Today Will Be A Day Long Remembered! That's Not True, That's Impossible!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Finally George Lucas Kicks Ass and I can love him completely! Thank fucking God, Lucas and the power of Star Wars fandom! "Due to Overwhelming demand!" Fucking A! FUCKING A! Dear God... This is glorious!

This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD

May 03, 2006

Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy. In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. To see the trailer to the new game from LucasArts and TT Games, click here!

Being that I cannot remember anything about these movies before their 1997 remasterings, this should be an interesting experience. I've always wanted to experience these movies as the original audiences did. That being said, this is a complete milk-job. They wait two years after releasing the originals, waiting for most of the people who held out hope to cave in, and then they go and ask for more. These better be dirt-ass cheap. But even if they aren't, I'll buy them anyway and star wars will be another set that I will have multiple copies of.

    Raise your hand...

    by CatVutt

...if you did NOT see this coming. I mean, has Lucas EVER passed up a chance to make us buy the same GODDAMN things over and over again? That said, I DO like the fact that it's specifically the original "A New Hope", before it was actually called that. But...anybody notice the conspicuous absence of any form of the terms 'remastered' or 'digitally remastered' with respect to the Original Theatrical releases? Wait for the outrage, and the inevitable separate 'remastered' versions fo the films, and THEN a couple years later, the 20 DVD Boxset with all the films, every trailer ever made, action figure commercials, that old PBS documentary, The Clone Wars cartoon, and a new 'retrospective' documentary...blah blah's never going to end, folks. I'm convinced of it. This last one, of course, will occur right before holographic discs hit big, and Lucas announces the release of the Original Trilogy - Special Editions on one HVD with bonus features being the first ever release of the Deleted Scenes from all three films.

I KNEW, just KNEW, that Lucas, being a capitalist above all else, would hold the originals in reserve for the day when he had bled the masses dry for all Star Wars crapola he could. I never bought a single Star Wars DVD, either because they are the shit prequels, or because they were bastardized. Well I sure am glad I had that foresight--and I'll have the luxury of my own hypocrisy by giving Lucas my hardearned cash at last while calling him a LIAR and HYPOCRITE here--if your new DEFACED versions were so "definitive" George, how come you didn't WALK THE WALK and DESTROY them, hmmmm? I can hope just for shits and giggles that these actually OUTSELL the previous DEFACED versions, although that's extremely unlikely...

This is the real sell out.

    by Lazarus Long

I'm a bit miffed that George didn't stick to his guns. Although I had issues with the Special Edition, it seems so juvenile to let a few moments spoil a 7-hour trilogy. The updated effects (especially on ESB) more than made up for a couple misfires. The addition of McDiarmid on the DVDs was worth losing Sebastian Shaw (really, who gives a shit?). Lucas giving in to a bunch of bratty fanboy whiners is the true pathetic move here, and I don't know whether it's greed or just a soft spot, but the bottom line is that if all Lucas cared about was money, he would have released Star Wars on DVD when the medium first started. This is only the second release, people. DVDs have been around for over 10 years. He could have cashed in several times over by now. I won't be buying this Dolby 2.0 crap, as I don't need to see these films in anything less than optimum quality.

Four days after my birthday, I will own Star Wars goodness that I first saw, and loved, when I was 11 years old. My bro-in-law bought the dvd trilogy when it first came out and it was a fucking abomination, mainly because of the stupid Han/Greedo stuff. The originals are what we grew up liking, and FINALLY, that's what we get. Bravo!

So this will be the Fifth (5th!!!) time I buy this set!

    by Toby Wan

Let me count the ways. Original VHS set. Special Edition VHS set. The bootleg Original series DVD's ripped off the Laserdiscs. The DVD set I got last year. And now this set....Congratulations Mr. Lucas, I am officially your BITCH. And with this set, I have now spent more money on Star Wars media than I have on Poon Tang.(and that is saying a fucking lot)

  • May 3, 2006, 11:13 p.m. CST

    And one more thing....

    by Toby Wan

    Tired All The Time

    by BigSugar

To be frank, I think this is more trying to cut out piracy (ie. the DVD versions out there of the laserdisc). I've got no problem with Lucas wanting to correct the things he feels were wrong with the original trilogy, but isn't there something to sentiment that once a product is released to the public, it then ceases to be the property of the director, et al? I have a vivid memory of SW from my youth and the fact is that the "enhancements" that Lucas made didn't do anything to change the story (although adding the Jaba sequence back was just a bad idea and that's a fact). Shouldn't we have the choice of either in light of the fact that there is no signifigant difference in the films in the many versions? I didn't purchase the first DVD release specifically for this reason, and fanboy that I am, I have never whined about it.

  • May 3, 2006, 11:17 p.m. CST

SE Jabba's Palace and Ewok songs are inexcusable

    by George Newman

ESB definitely benefited the most from the SE treatment. When i was 6-10 years old I actually liked the movie the least. VHS quality yellow-orangish Cloud City was hideous. So i definitely appreciate what they did there. But the changes elsewhere, especially in ROTJ are very distracting and detremental to the original versions.

  • May 3, 2006, 11:23 p.m. CST

    Great news but...

    by Darth Thoth

Well, I almost can't believe it. The pain has been for so long that I'm sort of numb and desensitized. Still, this is GREAT news! I will be there. My only thing though- the video better be restored at great quality. And also, is 5.1 surround too much to ask for these days? Come on Lucasfilm. Don't y'all have a rep to uphold regarding offering the highest quality available. Oh well. This set will be pre-ordered and will eventually look good on my shelf... next to my 50 other incarnations of the trilogy. Holla!

  • May 3, 2006, 11:26 p.m. CST

    by Darth Thoth

Also, I have this sense we are only getting these not because of fan-demand but because LucasFilm is trying to get the last bit of cash out of us for Star Wars DVD stuff before HD-DVD really hits. Then, they'll be able to charge us again for the special editions, theatricals, prequels, original trilogy, clone wars cartoon, etc.

  • May 3, 2006, 11:30 p.m. CST

You poor beggars, you poor Pavlovian mutts...

    by Laserbrain

You've *got* buy them again, do you? Nobody forced you to buy them the first time. If you've got the Special Editions on DVD then you are most likely satisfied with them. You voted with your purchase and you got what you wanted and deserved. If customer demand is prompting this new release then we old stonewallers are getting, finally, what *we* deserve. I never spent a red-cent on those SE DVDS, wouldn't have owned them or watched them for free and in a short while I'll *have* those Original Editions *and* my self-respect. In fact, I may just hold out a titch longer for those HD versions which will undoubtedly arrive with great fanfare a year or two from now. Yeah, maybe I will. I can do it. You can do it too if you try. Just Say No. Or Yes. Just make a choice and stand by it and don't whine when you get what you asked for. HA HA HA HA! I get MY Star Wars back! Oh, glorious day.... Oh, jeez, I'm getting light headed...

Shoulda given us this choice back in 2004...

    by iron pills

This was one of the things that made me fall in love with the dvd format. The options. You wanted to watch the movie full screen, you got it (even though I never did, neither will I, ever choose to see the film panned and scanned)want to see it in widescreen, you have that choice also. Want to watch the original theatrical cut, it's there. Wanna watch the extended director's cut, you have a branching feature that includes the cut scenes, a la Terminator 2. Not really sure if this feature was taken advantage of more often, I'm not sure. Would love to know if there are other discs with this option. Regardless, it kinda pisses me off how they choose to split a movie in two, with a theatrical cut, and the xtreme, unrated director's cut. You want exclusive, behind the scenes? Sorry, you have to get the super deluxe edition. A shame when all of this stuff used to be crammed into one, 2 disc set at a decent price. I'm all for nostalgia, but with the clarity of dvd, the original movies are just gonna look "reaalllyy" dated. I know, what really matters is the story. It's just that people who may not have seen the OT in a while, may be in for a rude awakening, now that they can watch these back to back with the 2004 editions. Personally, my buying of Star Wars movies on this generation format are done. Now, on hd-dvd or blu-ray, whoever comes out on top, I may think about it...

  • May 3, 2006, 11:39 p.m. CST

    Re: ShiftyEyedDog

    by Little Beavis

Right on my brother... if these whiney little purists want the movie how it was originally presented, well they're fucking gonna get the picture without the digital clean-ups plus the donkey-ass 2.0 stereo. You cannot have a custom trilogy you geeks-- it's either going to be in it's true original form or the special edition-- now deal with it; hope you don't gag too hard while you're choking down Lucas' cock.

  • May 3, 2006, 11:54 p.m. CST

With this, can you make your own version that you like?

    by Kraken

I mean, how hard would it be to take both the dvds, lay the 5.1 soundtrack from the special ed over the original footage. Or even better just put both movies into an editing program and then restore the SE with the original scenes that you like and leave the restored scenes in where they didn't change anything in the SE drastically. It's CUSTOM Star Wars!! And as long as you don't release it, then I don't see why it would be illegal to do so if you buy the set because it comes with both versions. Either way man, it's the ORIGINAL cut on DVD!! I can live with Dolby 2.0! I can finally buy Star Wars on DVD (yes, I held out, I haven't bought the SE on DVD)

THIS is why I never bought the DVD's!!!

    by IamNumber1

I KNEW GEORGIE PORGIE WOULD DO THIS EVENTUALLY! To anyone who held out this long and called his bluff, I salute you. I was seriously willing to never watch star wars again because of what he did to the original trilogy. I do believe that an artists (ha!) work is his even after it is released to the people, but that's why I would not buy the DVD's. I still am going to hold out until I hear a few reviews of the DVD's, just in case they are not 100% untouched. I would suck if George released the original trilogy just to see Han still shooting second. The final raping of the childhood.

    by CatVutt

I really doubt anybody's bitching about these finally getting released. What's annoying is that, if you want them, as of now anyway, it looks like you've gotta pay for yet another copy of the SE DVDs just to get them. I hate that shit. And no, Lucas ain't the only one guilty of that kind of crap, but it is truly annoying. I'll wait to see what the full deal is before I decide. There's always Netflix, rip and burn.

He must be tried before the intergalactic war crimes tribunal. Han is a murderer. There's no doubt about this from a legal standpoint. I demand he be arrested and put on trial!

    This is fantastic news.

    by Cotton McKnight

I always knew that there would be another incarnation of Star Wars on DVD (presumably all 6 released as a box set), so I don't mind this much. I got the first ones as a Christmas present and I will buy these myself. Oh and to the one asking about it saying episode 4, it actually only started saying that in 1978, during the re-release. I am not sure when it said "A new hope" but I do know that much. Just to give ya'll some perspective, I was 2 months past my third birthday when Star Wars came out in 1977, and I went absolutely BANANAS over it. It has affected everything I have done in my life. If I ever have kids, I am going to show them that movie around the same age because I think its the perfect time- you are too young to really understand it, but you are old enough to be completely blown away. As such, I dont have the cynicism that some of the people who were older had.. (you know the 11 year olds who saw that movie in 77).

trilogy (unaltered)-vhs, thx'd widescreen trilogy-vhs (unaltered), special edition-vhs, special edition-dvd, now trilogy (unaltered)-dvd. For some reason, my first ever copy of Return of the Jedi's audio was screwed up so that the everything played loud except the voices. So I'm pretty much doing all this so I can hear "It's alright, trust me" instead of "It's alright, I can see a little better now". Some might deem this purchase "wasteful".

STAR WARS is like WIZARD of OZ

    by half vader

The original version is a part of modern culture (not just pop-culture) and an historical document in the true sense of the word. Even though he seems to be doing it begrudgingly ("the pioneering, if dated" - how many of his own FX geniuses did he piss off with THAT one) and the cynical side of me says that the 2004 versions are bundled with the originals so George can say, "Look. I was RIGHT. The new ones are MUCH better.", at the end of the day we've GOT them. Even if it's for a few months until George takes his ball again and goes home, all pouty-like.________________So stop whinging. Han has a character arc again. The redundant scenes are gone. We can see it in all its glory, warts and all. And by warts I mean Jedi.____________Another cynical side of me says this may be used by Fox as their "Killer App." for Blu-Ray to win the hi-def war, depending on whether George makes them wait for the 30th anniversay or not. Or maybe next year is for the stereoscopic 3-d versions. We'll see I guess.______________Finally - 1080i? I???? Are you guys on crack?

    by Flim Springfield

so much as the timing. I have no problem with Peter Jackson releasing a regular and special edition of his movies, but release them at the same time! (As many other films are doing now.) Releasing the regular first is just a way to grab as much money from the hardcore fans who can't wait to watch the film at home. The best part was when ROTK first came out, since everyone was catching on to the pattern by then, Jackson hinted that the extended edition "might not be ready by Christmas." Haha, as if!

Through the Force, the future I see....

    by Liberty Valance

Regardless of how many times Lucas attempts to placate his detractors, they will always find something to whine their little twats off about. If these discs lack commentaries or special features, they'll bitch. If the image and sound quality aren't up to par with the SEs, they'll bitch. If they never see the light of day on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, they'll bitch. If they don't get re-released with the inevitable 15-disc definitive mega-set, they'll bitch. And if all else fails, they'll decry the prequels to their dying day. I suppose anonymously disparaging a public figure who's actually achieved success in life is empowering. So tomorrow at whatever demeaning, irrelevant, menial task you call a job, be sure to think up lots of witty jabs at Lucas to impress the online community. Jagoffs.

We all knew that eventually George would release the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy. He is a businessman first and foremost. And OF COURSE they will have restored picture and sound. I want to see what I saw in the theaters from 1977 to 1983, and the film prints looked great then, so they should be looking great for the DVD release. Dolby 2.0? Hell yes! The 5.1 is shitty! You can't even hear John Williams brilliant fanfare when the X-Wings are first attacking the Death Star. I'm really not liking the original theatrical cuts being released with the special editions. The special editions have already been released, so it would be nice to have an Original Star Wars Trilogy Box Set with just the original theatrical cuts. And to the best of my knowledge, "Episode IV A New Hope" wasn't added onto Star Wars until the 1981 re-release. The Empire Strikes Back actually had Episode V before Star Wars had an Episode IV. This timing should hardly be a surprise either, being as this is the last chance for Lucasfilm to squeeze money out of the DVD format.

Truth be told i wouldn't mind if they had a new hope in the crawl as i do think that is what most people remember and some of the enhanced effects shots were genuine improvements but han shooting first and none of the dodgy colouring means i'll have to get the origional. Empire strikes back is less essential but i'll probably be tempted to get return of the jedi

  • May 4, 2006, 3:59 a.m. CST

Oh and i'm hoping these things will have ALL of the dialogue as the remastered vhs had several bits of missing dialogue (most notabley close the blast doors but there were other bits and pieces missing).

    Too true, Bones.

    by Laserbrain

The escape from Cloud City was edited and scored to perfection in the original. The re-edit was so inane, so arbitrary, so artless. Anyone with a sensitivity to competent film craft could see that TESB:SE was a DEBACLE. A debacle we can now happily put behind us.

  • May 4, 2006, 4:14 a.m. CST

  • May 4, 2006, 4:33 a.m. CST

    by The hoff

When i said empire was less essential i meant that the dvd special edition didn't have any flaws that would require me to get the origional as opposed to a new hope and return of the jedi both of which have flaws that annoy me in one way or another. The fact that i already own the special editions and the OT is coming out on individual dvds (as opposed to a box set) means i have less reason to get empire in its origional form. It is the best of the trilogy though.

The real reason behind these DVDs.

    by johnny crunch

Fall 2006 is the last major push for studios to put out their movies on regular DVD before Blue Ray and HD DVD take over. George sees this as a way to make more money in the original DVD format before he teases us for years with the Blueray or HD DVD discs of the "originals". I also heard from a reliable person close to Lucasfilm that the source material, "that they exhaustively searched through the archives", is from the non-anamorphic 1995 laserdiscs master. They can do better than this. I also love how Lucas changes his mind (again) about never releasing the originals because it wasn't the versions he intended us to see. Note to Lucasfilm...give us the Star Wars sequels and not some crappy spinoff show starring Wilford Brimley.

  • May 4, 2006, 6:39 a.m. CST

    by DoubleFantasy

Personally i don't really think it's necessary to release the original versions. i think the prequels and SE versions are fine cause I look at it from a story point of view rather than who shoots who first and what special effects are what and all that. Star Wars is just fun but what gets me is the sheer amount of pathetic moaning that is the soul of AICN. If you don't want the original's in your collection - DO NOT BUY THEM!!! Stop moaning and go about your day. Lucas is making money like every single person here would. They belong to him and he can do whatever the hell he wants to these movies. They belong to him - he financed them, thought of them and paid people to collaborate with him. If you want to make a better movie series go ahead but give the guy a break. It really is so so so sad to hear all you bitchy, pathetic, lonely losers out there trying to verbally insult someone who has made billions of dollars through his own talent. IF YOU DONT WANT THE ORIGINALS ON DVD - DO NOT BUY THEM. IT'S REALLY REALLY THAT SIMPLE. STOP MOANING, PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND SEE THE NICE THINGS IN LIFE. You all need a good shot of Buddhadharma up your asses. (PS - DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A WAR GOING ON? FOCUS YOUR ENERGY ON THAT IF YOU WANT TO BITCH AND MOAN ABOUT SOMETHING!!)

    The problem is...

    by Moozay?

when the DVD set was released in 2004, Lucasfilm said several times that THIS was it - that George no longer saw the original versions as relevant and they would never be released. So it was a choice between either a slightly disfigured star wars set or nothing at all - so most people chose the former. At least when the LOTR was released, they admitted that the special edition was coming later, so people had the choice. Now I'm no Lucas hater - I have the 2004 DVDs and I'll be sticking with those but I can understand why some people might be aggrieved. Well before the 2004 DVD release fans were campaigning for the original versions so to say "Oh we just realised now that there's fan pressure" is crap. And remember guys - next year is the 30th anniversary so there is almost certainly going to be another box set - probably all 6 films with CGi yoda in Phantom Menace. Ah fuck it - we're all Lucas' bitches at the end of the day

This should've been how the last DVD set was released. Can't wait for the all-new Saga Collection featuring all six movies to come out with new material on it. There's no way that two years ago they didn't plan to release the originals, too, though their PR crap has always been "These new editions are the true versions." Yes, movie people always do this, yes we should've seen it coming, etc, etc, etc... But screw that. Sorry, George, I can't buy this version, too. My ass is still sore.

I'll be happy to buy these and put them on the shelf next to the others. My only gripe (and its a small one) is that I wish the second disc contained the "making of" specials for each corresponding film instead of the 2004 versions of the films. But that is a small gripe. I'm happy just to get a copy of the original cuts that isn't transfered from LD.

I myself was never really adament about these getting released. I wanted them, but am perfectly content with the SEs. I've always thought the SEs were far superior (in almost every way). Who the fuck wants to see the old Emperor scene anymore? Still, as a huge SW fan, and one who appreciates film history, I will definitely be getting these. I forgot to mention that part of the reason I don't feel "Lucas raped my childhood" is that I am 23, and only partly grew up with the original SW films. To be honest, my interest peaked when I was 15 and the SEs were released in '97. Those versions were the first ones I "loved." Still, I can see why the older fans who got to see ANH and TESB in theaters are more attached to those. Rightly so.

    SE question

    by mjbok1

There is one thing that has bothered me about the DVD release. Has anyone noticed that Vader's light saber is more pink than red. It is especially noticable in ROTJ. At first I thought it was my TV, but it looks that way on all of my TV's. Anyone else notice this?

Second best is Star Wars, then THX-1138. 70's Lucas was a visionary director. As he became obsessed with technology, he lost his creative drive to actually make well-acted emotional films.......

I'm in the same boat as you man. I wasnt even born yet when they came out in the theaters, but I did see them in 97 when they came out again. That was awesome. I honestly dont care which version I have. I actually prefer the special editions because they complete the story for me. I honestly didnt flip my lid when Hayden was inserted in ROTJ. I was fine with it. I can see why others are upset about it, but personally, I didnt even notice a difference with the han solo shooting first thing.

  • May 4, 2006, 12:06 p.m. CST

    Hilarious talkback.

    by DocPazuzu

Good points and nice, imaginative vitriol from both sides. I was hoping to see CocoLopez weigh in. Although he's nuttier than fuck, his anti-Lucas rants are among the most colorful on record. I'm not going to pretend that I'm not going to buy these DVDs, even though my LD rips are pretty damn good, but I -- like Roland -- have to confess a less-than-overjoyed reaction to the news. My SW receptors haven't been fried, but I think a SW fuse or two has blown during the past couple of years and I just can't get excited about new audiovisual product in this vein. Ho hum....

  • May 4, 2006, 12:35 p.m. CST

    by la_sith

Seriously, fucking GET OVER IT. With a few exceptions (Han shooting first, the horrible "Jedi Rocks"), the SE is fine and makes the entire saga feel a whole lot more fluid with the visual and sound improvements. Will I buy this? Sure. I am a sucker like the rest of you. But 90% of the changes made to the originals work and make complete and total sense in the grand story. I'm actually a little bit bummed that LFL is copping to the cry-babies (Harry, you're no exception). But in the end, Lucas has the last laugh. You whiney bitches all still have to buy the 2004 SE when you buy your precious originals. "It is unavoidable. It is your DESTINY." Ah haaaaa

    by Tall_Boy

MAybe. I dunno. Hell, I think some older movies come out with mono mixes. And it'll still have a nice transfer, its a freakin Lucasfilm product after all.

  • May 4, 2006, 1:09 p.m. CST

    Well there goes another $45

    by Sci_Fi_Wasabe

or whatever they end up costing. Yea I bought the remastered original trilogy DVD set, i have the 1997 remastered VHS (with the first crappy Jabba CGI), and I'm pretty sure I have episode 1 on VHS pre-remaster (the one with Leonard Maltin interviewing his plaidness). And it will be completely impossible for me to resist buying this set. As has been said here already, "Damn you Lucas" and "Well Played", indeed. I really didn't think Lucas in his revisionist perfectionism would ever allow these to be released. He keeps messing with them the way a plastic surgery addict keeps getting stuff done that isn't necessary. But I'm not complaining about these being released and am really glad to have the chance to get these. Although, would it have been so hard to just clean up/replace/improve the special effects where needed without changing the original tone/intent of the movies with people shooting first, young jedi ghosts, and dozens of robots and dewbacks in the backgound of every scene. (By the way, if Georgie does that, count me in for another $45).

The SE Jabba's Palace musical number and SE ewok song ruin that movie. I was watching the intro's to the SE VHS set the other day, and Lucas said, "Back when we were making the film, we couldn't really do what we wanted. But with technology we have now, we could finally go back and do that MUSICAL NUMBER we always wanted." Good God. What awful vision that man has at times.

  • May 4, 2006, 1:24 p.m. CST

    It's BOTH

    by Abhimanyu

So the people who win are the ones who did not buy the SE versions on DVD really. Now they get both versions for 30 bucks. You want cleaned up effects, 5.1 sound, watch disc 2. Want Han to shoot first? Watch Disc 1. This is actually all right for people who will be buying these movies on DVD for the first time.

I totally agree. For the most part, the changes were a big improvement. Yeah Jedi Rocks doesn't rock at all, and Has shooting second is stupid as hell, but I'd rather watch the SE almost any day (except the day I watch the originals--I'm getting them too). Is it so hard to have both and enjoy both?

  • May 4, 2006, 1:52 p.m. CST

  • May 4, 2006, 1:57 p.m. CST

Anyone here actually still believe in Lucas?

    by AnAgentOfEvil

Just curious. Does anyone here actually believe Lucas is not doing this for the money, but that he really cares about the fans? He's resisted for years, and while I don't think he should have, it's because he really doesn't believe they are the real versions of the OT. And the guy's a fucking millionaire. He doesn't need 30 dollars from so pathetic whining low-life. He does something great and half the people are complaining. Should've been a great day for SW fans, but it's pretty sad. Fuck this place.

  • Why yes, chrth, there is. It's available on YouTube, and it shows Colossus flinging Wolverine at a Sentinel! Wow, why wouldn't they talk about that here, isn't it cool news? Well, of course it is, but since when has this site ever been on top of a news story that wasn't a fake picture/script? Too true, too true. I guess the fact that it's probably the Danger Room reduces its relevant, but it's still a nifty scene. Shame we can't discuss it here. Indeed.

I wouldn't be suprised if they don't even consider this a major profit move and produce these OT discs on the cheap. Until the inevitable Blu/Ray editions are on the street, I'll remain satisfied with watching and listening to my THX remastered VHS copy of the OT upscaled through my Marantz receiver in Dolby Pro Logic IIx out of Klipsch Reference Series speakers. by giger167

If he was doing it for the money wouldn't he just sell the rights to Fox and they'd make a film every few years and leach the film to death like they're doing with Aliens/predator and he'd make trillions as opposed the billions he's already made. Isn't it common sense to assume that in carefully releasing the films and resisting for many years making the sequels that he actually cares about the films he makes. If someone could explain how releasing the original films for a limited time by fan request (and versions he wasn't keen to release at all) he is selling out ? I may be laboring the point but to me if he was the money grabbing fucker most of you paint him to be we'd have seen a lot more Star Wars movies released. Oh and Sith rocked lol.

    branching version

    by stvnhthr

It will be cool to have official releases, I transferred my laserdisc copies to dvd years ago (both original and Special Edition versions.) Now I have three different versions and I would love a single disc with branching features which would allow me to choose which version of a scene I would like to watch. For instance I want Han to shoot first, but no Jabba scene in ANH. Maybe for blu-ray, that would be the ultimate edition.

  • May 4, 2006, 7:25 p.m. CST

"Here's your fucking money, I hope you choke on it."

    by rivercb

I wish we could start a Thank You petition website with that in the headline.

    Still getting screwed.

    by DarthCorleone

The biggest ripoff is that they are being packaged with the Special Editions. I already bought those! The originals should be packaged by themselves. I don't mind paying for the old versions, but why must I buy those revisionist versions AGAIN? We're talking double the price-point here. Greedy bastards.

  • May 4, 2006, 7:52 p.m. CST

stvnhthr, did I read that right??

    by hollywoodsummers

You want a branching version of the films and you would actually CHOOSE to watch Han shoot first?? Please man, step away from the crack pipe. You've got to be the only person alive (besides the Fat Bastard, Lucas himself) to choose that option. Can I get a Amen to that shit!?

  • First' ... I mean whoopdedoo he shot a bounty hunter when the b-h wasn't looking, ooh, such a real maaaan. Losers.

Make your own star wars movie - from BLAMO!

    by Orionsangels

With the all new branching version of star wars. you add the scene. new or old. it's up to you! you and your family will have hours of fun. (han shoots first) oh dad. I want greedo shoots first. (It's Jabba!) Now you see him, now you don't. Uh oh, look out. here comes boba fett. Hey where did he go? pretty sneaky sis.

  • May 4, 2006, 9:04 p.m. CST

    by IamNumber1

Han shot first because he was a badass who didn't care about anyone but himself. When he doubled back for Luke at the end it's such a shock because we know, from that one scene of him shooting first, that it's not in his character to do something like that. In the new version, not only does han look like a wuss for not shooting first, but Greedo (and Jabba's entire gang for that matter) looks totally incompetent for not being able to shoot someone at point blank range. Anyways, that is all

It just seemed this talkback was in need of one of those. I can't believe after all the bitching, people are still complaining about the OG releases because they aren't Hi-Def. Get over it bitches, this is the only fan service your getting and you can take that to the bank.

I laugh at all of you who "bought" Laser Disc OT rips..

    by Schmiggy JK

We are in the modern digital age, with broadband galore, and you people are paying for illegal bootlegs that are readily available online? Sad sad. I snatched up the laser disc rips back in early 04 when they said these originals would never be released, just for the archives. And already having those, and the SE dvd's, i dont see a reason to buy these dvds, to get things I have already. Now if the originals were released in their own set, or in the "master super duper deluxe apartment in the sky version" I would get them that way. But if any one needs the LD rips, hit me up. Ill sell them cheaper then ebay, lol.

DVD now, High Definition DVD later.

    by Lezbo Milk

I just realized that there is an entire shelf dedicated to SW in my entertainment center. Now with the inevitability of a high definition format around the corner (HD or Blu-Ray, I could really give two shits which), I'm going to have to buy everything again. That kinda pisses me off, but it will help in one respect: I can consolidate the collection. I'm sure he will come out with The O/T as one set. The SE as another, and then the prequels as a third. So three box sets total. I can deal with that I guess. Anyone need any DVD drink costers?

  • May 5, 2006, 12:40 a.m. CST

    One HD set please.

    by Hot Carl

On the contrary Milk. I think one set ought to cover it. The new HD formats could hold the O/T and the SE versions, so he could do one ultimate ball busting set, and save a shitload of space on my entertainment unit too.

    Doc Strange,

    by IamNumber1

the reason why everybody's pissed off is 1. We can and will complain about anything and everything and 2. The OT is being released in a sneaky underhanded way to make more money out of the fans. Now that there are no other ways to release star wars on DVD (except for in HD DVD in the coming years), they finally release the OT because we all want it. I guess it's too much to ask for the OT, an apology, and a chance to punch George Lucas in the face for the sodomy

  • May 5, 2006, 2:22 a.m. CST

    by Doc_Strange

Yeah, well just think, a world without Star Wars. Be glad you're living in times like this to take greatness for granted. Me, I'm quite happy with my special editions and prequel trilogy on my 50"" plasma display.

I want deleted scenes! rare behind the scenes stuff!

    by Orionsangels

Extras, like deleted scenes, with Luke and his friends Cammy & Fixer. Luke's convo with Biggs. The sandstorm scene from ROTJ. Digitally restored them. That strange short film starring warwick davis as wickett. where he visits, mark hamill, harrison ford, carrie fisher in a hotel in full ROTJ costumes. Why isn't that on DVD? You know all this stuff has to be in Lucas's vaults.

  • May 5, 2006, 3:55 a.m. CST

    by Orionsangels

We should also be able to see that rod stick holding the exploding tie fighter after wedge flies thru it saving Luke, much clearer now. That fuzzy blur under the landspeeder will sparkle on DVD. hehe, i'm just be sarcastic. I wanna own the unaltered versions. It's just funny how some hardcore fans act like none of this is in the movie. That the effects are perfect. Nostaligia can do that to ya.

Ah we all predicted this, that's why I waited.

    by Regicidal_Maniac

I didn't buy the bastardise versions, I wanted the historical document not an updated version. These films are a product of their time and noone involved has any business being ashamed of the truly awesome work committed to celluloid and offered to the public in 1977, 1980 and 1983. I have NO problem with filmmakers updating the effects of their films if they see fit as log as the originals are made available. See, now that Jaws is ot on DVD I have no problem with Spielberg releasing an updated 30th anniversary edition version into cinemas next year with a CGI Bruce the shark. Having held out for this very release I will happily buy these to replace my bootlegs, my only gripe is that you can bet your butt that Lucas will do his darndest to make sure that in comparison to the remastered fucked versions these versions will look and sound just a tad better than video but I don't care as long as I never have to hear Temuera Morrison instead of Jason Wingreen as Boba Fett or see hayden Christiansen's smirking mug in place of Sebastion Shaw's serene face of redemption. Ahhh.

I do so love the righteous indignation talkbacking geeks spew about Star Wars. "I'll never spend a penny on the SE DVDs!!! I DEMAND the original edition!" "Lucas is raping us for more money, just like he and Jar Jar raped my chuildhood!" Fucking hilarious! I mean, yes, this is yet another edition of the DVDs coming out, but nobody MUST shell out the $$$ to purchase it. Of COURSE Lucas is hoping to make more money off of this new release. Duh. You think he should just put it out there for free, as a loving thank you to fans? Please. And while I would have liked to have a legal copy of the original versions, you can bet I bought the special editions when they came out. They've been used to recruit a whole new generation of fans. The nieces and nephews really don't care about the differences between the versions... they just love the moviews, cause they're kids. Once they become jaded teenage fanboys and girls, they can make the decision about which one they like best. Then they can jack into the interweb v5.0 with their cortical implants, and bitch about the black splotches on the Emperors face... as the next generation of bitter whiuning bastards. Meanwhile, Lucas will continue to sleep on a mattress full of cash, in a house built from cash.

I swore for years that they had changed it from the version I saw as a kid. It was only recently that I realised that I had the power of the internet at my fingertips and looked it up to confirm it. And is it a coincidence that this news was released on Star Wars day? "May the fourth be with you" and all that. I guess some wise ass on this talkback has already made that joke, I just can't be bothered to check.

You do know the difference between Han and Greedo right? Greedo is the green one. Han is the guy with the big Wookie companion. I don't think I'm the only one who prefers Han shooting first (apparently most Star War fans do-we aren't all smoking crack, we can't afford the habbit, all or our money goes to Hasbro), and Lucas apparently prefers Greedo shooting first-that is why he changed it from the original.

You guys are missing the point. The question is whether the mix will be the *same* 2.0 as the original 1977 theatrical release, or a redux of the botched 2004 mix. The best scenario (which we won't get) would be three alternate audio tracks-- original 2.0, original 70mm six-track surround (basically 5.1), and the original general-release MONO MIX (remember, most theatres didn't have stereo setups back then), which had many subtle differences, including a different actress voicing Aunt Beru.

    class action suit against lucas?

    by Calico Pete

after all, he lied about never releasing the OOT, causing us some of us idjits to shell out the money for the SEs, which otherwise we wouldn't have. Isn't that bait n' switch? False advertising? Entrapment? Some other term for "giving us grounds for a lawsuit?" C'mon. Who's with me? While we're at it we can sue lucasfilm for the prequel trailers, which were like using candy to bait a kid into your van and having your way with him. Think of it: 30 years ago we were primed by the OT, then 30 years later we were helpless to resist those trailers and helplessly sucked into watching something that emotionally traumatized us exactly *because* of the prepping we got 30 yrs ago! In other words, it was all a plan set in motion in the 70s to traumatize us in the 00s! Lucas is nothing if not patient. But why? Why did he want us traumatized? So we could soothe our trauma with the salve of the OOT DVDs! There's no way a jury would let him off. I'm telling ya, we'll at least get a free set of DVDs (with a special extra of lucasfilm prexy Jim Ward giving us the finger).

As long as it didn't include the Prequel Trilogy. Or the Special Editions. And why would anyone want the Luke and Biggs scene added into Star Wars? The scene not only sucks, but there is no reason for it in the narrative. The main story is following the stolen plans of the Death Star. It doesn't make one bit of sense to introduce Luke until those plans reach him. Which is what the editors did, and since they deservedly one an Oscar, lets keep it that way. It's sort of like having the Jabba scene in Star Wars. You have a really cool scene(non-special edition) with Greedo telling Han that every Bounty Hunter in the galaxy is looking for him dead or alive. So why have the scene with Jabba going over the EXACT same exposition, but taking every single bit of menace out because he lets Han go? He hardly even threatens him! Not to mention the fact that not knowing who, or more specifically, WHAT Jabba is was a big deal to the overall trilogy.

Hahahahaha All you suckers who caved and bought SE dvds

    by Walterego

Can eat it now. I have been perfectly happy with my VHS Star Wars tapes these past few years and now my patience has paid off. I knew Lucas' greed would eventually bear fruit. Now I need only wait for the release of the Blade Runner dvd with Harrison Ford's narration. Sooner or later someone in LA will want to take my money, they always do.

He is worse than all those other piece of shit whore movie people. He does everything he can to rape the movie-going/buying public and all you assholes keep lining up and bending over for some more. Fuck that shit. I won't buy these DVDs on general principal. Meanwhile, all of you will have bought the VHS tapes twice, the DVDs twice, and will soon buy the HD-DVD/Blue-Ray sets.

  • May 7, 2006, 9:43 p.m. CST

    I'll buy them..

    by movieman742

I also have the dvd box set that is out now. I am willing to buy the new editions just for the fact that they are NEW EDITIONS. I don't feel cheated. If you are willing to spend the money then it doesn't matter how many you buy. And I will be there when they come out on Blu-Ray also, just let me know the time and place.

Where's the Oscar for Howard the Duck?

    by frankentron5000

Now that i've got a 4-year-old son, I'm experiencing the entire Star Wars Saga (both old-trilogy and new-trilogy) in constant daily bombardment. The one thought that goes through my head is that George Lucas was the luckiest bastard on the planet. You realize the technological limitations, the red tape and input from designers and cohorts are what made the original Star Wars the beautiful film that it is. As the series continues, you see the original care and concepts all fall apart, mainly due to the increasing control of Lucas over his product. Granted, Empire improves on New Hope in the way that ALIENS improved on Ridley Scott's original ALIEN; by adding fast action, tight dialougue and deepened characters. But it kicks the chair out from under itself with the cliffhanger ending which should have shown a big dollar sign floating in space as Lando and Chewie fly off to rescue Han. You knew at that very moment that the third film would suck. And it did. I can still watch New Hope from beginning to end. I am drawn in by the beautiful camera work, especially during closeups of the actors, when I realize the care that each person was putting into their performance. The rest of the films are merely tolerable by skipping to the action sequences. This is my son's favorite viewing method, also. Star Wars raised the bar in Hollywood. But it wasn't because of Lucas' genius. It was because of his team that took his odd little ideas and turned them into a universe of escape that was accessible for everyone.

this would be plastered all over the mainstream media as the disgusting exploitation it is. Lucas should be vilified for this.

you stated that "jabba scene" criticism perfectly. i was just explaining the same thing to someone last weekend. before i went through the "star wars fan anonymous" 12-step program, i couldn't talk about the prequels without winding up trembling and watching patches of my hair falling out. now i'm recovering.

so then what does this do to....

    by tensticks

episodes 7, 8 & 9? I'm positive I'm not the only one to observe this. But really, Lucas has been ADAMANT that he would NEVER release those "old, inferior, incomplete" versions on DVD. And now he is. And he's been adamant that he will "never make episodes 7, 8 and 9".... Are you pondering what I'm pondering? As someone once said, there are ALWAYS possibilities....

tensticks, just think "follow the money".

    by one9deuce

George Lucas has done nothing but contradict himself since the release of Star Wars. It really is kind of sad. He went from a maverick/independent filmmaker that was making brilliant films, to a corporate executive. He keeps talking about these low-budget, small, and personal films he is going to do, but he also said he was going to do those after Return of the Jedi. Twenty three YEARS ago. He isn't. He is the head of a corporation that provides a lot of jobs for sound editors/designers at Skywalker Sound, computer graphic artists at ILM, and game programers at LucasArts. All under the umbrella of Lucasfilm. And the engine that drives Lucasfilm is Star Wars. Period. Star Wars is responsible for creating Lucasfilm, and Star Wars is responsible for sustaining Lucasfilm. Believe this statement: There will be more Star Wars feature films. It is an inevitability. The Prequel Trilogy has no real story. It really doesn't, yet it made lots and lots of money. Because the general public doesn't care. They don't scrutinize films, that is why crappy summer blockbusters continue to make money, and also continue to suck. They don't HAVE to be good. Another Star Wars trilogy in 15 years would infuse Lucasfilm with enough cash to run for another 15 years, and provide a platform for new video games, toys, and merchandise. My best friend for 20 years HATES fantasy films. Doesn't like Star Wars, hates The Matrix, hates The Lord of the Rings etc. I'm not sure why were friends actually, just kidding, but when Episode 3 came out he called me and said "Let's go see that." I nearly fell out of my chair. I wasn't even sure if I was going to see it in the theater because the Prequel Trilogy is so bad, so I asked him why he even wanted to see it being as he hated those kind of films, and he replied "Well it's going to be the last Star Wars ever in the theater isn't it? That's what the commercials were saying, I thought I should see it." A slick bit of marketing by Lucasfilm. And total bullshit. Everyone of us at AICN heard that we would never see the original theatrical cuts on video. How many times have we heard that? Yet here they come in September. Like I stated above, or more accurately what Deepthroat in All the Presiden't Men stated: "Follow the money."

So far, haven't spent a cent on any SW dvd's. Now I can finally get the OT the way they are supposed to be. My only complaint is that they include the new fucked-with versions as well. I'd rather not even have them in my house.
