I don't know, the stuff in the clip looked alright. It's kind of hard to tell. All those rapid-fire commercials with drums pounding away in the background are sort of like sensory overloads, really.

... we're gonna get some life on the talkbacks here. It seems like today everyone is just too damn fatigued from all the general wankery invading this site. About time we had some "news" and r come to stop the plants and fake reviews. I'm looking forward to seeing the plane falling on the big screen. I agree with you Ribbons on the sensory overload thing. Same thing's happening with X-Men 3. By the time we get to the film everything will just seem too damn familar. Cause we would have seen the entire film in .005 second shots already.

I hate to bring this into a superman tb but...

    by HolyCalamity

All the early word on IMDB is saying that X-Men is amazing... and if you check moviehole they are reporting that one of their reviewers LOVED IT!! I am hoping and praying... plus there is a confirmation about a 2-3 min fight between Juggernaut and Collosus... ROCK OUT!!

    "Holy Calamity...

Scream insanity? All you ever gonna be's another great fan of me." Handsome Boy Modelling School couldn't have said it better. Much as though I'd love to see the aforementioned three minute fight I just can't see it happening. What with the Juggernaut already chucking Wolverine and chasing Shadowcat. And don't worry about bringing it into a Superman tb. It's never stopped anyone before.

Does Spacey seem a bit over-the-top to anyone? Maybe they're just showing those sorts of clips, but I was hoping for a more menacing, less jovial version. Think Hoffman from MI:3... If it's just me, I'll shut up

    by donuts

what was delivered was not only a solid quick "shot" of the film but it also demonstrated that one shot of the SR easily cost more than a season full of Smallville episodes :) I can't want to see a more long form, less frantic, non-stacatto peak into the film. My only question is...Where's Otis? -

    by slder78

The drum beat were a little reminiscent of the title sequence. Oh and I'll never forgive TPTB for choosing Hallie Berry as Storm over Angela Bassett. The one thing that has consistantly brought the X-movies down. BTW that last shot of Supes was pretty cool in a Jack Bauer "I don't think you look like a person who's willing to die for Christopher Henderson" type way.

I'm still a tad cynical about the hopes for this summer (or winter where I am). But glad I could provide some light in your day. It's been a weird day at AICN. I've haven't really been paying attention and still managed first at four talkbacks. And AICN says it'll only post negative reviews of X3 without confirming the source. And then pulls said negative review. And lepointe28 talking shit. And nobody really caring, or even debatign anything. And, and....

Warner Bros. spent damn-near 200M on this CRAP?

    by KAWS

This looks worst than a really bad Sci-Fi Channel movie. Much like the full trailer, pretty cheesy and boring, there's nothing in it that we haven't seen before. And what's with the look of this film, it's incredibly shiny, it looks like everything is dipped in GLOSS? Just a bunch of set pieces and shiny CGI, is any of this film shot on location? Bullets bouncing of of Supes' chest, earthquakes, saving Lois, and an over-the-top hamming it up Lex, etc. We've already seen most of these various motifs in Donner's film and previous Supes' movies. How fucking unoriginal. The only thing I've seen thus far that's remotely original, is that CHUCKY looking kid born from Superman's seeds. And that whole concept sucks 8 different asses<>Superman the deadbeat dad. A weak looking pretty-boy Superman and a half-assed unoriginal director. This isn't worth downloading for free. Hollywood will continue to make money off of you idiots, if you don't wake up.

...for this new film should've been wholly rewritten. Maybe using a couple cues but in general they should've scored it completely new. I prefer this TV spot to the rest of the trailers because of the music. It already feels better despite how generic the score is. Your judgment of the film is now based on what you're seeing and not the nostalgic effects of the old score. It's genius and lazy all at the same time. Now I'm not saying I don't like the Superman theme, it's iconic after all! And that's the problem. It's iconic. This movie isn't. Not yet. And I don't think it will ever be no matter how good it turns out. After all it's a thinly disguised remake, after all imagine the fans if you TOLD them you're remaking Superman. Instead we're "keeping faithful" to the original. Whatever...They managed to make an effective score for Batman Begins without resorting to copying Elfman's fantastic score. It wasn't great as a separate score but it worked extremely well within context and in amplifying the visuals. The bottom line for me is that SR will be awesome to watch, but nothing like it could've been. This is absolutely not a faithful representation of Superman ladies and gentleman, I've said it before and I'll say it again, this movie is faithful to the original movie and not the comic so in the end this is just a lovely $200m wasted opportunity. I'll see it anyway as it does look fun.

...seems to be everywhere in the film and movie versions of Superman. Can we PLEASE have a narrative where Kryptonite wasn't involved. Smallville is particularly guilty of this, it seems that half of Krypton landed on Earth after the explosion. Go to any flea market and you'll find all sorts of cheap necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. made of Kryptonite. That'd make a great episode of Smallville actually...Bring us some SUPERVILLAINS so we don't have to keep on using the same PLOT DEVICE!!

    by andrew coleman

Why? Does he exist in real life because if he does and you guys are hanging out with him. Kill him because he is one bad dude. Otherwise he's a fictional character he can say whatever because it doesn't matter. He could say "I'm going to make Superman my bitch!" and it wouldn't matter. Personally I hope he does say that in SR.

Umm, did you miss the part where it says "exclusive?" This is probably another one of those things where AICN runs one commercial, then MTV gets to run another one, then eFilmCritic gets to run another one, and so on. Sort of like with the 'V for Vendetta' posters, or the 'Nacho Libre' teaser. But you know... bitch about how Harry needs to post links to X-Men commercials that you can watch on YouTube anyway.

I still want to see Supes Returns. I simply wished for a film that would be more in the vain of what we have had from Comic Book films since Blade. If you are an old-schooler then i bet his will be art, if post well thank Rao you have the big S on fiom at all. I agree with someone above. WHY USE HALLE BERRY AS STORM???? They should have hired someone atrociously HOT to play the role of ROGUE. Someone like Shania Twain but younger and who can act and talk in a southern accent. They should have hired a distinguished, mature, african woman to play the role of Storm. I would have been MUCH more accepting of those films.

I don't think it looks that bad. The only real thing that annoys me is the kid. Why did they have to put that in to the movie? Obviously DC had to give them permission to do that. Makes me wonder if the same thing is headed for the comics in one form or the other.

I like the intensity of this one a lot! By comparison, the trailer was very much underwhelming. If this intensity is representative of the movie's tone (and not a marketing ploy), my anticipation for Superman Returns will get a significant boost.

Supergirl Strips...actually I wouldn't mind that one. Point is I think the way ahead is clear, all DC superhero movies must add a verb to the end of the character's name in the title from now on. It should be like a law or something. • about this movie. I mean it looks like it'll be great for what it wants to be....and yet I'm not sure it's what I will want it to be. I hope I can lend myself over to it. I imagined a great Superman movie all through the 90s, so this has a kind of "Phantom Menace" sense of not possibly living up to all that I've thought it could be. Imagination always makes ideas sound better than they would actually be in execution, hence the dissatisfaction of so many fanboys over movies. But still, I haven't seen anything in the trailers that really gets me excited (apart from hearing the John Wiliams music). Superman himself looks so much like Jason Schwarzman from Rushmore, and Kevin Spacey's Luthor is so far not working for me. I wish it had been Terry O'Quinn. And oh great, more homosexual undertones as Luthor appears to buttrape Superman in the Fortress of Solitude. I guess topping the "kneel before Zod" stuff was a priority. I'm kidding. Seriously, I can't help feeling meh about the stuff I've seen and I really don't like that that's my reaction. And knowing this potentially disappointing outing comes in the place of the X-Men 3 we should have had makes it worse. I hope when I see the movies I will feel differently, it's not fair to judge so much before seeing them.

    "The NEW Comic Book Genre"

    by SpyGuy

That really cracks me up. What, did everyone suddenly forget there were four SUPERMAN films in the '70s and '80s and four BATMAN films in the late '80s and '90s? (Okay, the last two of each can be forgotten, but still...) DICK TRACY? THE ROCKETEER? That horrible PUNISHER flick with Dolph Lundgren (as opposed to the not-quite-as-horrible PUNISHER flick with Thomas Jane)? The craptacular HOWARD THE DUCK? Yeah, comic book flicks are sure new, all right. Whatever.

  • May 12, 2006, 7:38 a.m. CST

Maybe you should read the article

    by The Colonel

Comic book movies didn't become a viable box office force until X-Men and Spider-man. The original Superman and Batman movies weren't a GENRE, they were just a few drops in the bucket.

    Can't wait

    by Babyshamble

I totally trust Singer to pull this off, X2 is my favourite comic book movie as I cared about the characters and love the look and tone he used for the X men films. He could have very easily stayed dark and moody for Superman, especially considering how well recieved Batman begins was, yet he's stuck to his vision of Superman. He respects what's gone before and doesn't want to step on Smallvilles toes. I mean, at one stage McG was meant to direct this. Fucking McG! We should all be grateful Singer is on board. After seeing Mi:3 I think JJ Abrahms could have done a good job however he often seems to use ridiculous plot devices, Rabbit's foot? And i loathed the scooby doo style masks. We should all be psyched, a new Superman movie with Kevin Spacey as Lex. WHAT MORE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT? Oh and i think Scarlet Johansson would have been a good Lois

    Supes vs. X3

    by Blanket-Man

"if you honestly think X3 is going to sell more tickets this summer than Superman Returns...." While the smart money is on SR to win the B.O. crown this summer, it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that X3 could kick SR to the curb, either (the earlier release date will help X3, for instance). I'm still a little wary of the public's "clamoring" for another Superman film. Really? Especially one that looks like a retread of the Donner films. I just wish he wasn't battling Luthor again...

This site needs to start showing a bit of support for X men, it could surprise us all and make more money than superman. Really great clips

Neither of these movies look like their worth my nine bucks, which sucks because I know I'll shell it out anyway. They've yet to show us anything impressive about Superman, (which I hope is just a ruse to blow us away in the theater, but I doubt it) and X3 looks to have all of drama of a Bill Bixby made-for-tv Hulk movie, though at least some of the special effects shots look decent.

    by nycman100

I have never read such blantant jealous/nit picking in my life. The reason they don't have Superman say much in the commercials? Because you all would complain "he sounds too much like Reeves! He does not sound like Reeves! This is Superman? This movie is going to suck! whaa whaa whaa" The only thing that is for sure is that anyone who comments here is going to see it.

Both X-Men and Superman look to be mediocre at best. But I'm predicting both to be flaming turds. Just Superman fanboys have such an incredibly huge chip on their shoulders. They don't mind pissing all over the X-men movie but soon as you say something negative about superman, they claw at you like cornered animals. Maybe it's because the nitpicks are minor ones, like gross miscasting of characters, recycled story line of the first Superman movie, Kevin Spacey playing Dr. Evil, and lousy CGI effects. Who needs things like story, interesting characters, and great s/fx when you have John Williams' original Superman score playing in the background?

Superman needs some professional bodybuilding tips...

    by JDanielP

...because it is quite clear his upper body needs some beefing up... or his legs need some reduction. I'm looking forward to this like any Superman fan... but I'm a stickler for the details, be it costume design or the way a person physically trains in becoming a popular comic book character. Brandon needs to increase the weight when working out his arms and shoulders while doing fewer reps, to add bulk. And to slim down his legs, he needs to do the opposite. Beef up the upper body or slim down the lower body... or both. Whatever the case, just make the upper body and lower body look as if they actually belong together, on the same body. Know what I mean? Just ask any professional bodybuilder about the importance of not allowing the upper or lower body visually overpower the other.

Been looking forward to Supes for ages but all the promos have left me cold. I can't work out if it's because of years of anticipation (although I went thru that with the prequels and still managed to get excited, despite eventual movie quality), or just that I'm not that into the direction they have gone in. I'm sure I will see it, and I hope it's good, but I remember being way more excited for Batman last year. In other superhero news: WB are not picking up the pilot of Aquaman for series. Apparently, in Hollywood, you have to spend a shit load of money and then decide that you had a dumb idea in the first place.

  • May 12, 2006, 9:34 a.m. CST

Erm, what exactly is Lex doing to him?

    by Bono Luthor

I know what it looks like. Hope is fading for me on this one. There is a magazine out here in the UK with a picture of Supes and Lois on the cover in which Supes just looks weedy and nerdy, more like a Superboy. I also saw some of the toys today, which are really funny. They puff up the body and arms to make him look like Superman, and then stick this weedy little Brandon Routh head on top. I still hope I'm blown away by Routh as Supes when I get to see the whole thing, but I just can't shake the feeling that everything about this film is going to be right apart from the casting of the one guy that it's all about. Oh, and, for the record, I'm not an X3 fan.

AND the X-Men movie. Look, dickweeds -- Superman was almost a Peter Guber fiasco, with black leotards and gay polar bears. So what if both movies aren't "Gone With the Wind" or "Ghandi"? The studios are bringing some of my favorite characters to the big screen, and for the most part doing a fair to great job of it. If you don't like it, then stay home and play Dungeons and Dragons in your basement. I will be first in line on June 30th. If that makes me a studio shill, so be it. Frankly, my world isn't going to stop spinning if I shell out $10 and 2 hours for a movie. Asshats.

    An agnostic opinion . . .

    by Nice Marmot

I agree w/ those who oppose the similarities to Superman & SMII. Don't like SM AND Clark taking off & then returning 5 years later. Really don't like SM being saved by some bimbo assistant of Lex's w/ a change of heart. HOWEVER, we NEED to see SM in action w/ today's effects. Had to be done. Neo flying around didn't count, we need to see SUPERMAN do it. I am excited for this movie because, even though I haven't seen it yet, the previews alone tell me I can start foaming at the mouth for the follow up. THEN, in the right hands, we'll get a kickass, ALL NEW SM film. And I'm hoping for a Brainiac / Kandor (w/ Lex still involved in a very MINOR role) type story. Nobody in their right mind will be bitching about that.

  • May 12, 2006, 10:38 a.m. CST

Stuff I think no one wants to see again...

by hank henshaw a Superman movie: Lois in peril or kidnapped and being so helpless to not even try to get out of danger herself. Lex Luthor as the only villian, specially this wacky interpretation of Lex Luthor. Chunks of Kryptonite, unless it's Metallo's heart or the K-Man. The extremely nerdy Clark Kent. A bland Superman, I think he shouldn't be a wisecracking smart-ass, but he should have some over-confident attitude and a few one-liners.

As I said, I am still hoping that this movie will do it for me, and sure I'll go and see it. But that doesn't mean that I can't express and opinon without being insulted. To me, this movie looks like it may be a turd. That is all. There is no need for my opinion to detract from your anticipation and vice versa. Surely if everybody just came here to agree on everything and be cheerleaders then it would be very boring and pointless. No I'm off to enjoy the sunshine. by JUSTICE41

Was that Hackman giving Routh The un-greased fist? What was that that violated my computer with it's halfassedness. I just finished watching Steven Chow's Kung Fu Hustle and saw about the same level of CGI effects in that cheap flick as this Flicks trailer. In Fact The Landing Routh made in the main trailer looked far crappier than the feather like landings and hard and heavy as stones landing in KFH. When Chow was coming back to earth just before he does his Buddha Fist thing the fire and jitter cam shot looked as good as the shot of Routh in the main trailer as he chased the plane down. How can a movie made on a shoestring budget like KFH have better effects or at least the same and have better utilization of those effects than a 200+ million dollar movie? The ship or boat breaking up looked as bad as the scenes in the perfect Storm and Poseidon. Both directed by peterson I believe. It's a sad day when a cheap chop socky flick has better effects than a major motion. picture.

Think this was shot with Panavision's Genesis...

    by SK909

I don't think this was shot with the Sony cinealta like Star Wars and collateral. I think it was shot with the Panavision Genesis or the Arri D20 or 5 or whatever it is. These cameras are nextgen HD cams, as they use single chip sensors that are the same size as the 35mm frame of film. This means the same optics. I'm pretty interested to see how the new HD optics handle depth of field. It should be exactly like film. The movie itself, however, doesn't look good to me. I was never excited or not excited by the prospect of another Superman film, I just thought I'll make up my mind when I see something, and so far, I think the FX look like shit. To this day, the best cgi effects are the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, particularly the Trex jeep attack in JP1. I think some truly amazing things were done in the new star wars films, the least of which was the actual plot and writing, but, for the most part, I think things seem to be now looking faker and faker. Some things in the LOTR films are also a notable exception. I think part of this might have to do with the new generation of CGI artists not having the same background with practical effects as the first generation of artists who, I think, incorporated a much better knowledge of lighting and what you can get away with and what you can't as far as physics is concerned. I also think that, being that they were initially skeptical of CG, they demanded much more of it, especially in the case of the first Jurassic Park, where it was never even intended to use it at first. I agree with the poster who said everything in this movie looks shiny. King Kong had this strange unrealistic look to everything as well. Could also be a case of asking too much with too little money and too little time... not sure what it is, really. The tank chase sequence in Indiana Jones and the last crusade remains one of the best action-adventure sequences ever, in my mind, and it still, when I watch it on DVD on the 52" screen with the booming surround, sends chills down the spine with just how perfect a piece of cinema it is. That was Spielberg at the top of his game. Perfect pacing, perfect music... all beautifully shot and well acted. Its just crazy that, with all of this technology, if you pop in a DVD of apocalpyse now and play the entire air cavalry attack sequence all the way through with the sound turned way up, I guarantee it will blow anyone's head back way farther than anything we've seen in CG. It should be more about getting out in real locations and using the effects here and there to add nuances and bits and pieces to something that already exists because when the artists are working within a shot where some of the environment actually is real, they references WITHIN THE SHOT, rather than putting naomi watts in front of a screen and telling her she's in the jungle. Ahhh... what the fuck ever, nobody listens.

The lack of Routh Dialogue in the trailers serves the purpose of using the symbolism of the superman imagery to represent something greater than a talking man in a suit. People want to see Superman, not Brandon Routh. Thats why they chose an unknown for the role. Also, go back and watch all of the "Superman The Movie" teasers and Trailers. Christopher Reeve delivers NO dialogue. NONE.

eh, I still think Clancy Brown would have

    by cromulent

been a brillant Lex Luthor. No disrespect to Spacey, but Clancy nails Lex in the cartoon and has the presence and look in real life.

Rev skarekroe there's an echo in here & yes sk909

    by half vader

It was shot with the Genesis which is a silly name considering it's not a first-generation camera! As for the anti CG comments, there's a reason nobody is listening. It's all been said before ad nauseum, and with better more analogous examples. Sorry.

  • May 14, 2006, 12:02 p.m. CST

    Oh... it's been said before?

    by SK909

Just like everything on every fucking board on every movie on this site has been said before. Just like every one of these stupid goddamn movies is a rehash of the same old special effects shit since May 1977.

    Whatever you say, wolfman

    by Be like water

But it's a different world to 1970s moviemaking, and the lack of dialogue in this trailer serves to actually make me nervous about this "kid" (and I ain't talking about Lois's) and the quality of the movie itself. Couple that with the heavily "readable" shot of Lex "stabbing" Supes, and I'm just a bit unsure that somebody might be pushing an "agenda." I dug Singer's previous films, but I'm not sure about this one.

...Because this movie's going to SERIOUSLY disappoint -- and very likely, underperform -- and Warner Bros. THEMSELVES don't even want anything to do with it. One teaser poster, two "trailers", a TV spot, and three lame-o "South American"/Cannes banners -- that's SOME marketing campaign...[sheesh] Oh, I forgot, the toys...which actually give me bad dreams...
