DVD news & animated TARZAN movie trailer seen

Published at:  Oct 18, 1998 3:40:58 PM CDT

Glen here…

Not sure how much of this info is already out there, but I wanted to make sure all the bases got covered.
The following message just came in from COUCH POTATO. Some DVD news, and a snippet of information about the trailer to Disney’s forthcoming animated TARZAN feature.

I agree with everything Couch Potato says about TARZAN, by the way. From what I’ve seen it should be quite good. I haven’t liked any Disney animation since THE LION KING, and thought *that* was only fair. But TARZAN? Well, TARZAN may be the real deal.

Here’s Couch potato’s message:

Hello, friends! This is the first time I’ve ever contacted you, and this may
all be old news for you, but Ill pass it on anyway. I work for a movie store
(part of a large chain) and this weekend attended a large convention at which
we heard from many studio representatives. A few items of interest:

- X-Files on DVD February 9th - confirmed. (Glen Note - Couch Potato is referring to the feature film).

- Star Wars on DVD - Fox HOPES to release them next fall, between Aug and Oct.

- Back to the Future Spec Edition DVD (and VHS) in first half of '99.(Glen Note - this is, more specifically, a "collector's edition". "Special" denotes changes, etc. - which aren't happening to the best of my knowledge...)

- Saw new trailer for Disney's Tarzan. This is the big one - it had no
dialogue at all, just Phil Collins singing the pop version of one of his songs
from the soundtrack, showing snippets of him recording and goofing off,
inter-cut with ASTOUNDING footage (much of it work-in-progress) of the animated
film.

This looks like it may be Disney's best film since The Lion King.
Absolutely awesome! The animation is clean, beautiful, and well-designed,
getting back to a more standard style after the Pocahontas / Hercules/ Mulan
experimental stylistic phase they went through. The song was great, although
I am interested to hear the film version with characters' voices. I dont know
what else to tell you...I’m ready to shell out my money NOW!… Couch Potato

I don't want to hear Tarzan sing

    by paladinken

If Tarzan or any other animal in the movie starts to sing, I will no longer watch any more Disney animated movies. Why do they think that every single movie has to be a musical?
I didn't even like the Lion King because Disney stole that idea from Japan's Kimba the White Lion.
Disney better not screw up the dubbing for the masterpiece Mononoke Hime or I'm going to hold Mickey Mouse hostage.

    Have a nice day

Back to the Future Spec ED?

    by inspector

Im interested in the special features on this disc. I have heard NOTHING from any other sources so I have to question the validity of this DVD. It would be great though!

    the importance of DIVX

    by dr stephen r beavis

This is an addendum to the post mentioning DIVX. Possibly some of you may not know about DIVX and its benefits. DIVX is the new A/V boon to Hollywood Nazis, enviromental terrorists, the pedophiles in marketing, and the opponents of film preservation. Do not buy DIVX. Do not allow anyone else to buy DIVX. If anyone wants a simple explanation just tell them DIVX causes cancer. DIVX was developed jointly by the Hollywood studio system, the Ku Klux Klan, Hamas, and retired Iraqi chemical weapons researchers. I should know, I'm David Geffen. Write to me c/o Dreamworks.

    Clarification on DVDs

    by couch potato

Couch Potato here...The X-Files Imentioned is the feature film. No details yet as to its contents, but early word is it will be a "special edition." No plans at this time to release the series, however Paramount is looking for input as to the possibility of Trek:Next Gen on DVD. How many episodes per disc 2? 4? Re: Back to Future, Universal is continuing their anniversary series (Animal House, Amer Graffiti, Sting) to include BTF on video, and the recent cooperation of Amblin permits the DVD day-and-date release, no details on content yet, I'll keep you updated...One more note: Ghostbusters will be rereleased to theaters in 99 by Columbia/TriStar, so look for a DVD Spec. Edition late next year

Back to the Future Collector's Editions

    by jason brian chapa

I think what you mean, Couch Potato, is Collector's Edition. That's the name of Universal's high dollar, high extra series of discs. Will all 3 be CEs? That's $35x3=$105. Ouch!!!

    Universal DVD's

    by couch potato

Mr. Chapa, thanks for the input. My mind slipped, as I was thinking that the last 3 or 4 Collectors editions have been part of their new ongoing anniversary series(Graffiti, House, Sting).

    x-files in february?

    by tonic

Why do we have to wait until February to get X-Files on DVD? One of the main reasons that laser discs failed was because by the time a movie was released on LD, everyone had already rented the movie and/or purchased it on VHS. In order for DVD to succeed, the studios need to start releasing their movies on DVD the same day that they come out on VHS. A few, like New Line, already do, but most are releasing them months after they've already been out on VHS. Most people, myself not included, will buy them on VHS when they come out and only the real fanatics will pay for it again when it comes out on DVD. I wish the studios would stop being so stupid and give DVD a chance to truly compete with VHS. Because one DVD has that chance, it'll blow VHS out of the water!

    DVD news

    by maagic

Glen, I don't know where you get your DVD info, but Fox has not released any official word on "The X-Files: Fight The Future" on DVD. There was a rumour posted to The Digital Bits that it MAY be released in February, but that is just rumour.

    Pre-Special Edition DVD

    by gonzo

Does anyone know if there's any chance that the Star Wars DVD will feature the original cut, rather than the mangled "special edition"? Or perhaps they could throw both versions on there and please everyone...

Star Wars DVDs & Disney's "suckitude"

    by chriscub

Sad to say, but the Star Wars films that will be translated into DVD will be ONLY the Special Editions. Lucas considers these versions to be the cleaned-up, quintessential, "perfect" versions of the trilogy. And boy, do I feel your pain. The Jabba scene added to "ST:ANH," Luke's dubbed scream from "ESB," and the entire Jedi Rocks sequence from "ROJ" were totally unnecessary and ultimately detract from my personal memories of these otherwise fine films. Switching to Disney. The only watchable and decent films to come out of Disney during their recent decade-long renaissance of animated films have been "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Everything else has been pure slag. Especially, ESPECIALLY "The Lion King" a/k/a "the Farting Pig Movie." Terrible lyrics, terrible animation, terrible holes in the plot (oh boy, one blend-cut and suddenly we're full grown adult animals . . . what story development, what progress!). Someone also needs to start pressuring Disney to stop catering to the PC whims of the Mom's and Dad's of today's toddlers. No more altering Disney animation films for home release. No more halving the screen to show a pop music video version of the film's main score. No more digital erasing of perceived "objectionable behaviors" of Disney characters (ie. removing Peco Bill's smoking cigars). No more alteration of song lyrics to appease some minority special interest group. I say, if Disney originally decided that the film was fit for attendees of the initial run theater screenings, then it ought to be fit for home screenings on videotape as well.

    Bambi

    by buff

If and when Disney releases Bambi on DVD, methinks it would be wise to include Bambi VS. Godzilla as a special feature.
    A guy can dream, right?

    Lion King Bashing

    by plissken

What's with you people? Lion King was the last good movie Disney made. The characters were good, the story was good, the songs were good, and the animation was SUPERB! I have also seen Lion King 2 and it is by far the best work Disney has done in their direct to video department. Everything after LK has either sucked (Pocahontas, Hunchback) or has just not been as good (Hercules, Mulan) But I understand LK is not for everyone. Tastes are different. After all even Pocahontas has its fans. I think. However, the one thing I will never agree on is that Lk's animation sucks. It is amazing and Lk 2's is also amazing considering it was made for video. Anyway, Couch Potato is right. Tarzan is going to rock. As is prince of Egypt.

    "Star Wars" on DVD

    by grundle

George Lucas made and owns "Star Wars." It is his right to do or not do with it whatever he wants.

He has said that the original versions of Episodes IV, V, and VI will never be released on DVD, only the special editions. Well if that's what he wants, it's certainly his right. I'm not questioning that.

But George, if you're reading this, I want you to know that I prefer the original versions. On the original "Star Wars," you invented all of the special effects. But when I saw the Special Edition last year, I thought, "Oh no! Now it looks like 'Jurassic Park'" Now, I'm not criticizing JP, but I just so much love the original versions of the SW movies.

George, how about this? How about issuing a special boxed set of DVDs that contains the original versions AND the new versions of episodes IV, V, and VI?

Right now, the best technology that exists for preserving movies is to have them on DVD. If World War III were to happen, and 99.999% of everything was destroyed, as long as there was at least one DVD copy of a movie, then that movie can still continue in existence.

Eventually, all the VHS copies of the original SW movies will deteriorate. But if they were on DVD, then they would last forever.

    DVD's...copyguarded, right?

    by eric

From what I understand, you can't make VHS copies of DVD's because they are copy protected. Is this correct?
