New PAN'S LABYRINTH Trailer On-Line...Kind Of...!!

Published at:  May 12, 2006 11:00:32 PM CDT

href="mailto:merrick@aintitcool.com">Merrick gets lost walking in a straight line…

This is frustrating to link to because the material appears to be pretty cool, but the quality of video waiting for you on the other side is irritating-at-best. Consider that both a gripe, and a heads-up.

None the less, I thought you might like a look at the new trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s PAN’S LABYRINTH. Even through the haze of blocky texturing and pixilated motion, you can sense some pretty amazing design work and atmosphere afoot. Hopefully a sharper version of this trailer will find its way to duh Internets soon.

You can access the new trailer "http://www.clubcultura.com/clubcine/clubcineastas/guillermodeltoro/ellaberintodelfauno/trailer.swf " target=parent>HERE. The film’s official website can be found HERE.

LABYRINTH will compete in Cannes this year - the festival begins Wednesday.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in to point this out!

I'm sorry, but the way the headline ends with Kind Of... and how they all end in !!!... it just reminded me of Homer's reply to his brother... "Homer, I want you to answer me with some enthusiasm!" -- "SORT OF!!!"

    by scrivener

God, I love Del Toro. The guy has quite the imagination. I doubt we'll see this in the US any time soon compliments of Hollywoods disdain for all things not english, and that's a fucking shame. Now we just need Tideland and Southland Tales to make this this weirdest year in movies, ever.

...a movie like Henson's LABYRINTH, (which is about a tenth of a degree away, tone-wise, from being an all out kids horror flick) but with a darker edge that really explores the terrifying aspects of those fantasy situations. I hope this is what we get from good 'ol Guillermo. ***(what we didn't quite get from Mirrormask)

There is something cool about that. If you like frogs, that is. Anyways, love everything from Del Toro so far, esp. Blade 2. I guess it's in Spanish though, which sucks. Looking forward to the flick, though.

    by topaz4206

What a great career, that he can make mainstream fare like Blade2 and Hellboy, then go off to Spain and make personal films without anyone giving him shit. A true filmmaker. I just watched Devil's Backbone again, and really, it's a perfect ghost story. Perfect. Oh, and Paralyser: "I guess it's in Spanish though, which sucks." No, it's quite beautiful actually... my 400 Million speakers will have to disagree with you.

Cool monsters, awesome set design and the hint that we'll be seeing Franco's Falange troops getting their asses handed to them by demons and fairy folk. I'm so there. And is it just me, but doesn't a Mr. Voice-type guy work much better when you DON'T understand what he's saying? The gravelly tone is all you need for setting the mood, not that "in a woooooorrrrlllld...." shit.

    by tequilamocking

This is for all those people that hold Neverending Story in high regard, even if only for nostalgic value, and need to upgrade to a mature, ultra fucked up, similar film. I love GdT, but this looks like it may be his masterpiece. Cannes is going to be interesting. The four way competition between Fast Food Nation, Marie Antoinette, Southland Tales, and this should be vicious. All four films are drastically different, but they should be the highlights of this calendar year.

    by godoffireinhell

Cuervo Jones is absolutely correct about the obvious influence Arthur Machen's stories, most of all THE GREAT GOD PAN had on this film. Guillermo himself said he re-read all of Machen's stories before working on it. I think that story in itself would make a really kick-ass film. by godoffireinhell

TequilaMocking, please don't kid yourself. Genre films like this and SOUTHLAND TALES won't even be considered for any prizes at Cannes. I have no idea why they are even in competition. Everybody knows that the big awards will go to some "deep", soul-searching melodrama, preferably with a strong anti-American message.

    by abesapien

I love the way GDT moves his camera in his movies. His visuals move like cinematic silk. Like the camera is making love to the story that is unfolding. The love and attention to detail he puts in his films is astounding. I love this guy.

Southland Tales is a Dr. Strangelovesque satire about where America is heading politically and socially. It takes place in a police state after WWIII.

    by ingeld

a creature with eyes in the palm of his hands is just plain stupid. How the hell does it pick anything up without getting poked in the eye? It wouldn't be able to carry anything with two hands and walk--though typing might be easier. It would be the easiest monster to beat in a fight. Weird for the sake of weird. Even fantasy worlds have to have some kind of inner logic.

I think they appear and disappear as needed. What is kind of silly is that I saw the trailer only once but they had that enough shots of that thing for me to know this. Someone needs to learn how to cut a trailer over there.

He can certainly paint a pretty picture.

    by purityofessence

Del Toro certainly has a wonderful eye, (or maybe he just has a fantastic DP, a role which few people credit) but I have not been engaged by any of his films that I have seen (to be fair I haven't seen Backbone), Blade II was awful, the movie's logic even in it's fantastic settings was irredeemably stupid. Hellboy was just flat it looked cool but I just was not engaged, and I wanted it to be good. This movie looks like it has great atmosphere and I hope it's great. Then again a lot of people like del Toro just fine the way he is, so please don't take offense at my lukewarm evaluation of his works.

    dammit

    by frank cotton

let me try that again - was the DEVIL'S BACKBONE dubbed when it hit DVD? i figure if it was, this will be too. subtitles aren't that bad, i mean, i don't care for them either, you miss a lot of what goes on onscreen when you're reading them. but if you have a decent memory, you can pay more attention to the screen the second time you watch it. the first time i saw CITY OF LOST CHILDREN it was dubbed, altho if i remember correctly, i paid more attention to the visuals than what was being said. i just picked up NATURAL CITY, which is subtitled only, but i wouldn't miss it just because of that

[-I've only seen three films directed by Del Toro. Blade 2, The Devil's Backbone, and Hellboy, and I was really impressed with the three of them. Especially with Devil's Backbone. The visuals in this trailer are awesome and they showcase Del Toro's unique style. I'll be there opening week. See that wasn't so bad. This message is in spanish and english, kinda, sort of like this movie...and very little was lost. So watch it, and read the subtis...really,go, Del Toro is good. You'll have fun. I promise. Read Faster (And: Dubbed)

    by topaz4206

Seeing as how people speak at about 100 words per minute, and people can read anywhere between 500-700 words per minute, I've usually read the whole subtitle by the time the dude utters his 3rd word. No big! BTW, Devil's Backbone DVD was not dubbed. And it's still a perfect film.
