo, Acker, Ice-T, Malcolm McDowell and David Warner, Tombs, Lumbly, Browder) but you thought outside the box (with casting Stockard Channing, Powers Booth, Dana Delany, Peri Gilpin, Lori Petty, CCH Pounder, Robert Constanzo, Susan Sullivan, Farrah Forke, Sela Ward, Shelley Fabares, Mike Farrell, Tristan Rogers, and Finola Hughes just to name a few), and then your excellence lead to getting BIG SCREEN talent-including Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Teri Garr, Jeremy Piven, Virgina Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Linda Hamilton, Hector Elizondo, Elizabeth Pena, Tom Sizemore, Fairuza Balk, Alfred Molina, and Pam Grier. Ladies and Gentleman, you done good, you done good. Sincerely, a fan since Monday, September 7, 1992 (the episode Heart of Ice.)-----m

    "And the adventure continues...."

well at least in reruns,or watching an entire season of JLU on my PSP (damn memory stick can only hold 1 season!)Yeah it was a great run and hopefully a direct to dvd movie with an infinte crisis storyline will be in the works.(after all Darksied and Luthor may still be alive.) c'mon think about it Timm/WB.
oh as for the guy mentioning a witchblade series, there is a witchblade Anime series floating around (Bittorent PWNS!) and a Hellboy anime will soon follow. it's no JLU,but it's a better offering than say, teen titans or the batman and even the ultimate avengers. what a letdown.
props to timm, mcduffle, berkowitz, and the rest for giving us 5 fantastic years of great action, dialogue and stories. you shall be truly missed *geekesque tear*

Cartoon Network going down the tubes

    by lobot72

It seems that CN is replacing all their good shows with crap. I hated Teen Titans, that show should have been on Nickelodeon. CN keeps adding more garbage to Adult Swim. It seems that all of CN's new show are clones of Teen Titans and that god awful Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The only newer show they have that is sort of funny is Robot Chicken. The only good shows on Adult swim are the reruns of other shows from other networks such as Family Guy, Futurama and The Oblongs. Its obvious that Cartoon Network knows they are in trouble since they started showing movies like Spiderman to try and raise their ratings.

    blongos?

Awww fooock. Yes, "the Oblongs" is an example of a show that started on another network, but let it die, it sucks, it's not funny, nothing offends me and I hate it and find it insufferably offensive. *** I don't know all the business details, but I thought Cartoon Network and [adult swim] were two different corporations sharing one channel. Both have problems, though. Cartoon Network seems to be aiming to the 7-12 age range and not interested in adult viewers. And whoever's in charge of [adult swim] seems to have some serious drug and ego problems and think it's funny in a punk way to deliberately offend, insult and alienate their audience, and they don't seem to be willing to explain or justify why they feel this way. Still, I like Venture Brothers, The Boondocks, Moral Orel and about a third of the average Robot Chicken episode. And Harvey Birdman repeats hold up to repeat viewings, as do Family Guy and Footooruhmah. Minoriteam I just don't quite 'get' and perfect hair forever was worth watching a couple of times but I'm not familiar with whatever it's parodying. *** This is getting off topic for a JLu talkback, so let me add that I miss Justice League Unlimited already. Thanx to mgthedj above for the cast list; you forgot the Question, unless "Tombs" was a type for Combs. In a couple episodes he became the most bizarre, quirkiest, craziest hero on Tv ever. I apologizing for quoting myself, but seriously, I want a Jeffery Combs Question Movie or series... NOW! "?", yes, Aqualad, maybe not. Okay?
